Wood Mackenzie's 18th Solar and Energy Storage summit is back, in Denver this week. If you can't make it, don't worry – we have all the debate and key insight you need to know here on the podcast.Recorded live on day 1 of the summit, host Sylvia Leyva Martinez talks to four industry leaders in solar and storage to answer these questions:Can the U.S. solar industry keep up with demand amid trade wars and policy chaos? Discussing this is David Carroll, ENGIE's Chief Renewables Officer. He warns that policy uncertainty and tariff whiplash are stalling U.S. solar investment. Sylvia and David look at sodium-ion batteries; are they a safer option? Plus, more domestic energy storage is needed amid growing calls for stable tax credit policy to meet growing electricity demand. A must-hear for developers navigating today's volatile energy landscape. What about VPPS? Can they scale fast enough to provide a real alternative? Answering this is Sarah Noll, She shares insights on regulatory challenges, customer trust, and tech adoption, showing how the Arizona Public Service is turning grid flexibility into a real growth strategy. Are storage operators leaving millions on the table because they don't understand their own batteries? That's the big question Shyam Srinivasan, CEO of Zitara, answers with Sylvia. He reveals how poor software integration is holding back storage performance. As storage scales rapidly, Shyam stresses the need for better diagnostics and real-time decision tools to optimise revenue, reliability, and resilience - especially in merchant markets. Finally, Samantha Frisk from Pivot energy sits down with Sylvia to look at models for community solar development. Sam explains how early engagement, local benefits like agrivoltaics, and trusted partnerships can turn sceptical communities into solar advocates - proving clean energy can uplift as well as decarbonise.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this second special episode of Wood Mackenzie's The Energy Gang, recorded at the Reuters Global Energy Transition 2024 conference in New York, we speak with leaders at some of the key companies shaping the energy transition. We hear about how they are tackling the challenge of meeting rising demand for electricity while at the same time reducing emissions.Greg Jackson, CEO of Octopus Energy, talks about his ambitions in the US market, which are centered around selling the company's Kraken technology platform to utilities. He highlights the global potential of digitalization in propelling the energy transition forward. The transition towards renewable energy is governed not only by technological progress, but also by regulatory and policy frameworks. Our second guest, David Carroll, Chief Renewables Officer at Engie, talks about how legislation including the Inflation Reduction Act, and regulatory initiatives such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) Order No. 1920, can catalyze the adoption of renewable energy sources.Next we talk to Ana Quelhas, Managing Director of the Hydrogen Business Unit at EDP Renewables, about the role of hydrogen in the shift away from carbon-intensive energy. Some of the hype around low-carbon hydrogen has been dying away over the past year or two. But Ana Quelhas argues that, if done right, hydrogen can still be an important part of a zero-carbon energy system, for uses where direct electrification may not be feasible. And finally, Bill Newsom, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Americas, tells us about what the energy revolution means for equipment suppliers. His company is developing and deploying solutions that address the demand for “clean firm” power that is available round-the-clock, through hydrogen and carbon capture. He talks about the prospect that these technologies could help provide the massive increase in 24/7 low-carbon electricity that will be required for new data centers and factories, and to charge electric vehicles.Look out for the next special episode from day three of the conference, available on Friday June 28.You can find Ed and the show on most social media platforms: we're @theenergygang on X. Click below for full episode transcript: Jaz's Introduction: So you might have come across the BioClear matrices. They've been kind of taken dentistry by storm over the last few years. I was first exposed to them maybe about, gosh, nine, ten years ago. And this mad scientist type figure came on the scene, Dr. David Clark. And I just loved his quirkiness, his humour and just the way his brain worked. Jaz's Introduction:Now, fast forward some years, I used their anterior matrices for black triangle closure. I had some good success. And as an associate, I never got to purchase the posterior matrices, although I did do a hands on workshop and I was quite impressed. But today, this episode is not about any matrix system. It's not a sponsored episode. It is just to shine a light on some really important principles that we can learn from the bioclear philosophy. We're just about still in adhesive month, it's February, so we're focusing on adhesive dentistry and maybe part two will fall into early March. Now in this part one we focus on posterior. What are the principles of cavity preparation and the BioClear approach? I mean how do they do it with just one big increment, very different to the small increments that we're used to using. In fact they're very similar themes to the last episode we discussed with Dr. Ahmed Tadfi on the fast modeling composite technique. And so there are a few crossovers. So we're really spoiling you this month with these really cool episodes about posterior bread and butter at adhesive dentistry, and it was great to host a Protruserati Dr. David Carroll and his colleague, Diana McKenna. Look, David has been a Protruserati for over a year.

TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of August 21 and August 28, 2023. MUSIC – ~15 sec – instrumental. That's part of “The Foggy Dew,” an Irish song performed here by Timothy Seaman of Williamsburg, Virginia, with Ann Robinson on Celtic Harp. In the song's traditional lyrics, fog and dew set the scene for the Easter Uprising in 1916, during the Irish Revolution for independence from Great Britain. This Water Radio episode's focus isn't on those important historical events, but rather on a number related to fog and dew, and to whether the weather on a summer day feels comfortable or close. That number is the dew point temperature, or simply the dew point. The National Weather Service gives the following descriptions of “general comfort levels” at various dew points:“less than or equal to 55 degrees Fahrenheit: dry and comfortable;“between 55 and 65: becoming ‘sticky' with muggy evenings;“[at 65 or more]: ...becoming oppressive.” Note, however, that perceived comfort levels at different dew points depend on the climate conditons to which a person is acclimated. Let's explore some of the science of the dew point. Any parcel of air can hold a given amount of water vapor, depending on the air parcel's temperature; air with higher temperature can hold more water vapor. The term relative humidity refers to how much water vapor an air parcel actually holds, compared to its potential maximum. The dew point, then, is the temperature at which an air parcel reaches a relative humidity of 100 percent. Cooling air below its dew point results in water vapor condensing into fog, dew, or some other kind of precipitation; if temperatures are below freezing, the dew point is then considered the frost point. Now, here's the key concept for how humid the air feels: a higher dew point indicates that an air parcel is holding more moisture at any given temperature or relative humidity. With more moisture in the air, the human body has more trouble evaporating sweat, the process that removes heat and cools the body. With sweat not evaporating as readily, it feels hotter and more humid; the term “heat index” refers to how hot people feel in combinations of temperature and humidity. Humidity, sweat and evaporation, comfort or mugginess: there's a lot to learn from the daily dew point. IMAGES The following two photos of dew and were taken by Virginia Water Radio in Blacksburg, Va., on August 12, 2023, around 8 a.m. EDT, when the dew point and the actual temperature were the same. EXTRA INFORMATION ABOUT DEW POINT AND HEAT INDEX The following information is quoted from the National Weather Service, accessed at the Web sites noted on August 21, 2023. Dew Point Information From “Dew Point vs. Humidity,” online at https://www.weather.gov/arx/why_dewpoint_vs_humidity. “The dew point is the temperature the air needs to be cooled to (at constant pressure) in order to achieve a relative humidity (RH) of 100%. At this point the air cannot hold more water in the gas form. If the air were to be cooled even more, water vapor would have to come out of the atmosphere in the liquid form, usually as fog or precipitation. “The higher the dew point rises, the greater the amount of moisture in the air. This directly affects how ‘comfortable' it will feel outside. Many times, relative humidity can be misleading. For example, a temperature of 30 and a dew point of 30 will give you a relative humidity of 100%, but a temperature of 80 and a dew point of 60 produces a relative humidity of 50%. It would feel much more ‘humid' on the 80 degree day with 50% relative humidity than on the 30 degree day with a 100% relative humidity. This is because of the higher dew point. “So if you want a real judge of just how ‘dry' or ‘humid' it will feel outside, look at the dew point instead of the [relative humidity]. The higher the dew point, the muggier it will feel.” “General comfort levels using dew point that can be expected during the summer months:*less than or equal to 55: dry and comfortable;*between 55 and 65: becoming ‘sticky' with muggy evenings;*greater than or equal to 65: lots of moisture in the air, becoming oppressive.” Heat Index Information From “What is the heat index?” online at https://www.weather.gov/ama/heatindex. “

