Barbara Bray is a creative learning strategist who has been on a journey to transform teaching and learning. Her story goes down multiple paths that helped her find what she is passionate about and been fighting for. Through her work as a teacher, adjunct professor, instructional designer, speaker, coach, and writer, Barbara has been exploring ways she can make a difference in children's lives. Starting in 1997, Barbara wrote a professional development column for CUE for 17 years, created her platform, My eCoach, and posted often on her website Rethinking Learning. In 2012, she co-founded Personalize Learning, LLC, and co-authored Make Learning Personal and How to Personalize Learning with Kathleen McClaskey. Barbara realized that she was focusing on how to change teaching but the rationale for teachers to want to change was missing. In 2017, Barbara started her Rethinking Learning podcast and the #rethink_learning Twitter chat with her co-host, Shelly Vohra. It was the stories all along that impacted her. She wasn't living her life on purpose until she told her story and listened to the stories from inspirational thought leaders. She has been an advocate for educators for years through coaching and providing resources. Now she takes the stories deeper. This is why she wrote Define Your WHY: to help anyone who is searching to discover or rediscover their WHY so they can live and learn on purpose. #DefineYourWhy Contact Information Email: barbara.bray@gmail.com Website/Blog: Rethinking Learning Podcast: Rethinking Learning Podcast Founder/Owner, My eCoach Co-author: Make Learning Personal and How to Personalize Learning New Book "Define Your Why" #DefineYourWhy @EduMatchPublishing Twitter: @bbray27 #rethink_learning LinkedIn: barbarabray Google+: +Barbara Bray Facebook: barbara.bray Pinterest: bbray27 Skype: barbarabray48 Voxer: barbarabray48 Instagram: bbray27 TeachSDGs Ambassador Cohort 3 Wakelet webinar: https://youtu.be/j8N9iOAB-8g

For our Season 2 finale, we feature Barbara Bray, who recently released her new book, Define Your WHY. From Barbara's website (barbarabray.net): About Barbara Barbara is a Creative Learning Strategist who believes that anyone at any age can learn and that everyone has a WHY. She works with schools, districts, individuals, businesses, and non-profit agencies around the world. Her dream has been to create an online place that was safe and secure with all the tools and resources all in one place. She did it with My eCoach as early as 1999 — way before there were blogs, wikis, Twitter or Facebook. Barbara is what you call a “Digital Pioneer.” She coined and trademarked the phrase “Making Learning Personal” in 2000 and trademarked it in 2002. Barbara founded Personalize Learning in 2012 with Kathleen McClaskey. After several years and two books later, they decided to do what they do best. Barbara is now doing keynotes, strategic planning, presentations, playshops, webinars, interviews all over the world along with hosting her podcast, and is writing her new book, Define Your WHY to expand on her keynotes and presentations about the WHY. Barbara is a teacher, writer, disruptor, risk-taker, instructional designer, connector, and visionary. People call her a “change-maker.” Whenever anyone told Barbara she couldn’t do something, she took it more like a challenge. Barbara co-authored two books on personalized learning: Make Learning Personal and How to Personalize Learning. She wrote a regular column on professional development for OnCUE (CUE) for over 17 years and continues to blog on this site and writes chapters in books, articles, and as guest posts on other blogs. She works tirelessly to find and research new tools and methods that help educators create learner-centered environments and to find their purpose. Now with multiple opportunities to network using social media and join various online communities, teachers and learners are confused. Barbara makes it her job to determine what is authentic, valid, cost-effective, safe, user-friendly, and relevant for her clients. She is relentlessly researching how to personalize the learning so learners of all ages can develop their passions so they discover their WHY so they can live and learn on purpose. Personalized learning has been an education buzzword for several years. A recent survey of by the state education technology directors association, or SETDA, put personalized learning at the top of the list of state priorities. But how do school leaders really do personalized learning? A new book offers something like a step-by-step manual. It’s called Pathways to Personalization: A Framework for School Change, written by two long-time school innovators, Cathy Sanford and by our guest today, Shawn Rubin. Rubin spent 10 years in the classroom, and he has been the Chief Education officer at the HIghlander Institute since 2011, and has led personalized learning efforts in Rhode Island schools. He designed the Highlander Institute’s “Fuse” program, which trains educators to lead personalized learning in schools and districts. His new book offers a five-step framework to help school leaders and teacher teams design and implement blended and personalized learning initiatives based on local needs and interests. EdSurge sat down with Rubin during the EdSurge Fusion conference in October, to talk about his book and what he’s learned about personalized learning.

