Fierce femme dinosaurs, intersex embodiment, Laura Dern – it's surprisingly easy to read Jurassic Park as a feminist celebration of monstrous queer bodies, at least when you have the magnificent Hannah McGregor by your side. In Hannah's ‘bookiest book yet,' we learn about lesbian dinosaurs, the ignorance of white male adventurers, and how and why they're erotically eviscerated for their flaws. Mark Deutsch is a brilliant and unique musician who has devoted the last 3 decades of his life to his instrument the Bazantar, which is unique to him. There is only one Bazantar, which is a double bass hybrid with elements of the sitar: it has 6 main strings, 4 drone strings, and 29 sympathetic strings. Mark grew up as a multi-instrumentalist, but primarily a classical, jazz and rock bass player, and gave up a successful career as a performer to devote himself to the Bazantar. While studying sitar with Ustad Imrat Khan, Mark begin delving into the universal fundamentals of music and its underlying frequency structures. The nonlinear mathematical patterns that exist in sound are found universally in the natural world, includeng seashells, and Mark goes into some of the math of the overtone series in some detail, as well as fascinating specifics of how the Bazantar and his playing of it have evolved. You'll hear Mark talk about how he developed his patented engineering solution to construct a separate housing for the sympathetic strings. In this episode, Mark demonstrated live, and also is sharing not only excerpts from previously released recordings, but a preview from an upcoming album. Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 10 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Diving into our first interview this week, we have Montana Dobrovich-Fago talking with Patrick Smith, the head of visualization at MPC Visualization Studios, a major visual effects company in Los Angeles. Through the interview we learn about Patrick's past studying computer animation at Savannah College of Arts and Design, to his current role at MPC where he has worked on projects such as Avengers: Infinity War, Nope, Prehistoric Planet, and Emmy award winning Chip ‘N' Dale: Rescue Rangers. Patrick discusses what it is like to Head the visualization department including where he finds creative freedom in the position, and how he and his department navigated shifts in the industry due to COVID19. They conclude with some tips and tricks from Patrick for creatives hoping to navigate a similar career. Gianna Ormonde brings us to a close this week with her interview of Bloom Nutrition's Head of Creative Marketing, Nareh Vartanian. Ormonde leads in with Vartanian's education background by discussing her degree in Creative Advertising from Michigan University. The pair go on to discuss how Nareh started as a Graphic Designer for Bloom and what the journey then was to Head of Creative Marketing with this growing company. They also discuss what is entailed in being the head of a creative department, including some of the struggles and challenges she has encountered in the role. The pair end the interview with Vartanian reflecting on some personal experiences and offering insight and advice to those hoping to carve out a career in the Creative and Cultural Industries.

EPISODE 91: Kara Talve is an in-demand composer and multi-instrumentalist for film and television and, as a leading composer at Bleeding Fingers Music, has strengthened a variety of projects through her extraordinary talent and keen collaboration abilities. Most recently, she scored Apple TV+'s Prehistoric Planet alongside Hans Zimmer and Anže Rozman, which was narrated by David Attenborough and produced by Jon Favreau in conjunction with BBC Studios' Natural History Unit. The score, which features custom-built, otherworldly instruments blended with an 80-piece orchestra has received global acclaim, including a win for Best Original Score for a Documentary Series at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMMAs) and a nomination for the 2022 Bulldog Television Broadcast Awards. The soundtrack of Prehistoric Planet has, to date, claimed over 80 million streams. Captivated by music from a young age, Anze was improvising and composing his own tunes on the piano at just nine years old. After earning a degree in composition and music theory from the Academy of Music in Ljubljana (graduating summa cum laude) and going on to pursue a master's degree in scoring music for film, TV, and video games at Berklee College of Music in Valencia, Spain, Anže's final project at Berklee (a 3-minute orchestral piece recorded at Air Studios in London) caught the attention of Hans Zimmer and led to an invitation to join Bleeding Fingers Music as a full-time composer in 2018. He currently resides in Los Angeles. karatalve.com | archestralmusic.comContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

We are talking dinosaurs again! Dustin Growick a.k.a. The Dinosaur Whisperer, with a master's degree in anthropology, Dustin chose to become the dinosaur expert. As a science communicator, he is one of the originals at "Museum Hack" on what would be truly a renegade experience. We kick off the talk with Neil deGrasse Tyson's wine shots story at science parties and go all the way to the theory of "love lakes" and dinosaur sex... we were curious... Dustin shares with us fun facts about our favorite dinosaurs, what is the most important part of his storytelling craft as the museum tour guide, his experience on fieldwork, and his relationship with paleontologists. We debate the "Origin of Species" and its position today, Prehistoric Planet, Jurassic Park, and other adaptations. Dustin is the legit dinosaur expert!
