Why are there so many wild turkeys in this town? Mass Audubon's Tia Pinney has answers and tips for avoiding confrontation with our feathered friends, or should I say enemies...BE THE BIGGER TURKEY. Even though 5 doctors had cleared Jessica Pinney for a vaginal delivery with her rare placental conditions of vasa previa and velamentous cord insertion, she listened to her intuition and decided to have a planned surgical birth for her first child. For her next pregnancy, listening to her intuition led her to have a homebirth. She shares with Adriana how these different circumstances led to very different models of care, how they impacted her postpartum experiences, and how much her confidence and knowledge have grown because of it. For more than a decade, Greg Mickells led the Madison Public Library. He's responsible for a significant transformation of the Madison library system. His tenure as Director took him to three continents, and to the White House in 2016, when Madison Public Library was recognized with a National Medal for Museum and Library Service. Additional awards received under Mickells' leadership include a Wisconsin Innovation Award for "The Bubbler" program, and as a Top Innovator by the Urban Libraries Council in the Race and Social Equity category.Under his hand, the Library has transformed significantly over the last decade. Three libraries - Central, Meadowridge, and Pinney - have been expanded and renovated. The Library's taken over the Wisconsin Book Festival, launched The Bubbler program, launched the Dream Bus, and navigated safe library service during the pandemic. Dozens of community-based partnerships have been established under his leadership. As of February 2, Mickells is retired from his post as Director of the Madison Library System, after eleven years at the helm. He was feted earlier this month with a retirement party, where foundation Executive Director Conor Moran, Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, Madison Public Library Board President Alyssa Kenney, staff, community partners, and friends praised Greg for his kindness, care for his staff, and vision for making Madison Public Library a national and even international leader in the library world.WORT host David Ahrens - who got the chance to work with Mickells as a former Madison alder - sat down with Mickells shortly before his retirement for this exit interview.

Beer has never been “just beer.” It can divide as well as it can unite. Some efforts to use beer as a force for good have resulted in initiatives that call for an end to sexual violence, raise money for lifesaving medical research, and even promote literacy. Among those leading the charge to use beer as a force for good are the duo behind Hana Koa Brewing Company in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Head brewer Josh Kopp and director of operations Chrissie Pinney launched Hana Koa in 2019, and from day one, focused on goals of sustainability, community building, and social good. Their most ambitious initiative, called Shine a Light, supports survivors of sexual assault and seeks proactive change to prevent sexual violence from occuring in the future. In this episode, you'll hear from Chrissie and Josh as they outline the brewery's origins, their own backstories, and how their upbringings led them to want to do good wherever they can, using the brewery as a conduit to make the world a better place. In the conversation you're about to hear, we do discuss things like rape, assault, and other potentially triggering topics, so please use caution when listening. But you'll also hear how the pair balances a responsibility to their community with self-care and where they manage to find joy, even when carrying heavy burdens of trauma and struggle. Chrissie says beer is much more than a beverage, and I tend to agree with her.
Want to learn how to tune into your emotional health and experience spiritual rest? Today I am sharing an interview I recently did on my good friend's podcast, Attuned For Wholeness with Lisa Pinney. Lisa is an anxiety and unresolved trauma coach. She and her team decided to develop an app to make emotional health, wholeness, and spiritual rest a regular part of daily living. It's much more than mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing for stress relief. It's called the Get Attuned App. This new app combines self-awareness, with the ability to navigate through difficult, confusing, painful emotions and be able to connect with God in ways that bring us back to a place of calm and deep rest. It will soon be released on Google Play and Apple store. I am also an approved coach on the Get Attuned App. Learn more: https://www.wholenessinpractice.com/ Connect with Lisa IG: https://www.instagram.com/lpinney1/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lisapinney996?lang=en I am a Spiritual Growth and Emotional Wellness Coach. Are negative experiences from your past preventing you from thriving today? Like many, I didn't realize how past negative or traumatic experiences were affecting my present life, and I felt stuck in a cycle of distress. I had created a cycle of self-sabotaging I didn't even realize. In today's episode, my good friend and personal resiliency coach Lisa Pinney joins me to discuss how we all can take steps towards healing with practical tools and techniques to help you regain control over your life. We want to help you learn how to process, heal, and move on from the pain so that you can find peace, joy and clarity in life. “It's impossible to process emotional pain with rational thinking.” Some of what we discuss is like a coaching session: Identifying Self-Care Strategies to Promote Positive Emotional Well-Being. Facing pain of past experiences, ways to cope with negative experiences. •importance of self awareness of our emotional needs, being reflective and doing the heart work •recognize how we reinforce negative experiences by repeating them in my every day conversations. •why we cannot ignore or avoid painful emotions or memories •common false or limiting beliefs •recognizing the inner critic that “should” do this or that •recognize unhealthy coping strategies such as self-protection, self-sabotaging, procrastination… •what negative story are you telling yourself •what is motive behind behavior or actions •how to get curious about how you are feeling Spiritual growth and emotional wellness are connected. If you are wanting personal coaching from either myself or Lisa, we have some spots available. Our guest this week is Dr. J.T Pinney, a family medicine physician with specialized training in non-surgical sports medicine. Dr. Pinney joins us to discuss athletic injuries and trauma and how to respond to them. This episode was recorded with athletes, coaches, school and sports officials and parents in mind.
