Pixar's Inside Out introduced us to the core emotions inside an 11-year-old girl named Riley. We met Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), and Anger (Lewis Black). In Inside Out 2, Riley is experiencing puberty and a whole new crop of emotions have popped up. Most notably Anxiety (Maya Hawke) who has literally bottled up Riley's original core emotions and sent them hurtling into the back of her mind, where they plot to get back and set things right. We want to hear your opinions about summer snacks. Directed by Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, it's streaming on Max.We want to hear your opinions about summer snacks. Are you Team Hot Dog or Team Hamburger? What's better: churro or a funnel cake? Netflix's entertaining dark comedy Hit Man is not about a hired killer. It's about a guy who pretends to be a hired killer. Director Richard Linklater co-wrote this film with movie star of the moment, Glen Powell. Based very loosely on a real guy, Powell plays a mild-mannered professor who also works undercover for the police as a fake hitman. We want to hear your opinions about summer snacks. The venerable British science fiction series Doctor Who is back with a new season. Ncuti Gatwa — who is Black and openly queer — brings a vibrant energy to the story of an alien who travels through space and time in a blue box. The series, now streaming on Disney+, also features the return of showrunner Russell T. Davies, who birthed the modern era of Doctor Who. But what does this mix of new and old mean for the sci-fi institution? We want to hear your opinions about summer snacks. Are you Team Hot Dog or Team Hamburger? Sometimes, our favorite musical artists are too good to be true because they're sprung from the imaginations of Hollywood screenwriters. But what makes a fake band great? Today, we are debating the best fictional bands in TV and film — including from Mamma Mia!, Josie and the Pussycats, It's Your Move, and Miami Connection. Sam sits in the guest seat at Pop Culture Happy Hour to discuss the glue that holds this nation together — The Fast and the Furious franchise. Alongside NPR White House correspondent Ayesha Rascoe, as well as PCHH hosts Linda Holmes and Aisha Harris, the group talks about the legacy of the decades-spanning series, why we love to hate it, and how action films of this caliber could be considered "hetero camp."You can follow us on Twitter @NPRItsBeenAMin and email us at samsanders@npr.org.
When we asked our listeners to tell us which Muppets were their favorites, we knew you'd all come through. More than 6,000 people cast over 18,000 votes, and those votes have been tallied. This is the PCHH audience's definitive ranking of the best Muppets.
Something's making all of us happy this week: it's guest players Linda Holmes, Glen Weldon, and Aisha Harris from NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour! These three cohorts begin their face-off with our take on a PCHH favorite: The Regrettable Television [pops cheek] Pop Quiz — all about the worst and weirdest tv premieres of 2020. Then, it's the return deciphering groan-worthy wordplay via movie-food mashups in Apocalypse Chow Redux, with an all new set of culinary clues based on movies. It all wraps up with a set of Lightning Rounds that are truly tailor-made for today's contestants. Support Us On Patreon

