This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for November 16, 2023.It will be our last day above 60 degrees for a while Thursday. According to the National Weather Service there will be increasing clouds in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 67 degrees. It will also be breezy, with winds of 15 to 20 mph gusting as high as 35 mph.We should still have highs in the 50s on Saturday and Sunday, but it appears that next week will begin the slide into colder temperatures.A judge Wednesday sentenced 18-year-old Jeremy Goodale to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years for his role in killing his high school Spanish teacher with a baseball bat.District Judge Shawn Showers said this wasn't a “typical” murder case — noting the brutal nature of the killing. 66-year-old Nohema Graber, a teacher at Fairfield High School, was killed in 2021 by Goodale and Willard Chaiden Miller. Both students were 16 at the time of the killing.Showers, who considered all the juvenile factors required in sentencing a teen, said there were mitigating factors in the case, including Goodale's genuine remorse, which was unlike “your co-defendant” – referring to Chaiden Miller. He also said Goodale's plea of guilty and acceptance of responsibility also was a mitigating factor.State education officials will not provide Iowa school districts with a list of library materials now prohibited under new K-12 book restriction rules, despite calls and suggestions for it to do so by school librarians and administrators and a state board member. The Iowa Board of Education voted Wednesday to move ahead with proposed rules seeking to clarify restrictions under a new state law that prohibits books and curriculum in K-12 schools that contain descriptions of sex acts. The law also prohibits the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity through sixth grade. The law passed solely by the Republican majority also requires school administrators to alert a student's caregiver if a student wants to use pronouns that differ from their sex assigned at birth.Iowa cornerback and special teams standout Cooper DeJean has suffered a significant lower-leg injury in practice and will miss the rest of the season, the team confirmed Wednesday evening in a news release.“This is truly heartbreaking for Cooper,” Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement. “He has played extremely well and is a real playmaker on our team. We will all support Cooper during his recovery, which will continue into the new year.”DeJean, an Associated Press midseason All-American, has widely been projected to be a first-round pick in next year's NFL Draft should he choose to forego his senior season.

Teen Willard Miller pleaded guilty to the murder of his Spanish teacher Nohema Graber and now a judge has sentenced him to life in prison. Iowa law does not permit juveniles to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, so Miller, 17, will serve a minimum of 35 years before he is eligible for parole. Willard Noble Chaiden Miller and Jeremy Everett Goodale were accused of killing 66-year-old Nohema Graber. The boys were students at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, where Graber had been teaching Spanish since 2012. Police found Graber's remains on November 3 at Chautauqua Park in Fairfield. A tipster led investigators to the teens. Police say social media evidence ties both suspects to Graber's death. According to a criminal complaint, in a social media exchange, the teens appeared to know specific details regarding Graber's death, including how the teacher died, and the motive. Information on a specific motive has not been publicly released. Investigators obtained search warrants for both suspects' homes and found clothing that appeared to have blood on them. A witness who knew the suspects told police the suspects were seen at the park on November 3. Prosecutors said Miller was upset about a grade and had been seen arguing with her about it. He contended that he acted as lookout for 18-year-old Jeremy Goodale as he struck and killed Nohema Graber with a baseball bat on November 2, 2021. The 66-year-old Graber was a Spanish teacher at Fairfield High School.Goodale testified Tuesday during his hearing that it had been Miller who had planned the assault, brough the bat, and struck Graber. Goodale testified he helped Miller move Graber off the park trail, where he struck her and she died. Assistant Iowa Attorney General Scott Brown said the prosecution contends Miller was part of planning the murder and he also struck Graber with the baseball bat. Brown said that Miller also helped cover up the crime and destroyed evidence.Brown said the prosecution believes the murder was committed due to Graber giving a bad grade, and it was Miller who was in her class that year, not Goodale. Brown said the prosecution will recommend a minimum of 30 years in prison for Miller, with the possibility of parole. He said they will be recommending 25 years for Goodale, because he cooperated with the investigation. Graber, who grew up in Mexico, had been a Spanish teacher at Fairfield High since 2012. She left behind three children — Christian, Nohema Marie and Jared — and a former husband, Paul. The Iowa City Police Department has begun scouring the Iowa River and Ralston Creek in search of a 20-year-old Muscatine man who was last seen early Saturday, according to authorities.Cristian Martinez was last seen walking west in the 100 block of W. Harrison Street, south of downtown, about 12:56 a.m. Saturday. His phone had died earlier in the evening and his loved ones have been unable to reach him.Based on the direction Martinez was walking, police are concerned he may have ended up at the Iowa River. The Iowa City Police Department worked with Johnson County Emergency Management and the Army Corps of Engineers to reduce the flow from the Coralville Reservoir to help search the river for Martinez.Boats and drones have been used to search the river. Police have also searched nearby railroad tracks and Ralston Creek, and have obtained surveillance video from Iowa City, the University of Iowa, Johnson County and other private video. They've also reviewed Martinez' bank account and cellphone activity, according to a news release

The boys were students at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, where Graber had been teaching Spanish since 2012. Now Jeremy Goodale has agreed to testify against Willard Miller. Goodale and Miller are each charged with first-degree murder in the November 2021 death of 66-year-old Nohema Graber. Police found Graber's remains November 3, at the Chautauqua Park in Fairfield. A tipster led investigators to the teens. Police say social media evidence ties both suspects to Graber's death. According to a criminal complaint, in a social media exchange, the teens appeared to know specific details regarding Graber's death, included how the teacher died, and the motive. Goodale and Miller are both charged with first-degree murder in the November 2021 death of 66-year-old Nohema Graber, their Spanish teacher at Fairfield High School. Her body was found in a Fairfield park in November 2021.
