Now that the Oxford High School shooter has finally been sentenced, Oakland County prosecutors shift their focus to his parents. Separate trials are ordered for James and Jennifer based on new character-witness statements submitted to the court. First to be tried, Jennifer Crumbley's seven day trial begins. Expert testimony, witnesses, and a mountain of evidence are stacked against her in the fight to determine her culpability in the murders of four teenagers. When Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald leveled involuntary manslaughter charges against the parents of a teen who killed four classmates and injured seven other people at Oxford High School, many believed she wouldn't get a conviction. Today, James and Jennifer Crumbley are in prison, and another prosecutor in Barrow County, Georgia is attempting a similar approach against the father of the 14-year-old accused of killing four people this week at Apalachee High School. We talked to McDonald about the similarities in the two cases, and about what kinds of circumstances warrant charging parents for the crimes of juvenile offenders. In a tragic turn of events at an Orlando apartment complex, a 10-year-old girl allegedly shot and killed a neighbor following a heated altercation, leading her mother, Lakrisha Isaac, to accept a plea deal just days before her impending trial. Isaac, 33, entered a plea of no contest to charges of manslaughter and culpable negligence after her daughter fatally shot 41-year-old Lashaun Rodgers on May 30, 2022. The plea deal was confirmed through court records obtained by Inside Edition Digital. The deadly incident unfolded during an argument between Isaac and Rodgers, which escalated into a physical confrontation. Allegedly, Isaac handed her daughter her handbag during the altercation, from which the minor retrieved a handgun, loaded a bullet into the gun, and fired a fatal shot at Rodgers. According to witness statements provided to the police, the events leading to the tragic shooting occurred during a Memorial Day weekend celebration at an Orlando apartment complex. Rodgers' boyfriend recounted to authorities that he and Rodgers were outside, cooking on a grill, when Lakrisha Isaac approached them, initiating a confrontation stemming from a recent disagreement between Isaac and Rodgers. The argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation, with Isaac allegedly striking Rodgers, who responded in kind. Attempting to diffuse the situation, Rodgers' boyfriend intervened, but Rodgers attempted to reengage with Isaac. It was during this heated exchange that Isaac's 10-year-old daughter, who had been present throughout the argument, allegedly retrieved a gun from her mother's possession and fatally shot Rodgers in the face. After the shooting, the young girl reportedly exclaimed, "She shouldn't have hit my momma," before Isaac took the gun from her daughter and pointed it at Rodgers' boyfriend. Witness Ashley corroborated the sequence of events, stating she observed the argument escalating into a physical fight before hearing a gunshot and witnessing Isaac pointing the gun at Rodgers' boyfriend. Despite the gravity of the situation, witnesses noted Isaac's apparent lack of remorse as she returned to her apartment following the incident. A video recording of Lakrisha Isaac's interrogation, obtained from the State Attorney's Office, captured her terse response to police questioning: "I ain't got nothing to say to y'all, at all. Don't talk to my baby, either. She's underage. No reason to talk to her." Despite Isaac's reluctance to engage, investigators confirmed that her daughter cooperated, providing her own account of the events that transpired. According to the affidavit, Isaac's daughter informed authorities that her mother was intoxicated and expressed a desire to confront Rodgers "woman to woman." Despite instructions to remain in their apartment, the daughter followed her mother and stood beside her, accompanied by one of Isaac's friends, as the argument escalated. During the altercation, the daughter claimed to have witnessed an individual wielding an unidentified object, which allegedly struck her mother. She believed Rodgers inflicted the blow, resulting in a head injury. Additionally, the daughter observed another person holding a rock during the argument. However, Isaac denied sustaining any injuries when questioned by the police. The affidavit further detailed the daughter's assertion that Rodgers threatened her and her family. Feeling provoked and citing anger issues, the daughter purportedly seized the firearm from Isaac's friend and aimed it above Rodgers' head before firing a single shot, which caused Rodgers to collapse. Although police arrested the minor following the shooting, the State Attorney's Office opted not to try her as an adult. Instead, she faces charges of second-degree murder