Today, the Getting Smart team is going international. Tom recently visited the Singapore American School (for his second time!) and is incredibly excited to share all about the signs of progress happening over there.   With a tradition of academic excellence, Singapore American School serves 4,000 preschool to 12th-grade students. After serving as a District Superintendent in Washington State, Dr. Chip Kimball joined SAS as Superintendent in 2012. The board asked Kimball to make the school as good at life prep as it was at college prep. The six-year transformation that ensued is a remarkable story of reinvention at scale.   In this episode, Tom speaks with Dr. Chip Kimball, along with Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Sparrow, who has deep roots at SAS and has been with them for 20 years (10 of those having led the academic team). Together, they tell Tom the SAS story and all of the exciting progress that has been happening — from talent, to care and guidance, to high-impact instructional strategies.   Key Takeaways: [:15] About today’s episode with Tom, Chip Kimball, and Jennifer Sparrow. [1:10] Tom welcomes Chip and Jennifer to the podcast. [1:21] Tom’s and Chip’s background together, and why Chip decided to join SAS in 2012. [2:50] Chip’s progress in shaping SAS’s education and facility. [5:26] Jennifer’s background as an international educator, and what originally drew her to SAS. [8:12] Tom highlights some of the remarkable progress at Singapore American School since he last visited (two years ago), such as the talent agenda. [11:18] Jennifer’s and Chip’s thoughts on fostering talent and the importance of their institutional commitments. [14:18] About SAS’s professional learning communities (PLC.) [15:20] Jennifer speaks about how they continue to support, encourage, and monitor their PLC practices. [17:05] Chip speaks about some of the investments that they’ve made to strengthen their PLC practices. [20:44] Tom highlights another sign of remarkable progress at Singapore American School: care and guidance (such as adding more social-emotional programming). Jennifer and Chip speak about their work towards this and the progress they’ve made. [22:53] Two more signs of remarkable progress at Singapore American School: better response intervention and PLC (What if kids don’t get it? How do we intervene? And if they do get it, how do we accelerate their learning?) [26:11] Why Chip decided to break the roles of college counseling and pastor of care into two. [30:27] Jennifer and Chip speak about the next step to the work that starts with responsive classrooms: advisory. [32:29] A focal point of SAS: mentoring (both for students and from students). [34:24] Jennifer and Chip talk high impact instructional strategies at SAS. [37:40] What is “try time” for students in middle school? [43:23] About SAS’s three tiers of inquiry-based learning. [45:33] About SAS’s personalized inquiry catalyst graduation requirement. [47:45] One of SAS’s most ambitious changes: becoming a leading AP factory and then scaling that back by strategically replacing AP courses with more advanced topic courses created by teachers and college faculty. [52:10] Another academic area SAS is making huge progress in — competency-based learning. [56:03] About SAS’s new learning spaces on campus. [1:02:57] Tom congratulates Chip and Jennifer in the progress they’ve made at SAS.   If You Enjoyed Learning about Singapore American school, be sure to check out: Episode 162: “Personalize Learning and Build Agency by Using the 4 PLC  Questions,” featuring Tim Stuart.   Mentioned in This Episode: Singapore American School   Get Involved: Check out the blog at GettingSmart.com.