Nohema Graber was a Spanish teacher in Fairfield Iowa and was described by friends and family to be warm and loving. She wrote in her journal how she made it a point to smile at all of her students because smiling is contagious and she wanted to spread more joy and love in the world. Not only was she kind and loving, she also had big dreams for all of her students and would challenge them to strive for more and work hard. But when Willard Miller was given a bad grade by Nohema that led his gpa to drop, he took the grade personal. And over the next few months 16-year old Willard Miller and his friend 16-year old Jermey Goodall began to stalk Nohema and keep track of her every move, what car she drove, where she lived etc. In order to plot a seamless plan to murder their teacher over a bad grade.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, November 2.The great weather continues! According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 76 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area on Wednesday. On Wednesday night it will be partly cloudy, with a low of around 53 degrees. Two Iowa teenagers killed their high school Spanish teacher last year after being frustrated over a bad grade. Prosecutors made the claim Tuesday in court documents that for the first time reveal a possible motive for the murder.According to reporting from the Associated Press, the documents were filed ahead of a hearing Wednesday where a judge will hear arguments on whether to suppress any of the evidence against Willard Miller and Jeremy Goodale, who are charged with murdering high school Spanish teacher Nohema Graber in Fairfield on November 3, 2021.In a police interview, Miller described the frustrations he had with the way Graber taught Spanish and over how the grade in her class was lowering his GPA.“The poor grade is believed to be the motive behind the murder of Graber, which directly connects Miller,” court documents filed by Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding and Assistant Iowa Attorney General Scott Brown said.Miller initially denied any involvement in Graber's disappearance but “later stated he had knowledge of everything but did not participate,” according to court documents. He told police that the real killers — a “roving group of masked kids” — forced him to provide his wheelbarrow to help move her body and to drive her van from the park.Miller's defense attorneys are seeking to invalidate four search warrants and suppress evidence from Miller's home, comments he made to police and information taken from his cellphone, and the social media platform Snapchat. With more than a year of construction to go on a new 38,500-square-foot, two-level Hawkeye wrestling practice facility, the University of Iowa is moving to officially name it after a family that made the $7 million lead gift. The “Goschke Family Wrestling Training Center” will honor Doug and Ann Goschke — Iowa natives who split their time between Iowa and Florida.Officials said the facility — which originally was expected to cost $17.3 million before inflation and an expanded scope for the new women's wrestling team drove the price up to $31.6 million — will be funded entirely by gifts. The current Carver Circle campaign has raised nearly $27 million in gift commitments to date.Construction adjacent Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where the wrestling teams compete, began in summer 2022 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2024. Teamsters Local 238 signed a new three-year agreement with Archer Daniels Midland Tuesday, averting a strike at the multinational food processor's facility in Cedar Rapids. The union's previous contract with ADM, based in Chicago, had expired at midnight. The new agreement was effective immediately.Jesse Case, secretary-treasurer of local 238, said in a statement the new agreement includes an immediate 6 percent across-the-board raise for the first year, a $5,000 ratification bonus, 40 hours of sick leave, eight additional hours of personal leave and “additional premium pay for many classifications.”The ADM facility employs 450 workers with an additional 200 to 300 skilled-trade contractors also on site.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Friday, May 13th. I looked up the origin of Friday the 13th, and it turns out that bad luck combo is relatively recent, while 13 on its own has been considered unlucky for centuries. The more you know. Colder air will finally make its way back into the Cedar Rapids area on Friday, which could lead to some storms on Friday afternoon. According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly sunny during the day, with a high near 84 degrees. There is a chance for rain listed after noon, but this will reach its highest probability Friday night. Even then, the chance for precipitation is currently only 40 percent. And after a week of record breaking high temperatures, this weekend's weather is looking quite pleasant. Testimony ended Thursday in the trial of the Grundy Center man accused of shooting and killing Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith in 2021, https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/defense-wont-put-on-case-in-trooper-slaying/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-13 (with the defense not calling any of its own witnesses). The defense indicated it wasn't