We're a little late but still celebrating Kelsey's week of content delight and talking about The Americans' series finale. Then, we borrow an idea from PCHH fan requests and discuss fast food restaurants. Kirstie has some advice for road trippers and throws (undeserved) shade at the 99. Other highlights include an important Grand Designs red alert and a Perd Hapley appearance. We're members of the Thought Bubble Audio Network. Your road map to this week's entertainment-themed episode:00:34 The Good Place: We gobbled up three episodes ("Tahani Al-Jamil," "Jason Mendoza," and "Category 55 Emergency Doomsday") like so much Thanksgiving gravy and stuffing. Mmm, stuffing.07:52 The West Wing: On "Election Night," we get a little bit of everything: triumph, tears, LOLs, and a growing sense of dread for Sam Seaborn. Mentioned: the West Wing Weekly podcast.18:39 Challenge Round: The Big Sick: Catherine challenged Terri to watch this well-done and deeper than usual romcom (hear her talk about it on our September 5 episode). Terri was glad for the forced viewing. Mentioned: The movie's writer and star Kumail Nanjiani on PCHH and the Sporkful. For next week, Terri challenged Catherine to watch some Hill Street Blues (after consulting with Alan Sepinwall): season 1, episode 1, “Hill Street Station,” and season 3, episode 1, “Trial by Fury.” We're doing two since The West Wing Weekly podcast is taking a week off, so we won't be watching The West Wing. We will still watch The Good Place ("What We Owe to Each Other," "The Eternal Shriek," and "Most Improved Player," all from season 1).And in case you need a little extra lead time, for a future challenge we will be reading Sepinwall's book The Revolution Was Televised. Grab it and get started! For quotes, archives, and more, visit us at http://parentingroundabout.com.
Our next franchise is a Robert Zemeckis classic. We talk about different kinds of time travel (Rob has A Theory!), history repeating itself, and how this is a very different film on later viewing. This Week's Watching THE RAID (2011): Gareth Evans, Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim THE MARTIAN (2015): Ridley Scott, Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain Recommendations SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL (1987): Howard Deutch, Eric Stoltz, Mary Stuart Masterson BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE (1989): Steven Herek, Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter THE GOOD WIFE (2009–2016): Robert King, Michelle King, Julianna Margulies ADDAM'S FAMILY VALUES (1993): Barry Sonnenfeld, Anjelica Huston, Raúl Juliá Footnotes The Indonesian martial art whose name Sam so thoroughly butchered is Pencak Silat; for more on this, see here. This BFI list has some good lesser-known exponents of the time travel genre in film. Here's a short introduction to the Oedipus complex, for those unfamiliar with it. And, finally, here's a good working definition of dramatic irony, a concept that we touch on towards the end of today's episode ('GCSE Bitesize' might seem a bit of a basic resource, but it can actually be really useful). Podcasts We're supporting the ‘trypod' initiative this month (or at least we are when we remember!) Here are our recommendations (though Sam might change his PCHH tip after hearing this week's level of snark about BEAUTY AND THE BEAST…) ‘The Comedian's Comedian Podcast' (COMEDY/PERFORMANCE: @comcompod) ‘The Partly Political Broadcast' (POLITICS: @parpolbro) ‘NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour' (POP CULTURE: @pchh) ‘Lift-off' (SPACE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING: from @_relayfm) ‘D&D is for Nerds' (D&D: from @sanspantsradio) ‘The British History Podcast' (HISTORY: @britishpodcast) These Twitter links should take you to iTunes, Stitcher, Overcast, or however you consume podcasts. (Sam likes Overcast, but that may just be because he thinks the logo's cool.) Have a listen to those that take your fancy — and remember to recommend THIS podcast (very important!) using the hashtag #trypod.
Today we ask ourselves the age old question: which to consume first, the book or the movie? The answer may surprise you! In our discussion, we relate our experiences with various forms of adapted media including Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Superhero movies and comics, Game of Thrones, Gone Girl, Harry Potter, and more! We also play the hit card game "Geek Out" and try to stump each other with trivia! Stay tuned for our random recs: The "My Dad Wrote a Porno" podcast and Westworld. Spoiler: they are awesome As always, our amazing intro/outro music is "We are Highscore" by Krackatoa

The PCHH gang couldn't tape a show this week, so instead we bring you two interviews. First, Linda Holmes chats with Fred Armisen about his illustrious career in a never-been-heard outtake from our live show in 2015. Then Linda interviews Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, the creators of Welcome to Night Vale. Holmes spoke with the writers in late 2015, at an event hosted by Politics & Prose and the Sixth & I.

When Linda Holmes and Stephen Thompson, the hosts of the wonderful NPR podcast Pop Culture Happy Hour, came on Ask Me Another, we gave them a game that was, admittedly, kind of hard. Well! Vengeance was sworn against our Ophira and Jonathan. You can hear the vengeance this Friday (8/29/14) when PCHH drops its newest episode, but first, let's revisit that fateful game.
