This week we're diving into a cult classic — Escape from the Planet of the Apes — and it's all thanks to our great Patreon supporter, Leigh! Leigh's not just a top supporter; he also runs a fantastic YouTube channel called Movie Vent where he shares his love for all things cinema with Ventriloquist dummy, Ned. Check it out at youtube.com/@ventmovies.Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) marked a clever shift in the Planet of the Apes franchise, driven by budget constraints and the desire to keep the series alive after the apocalyptic ending of the previous film. Director Don Taylor stepped in to helm the project, which reversed the formula by bringing the apes into the contemporary human world instead of humans stumbling into the apes' future. The screenplay, written by Paul Dehn, embraced elements of satire and social commentary, while working within a significantly smaller budget than its predecessors. To keep costs down, much of the action was set in familiar, modern-day Los Angeles locations, and only a few characters required full prosthetic makeup compared to the previous films' elaborate ape societies. The production leaned heavily on the strong performances of Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter, reprising their roles as Cornelius and Zira, to carry the emotional weight of the story. Special effects were kept minimal, but John Chambers' iconic makeup design for the apes remained a standout. The studio saw Escape as a gamble, pivoting the franchise from large-scale spectacle to a more character-driven drama with underlying themes of fear, prejudice, and destiny. Despite initial doubts, the movie was a financial success and breathed new life into the series, paving the way for even more sequels down the line.If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where the future is doomed, three apes take one last chance... and crash-land straight into 1970s America! Hailed as celebrities but hunted as threats, Cornelius, Zira, and Dr. Milo must navigate a society that's as fascinated by them as it is terrified of what they represent. This episode we are going back to one of our favorite places, a little world known as the Planet of the Apes! But this time, we're going to explore...Beneath the Planet of the Apes!Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) was the second film in the original Apes franchise, and it went down quite a different path than the first. The Planet Ape -I mean, 8 - crew, along with our special guest, Lord Blood-Rah, will discuss all the myriad details behind how the film came to be made, as well as walk through the storyline. There were a number of ideas thrown around in the initial stages of the film, which involved bringing back Rod Serling and author Pierre Boule, but none of these really stuck. It was only when British poet and screenwriter Paul Dehn was brought in that the plot solidified.Making a sequel back then was unusual and seen as a shoddy money-grab, and Apes star Charlton Heston really didn't want to do it. He was ultimately convinced to do a cameo appearance, so a new lead had to be found, and James Franciscus, who had primarily appeared on television, filled the bill. Much of the cast of the first film returned, including Maurice Evans as Dr. Zaius, Kim Hunter as Zira, and Linda Harrison as Nova. Roddy McDowall was not available so actor David Watson stepped in. James Gregory gives a notable performance as gorilla General Ursus, a role originally offered to the legendary Orson Welles! The story builds to a confrontation between the ape military and the human mutants who live underground in the Forbidden Zone. The mutants are disturbing not only visually but for their bizarre worship of their doomsday bomb. With this film, we get a whole second culture to explore on the planet, one that in many ways is more threatening than the apes. The mutants are horrifically scarred but possess powerful mental abilities of telepathy, mind control and the ability to cast illusions. The moment when the mutants are shown praying to their god provides a massive shock moment. The film ends with (SPOILER) Heston's Taylor pushing the final button to set off the Alpha-Omega bomb, thus igniting the atmosphere and destroying the Earth. Famously Heston and producer Dick Zanuck thought that this would prevent any more sequels from being made -a fair conclusion - but this was not the case. But that's a tale for another episode! For our Sensor Sweep, our good friend Lord Blood-Rah updates us on his latest and greatest goings ons: check out his podcast, Lord Blood-Rah's Nerve Wrackin' Auditorium, which can be found on most podcast aps or Anchor.fm/Lord Blood-Rah to hear old time radio horror. THE FINAL CHAPTER (not really but bear with us) of the Ape Saga brings us to Battle for the Planet of the Apes, an anticlimactic conclusion to the first five groundbreaking science fiction films that blinded us with promise before fading like a dying star. Listen as we pontificate upon two new releases (Jungle Cruise and The Green Knight) before diving into yet another discussion of the primate franchise's scattershot concoction of philosophy and monkey-fueled mayhem. Our laborious trek through the Forbidden Zone continues with our fourth entry into the primate parables with Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, quite easily the greatest fourthquel (is that even a word?) ever made. Listen as we examine this franchise's unlikely stamina through its reflection of a contemporary culture jaded by the unfulfilling answers to the weighty promises of the past decade's Civil Rights Movement, some unfortunately subpar makeup from a series that once set industry standards, a litany of ape vs. human violence in the film's thrilling yet indecisive third act, and an appreciation of the great Don Murray. Hope you got your favorite monkey suit handy because we're going to a costume party you'll never forget with Escape from the Planet of the Apes, 1971's addition to the franchise that once bravely asked you to go ape. Listen as we walk through this third entry's attempt to put a silk hat on a chimpanzee by time traveling to the groovy early 1970s while inventing new ways to keep a series fresh in its unexpected charting of a dark and gloomy future.
Gaska, à qui l'on doit les romans Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes et Death of the Planet of the Apes (cf. C&Z ep. All aboard the murder train! This week, the Roundtablers set off from Istanbul with Hercule Poirot and a star-studded cast to review Murder on the Orient Express. This 1974 classic, based on Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel, was written by Paul Dehn and directed by Sidney Lumet. Each week one of the Story Grid Editors—Jarie Bolander, Valerie Francis, Anne Hawley, Kim Kessler, or Leslie Watts—pitches a film as an example of a significant story principle. The rest of us explore different aspects of the principle so we can all understand it better. Click here for the full show notes.
"I did it because I like chimpanzees best of all apes, and you the best of all chimpanzees." Twentieth Century Fox had found that cheap sequels could turn healthy profits so immediately booked Paul Dehn, the writer of Beneath the Planet of the Apes, to write a third in the series. Unfortunately, the second film ended with the planet being blown up. For Dehn, that was just a thrilling challenge to overcome, and overcome it he did. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Planet of the Apes series with Don Taylor's 1971 film Escape From the Planet of the Apes. We talk about the tonal shifts all through the film as well as many of the story problems, yet how it still provides an incredibly fun experience. We look at the wonderful performances by Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter as our two lead chimpanzees and give them credit for how affecting the film (and particularly the ending) is. We ponder some of the screenplay choices they used to retcon the series but find ourselves forgiving them because they end up working out pretty well. We touch on Jerry Goldsmith and his funky 70s score. And we marvel at the strength of the film's ending and how well it works. It's a film that feels like it's all over the place but is still an absolute joy to watch. We have a great time talking about it on this week's show, so check it out then tune in!
