Marathon Development Moves Forward

Five takeaways on plans and public response The development of the last substantial piece of real estate in Cold Spring took a significant step forward in public sessions held April 27 to 30 at the Chapel Restoration and the St. Mary's Church rectory. The urban planning firm Speck-Dempsey presented initial concept plans for a mixed-use development on the Kemble Avenue parcel, while residents voiced concerns and shared ideas regarding the 12-acre tract. There were standing-room-only crowds at each of the two charrettes that included presentations; the other two were open houses. The Marathon Battery factory operated on the site from 1952 to 1979, discharging cadmium and other toxins into the soil and the adjacent Foundry Cove and the Hudson River. The Environmental Protection Agency ordered that the cove be dredged in 1972 and, in 1987, began a nine-year cleanup of the property that included demolition of the factory. (For a detailed history, see highlandscurrent.org/marathon.) Kearney Realty Group purchased the property in 2003. In 2023, Cold Spring amended the zoning from light industrial to planned mixed-use. Residents want smaller homes Informal votes among the residents who attended the charrette at St Mary's included a few unrealistic suggestions, such as "nothing" and "a parking lot," but housing received the most attention. Residents advocated for reasonable rents, 12 homes, tiny houses, 55-plus housing, a ban on short-term rentals and a shared, central green space ("cottage courts"). The architecture will echo Cold Spring's historic buildings in style and scale, according to Speck-Dempsey. Sustainability also scored well, with requests for low light pollution, solar power, energy-efficient buildings, trees, green space and preservation of the forest buffer. Community-oriented ideas included an aquatic center, ballfield, skate park, pavilion, safe walking and community-oriented retail. Some people wanted to see a bodega or restaurants that serve Thai and Indian food. The site is larger than it looks Speck-Dempsey drafted 12 concept plans and recommended two, which it dubbed The Amble and The Angle. Each contains 100 to 150 units, which raised some concern. Office uses, live-work spaces, upstairs apartments, small apartment villas and a few medium-size houses were also part of the mix. Restaurants or cafes could be added, but would require a zoning change. To illustrate capacity, Jeff Speck of Speck-Dempsey said two Forge Gate condominium complexes, or 136 units, could fit on the Marathon site with substantial open space. Public spaces would include a playground, the protection and enhancement of the wooded bluff at the south end, paths and viewing areas. Speck stressed the proposed neighborhood's "walkability" and noted that traffic calming devices, such as narrow lanes, are incorporated in the plans. The site is safe, says EPA While some residents have lingering concerns about the polluted past, Chris Dempsey of Speck-Dempsey said the EPA determined that the site was safe for development more than a decade ago. Excavation for construction "won't get close" to the 15-foot limit set by the EPA, environmental monitoring will be carried out throughout construction, and all plans require approval by the EPA and state regulators. Dempsey said the village has indicated it has the capacity to handle water and sewer for the development, although he reserved the right to reassess once detailed plans are ready. Because the site's groundwater is contaminated, the units cannot use wells for drinking water. Traffic flow seems tight Speck-Dempsey say that, even within the narrow confines of Rock Street, Kemble Avenue and Wall Street, traffic will not be a problem, including safe pickup and drop-off at the adjacent Montessori school. It plans to commission a traffic study and will look at access from Lunn Terrace or by connecting Kemble with Chestnut Street, although those options seem unlikely. Hanna is a 2025 School Counselor of the Year® finalist, Therapy Dog mom, and Tech/AI enthusiast. I met Hanna through her mom, Jerri Kemble, when they were presenting with firefly wings. Then I had a one-to-one conversation with Hanna, and that was it… she had to be a guest on my show. Your WHY and What Brings You Joy My “why” is building schools where students are truly seen, where creativity is valued, and where opportunity is not reserved for a lucky few. I root for the underdog, the underserved, and students in rural communities who deserve the same expansive possibilities as anyone else. What brings me joy is connection, continuous learning, dogs, polka dots, and the everyday magic of my students growing into who they are meant to be. Your Background (what it was like in school, growing up, what you always wanted to be) I grew up in a rural community with a big heart, where everyone knew each other and helping others was simply part of everyday life. My parents, Kurt and Jerri Kemble, modeled what it meant to show up for others, and that spirit carried through our town. All of my grandparents lived nearby, so my childhood was filled with time around their kitchen tables, lending a hand to neighbors, and taking part in community service. When I was little, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian because of my love for animals. I