Margaux Pinney is a Sandler Fellow at UCSF and in our conversation we discuss her journey to become a scientist & leader in her field and her work around enzyme evolution. The Pinney Lab studies how enzymes work, how they got there, and how they will adapt in the future. Margaux grew up in a small town outside of Seattle; Black Diamond, WA named after the high quality coal the town used to produce. As someone "obsessed with details," she thrived in chemistry while in high school. Margaux first considered chemistry as a potential career after a teacher told her she was good at chemistry, Margaux then entered community college, leaving her senior year of high school. Taking organic chemistry and physics, she knew she would pursue science and with her community college professor Keith Clay as a major supporter, Margaux entered the University of Washington for college, working in James Mayer's lab. Where she began her research on enzymes. And coming from chemistry, to Margaux, enzymes are pretty much magical. Near the end of college, Margaux wrote an NSF proposal around directed evolution, and after getting the fellowship, she went off to graduate school at Stanford. In 2014, Margaux joined Daniel Herschlag's lab. But also did a master's in medicine, concurrently taking the first 2 years of medical school (the hardest 2 years by the way). To her, the master's program felt like an opportunity because she didn't have to pay the medical school tuition. A common theme in her career: taking full advantage of experiences. While at Stanford, she wanted to study enzymes. After a few references and a gut feeling she chose Daniel's lab. In retrospect, Margaux found the best mentors are committed, push you, and have the time. She initially worked on the RNA side. Telling a story she now uses as a proverb in her lab on doing one experiment at a time - Margaux, early-on, ran 9 gels at once, standing a foot tall and wide. Every single gel failed, and she learned to stick to one gel at a time. Margaux also learned she didn't want to work on RNA and moved to protein enzymes. She began studying the role of hydrogen bonds in enzyme function. "Enzymes have a history" and are actively evolving. Margaux wanted to figure out the rules that drive enzyme adaptation. Starting as a side project, she began studying temperature adaptation. Something Daniel said not to work on but Margaux did anyway (Daniel and Margaux now joke about this). Ketosteroid isomerase (KSI) is a model enzyme system with about 70 years of research. But with just 2 orthologs studied out of 1000s, its evolution was overlooked. By shining a light on old problems with new tools, mainly a large database of enzyme sequences generated over the last ~20 years, Margaux was able to discover a pattern of single amino acid substitutions that are stabilizing at higher temperatures. Publishing her work in Science in 2021. Throughout her journey, Margaux has learned that a high degree of commitment and flexibility are essential in science because it's both cyclical & a marathon. Around the time when the COVID-19 pandemic began, she started writing her thesis and won a fellowship at UCSF to start her own lab. She deferred to join the labs of Polly Fordyce & Gavin Sherlock as a postdoctoral fellow, learning their high-throughput methods for enzyme screening. In January 2022, Margaux got her lab off-the-ground to combine high-throughput screening and evolutionary analysis, increasing the throughput of enzymology. By bringing quantitative, high-throughput assays to enzymes, the Pinney Lab investigates enzyme function at a scale beyond traditional biochemistry. Work here is just getting started and excited to see the work Margaux & her group put out of the next few years.
Come and listen to a seasoned storyteller. Talking with Dianne was like talking to a library itself. It's appropriate considering she spent over 40 years in one..
