Ep. 5: Gold & Blue Breakdown | WVU vs. Penn State Preview

Couz’s Corner

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 30, 2024 39:32

In this WVU football podcast, Couz and Jonathan Martin will preview the upcoming week 1 college football game between the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Penn State Nittany Lions. They will look at three keys to the game for the Mountaineers, two position battles to watch, one key player to watch and then will give their score predictions at the end. Penn State travels to Morgantown, West Virginia on August 31 to take on WVU. Both teams are opening up the 2024 college football season with this game. The Nittany Lions are eight point favorites upon the recording of the show and are ranked in the top 10 in nearly every preseason poll. Most pundits also have them making the College Football Playoff at the end of the season. The Nittany Lions are led by quarterback Drew Allar and a very talented running back tandem of Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton. The two backs combined to eclipse the 1,600 yard mark in 2023. They do have question marks at the wide receiver position and replace three starting offensive linemen. There are fewer question marks on the PSU defense. They have NFL talent everywhere, led by defensive end/linebacker Abdul Carter. His speed makes him a matchup nightmare coming off the edge or up the middle. They also have star safety KJ Winston who led the team with 61 tackles last season, and defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton. The speedy quarterback Garrett Greene will lead the Mountaineer offense into the game. He is also flanked by a talented pair of running backs in C.J. Donaldson and Jahiem White. The trio ran for over 2,000 yards in 2023. Greene also threw for over 2,000 yards with only four interceptions. The Mountaineer defense is led by safety Aubrey Burks and defensive end Sean Martin. The two seniors will look to improve this WVU defense that had its share of struggles last season. WVU will rely on several transfers in the secondary, including Garnett Hollis who came over from Northwestern via the transfer portal. Will the Mountaineer fans will their team to victory, or will the talent of Penn State be too much for West Virginia to overcome? Jonathan and Couz answer those questions in the episode. #wvufootball #wvu #pennstatefootball