loved school and felt connected there until my senior year, when my mom became superintendent, and I transferred to the district where she worked. Suddenly, I felt out of place. In true teenage fashion, I joined the track team and filmed basketball games, volunteering for anything that would get me out of the building. Even then, I was learning how much belonging and environment shape a person's experience. I am fortunate to have a loving family and live in Lawrence, Kansas, with my husband, Dalton, two dogs, and a cat. Becoming a School Counselor: Describe what it meant to you when you figured out your calling. I graduated from college with a degree in advertising and began a career I genuinely enjoyed. I loved my job and deeply respected my boss, but something within me kept whispering that the work was not fulfilling my soul. I knew I wanted to make a different impact, so I decided to return to school to become a counselor. My boss met that decision with incredible kindness, allowing me to continue working while attending graduate school full-time, a generosity I have never forgotten. When I first contacted the counseling program, the response felt uncertain and discouraging. There were questions about whether this path was truly right for me and how a background in marketing and advertising fit into the counseling world. While I understand their perspective now, at the time, it planted seeds of imposter syndrome and left me wondering if I truly belonged. Yet, as the program continued, so did my clarity of purpose. I discovered that the skills I brought with me, including communication, creativity, understanding people, and connecting messages to meaning, were not detours but strengths. Looking back, I would not change the path at all. It shaped my resilience, deepened my empathy, and affirmed that this calling was exactly where I was meant to be. Junior Coaches Program Junior Coaches began as a restorative program designed to support students who struggle with peer conflict and behavior by building problem-solving skills and confidence. The group included older students who practiced these skills together and then took them to recess, where they supported younger students in navigating conflicts and challenges. This felt more comfortable and natural for them than stepping into that role with their own classmates, and it gave them a meaningful way to lead. Paws and Claws grew alongside it as a project-based learning group where students design, create, and donate pet products to a local animal shelter. I love both of these groups because they move beyond simply talking about skills and instead create depth through authentic skill-building. Students are not just learning what to do. They are practicing empathy, responsibility, collaboration, and problem-solving in real and meaningful ways. School Counselor of the Year 2025 Finalist Being named a 2025 School Counselor of the Year Finalist has been a wild and humbling ride. I still catch myself looking at photos from Capitol Hill and thinking, Did that really happen? It has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. https://videos.schoolcounselor.org/hanna-kemble-mick For a moment, you feel fully seen, valued, and celebrated as an educator and as a school counselor, and I find myself wishing every person in education could experience that kind of affirmation. The connections, friendships, and shared purpose have been next level. This truly feels like the gift of a lifetime. Through this experience, I have built lasting relationships with educators across the country and have had the opportunity to share my message about elevating school counseling and keeping it future-focused through keynotes and presentations in districts and conferences nationwide. I am deeply grateful to ASCA for opening doors I never imagined, and for creating an experience I wish every school counselor could have. Firefly Effect Presentations and more I have had the meaningful opportunity to present alongside my mom through the Firefly Effect and the Life Hack Lab for Women Who Lead. These experiences focus less on quick fixes and more on intentional navigation, introspection, and reflection. Together, we invite participants to pause, examine their paths, and reconnect with their purpose while building the courage to lead with authenticity and resilience. Sharing this work with my mom has made it even more special, blending a personal story with professional insight in a way that resonates deeply with the women we serve. AI Integration and what that means for Educators and School Counselors When I present on AI integration for educators and school counselors, I emphasize intentional use and meaningful impact. Rather than using technology for its own sake, I encourage professionals to ask why they are using it and how it supports students and strengthens their work. We explore how AI can expand access to support, streamline tasks, and open new pathways for learning, while remaining grounded in ethical, safe, and student-centered practices. At the same time, I stress as technology becomes more present in our lives, human skills become even more essential. Skills, like empathy, communication, critical thinking, self-awareness, creativity, and ethical decision-making, empower students to use technology. wisely and to thrive in a rapidly changing world. The goal is not to replace the human element, but to amplify it, empowering counselors and educators to extend their reach, deepen relationships, and better support the growth and well-being of the students they serve. 