And there are things that cost money. And the most important number you need to know is 14 for it's how many minutes you have in the day, as a human, you got to eat, you got to sleep, you got to shit and you got to spend some time with people you care about. Outside of those four things you get to allocate where you're spending those minutes. And the the lower you are in business, the more of those minutes you're gonna have What's your most valuable currency, it's not your dollars in your pocket, it's your time where you allocate those minutes in the beginning of your business, you're gonna find you're trying to earn your minutes back and you can do that with money." - David "He said one thing to me, one out of the two things, the first one that stuck with me, he's like, you know, back in 2016, when people were talking about growing their business and all these online courses and live events, he goes, Yeah, I went to all that shit. And I'm not saying anything about anybody else. But while everybody else just kept learning more about it, I actually went out and did the shit. I actually just did it. He's like, it's not rocket science. And then another thing he said to me, which was powerful asides from, you know, him just taking the action and taking the risk was, he said, you know, Keith, what I've done, because you've built two multimillion dollar businesses, you said, 1000s and 1000s of people have done this before me. It's not like I'm the first person to invent the wheel, bro. Like, people have figured this shit out." - Keith Connect with David Website: https://www.dopemarketing.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DopeMktg/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dopemktg/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwhQCqt3WGZN-skFCnvE2RA Connect with Keith Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/keithkalfas/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thelandscapingemployeetrap Website: https://www.keithkalfas.com/resources Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@keith-kalfas Resouces and Websites:
This is Part 1 of two episodes looking back on the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which arguably kicked off five years ago when the New York Times and the Guardian published articles on March 17, 2018. The Times headline was “How Trump Consultants Exploited the Data of Millions,” while the Guardian went with “Revealed: 50 million Facebook profiles harvested for Cambridge Analytica in major data breach.”That number, and the scale of the scandal, would only grow in the weeks and months ahead. It served as a major catalyzing moment for privacy concerns in the social media age. In these two episodes we'll look back on what has happened since, the extent to which perceptions of what happened have changed or been challenged, and what unresolved questions that emerged from the scandal mean for the future. In this first episode, Justin Hendrix speaks with David Carroll, a professor of media design in the MFA Design and Technology graduate program at the School of Art, Media and Technology at Parsons School of Design at The New School. Carroll legally challenged Cambridge Analytica in the UK courts to recapture his 2016 voter profile using European data protection law, events that were chronicled in the 2019 Netflix documentary The Great Hack.

Why are some state's public defense systems so strong while others are so weak? This week, Hunter speaks for a second time with David Carroll, the Executive Director of the Sixth Amendment Center. David highlights a handful of reports that his organization conducted in an attempt to improve the public defense systems of many different states. First, David talks about Oakland Michigan, a now strong system because of the Sixth Amendment Center's findings. Then, he'll go into a weaker system—New Hampshire. Taking you through the ins and outs of this complicated government, you'll learn exactly why change in this state has been so difficult. Hunter and David end the episode by delving into the Illinois and Lake County, California reports and how the Sixth Amendment has improved the systems in these locations as well. This episode highlights the fact that systems can still be bad even with well-intentioned individuals at the helm. However, David will instill you with true hope that positive change is on the horizon. Key Topics/Takeaways: Qualifications and independence for attorneys in Oakland. [15:53] Attorney compensation in Oakland. [21:45] Recommendations and results in Oakland. [33:20] The structure of indigent defense in New Hampshire. [41:33] Attorney compensation in New Hampshire. [54:04] Non-lawyer prosecuters. [59:19] The nonprofit state public defender and conflict system. [1:07:20] Caseloads in New Hampshire. [1:10:17] Recommendations for New Hampshire. [1:17:23] The Illinois report. [1:24:28] The Lake County, California report. [1:32:21] A 2022 public defense wrap up + David's hope for the future. [1:38:47] Guest: David Caroll, Executive Director, Sixth Amendment Center Resources: Sixth Amendment Center Reports Race to the Bottom Michigan Memorable Quotes: “Systems in America, whether that be indigent defense or otherwise, do not need to have a bad person running them for them to fail. In