Blue White Illustrated sent a host of reports to the 2023 Rose Bowl to give you coverage from every angle of the game. Today on the BWI Daily Edition, reporter Nate Bauer, will join the show live to discuss his impressions of Penn State's historic win. If you'd like to ask questions or get your opinion on the show, join live at 8 pm on YouTube! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK Bauer was there in Los Angeles in the days leading up to the Rose Bowl and got a chance to speak with several Penn State football players at the open media day. Most notably, the freshmen, whom Penn State does not allow to speak with the media their first year, were available for interviews. Bauer spoke with Nittany Lion's breakout star running back, Nicholas Singleton. He'll give his impressions of Singleton and the other players he spoke with on the show Thursday night.  They'll also discuss the most interesting players he spoke with, regardless of grade on the show. To help give context and narrative to the story, he'll share his conversations with KeAndre Lambert-Smith and PJ Mustipher.  Finally, as the Blue White Illustrated team's big-picture expert, Bauer and T-Frank will discuss the legacy impact of winning the Rose Bowl. Penn State head coach James Franklin became the first head coach since Joe Paterno in 1994 to win the Rose Bowl while wearing Blue and White. Does this win to secure his legacy as a head coach at the university? After nine seasons, is it time to have that conversation?  Obviously, that story is only complete with discussing quarterback Sean Clifford. So, what does this win and this season do for his place in Penn State lore? They'll discuss this topic and then look to the future of the program and the highly anticipated 2023 football season. It is Australia’s first time in the knockout stage since 2006. That was the only other time they advanced out of the group stage. Leckie took a pass just around the center circle and moved in and around a defender. He eventually hit a left-footed shot that beat Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. Australia finished with 6 points in Group D. Tunisia 1, France 0 – France loses to Tunisia 1-0 but still wins World Cup group Defending champion France won its World Cup group despite losing to Tunisia 1-0. Wahbi Khazri scored in the 58th minute to give the Tunisians the victory but it wasn’t enough to get them into the round of 16. Australia beat Denmark 1-0 in other Group D game and finished second on goal difference. Khazri ran at the heart of the French defense and beat two players before poking the ball into the bottom corner. It was Tunisia’s third victory at a World Cup. France forward Antoine Griezmann thought he had evened the score in the eighth minute of stoppage time but he was ruled offside following a video review. Argentina 2, Poland 0 – Messi and Argentina advance at World Cup, beat Poland 2-0 Lionel Messi will grace the World Cup stage at least one more time. The Argentina great had a penalty saved but his team still beat Poland 2-0 after second-half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez and advanced to the last 16. Argentina finished in first place in Group C to set up a match against surprise qualifier Australia. Poland also advanced despite the loss. Argentina has bounced back from opening the World Cup with a shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia. Messi’s likely final World Cup rolls onto Saturday. He will be relieved after failing to score a penalty for the second straight World Cup. Mexico 2, Saudi Arabia 1 – Mexico beats Saudi Arabia 2-1 but falls short at World Cup Henry Martin and Luis Chaves scored a goal each in Mexico’s furious attempt to stay alive at the World Cup but the 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia was not enough. Argentina beat Poland 2-0 in a simultaneous match so Mexico was eliminated from the group stage for the first time since 1978. Mexico had reached the round of 16 at the last seven World Cups. That was tied with Brazil for the longest current streak. El Tri went into the match at Lusail Stadium needing a victory and help from Poland to advance in Group C. Argentina’s victory meant goal difference came into play and Mexico missed out. That’s thanks to a new deal to split World Cup earnings. A 1-0 win by the men over Iran on Tuesday night increased their World Cup prize money to approximately $380,000 for each player in the squad. The same applies to players on the U.S. roster for the 2023 Women’s World Cup because of the new collective bargaining agreements between the U.S. Soccer Federation and the men’s and women’s unions. FIFA – Pulisic listed as day-to-day with pelvic injury at World Cup U.S. forward Christian Pulisic is day to day after sustaining a pelvic injury during his team’s 1-0 World Cup win against Iran that sent the Americans to the round of 16 of the tournament. Pulisic scored the 38th-minute winning goal against Iran, but crashed into Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand during the same play. The Chelsea striker was substituted at the start of the second half and taken to a hospital for tests. U.S. Soccer later posted a video showing Pulisic celebrating with his teammates at the team’s hotel.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Week 11 of the college football season, and we have a problem. We're well **TOUCHDOWN** into November and #MACtion is in full swing — meaning that there are potentially important games being played **WOOOOO** as we tape on Tuesday nights.   How important? How's about the annual rivalry game between Crappy's OU **THAT'S NOT HOLDING** Bobcats and the cake-eaters at Miami — it's THAT important. So this week, Crappy does his best to maintain focus **FIRST DOWN** on the show while watching the game — with modest success.   Last weekend was remarkable, from the weather in the Midwest (Jeez, Chicago…) to the **IT WAS A CATCH** upsets in South Bend and Baton Rouge that likely eliminated two of the sport's biggest brands from the CFP. Those **TOUCHDOWN** upsets were reflected in the new CFP rankings, which were much more to the liking of Carla and Crappy than the initial effort.   Cornell acquitted itself well in a loss to Penn, AJ comes close to using the words “Tulane” and “game of the week” in the **TERRIBLE CALL** same sentence … and then Carla and Crappy set out to pick this week's contests.   Missouri at No. 5 Tennessee, Noon Saturday, CBS Mizzou is better than their record would indicate, but the Tigers picked a rough weekend to visit Knoxville. Purdue at No. 21 Illinois, Noon, ESPN2 A great offense against a great defense? That can honestly go either way. A pretty good offense against the nation's No. 1 defense in scoring and yards allowed? Oof. No. 9 Alabama at No. 11 Ole Miss, 3:30, CBS The potential for Saban-Kiffin drama is far more interesting than anything that might happen football-wise.   Maryland at No. 14 Penn State, 3:30, Fox Good offenses can't score if they don't have the ball. Maryland? Meet Penn State tailbacks Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. You'll be seeing a lot of them on Saturday. No. 25 Washington at No. 6 Oregon, 7, Fox Two of the best QBs in the country. An AJ Fun Index of 72.5. Guys. Just watch this one.   No. 4 TCU at No. 18 Texas, 7:30, ABC Longhorn Kryptonite: Playing teams ranked in the Top 5. Oh, hey, look — TCU is ranked 4th.   No. 15 North Carolina at Wake Forest, 7:30, ESPN 2 Wake was still reeling last weekend, and beating Carolina isn't going to be any easier. It should be, however, interesting to watch — with an AJ Fun Index of SEVENTY-SEVEN AND ONE HALF POINTS.   We wrap with Carla updating us on Middle, Crappy congratulating Kansas on bowl eligibility and the conclusion of the aforementioned Battle of the Bricks. If you want to hear Crappy's reaction, you'll have to listen until the end. Enjoy this week's games, boys and girls, and we'll see you back here next week.