250 Years Ago (February 1776) Maj. Gen. Charles Lee and a contingent of the Continental Army arrived in New York City from Boston to defend the city against British attack. Col. William Alexander, with 1,000 men, came from New Jersey to serve under Lee. Andrew Allen and Thomas Lynch, delegates from the Continental Congress, met in New York City with Lord Drummond, representing the king, to see if some "accommodation" could be reached. Gen. George Washington wrote to the Committee of Safety of New York, asking it to send any weapons it could spare to his camp outside Boston. Eager to join the fight against the British, the carpenters building military frigates in New York City left their posts to volunteer. Congress reassured them that the boats were equally important to the cause. James Duane, a delegate from New York, noted that Congress was debating the Continental Army's pay, enlistment lengths and whether one colony could use another colony's troops for defense. 150 Years Ago (February 1876) James Nelson of the South Highlands, who had an impressive numismatic collection, showed off a bronze medallion he had acquired that depicted Gouverneur Kemble (1786-1875), a co-founder of the West Point Foundry. It was dated 1837, when Kemble was seated for the first of two terms in Congress. The medal was 3 inches wide with a relief of Kemble in profile; the reverse had his name and birthdate. Benjamin Ireland, who suspected his nephews, Jake and Al Ireland, and a neighbor named Williams had stolen a "skip" of honey he valued at $50 [about $1,500 today], persuaded the constable to obtain a search warrant. No trace of the stolen sweets was found, but one nephew was angry enough at the intrusion that he assaulted Ben near Patterson's store in Mollyville [Nelsonville]. Ben then obtained a "peace" warrant that demanded the constable jail the nephew to keep the peace. A gust of wind blew down C. Manning's chimney, which damaged his roof. Granville Roberts had left his 3-year-old grandson, Willie, in the kitchen for a few minutes to go upstairs when the boy began to cry and climb the steps. Roberts hurried down and found the tablecloth on fire. Asa Truesdell, who had run his meat market for 30 years, died at his Fair Street home at age 73. He had advertised the market for sale, saying it was the oldest business in Cold Spring and generated $30,000 [$900,000] in annual sales. Elias Post sued Ichabod Hunt for cutting wood on his land. After hearing testimony for nearly the entire day, a jury awarded him $4 [$121] in damages. A son of Mr. Hayden of Garrison was brought to Cold Spring on a railroad handcar after he accidentally cut off some of his toes with an ax. James Schegel asked Officer Delaney on a weekend to detain Isaac Levy and his son for assaulting him with a club and threatening him with a revolver. Delaney suggested he wait until Monday to obtain an arrest warrant, but by then, Schegel had decided not to press charges. Mrs. Freley was hanging clothes on a line at West Point when the wind swept her off her feet and down a slope, where she fractured her skull on a rock. About 30 ferry passengers were stuck at Garrison for half a day because the river was choked with floating ice. 1st Lt. Robert Warren, 29, a Cold Spring native, died at Camp Douglas in the Utah territory of apoplexy [stroke]. He had joined the Union Army in 1862 and fought during several major battles in Virginia. The Cold Spring Recorder shared the story of a 7-year-old named Dusty who was running with friends on the cakes of ice in the river when he fell in. Rather than return home wet and face punishment, he removed his clothes, put them on a pile of bricks and waited, naked, until they dried. A high tide overflowed onto the lower end of Main Street, leaving behind blocks of ice that froze fast to the ground. The water pump at the corner of Parsonage and Bank streets was out of order. Jerri is a former superintendent and was a principal in multiple school districts. Jerri's passion for pushing boundaries shines through her work as the National Academic Advisor for ClassLink and co-host of the LinkedUp: Breaking Boundaries in Education podcast.  Your WHY I believe in lighting the spark that helps others shine. My “WHY” is rooted in a lifelong commitment to making a meaningful difference in the world by empowering people to lead with heart, think boldly, and grow into the best versions of themselves. Whether I'm supporting educators, mentoring women in leadership, or creating spaces for creative reflection and innovation, I strive to leave a trail of impact that inspires others to pay it forward. For me, it's not just about changing systems, it's about touching lives Your Background  I grew up in a small town and have been happily married to my high school sweetheart, Kurt, for 42 years. We have two amazing kids who I like to say are both in the mental health business—our daughter, Hanna, is a dedicated school counselor (School Counselor of the Year 2025), and our son, Max, brews great beer (which supports adult wellness!). We're lucky to all live in Lawrence, Kansas, where we can