calling anyone to testify, and the accused, Michael Thomas Lang, 42, told the court he wasn't going to take the stand either. One of Lang's attorneys, Aaron Hawbaker, said Lang's decision to testify was related to his inability to argue the killing was in self defense. Judge Joel Dalrymple had previously ruled that the actions of law enforcement during the arrest were lawful, so arguing that Lang killed Smith in self defense was not a valid argument for the defense to pursue. Dalyrmple also gave the jury Thursday and Friday off to give more time for jury instructions to reduce the possibility of a mistrial. Smith, who grew up in Cedar Rapids, was the second Iowa State Patrol trooper to be shot and killed in the line of duty. He is survived by his wife and two children. The second of two teens accused of murdering a Fairfield High School Spanish teacher https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/judge-rules-2nd-fairfield-teen-to-be-tried-as-adult/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-13 (had his request to move his trial to juvenile court denied) on Thursday. The attorneys for 16-year-old Willard Noble Chaiden Miller had argued that he would benefit from the rehabilitation opportunities provided in the juvenile detention system, but the judge denied this request, like he did for Jeremy Everett Goodale, 17, the day before. https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/fairfield-police-2-students-murdered-spanish-teacher-from-their-high-school/ (Both teens are charged with first-degree murder )and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony in the killing of Nohema Graber. Her body was found in a park near the school Nov. 3. About 13 months after the NCAA approved a policy allowing collegiate athletes to transfer once without having to wait a year to play, Iowa athletics director Gary Barta is “pursuing” a repeal of the rule. “OK, if we can't totally control name, image and likeness, then let's go back and put a one-year — if you transfer, you can transfer, you don't have to lose your scholarship, but you must sit out a year,” Barta saidhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/46fryKBsl3BmgAr5hbSnwm?si=bdc7cf03874d4b7e ( on the athletics department's Fight for Iowa podcast.) The increasing volume of NIL deals — and the efforts by boosters to lure recruits or transfers to their schools via NIL — has prompted the concerns that there may be bidding wars over coveted players. Barta argued that making players sit out a year after transferring would give some institutional control back to athletic departments. Barta has plenty of influence among his peers in collegiate athletics, having recently served on the College
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, May 12. It has felt like thunderstorm friendly weather for a few days now and late Thursday into Friday might be when they finally show up. But this will only be after we experience another sunny, hot, and humid day. The high for the Cedar Rapids area is predicted to be a balmy 91 degrees during the day with partly sunny skies. Storms could develop Thursday into Friday as cold air fights its way back into the mix. Friday will see an increased chance for storms, possibly severe ones. A judge Wednesday rejected a request from the teen accused of murdering a high school teacher to have https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/judge-denies-sending-murder-case-to-juvenile-court-for-a-fairfield-teen/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-11 (his case transferred from adult court, where he faces harsher penalties if convicted). The number of new COVID-19 cases in Iowa has nearly tripled in the past four weeks, and Linn and Johnson counties are once more considered to be “high transmission” counties by federal health authorities. https://www.thegazette.com/health-care-medicine/iowa-covid-19-case-counts-triple-over-three-week-period/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-11 (The state on Wednesday reported 3,172 new coronavirus cases in the past seven days), compared to the 1,063 new cases reported in a seven-day period a month ago. The upturn is because of the highly contagious omicron subvariant, BA.2, which has become the dominant coronavirus strain in the Midwest and the rest of the country. A severe shortage in baby formula has https://www.thegazette.com/government-politics/iowa-congressional-members-candidate-call-for-action-on-baby-formula-shortage/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=heres_your_daily_briefing_from_the_gazette&utm_term=2022-05-11 (drawn the attention of members of Iowa's congressional delegation) and has become a campaign issue as well. Spot shortages in many groceries and pharmacies have been worsened by a FDA recall that stopped production at Abbot's largest U.S. formula manufacturing plant in Michigan. As supply disruptions and the massive safety recall have continued, several big box retailers have begun rationing sales of the formula. After hearing about the scarcity at his county meetings, Grassley https://www.grassley.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/grassley_to_fda_-_baby_formula_shortage.pdf (wrote) the FDA to ask what it is doing to address the shortage. He cited reports that at least 40 percent of baby formula supplies in the U.S. are completely depleted. Iowa was among six mostly...