In this episode, I walked the walk. I am always saying reach out to your coaches and mentors and tell them what they mean to you and express that gratitude. Well…it was time to walk the walk. I cold called some of my former coaches and mentors, some names you will recognize, and thanked them for everything they have done in my life. Thank you for answering your phones! I appreciate all of you and the leadership you have had in my life, and some of you in my kid's lives: My parents (Dr. Tommy Burnett and JoBelle Hopper), Dr. David Oatman, Jane Lindsey, Julie Leeth, Mark Fisher, Kent Hedgpeth (daughter's basketball coach), and John Pinney (son's boxing coach). Gratitude needs to be expressed, it brings joy to those you express it to, and it brings an inner peace and happiness to your own lives. Make the call to your former coaches and mentors. Also, thank you to my producer (pictured), Abbey Linton, you are appreciated! Listen HERE

The Not Mini Adults Podcast - “Pioneers for Children’s Healthcare and Wellbeing”
This week we are joined by Jo Pinney and Grace Welby who are both Play Specialists at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford in the UK. October 11th 2021 is the ‘Play In Hospital Week' in association with the National Association of Hospital Play Specialists and this week's guests successfully applied to launch the festivities so we are delighted that this podcast will be able to coincide with recogning the incredibly impotent role that Play Specialists have to making the lives of children and their parents that little bit more bearable whilst they are in hospital. Jo Pinney is a Senior Health Play Specialist at the Oxford Children's Hospital and has been a Health Play Specialist since 2001- even before there was a dedicated wing for the children's hospital. Jo has worked in several different areas, with her current role as a senior HPS within E.N.T and Plastics outpatients where she has been since 2012. Jo says that she ‘loves her role and find it especially rewarding when we have hooked or sucked an interesting find from a child's ear or nose'. Grace Welby is very special to Hannah and I as she was one of the pay specialists alongside Sam Mortlock. Grace has worked at Oxford Children's Hospitals for 7 years, starting as a Play Assistant on an acute ward whilst training on the job & qualifying as a Health Play Specialist 5 years ago. Grace says that “she very much enjoys her role as a Play Specialist, normalising the hospital environment for the patient & their families through play, having the time to interact & distract children from what can be a scary experience but seeing them smile is the most rewarding thing!”Follow the Oxford Play Specialists on Instagram here.Visit our shop here to purchase a copy of the Thinking of Oscar Cookbook - Made with Love or Face Coverings. He figures that everyone has barriers in life, and it's our choice if we let those challenges stop us from doing the things we love. Riding a bike led to his injury, but riding a bike also led to his greatest victory – to date. Ryan loves competing and has always wanted to be the best in the world. The bike is his passion, but it's support he's received from the people in his life that has brought him to the pinnacle of success. Let Ryan inspire you the way he inspires all who cross his path. You can't listen to our fine show if you're dead - so we don't want that! SOLVED - the mystery of the unknown cemetery has been solved. It's the Trinity Church Cemetery in the Washington Heights neighborhood of NYC. Thanks to patron Donald Mundis for helping figure that out! Yes - this episode is being released out of sequence because everyone involved loves Halloween way too much and honestly it seemed off-brand to wait when it would be so easy to just give the people what they need. So... turn out the lights, get under your blanket, and listen to Jeb, Blake and return guest Alex French talk you through the super-creepy extravaganza that is Haunted Castles! Remember - we're on the lookout for more information about this cemetery shooting location. Let us know if you find anything. Post in the comments, or send an email to Blake@monstertalk.org. (Note - we've pretty conclusively removed Los Angeles as a possibility so are focusing on San Francisco and New York for now.) The creepy ghost reminds us of a creepy villain. She is the owner and operator of Pittsburgh Transformation Center, where she works as As a Christian transformation coach. She coaches the issues of the heart not the problem. She helps to deepen your relationship with God and with others by Identifying negative beliefs and creating a pathway to communicate from the heart. Book Title: Deeper Living the Christian Life In the Deep Down Description: In her book, Lisa writes about what it’s like for Jesus to reach the wounded place of the heart to bring about emotional healing, transformation, and spiritual growth. You’ll learn what emotional needs are. You’ll learn how important it is to have your emotional needs met in Christ and in relationships. You’ll see how unmet needs lead to self-medicating, self-protecting, and self-sabotaging behaviors. Lisa mixes her own personal journey of emotional healing so the reader can relate, and identify their own need for emotional healing. The book has contemplations or visual prayer exercises at the end of each chapter, however, this is not a how to book. "We pretty much accept everything except for baseball cards and stamps." Ms. Pinney discusses how the auction house operates, noting the top three categories it's known for nationally and internationally: American Indian Art, historic firearm and military items and American historical items (antique photographs, Civil War artifacts). The 20-year-old company will conduct roughly 70 auctions in 2019. The company's founder, Wes Cowan, is a frequent guest on the popular TV show, Antiques Roadshow. He has a large following. Ms. Pinney has many great stories surrounding the acquisition of certain items. The value of any piece lies, essentially, in each one's provenance, or its place of origin and ownership history. The price range extends as low as a few hundred dollars and scales as high as $1 million, and the average item sells for $1,000 - $5,000.