spend lots of quality time together. Family means the world to me, and I love that we laugh, support one another, and enjoy life side by side. Teacher and Kansas School Counselor I didn't love school growing up, especially middle and high school. It often felt disconnected and uninspiring. That early experience shaped my purpose: I wanted to make school a place where kids felt seen, engaged, and excited to learn. I spent 13 years in the classroom doing just that. But over time, I realized many students were struggling with personal challenges, and I wasn't equipped to help them navigate. So, I returned to school to earn my counseling degree, never intending to leave the classroom. But that decision led me down a new path. I became a school counselor and was later honored as the Kansas School Counselor of the Year. From there, my career expanded into leadership roles, serving as a principal, superintendent, and assistant superintendent. In 2010, I also pioneered the Kansas Online Learning Program, helping to shape the future of education in our state Tech-Savvy Superintendent From 2007 to 2020, I served as either a superintendent or assistant superintendent, leading during a time when technology was transforming education. I was deeply committed to ensuring that our teachers were equipped with the tools and training they needed to integrate technology meaningfully, and that every student, regardless of background, had access to devices and opportunities. I often said that when you put a computer in the hands of a child, it makes your poorest student rich. My work during this time focused on accessibility, digital citizenship, and future-ready learning. I wanted our students to be prepared, not just for tests, but for life. That meant giving them the digital fluency to thrive in a rapidly changing world.  I was honored in 2010 by ESchools News and was named one of the 10  Tech Savvy Superintendents in the United States. This was quite an honor for a superintendent in a rural Kansas community.   National Advisor at ClassLink and Co-host on the Breaking Boundaries in Education Podcast As the National Academic Advisor for ClassLink and co-host of the LinkedUp: Breaking Boundaries in Education podcast with Jamie Saponara, I continue to impact the educational landscape. My passion for pushing boundaries and fostering meaningful change shines through in all my endeavors. Firefly Effect and Rock Star Presenter  Two of my signature presentations—The Firefly Effect and Unleash Your Inner Rock Star—are deeply personal and powerfully purposeful. The Firefly Effect is about recognizing the light in ourselves and others. It's a call to lead with authenticity, purpose, and presence, inspiring leaders to shine in unique ways, while sparking light in those around them. Hanna and I enjoy presenting this session together, especially with these wings. Here's one with Michael Wesely (Episode #172) Unleash Your Inner Rock Star taps into the energy, confidence, and voice that so many women have but often are silent. It's designed to remind people, especially women in leadership, that they already have what it takes to step into the spotlight of their lives and careers. Here I am with an AI-generated version of me and my co-Rock Stars, Barbara (host of the Rethinking Learning Podcast)  and Erika Sandstrom (Green Screen Gal), rocking out during our presentation. I'm passionate about these sessions because they blend storytelling, interactive reflection, and empowering strategies in a way that's fun, relatable, and transformational. Watching people light up, realizing they are already enough, already powerful and impactful, is why I do what I do. Your Passion and Travels My passion for education has taken me far beyond the classroom and the boardroom—to Shanghai, China, and Kenya, Africa. In Shanghai, I worked with students and educators on innovation in teaching and learning.  While in Kenya, I had the profound honor of engaging with women leaders, students, and teachers in deeply meaningful ways.  These global experiences reminded me that while our cultures and contexts may differ, the heartbeat of education is universal: connection, opportunity, and hope. I believe global education is not just about geography—it's about perspective, empathy, and preparing students to be thoughtful, compassionate citizens of the world. These journeys fueled my belief that when we invest in women and empower educators, we unlock change that ripples across generations Awards You Received  I have been honored with several prestigious awards throughout my career, recognizing my seasoned leadership and impact. These accolades include Kansas School Counselor of the Year, eSchool News Tech-Savvy Superintendent, Kansas State University's Educational Administration Student of the Year, and Technology Leader of the Year by Tech and Learning Magazine. I have been invited to the White House three times, where I shared my knowledge and insights with then-Vice President Joe Biden's top aides on virtual education. Additionally, I was privileged to attend President Obama's unveiling of the Future Ready Initiative for Schools. EdTech and Design Thinking  I believe deeply in the power of design thinking and project-based learning because they mirror the way the real world works—messy, creative, collaborative, and purpose-driven. These