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Friday, April 29. It will be warmer Friday but the chance for rain will remain. According to the National Weather Service there will be a chance for showers, with thunderstorms possible, after 10 a.m. in the Cedar Rapids area. The listed high is 65 degrees with mostly cloudy skies. Rain becomes even more likely Friday night, jumping from 40 percent to 90 percent probability, with new rainfall amounts between a quarter and a half an inch possible. The low should be close to the high temperatures earlier in the week, settling in at 56 degrees. Several petitions are circulating through the Iowa State University community opposing changes to its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences — specifically its history department — after administrators earlier this year announced $15 million in cuts by the 2026 budget year. The petition references Iowa State's recent decision to exit the prestigious Association of American Universities after 64 years, which the school did after criticizing the AAU ranking system — noting it favors “institutions with medical schools and associated medical research funding.” Also circulating are two separate petitions opposing proposals to eliminate the ISU Department of History's graduate programs. All of this comes as the university https://www.thegazette.com/article/iowa-iowa-state-liberal-arts-colleges-face-budget-woes-cuts/ (in February announced )a need to “right-size its budget in response to changing enrollment and student demand, as well as position the college for future success.” An Iowa City clinical psychologist Thursday said one of the Fairfield teens charged with killing a Spanish teacher with a baseball bat would benefit from juvenile court treatment and rehabilitation services — if moved out of adult court — but admitted there is no specific programming for homicide defendants. Psychologist Brenda Payne, who testified for the defense during a hearing to determine if the murder case against https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/fairfield-teens-charged-with-murder-argue-confidential-documents-shouldnt-be-made-public/ (Jeremy Goodale, 17,) should be transferred to juvenile court, said she conducted several tests to help form her opinion. She tested the teen's intellectual, executive, emotional and personality functioning. He is “bright,” has “above average” problem solving skills and no mental health issues. Goodale is the first of two teens seeking to have their cases transferred from adult court to juvenile court, where they could face lesser charges and penalties if convicted. Goodale and Willard Noble Chaiden Miller, 16, are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony in the killing of Nohema Graber, 66, the Spanish teacher at Fairfield High School. Her body was found in a park near the school in November. A 73-year-old man died Wednesday morning after a farming accident in rural Linn County, according to authorities. According to the Linn County Sheriff's Office, Stephen Jay Martin, of Springville, had been operating a field processor near the intersection of Bowdish Road and Whittier Road north of Springville when he stopped to make some adjustments to the equipment. Martin appeared to have slipped and fallen, causing an injury which resulted in his death. Martin's family discovered the incident and called law enforcement. Linn County deputies, sheriff's rescue, Central City Fire and Center Point Ambulance responded about 7:45 p.m. Next stop Baltimore for Tyler Linderbaum. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, March 22. It looks like it is going to rain for much of Tuesday, with a chance for some thunderstorms early and late. According to a forecast from the National Weather Service, there will be a 90 percent chance of rain in the Cedar Rapids area Tuesday with the possibility of a thunderstorm. The high should be around 57 degrees, with a wind of 10 to 15 mph gusting as high as 30 mph. On Tuesday night there will again be a 90 percent chance of rain with a chance of a thunderstorm, with a low around 44 degrees. It will be a little less windy Tuesday night, with the wind dropping to 5 to 10 mph. Lawyers for two Fairfield teens charged with killing a high school Spanish teacher argued Monday that a hearing Thursday regarding whether their cases should be moved to juvenile court could include confidential materials — medical or other reports – that could prejudice jurors against the teens. Lawyers for https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/fairfield-police-2-students-murdered-spanish-teacher-from-their-high-school/ (Jeremy Everett Goodale and Willard Noble Chaiden Miller, )both 16, argued during an in-person hearing that also was by video, that Thursday's https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/judge-resets-hearing-for-fairfield-teens-charged-with-slaying-teacher/ (reverse waiver hearing )could include information from a juvenile court officer, law enforcement investigation, psychological evaluations and search warrant applications, which each have portions that otherwise would be confidential. Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding argued both teens are accused as adults and the murder charges filed against them are in district — adult — court and should remain open. If the court grants transferring the cases to juvenile court, further proceedings would be closed. A motive for the killing has not been released. But according to court documents, the teens schemed over social media to kill Nohema Graber, who had taught at Fairfield High since 2012. They monitored her routine before ambushing her on her daily walk in the park, killing her and later hiding her body, according to court documents. The Iowa Utilities Board has accepted the filings of applications for the two Duane Arnold solar projects near Palo and has set a partial procedural schedule moving forward. The IUB announced Friday that it issued an order and accepted the applications for certificates of public convenience, use and necessity for the two projects, Duane Arnold Solar I and II, and has docketed the applications for further investigation. Duane Arnold I is a proposed 50 MW solar facility on 316 acres of agricultural land within an 857-acre project site in Linn County. Duane Arnold II, the larger of the projects, is a proposed 150 MW solar facility and 75 MW battery storage system on 815 acres within a 1,780-acre project site. U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, continues to call for the U.S. to step up the delivery of lethal aid to support Ukraine's battle against a Russian military invasion, including facilitation of the transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets from Poland. Ernst returned Sunday night from leading a bipartisan delegation of nine colleagues on a weekend visit to Poland and Germany. In eastern Poland, Ernst said, the delegation heard from Ukrainian leaders in exile, who “delivered a clear message to the United States: We need more lethal aid weapons, including air defense system, and we need it ASAP.” She's concerned the U.S. aid is not flowing fast enough, blaming “Washington bureaucracy.” Support for this news update was provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, March 2. Wednesday will conclude the pleasant, uncomplicated, sunny part of the week. We will then progress to confused temperature fluctuations leading to rain or snow, depending on the day. According to the National Weather Service on Wednesday it will be mostly sunny with a high near 62 degrees. As Wednesday night passes into Thursday morning there will be increasing chances of snow, with a low around 24 degrees. President Joe Biden vowed in his State of the Union address Tuesday night to check Russian aggression in Ukraine, tame soaring U.S. inflation and deal with the fading but still dangerous coronavirus. President Biden tried throughout his speech to maintain the delicate balance between describing the dangers the nation faces while painting an optimistic picture of its future. One such danger, Russian President Vladimir Putin, was mentioned numerous times as an example of an autocrat who must be stopped by the United States and its Democratic Nato Allies. "Throughout our history we've learned this lesson — when dictators do not pay a price for their aggression, they cause more chaos," Biden said. "They keep moving. And the costs and threats to America and the world keep rising." Ahead of the speech, White House officials acknowledged the mood of the country is "sour," citing the lingering pandemic and inflation. Biden used his remarks to highlight the progress from a year ago with the majority of the U.S. population now vaccinated and millions more people at work, but also acknowledged that the job is not yet done, a recognition of American discontent. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds was selected to give the Republican rebuttal to Biden's speech. Wearing dual American and Ukrainian flag lapel pins, and with the Iowa Capitol in the background, Reynolds spoke for roughly 15 minutes shortly after Biden's address. Reynolds blamed Biden for inflation, rising crime, a botched departure from Afghanistan and Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. Reynolds said Biden's actions helped pave the way for Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to invade Ukraine, specifically citing the Biden administration's waving of sanctions on an oil pipeline in Russia and, according to Reynolds, “focusing on political correctness rather than military readiness.” Gov. Reynolds also used her speech to tout what is being done in Iowa, such as an accelerated demasking during the COVID-19 pandemic and the $1.9 billion in state income tax cuts that https://www.thegazette.com/state-government/iowa-gov-kim-reynolds-signs-into-law-1-9-billion-in-tax-cuts/ (she signed into law earlier Tuesday). One of the Fairfield teens charged with killing his high school Spanish teacher is asking the court to prohibit the public — including the media — from a hearing later this month regarding a motion to move the cases into juvenile court. Lawyers for Jeremy Everett Goodale, 16, in a motion argue that testimony at the reverse waiver hearing will include confidential information that would “hinder” Goodale's ability to have an impartial jury if the information is released to the public before this case is resolved. Under Iowa law, the court can exclude the public from hearings if a judge determines the “possibility of damage or harm to the child outweighs the public's interest in having an open hearing,” according to the motion. Willard Noble Chaiden Miller and Jeremy Everett Goodale, both 16, are accused of killing 66-year-old Nohema Graber. The boys were students at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, where Graber had been teaching Spanish since 2012. Information on a specific motive has not been publicly released. Investigators obtained search warrants for both suspects' homes and found clothing that appeared to have blood on them. A witness who knew the suspects told police the suspects were seen at the park on November 3. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, December 4 and Sunday, December 5. This weekend's weather will be colder than the weather we enjoyed during the week, but still much warmer than the weather that will arrive on Monday. According to a forecast from the National Weather Service, it will be mostly cloudy with a high near 41 degrees on Saturday. On Saturday night it will be mostly cloudy, with a low near 30 degrees. On Sunday the wind will pick up a bit, with cloudy skies and a high near 48 degrees. On Sunday night it is predicted to be blustery, with a low near 20 degrees. A judge will not grant defense requests to lower the $1 million cash-only bail for two 16-year-olds charged with plotting and killing the Spanish language teacher at Fairfield High School. Eighth Judicial District Judge Joel Yates, in his ruling Thursday, said he considered Iowa law on bail, arguments made by attorneys, the nature and circumstances of the crime charged and the family ties and financial resources of the teens, Jeremy Everett Goodale and Willard Noble Chaiden Miller. Goodale and Miller pleaded not guilty Monday and both have trials set for April 19 in Jefferson County District Court. They may not be tried together, but neither of their attorneys have filed anything yet regarding severing their cases. Both teens are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony. They are accused of scheming to kill Nohema Graber, 66, who had taught at Fairfield High since 2012. Authorities found her body Nov. 3 in a Fairfield park just blocks east of the school, where she was known to go for walks. Authorities say social media posts tied the teens to the killing. Patients with Alzheimer 's disease appear to be more likely to die from COVID-19 than those who don't have the neurodegenerative disease, according to new University of Iowa research that could hold implications for ethical vaccine distribution and global policy decisions. The new study, published in the October Journal of Alzheimer's disease, found Alzheimer's patients are 20 percent more likely to die from COVID than others — an important finding as COVID, with its ongoing mutations and variants, “will likely remain a major threat in the coming years.” The UI researchers were able to identify the trend by accessing a health research database containing de-identified medical records of more than 50 million patients — mostly from the United States — through Feb. 17, meaning the data came both before widespread vaccination had been completed and new variants had emerged. Enrollment in Iowa's elementary and secondary schools last academic year dropped for the first time in eight years, according to the latest Condition of Education report Friday. Officials with the state Department of Education reported that last school year's student count of 484,159 in K-12 districts represented a drop of nearly 6,000 students — or just over 1 percent — from the 490,094 total for the 2019-20 school year. State officials said they believe the pandemic to be the greatest contributing factor to the enrollment drop, which was seen at all grade levels but was most pronounced at the preschool and kindergarten levels. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, November 24. Wednesday will feature some of the warmest and coldest temperatures of the week. According to the National Weather Service the day will start mostly cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 58 degrees. On Wednesday night, the wind will become blustery and the temperature will plummet, with a low around 26 degrees and a wind speed of 10 to 20 mph gusting as high as 30 mph. Two Fairfield teens, who authorities say plotted and carried out the “brutal” killing of the Spanish language teacher at their Fairfield High School earlier this month, asked a judge Tuesday to lower their bail to a tenth of the $1 million they each are being held on — and to let them post a fraction of that, instead of paying it in cash. Both defense attorneys argued that according to Iowa law, bail should be something reasonable that Jeremy Everett Goodale and Willard Noble Chaiden Miller, both 16, could pay rather than remain in a juvenile detention center until trial, which may not happen for months. They asked for bail of $100,000 each, to be paid either in cash or by posting a surety bond. Conversely, prosecutors argued Tuesday that because of the callous circumstances of this case, each bail should be doubled to $2 million to protect the community from the teens. https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/fairfield-police-2-students-murdered-spanish-teacher-from-their-high-school/ (Both teens are charged with first-degree murder) and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony. Authorities found her body Nov. 3 in Chautauqua City Park, just blocks east of the school, where she was known to go for walks. The judge said he would provide a written ruling on the bail question next week. Cedar Rapids schools starting this week are getting upgrades to some heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems intended