and has been in a detention center since her arrest, with her case status currently unknown. Isaac's plea deal stipulates five years in prison followed by three years of probation, contingent upon her not being arrested while out on bail before her sentencing hearing on June 21. Additionally, she must attend a four-hour parenting course and undergo substance abuse evaluation and treatment. This tragic incident comes amid heightened scrutiny on parental responsibility in cases involving minors and firearms, following the recent convictions of James and Jennifer Crumbley, parents of school shooter Ethan Crumbley, on charges of involuntary manslaughter in Michigan. State Attorney Monique Worrell expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, "This is one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career. This shooting is an unimaginable tragedy that defies easy solutions." Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Hello everyone, I've missed you.Due to a confluence of factors which I won't waste time or energy going into here, we had a slightly longer hiatus than I expected, but we are back and I expect the content to be a little more regular going forward. This episode is meaningful for a number of reasons. First, I bring on my law partner, Bob Gottlieb of Robert C. Gottlieb and Associates, to discuss the issues surrounding the Crumbley case. Second, while we agree on some of the guideline principles, we do not see perfectly eye to eye on this prosecution. You asked for more viewpoint diversity and variety. I deliver. Third, this is truly a fascinating case because it revisits some of the topics we've discussed in previous episodes, but in a new way.In late November 2021, James and Jennifer Crumbley bought their 15 year old son, Ethan, a Sig Sauer pistol as an early Christmas present. In Oxford, Michigan, where they lived, this was not uncommon or out of the ordinary. Ethan took the requisite safety courses, went to the gun range with his mother, had no history of violence, and was not a problem at school.Regardless, a few days after the pistol was given to him as a gift (though still supposed to be locked in a safe by his parents), Ethan brought both the gun and ammunition to his high school, and killed four people.Ethan pleaded guilty in October 2022 to all the charges and was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole as a 16 year old. But the county prosecutor went on and charged his parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley with manslaughter for their role in facilitating the shooting. The prosecution argued that the parents knew, or at least should have known, that giving their mentally disturbed 15 year old a gun would result in a school shooting. We tackle the question of when a parent can be liable for the acts of their child, especially if the child has already been found fully liable for those acts themselves, and to what degree a parent needs to be fully aware of what is going on their child's life. When does negligent parenting become accessory to homicide?Paul and Bob hope you enjoy the conversation.
What a 15-year-old student unleashed on Oxford High School in 2021, didn't just land himself in prison, he took his mother and father down with him. Jennifer and James Crumbley became the first parents convicted in a US mass shooting, each receiving at least 10 years in prison. Speaking with Sins of the Child podcast creators Jessica Lowther and Cooper Moll, we aim to unpick some of the most complex questions within this story about community, school responsibility and the role parents have in their children's lives. In a tragic turn of events at an Orlando apartment complex, a 10-year-old girl allegedly shot and killed a neighbor following a heated altercation, prompting her mother, Lakrisha Isaac, to accept a plea deal just days before her impending trial. According to witness statements provided to the police, the events leading to the tragic shooting unfolded during a Memorial Day weekend celebration at an Orlando apartment complex. According to the affidavit, Isaac's daughter informed authorities that her mother was intoxicated and expressed a desire to confront Rodgers "woman to women." Despite instructions to remain in their apartment, the daughter followed her mother and stood beside her, accompanied by one of Isaac's friends, as the argument escalated. As James and Jennifer Crumbley awaited sentencing for their conviction for involuntary manslaughter, both sought to avoid jail. Their son Ethan Crumbley is serving life in prison for the school rampage where four were killed and seven others were injured. The gun used was given to the teen as a birthday present by his parents. James, convicted of involuntary manslaughter, asked the judge for "time served" and Jennifer asked the judge to let her serve her time on house arrest in a