approaches challenge students to think critically, solve authentic problems, and build empathy as they design solutions that matter. In a world where innovation and adaptability are essential, we can't afford to keep teaching in ways that prioritize memorization over meaning. Design thinking empowers students to see themselves as changemakers. Project-based learning gives them a reason to care. Together, they cultivate future-ready skills—like resilience, teamwork, and curiosity—that our world desperately needs. If we want a better future, we need to start by changing the way we prepare our learners today. Empowering Women as Leaders Empowering women is at the heart of everything I do. Through keynote presentations like The Firefly Effect and Unleash Your Inner Rockstar, I create spaces for women to rediscover their confidence, share their stories, and lead with authenticity and purpose.  I also co-host the LinkedUp Podcast, where we amplify the voices of bold, innovative women in leadership, tech, and education. One of my favorite traditions is hosting the Women's Tea—an intentional gathering designed for connection, reflection, and celebration among women leaders.  Another highlight of the year is our Women in Technology Retreat held annually in San Diego. It's an unforgettable experience that brings together women from across the country to learn, recharge, and grow together in a powerful community. Whether it's through sketchnotes, interactive vision boards, or hands-on workshops, my goal is always the same: to remind women of their brilliance, build a sisterhood of support, and make sure no woman has to rise alone. Why does Fashion Make a Difference?  I believe fashion is far more than fabric; it's a form of communication, confidence, and creativity. What we wear can empower us, lift our energy, and help us show up more fully in the spaces we occupy. I often say, “What you wear speaks before you say anything.” It's true—your outfit tells a story about who you are, how you feel, and how you want to be seen. For me, fashion is a joyful form of self-expression. Whether on stage presenting, recording a podcast, or connecting with leaders, I choose outfits that reflect boldness, positivity, and personality. I believe when women feel great in what they wear, they're more likely to speak up, stand tall, and own their brilliance. The Badass Firefly Effect I just published The Badass Firefly Effect. This project is close to my heart, which blends leadership lessons, personal stories, and creative inspiration to help women lead with confidence and courage. Here's Barbara's review so you have an idea what's in my book. “In The Badass Firefly Effect, Jerri Kemble invites readers on a powerful journey of self-discovery, courage, and purpose. Through personal stories and leadership lessons, she shows how embracing your inner light—your SHINE—can inspire others to do the same. This empowering guide speaks, especially to women, ready to lead with authenticity, confidence, and creative fire. Kemble's words, inspirational quotes, and brilliant sketchnotes remind us that impact matters more than applause, and that our unique spark is our superpower. Both inspiring and practical, The Badass Firefly Effect is a luminous call to action for every woman ready to be the glow, the grit, and the firefly.” What's next for you? I also just illustrated a children's book that's now officially published and expected to be released before Christmas—an exciting milestone!  Beyond that, I'm diving into new art projects, designing creative leadership tools for ClassLink, and continuing my journey of learning and research on women in leadership. At the core of it all, my mission is simple: to shine—and to shine brightly enough that others feel safe and inspired to find their light.  Jerri Kemble's Contact Info LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jerri-kemble-58307b28/  X: @techsavvysupt Bluesky: @techsavvysupt.bsky.social Email: jjkemble@gmail.com  ***** Thank you, Jerri Kemble, for joining me on my virtual porch.  I'm fortunate to know Jerri, to have been on her podcast, and to present with her and Erika Sandstrom in our “Unveil Your Inner Rock Star” sessions  Jerri is that Firefly who brings light to everyone so all of us shine.  I hope you enjoyed our conversation. For the casual skywatcher, Camelopardalis, the giraffe, is a dud. Only a few of its stars are visible to the unaided eye, and you need dark skies to see even those. With binoculars, though, you can pick out some nice sights within the giraffe’s borders. One example is Kemble’s Cascade – a string of about 20 stars along the giraffe’s neck. The stars aren’t related – they just happen to line up in the same direction. Near one end of the cascade, though, is a group of several dozen stars that are related: the star cluster NGC 1502. It’s high above Polaris, the North Star, in mid evening. The cluster is a few thousand light-years away, but the exact distance is uncertain. The cluster’s age is uncertain, too, although it’s probably only a few million years. One clue to its age is the types of stars it contains. Many of the stars of NGC 1502 are much bigger, brighter, and hotter than the Sun. Such stars live no more than a few tens of millions of years, compared to billions of years for stars like the Sun. Since quite