Natural mummy of a man who lived about 3,300 BCE

When German hikers Erika and Helmut Simon stumbled upon a dead body in the Oertzel Alps on 19th September, 1991, they believed it to be a recently fallen mountaineer, whose cadaver had been preserved in the ice. In fact, the specimen turned out to be 5,300 years old - older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids. The man, nicknamed ‘Ötzi' by the press, had been struck down in mid-stride, and was discovered surrounded by his possessions, which included a copper axe. His remains are now on permanent display in Italy. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly probe into the various theories about how ‘the Iceman' died; reveal what the post-mortem told us were the contents of his last meal; and consider the ‘Curse of the Frozen Mummy'... Was wird ihm nochmal alles vorgeworfen?

The paleo-diet is still quite a thing and this week, Tom and Sandra talk about the differences between the "new" paleo and the original paleo as eaten by a man now known as Oetzi or Ötzi. He was a shepherd found after being dying in the mountains between modern day Italy and Austria and Switzerland. Covered in ice for centuries, we now know what he ate a few hours before being shot in the back with an arrow in his late forties or early fifties, about 5,400 years ago. Now, thanks to Oetzi, you can now order a meal based on foods that he used to eat - or at least as close as we can get today.

This week in the History of France in English, Episode 5, we take a look at the copper age in what would become Gaul, specifically we'll look at the life and death and discovery of Otzi or Oetzi, the Ice Man of Austria and Italy. Otzi is the name given to the man found after glaciers melted in the Alps, revealing his body after 5,300 years. He was found in an area that Gauls would occupy later on in northern Italy when it was called Cisalpine Gaul. We'll also have another Cocktail Party Slapdown with the story of the French cavalry along with the Provincial Marine, riding to save the day at the Battle of Balaclava.