to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Technology called needlepoint bi-polar ionization is being added to some schools' heating, ventilation and air cooling systems to help filter particles out of the air, including viruses like COVID-19, bacteria, mold, dust, dander and smoke. The district did not identify which schools are adding the technology. The project is being paid for from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund. Total cost of the equipment is approximately $1.6 million and the cost of installation will be about $600,000. The district received $32.4 million from the U.S. Department of Education and American Rescue Plan to help offset costs during the pandemic. A 20-year-old Cedar Rapids man was arrested last week on a warrant after investigators connected him to a ride share Veo scooter and shell casings found near the scene of a shooting that seriously injured a man last summer. Cody Michael Adkins is charged with attempted murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, willful injury causing serious injury, going armed with intent and use of a dangerous weapon in commission of a crime. A police investigation identified Adkins and his co-defendant, who hasn't been arrested at this time, as the suspects who opened fire on Archibald Ledsinger and Darian Boyd as they were driving July 1 in Cedar Rapids. According to police, Adkins and the other man walked out directly in front of their vehicle. Words were exchanged and then Adkins and the co-defendant “opened fire” striking Boyd several times, causing serious injuries. The number of casings indicated two guns were involved. 14 shell casings were found at the scene and eventually led to Adkins. A public rideshare scooter had been leased under his co-defendant's name. Are you a fan of trying new restaurants? Well add a little more wind and a warmer evening and you've got Friday. According to the National Weather Service the high in the Cedar Rapids area will be around 55 degrees. A wind of 10 - 15 mph could gust as high as 25 mph. On Friday night it will be mostly clear, with a low around 40 degrees. Two 16-year-old Fairfield students face murder charges in connection with the death of a high school Spanish teacher at the school they attended, authorities said Thursday. Willard Noble Chaiden Miller and Jeremy Everett Goodale, both 16, are accused of killing Nohema Graber, whose body was found Wednesday in a Fairfield park not far from the high school. They are accused of killing Graber, 66, who had taught at Fairfield High School since 2012. It was not disclosed whether she had been the teens' teacher. Fairfield Police said they were able to arrest Miller and Goodale after someone who knew them shared social media posts that contained details of the murder. A motive for the murder has not been released. A defiant Gov. Kim Reynolds on Thursday promised “immediate” legal action over a Biden administration rule requiring larger businesses to have their employees get COVID-19 vaccinations or face regular workplace testing. Reynolds released a statement promising to challenge the new federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration rule on vaccines for employees of companies employing 100 or more. https://www.thegazette.com/federal-government/u-s-mandates-vaccines-or-tests-for-big-companies-by-jan-4/ (Under Thursday's directive), workers at larger businesses will have to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Jan. 4 or face regular testing. According to U.S. Labor Department guidance, workers who choose the testing option may have to bear the cost, as well as being required to wear a face mask on the job beginning Dec. 5. The Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday evening unanimously approved the updated iteration for a development near Hickory Hill Park, that is backed by the Friends of Hickory Hill. The updated proposal for rezoning the 48.75-acre plot northeast of the park is scaled back from previous plans, and devotes nearly three times more land to the city park. Hickory Trail Estates, a senior living facility, would be built on 8.85 acres at the southeast corner of the plot. The facility would have 120 continuing care retirement community units with a total of 134 beds. Residents have opposed previous plans for the project, proposed by Axiom Consultants and Nelson Development, that included single-family homes. The third iteration of the proposal was ultimately rejected by the Iowa City Council. The most recent proposal does not include the single-family housing. A 41-year-old former immigration lawyer facing theft charges in Colorado is being held in the Johnson County Jail in Iowa City, accused of fabricating a positive COVID-19 test from the University of Iowa in an attempt to avoid a mandatory court appearance in Colorado. Emily Elizabeth Cohen was booked at 3:08 p.m. Tuesday on a detainer from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, shortly after she tweeted that the Colorado court system “just had me arrested alleging I lied about having COVID. Tweeting from cop car.” Cohen is scheduled for a 10-day trial in Boulder County in Colorado starting Dec. 6 for 11 felony theft counts stemming from allegations she collected tens of thousands in fees from immigrant families before losing contact with them without producing visas or work permits, according to the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper Are you a fan of trying new restaurants?