a few of these stars are still around, the cluster can’t be very old. The brightest member of the cluster is called SZ Cam. It’s a family of six stars, split into three tight pairs. Two of the pairs huddle close together, while the third is much farther out. SZ Cam helps make the cluster worth looking for, in a constellation that’s a little short of skywatching wonders. Contested Spaces: A Critical History of Canadian Public Libraries As Neutral Places, 1960-2020 (Library Juice Press, 2024) is the first comprehensive and critical history of controversial events at Canadian public libraries, and an examination of the real-world impacts of neutrality policies in Canadian public library space use. What events at public libraries in Canada have created controversies and prompted protests? What were the issues at stake? What kinds of outcry or protest occurred? Did politicians get involved? Did the events happen, or did they get cancelled, and why? What kinds of impacts or outcomes resulted? This book answers these questions and brings the Canadian historical context into the ongoing conversations that are critiquing the concept of neutrality in libraries. It considers relevant librarian perspectives alongside critical theories to interrogate the myth of library neutrality, and to seek positive and productive ways for libraries to engage with and serve their communities that honour library values and foster inclusivity, care, safety, and social justice. Zak Kemble and Gavin Linde, both whiskey enthusiasts, recently discussed their shared passion. Zak recounted his initial negative experience with whiskey and his subsequent journey exploring different varieties. Both agreed on Glenfarclas 15 as a favorite, appreciating its balance of accessibility and flavor, while Gavin also highlighted Glenfiddich for its consistent quality and affordability. Their conversation touched on the unpredictable nature of aging whiskey and the risks involved, drawing parallels with the evolving video game and car industries. Zak, who delved into whiskey around 2015 after retiring from semi-professional athletics, entered the scene just before its surge in popularity. They acknowledged the challenges faced by the whiskey industry, particularly the impact of Covid-19, which led to initial growth followed by a downturn. Zak emphasized the issue of rising prices potentially alienating consumers, stressing the need for a balanced value proposition across different consumer segments. Gavin suggested the shift towards tequilas and rums could be a response to these challenges. The rising prices in the whiskey market, despite no apparent cost increases, were also discussed. They explored the practice of 'whiskey fixing,' where whiskeys are further aged to modify flavor profiles and create limited editions. Gavin shared his experience collecting rare, expensive bottles as potential investments. The investment potential of Scotch whiskey was a key topic, with its rapid growth surpassing other investments like real estate and premium wines. They also touched on limited production and the practice of 'flipping' whiskey for resale rather than consumption. The increasing prices of whiskey, particularly the McAllen edition, were analyzed. Gavin recounted buying the McAllen edition for $89-$95 and witnessing its value soar to $3,000 before dropping to $1,200. Zak highlighted the disparity between the rate of price increases and consumer affordability, particularly when collecting overshadows consumption. The challenges of serving high-end whiskey in bars were also explored, focusing on oxidation and the difficulty of maintaining optimal storage conditions. They emphasized the importance of proper handling to preserve quality and the challenges faced by bartenders in ensuring this. Zak and Gavin shared career highlights, with Zak recounting his visit to the Blair Athol distillery in Scotland, emphasizing its historical significance. They also discussed their whiskey tasting experiences, including a 52-year-old Macallan from 1969 for Zak and a 71-year-old Glenlivet for Gavin, both exceeding expectations despite preconceptions about older whiskeys. The conversation concluded with reflections on the subjective nature of whiskey preferences, the importance of quality control, and the joy of sharing high-quality whiskey with others. They criticized brands prioritizing reputation over quality and emphasized the value of shared experiences over material possessions.

At approximately 7:37 a.m., police received reports of an active scene at Perry High School in Perry. Officers responded within seven minutes of the active shooter alarm, Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante told reporters. The total number of victims and their status have not been confirmed. Infante said authorities are working to determine that information and that there is no further danger to the public. "The community is safe," the sheriff said. "We're just now working backwards, trying to figure out everything that happened and make notifications. There will be another update later on today." The Associated Press reported two gunshot victims were taken by ambulance to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in the state capital of Des Moines. A law enforcement source told the AP the suspect in the shooting has died of