Brian and Seth will take the stage, there will be pizza and drinks. Asking those attending to kick in $10 on top of their ticket to cover the pizza and renting the place. 1. Offense vs UConn starts at 1:00 Name a random Michigan walk-on QB in the comments! Eight quarterbacks participated in this game, seven of them completed a pass. Lots of Speed in Space in this game because UConn allowed it to happen, the coaches adjusted to the opposing defense which is encouraging. Receivers might need to get used to scramble drills with JJ. Offensive play calling is by committee again. Oluwatimi looks great at center, the rest of the offensive line has stuff to work on. Isaiah Gash may actually be the short yardage back? Otherwise it's Corum. Ronnie Bell knocked the rust off, only target he didn't catch was almost the coolest catch ever.  [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]   2. Defense vs UConn starts at 36:05 Not sure how much to take away from this game. UConn completed four passes, Michigan had seven players complete passes (we haven't decided what this rutger is called). Mike Sainristil looks like he was recruited to play defense. Continued production from Rayshaun Benny and Mason Graham is encouraging because no matter who you're playing, you're still pushing back a 300 lbs guy. Lots of rotation along the line, probably less of that as the season goes on. Braiden McGregor started and got a lot of play time into the second half. Default defensive passing down package looks to be a dime package. Defense as a whole is progressing better than we thought they would. No standout star but everyone is doing their job.  3. Hot Takes, Special Teams, and Game Theory starts at 1:03:09 Takes hotter than RGIII after he hears something vaguely sexual. Michigan has ten quarterbacks that could start at Rutgers. Punt return touchdown will probably happen again, Jay Harbaugh continues to be amazing at everything he touches. Jake Moody's field goal attempt would've been good from 55 but hey, that was fun. There is... not much game theory to actually discuss.  4. Around the Big Ten With Jamie Mac starts at 1:26:46 SMU had 85 more yards than Maryland but lost on fumbles, interceptions, and missed field goals. We thought Maryland was a team with a good offense and meh defense and that opinion has not changed. Penn State looked impressive against Auburn without much Sean Clifford action. Nicholas Singleton could be a problem. Shout out to Sean Clifford for lasting this long without being completely Hackenberg'd. Could Michigan actually end up not beating a ranked team and get bumped out of the playoffs as a result since everyone but Ohio State is bad. Michigan State gets two goal line stands and still loses by nine. Pretty alarming that they gave up nearly 400 passing yards. Kenneth Walker might've been more important than even we thought. Northwestern is probably the 3rd or 4th best team in the state of Illinois. Purdue outgained Syracuse by nearly 200 yards and gets beaten by a dime at the buzzer - how did they lose this? Indiana is 3-0 but can they get to a bowl? It took Iowa seven hours to score 27 points.  MUSIC: "Skinny Dipping"--LA Exes "Selfish"--Slum Village "Play Me"--Neil Diamond “Across 110th Street”