fact, it can be even more difficult for well-intentioned people to correct a system that they are responsible for because it is so much harder for them to see past their own good intentions.” (2:40, Hunter) “People don't even see it anymore. It's ethical blindness right in front of them. And so it takes a group like ours to come in and hold a mirror up and say, no, look at what's actually playing out in all these things.” (24:43, David) “Now that we've solved the compensation issue, once those plans get implemented and in place, once caseloads can be enforced, I think Michigan's well on the way to being one of the better systems in the country.” (39:28, David) “I think a lot of people that want criminal justice reform think that criminal justice systems were rationally constructed. Like someone sat down and said, this is the best way to do it for us. And it's absolutely not the case. It's just piecemeal.” (1:08:22, David) “I am hopeful. I am the eternal optimist. You can't be doing this work for over 25 years and not be hopeful.” (1:39:10, David) Contact Hunter Parnell: hwparnell@publicdefenseless.com Instagram www.publicdefenseless.com

This week our guest is David Carroll, a professor of media design at the New School in New York City who gained worldwide renown when he decided to engage in a legal battle with the Cambridge Analytica. For those who may not know, Cambridge Analytica was involved in a massive data scandal using Facebook data to manipulate voters into voting for Donald Trump and Brexit. In this conversation, we explore David's battle against Cambridge Analytica from start to finish, attempting to go beyond the details captured in the documentary that was made about his fight, The Great Hack. We additionally discuss the current and future dynamics of data privacy and protection, including the often overlooked risks and the potential legislation that could drastically change humanity's relationship with data. In this episode, Prof. David Carroll discusses his accidental fame after as a focus in the Netflix documentary The Great Hack, which followed Carroll's lawsuit against Cambridge Analytica — before its fall — to retrieve his data from the data broker. As we know now, the lawsuit revealed more than Carroll's data and would lead to years of Facebook litigation, lawsuits and settlements.
We finish our conversation on George Eliot's 1871-1872 behemoth Middlemarch with an in-depth discussion of the book as an historical novel and the historical contexts of its setting in the early 1830s. We all have different answers to how much we liked-liked reading this massive thing (Tristan is a big fan, Megan and Katie… less so), but we all loved Dorothea, and we did all legitimately love talking about this novel. AND we all agree that the scene where Mr Brooke gets rotten eggs thrown at him because he had one-too-many glasses of sherry before a campaign speech and went Chuck-Grassley-on-Twitter incoherent is among the finest scenes in 19th-century British literature. All landlords are bastards, folks. To finish, we play a delightful game where we debate which Middlemarch character you want running your mutual fund. We read the Oxford edition, edited by David Carroll with an introduction by Felicia Bonaparte. For an excellent reading of Middlemarch as critical toward mid-19th century liberal ideological assumptions, we highly recommend Elaine Hadley's Living Liberalism: Practical Citizenship in Mid-Victorian Britain, which we discuss on the show. *Note to listeners – we're taking a short mid-season break, but we'll be back with new episodes in a couple weeks. For our 100th episode (!!!), it's only fitting we tackle a Big One. And George Eliot's Middlemarch (1871-1872) is certainly that – literally (it's SO MANY PAGES). Middlemarch tells the stories of several intersecting characters all trying in various ways to find meaning amid the alienation of industrial modernity, and we discuss epistemology, philosophy, gender, class and bourgeoisification, marriage, capital-H History, politics. This kind of is a novel about everything. Also, failsons abound! It wouldn't be Better Read than Dead without failsons. Don't forget to join us next week for Part Two! We read the Oxford edition, edited by David Carroll with an introduction by Felicia Bonaparte. For more on Eliot's interest in nineteenth-century science and its bearing on Middlemarch's epistemological concerns, we highly recommend Gillian Beer's Darwin's Plots: Evolutionary Narrative in Darwin, George Eliot, and Nineteenth-Century Fiction, which we discuss on the show. And for another good discussion of Middlemarch and its contexts, check out this 2018 In Our Time episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/middlemarch/id73330895?i=1000409248380.