what investigators believe is a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Infante said the shooting happened before school began. "Luckily, there was very few students and faculty in the building, which I think contributed to a good outcome in that sense," he said. Zander Shelley, 15, was in a hallway waiting for the school day to start when he heard gunshots and dashed into a classroom, his father, Kevin Shelley, told the AP. Zander was grazed twice and hid in the classroom before texting his father at 7:36 a.m. Kevin Shelley, who drives a garbage truck, told his boss he had to run. "It was the most scared I’ve been in my entire life," he said. Rachael Kares, an 18-year-old senior, told the AP she was at jazz band practice when students heard what sounded like four gunshots, spaced apart. "We all just jumped," Kares said. "My band teacher looked at us and yelled, ‘Run!’ So we ran." Kares said students and faculty ran out past the football field, with people yelling, "Get out! Get out!" as they ran. She said she heard additional shots while she fled, but was most concerned about getting home to her 3-year-old son. "At that moment I didn’t care about anything except getting out because I had to get home with my son," she told the AP. The sheriff's office, Perry Police Department and multiple federal agencies also responded to the shooting. Authorities have identified a suspect but have not released their name at this time, the sheriff said. Multiple EMS vehicles were sent to the scene at 1200 18th Street, according to public safety radio traffic. Federal agents from the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also said they were on the ground. Perry High School belongs to the Perry Community School District, about 25 miles northwest of Des Moines. About 1,785 students are enrolled in the school district, according to its website. Thursday was the first day of school after the winter break, according to the school's calendar. "Our hearts are broken by this senseless tragedy. Our prayers are with the students, teachers & families of the Perry Community," Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said in a statement. "I have been in contact with law enforcement agencies & am continuing to monitor the situation. I will be joining their press conference today." https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/federal-judge-dismisses-trump-ballot-disqualification-case-with-prejudice-5558227?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport Federal Judge Dismisses Trump Ballot Disqualification Case ‘With Prejudice’ A federal judge in California on Jan. 3 dismissed a lawsuit that sought to keep former President Donald Trump off the 2024 Republican primary ballot in that state. District Judge David Carter granted a motion to dismiss the lawsuit “with prejudice,” which means that it can’t be submitted to the same court again, according to court papers. A plaintiff attempted to argue that they suffered “emotional injury” as a result of the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, while watching the events unfold on television, on the radio, and in various publications. They then argued that the incident caused them “severe emotional distress” and then filed a lawsuit to keep the former president off California’s ballot. However, the judge wrote that because the events occurred “more than two years before the plaintiff” filed suit, it was outside of the two-year statute of limitations. The decision by Judge Carter, a Clinton-appointed jurist who has ruled against President Trump in a separate case, was posted online by former Republican National Committee for California Chair Harmeet Dhillon. “The remnants of the last California case to keep President Trump off the ballot here were dismissed today by Judge David O. Carter!!” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Jan. 3. In recent days and weeks, a number of lawsuits have been filed in different states seeking to bar President Trump from appearing on the ballot ahead of the 2024 election. Those suits have claimed that the former president engaged in “insurrection or rebellion” against the United States under an interpretation of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment’s Section 3, which was written in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. Civil War. At least two of those challenges have seen some success in Maine and Colorado, although there has been widespread speculation that higher courts or even the U.S. Supreme Court will strike those rulings down. Days before Christmas, Colorado’s highest court ruled to keep the former president off the primary ballot in the state, which was promptly appealed to the Supreme Court. Last week, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, a Democrat, unilaterally decided to keep President Trump off the ballot, which also has been appealed. Ahead of the Supreme Court appeal, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said that “unsurprisingly, the all-Democrat-appointed Colorado Supreme Court has ruled against President Trump, supporting a Soros-funded, left-wing group’s scheme to interfere in an election on behalf of Crooked Joe Biden by removing President Trump’s name from the ballot and eliminating the rights of Colorado voters to vote for the candidate of their