guest house at her attorney's home. Oakland County Prosecutor Marc Keast has recommended 10-to-15-year jail sentences for both Jennifer and her husband, James. While James was in jail, damning phone conversations surfaced in which Crumbley had allegedly threatened Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. In a call from October 9, 2023, five months before the trial, Crumbley says, “Yeah, Karen McDonald, you're going down. … Go ahead, record this call. Send it to Karen McDonald. Tell her how James Crumbley is going to f------ take her down." In a call on December 23, 2023, Crumbley says “There will be retribution, believe me." The threats were bad enough that Crumbley's jail communication privileges were revoked during his trial. Neither received the sentence they asked for. James and Jennifer Crumbley seem to be a mess and are probably sociopathic. They did a lot of things wrong, a lot of parents do, but buying a gun for their disturbed son, while pretending to buy it for themselves, is another thing entirely. They have also verbally attacked the families of the victims that their son killed. What struck me about this is where it occurred: north of Detroit. In this same area, there are many acts of violence perpetrated by young people who were failed by their parents. So, why are these parents on trial? I am not saying I disagree with the sentence, but I am asking, why them? Is it a race thing or something else? What about all the other kids who have gone haywire? We also take a look at the media's portrayal of Dexter Reed. Does it remind you of anyone? What does God's Word say? Deuteronomy 6:7-12 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.Episode 1,525 Links:Parents of Michigan School Shooter Ethan Crumbley Sentenced to 10-15 Years in PrisonJames Crumbley accused of making threats from jail as more witnesses take the standJames and Jennifer Crumbley sentenced in son's school shootingProsecutor: Crumbley's statements were disappointingDexter Reed's mother blasts Chicago police for killing her son, appears to think that Reed's death is the police's fault. “They took my son away from me,” his mother Nicole Banks said. A good rule of thumb to not get shot by police is to not shoot at the police.New video footage shows police officers firing 96 shots at Reed in less than a minute. Today's Headlines: Arizona's Supreme Court upheld a near-total abortion ban, initially enacted in 1864, which makes nearly all abortion procedures illegal, without exceptions for rape or incest, to be enforced within 45 days. However, efforts to counteract this ban are already in motion, with plans to amend the state constitution directly on the November ballot to safeguard abortion rights, gathering significant support with over 500,000 signatures. In a separate development, concerns have been raised by Republican congressmen about the infiltration of Kremlin propaganda within their own party, highlighting the broader challenge of combating foreign influence and misinformation within the American political landscape. Additionally, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced new regulations targeting toxic pollution from over 200 chemical plants across the United States, aiming to reduce the risk of cancer for nearby communities. In court case updates, James and Jennifer Crumbley were sentenced to 10-15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter charges related to their son Ethan Crumbley's mass shooting, where he killed four classmates and received a life sentence without parole while The European Court of Human Rights ruled in favor of over 2,000 Swiss women who sued the government for failing to address climate change adequately, potentially forcing Switzerland to reduce fossil fuel consumption and Donald Trump's attempt to sue Judge Juan Merchan to delay his campaign finance trial was denied. Finally, Cowboy Carter made Beyoncé the first Black woman to top Billboard's country albums chart since its inception in 1964. A federal appeals court on Tuesday rejected Donald Trump's immunity claim and ruled that he can be put on trial over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Jennifer Crumbley becomes the first parent in the United States to be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for a mass school shooting committed by her son, Ethan. She was convicted of four counts of involuntary manslaughter and faces a maxium sentence of 60 years in prison. Prosecutors said Jennifer Crumbley knew her son was struggling with mental health issues. They alleged instead of getting him the help he needed, Jennifer and her husband, James Crumbley, bought Ethan the gun he later used in the attack. The prosecution also showed the Crumbleys were attempting to flee when they realized they were going to be charged in the crime. James Crumbley faces the same charges as his wife, on March 5.