choice.” Legal analysts have suggested that the U.S. Supreme Court would take up those two cases and likely would rule against the plaintiffs at least on procedural grounds. However, it isn’t clear whether the court will take up the more thorny questions presented under the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause. “It seems a certainty that SCOTUS will have to address the merits sooner or later,” Rick Hasen, a law professor at the University of California–Los Angeles, wrote on his website last month, referring to the Supreme Court. Several other federal judges have also dismissed attempts to block the former president from appearing on ballots. In a ruling issued in late December 2023, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema wrote that the plaintiffs—two activists—who filed suit against President Trump in Virginia to keep him on that state’s ballot lacked standing. https://hotair.com/jazz-shaw/2024/01/03/trans-murderer-sent-to-womens-prison-n602445 Trans Murderer Sent to Women's Prison In 2012 and 2013, a man named Steven Buchanan murdered two handymen he had hired to do some labor around his farm in Oregon. After killing them, he fed their corpses to his pigs. He was eventually discovered and arrested for the crimes. In 2015 he was convicted, with the judge telling him that he was “a cold-blooded killer” who “valued pigs more than you value human life.” Buchanan was sentenced to fifty years in prison. But then things reportedly took a turn for the strange. The killer was no longer Steven Buchanan. Instead, he was “Susan Monica,” claiming to be a transgender woman. As our colleague Madeline Lessman reports this week at Townhall, Monica nee Buchanan is now being housed at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, a women’s prison located in Wilsonville, Oregon. A “transgender” biological male who was convicted of murdering two men is serving a 50-year sentence in a women’s prison, according to a report from Reduxx. The prisoner, Steven Buchanan, who goes by “Susan Monica,” dismembered the bodies of his victims and fed them to pigs on a 20-acre farm he owned in Oregon, Reduxx noted. Buchanan bought the farm in 1991 and killed two handymen in 2012 and 2013. In 2015, he was reportedly sentenced to a minimum of 50 years behind bars. “You shot two people and fed them to your pigs,” Judge Tim Barnack told Buchanan during sentencing. “I don’t know how else I can put it. You valued pigs more than you value people. It may sound harsh, but you are a cold-blooded killer.” By this time, we’ve covered enough of these transgender prisoner stories that you should have already noticed a pattern emerging. There are men behaving badly who never seemed to have any problem living as men. Then, why they are facing the possibility of a long stretch in the Crowbar Motel, they suddenly “realize” that they are actually women trapped in men’s bodies and they demand special accommodations. And if they live in a blue state on the West Coast, those demands are almost always met. If the details of those two killings don’t do enough to send chills down your spine and make you realize how dangerous this guy almost certainly is (even at the age of 75), there is more. During court proceedings, the lead detective in the case told the judge that Buchanan had said he was worried that if police found “the other seventeen” bodies on his farm, he might never get out of jail. Police searched and did some digging, but additional bodies were not located. That doesn’t mean they’re not there, though. This guy is a certifiable lunatic who told the police “I do not value human life very much.” This is the sort of person we’re putting in a women’s prison? I’m sure some of the actual females at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility did some bad things to wind up there, though hopefully not involving feeding body parts to swine. But do they deserve to be exposed to a proven homicidal maniac who is pretending to be a woman? Townhall has been covering stories like this for a while and it never seems to end well. One trans inmate in New Jersey wound up impregnating two female inmates. (His own mother said that the trans thing was a scam allowing him access to women.) Another inmate was sexually assaulted by a trans inmate.. https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2024/01/03/sweden-records-coldest-january-evening-in-25-years/ Sweden Records Coldest January Evening in 25 Years Europe experienced stark weather contrasts on Wednesday, with extreme cold and snowstorms disrupting transportation and closing schools in Scandinavia while strong winds and heavy rain in western Europe caused flooding and at least one death. Temperatures fell below minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit) in the Nordic region for a second day in a row Wednesday. In Kvikkjokk-Årrenjarka in Swedish Lapland, the mercury dropped to minus 43.6 C (minus 46.5 F), the lowest January temperature recorded in Sweden in 25 years, Sweden’s TT news agency reported. Extremely cold temperatures, snow and gale-force winds disrupted transportation throughout the Nordic region, with several bridges closed and some train and ferry services suspended. Several schools in Scandinavia were closed. Police across most of Denmark urged motorists to avoid unnecessary trips as wind and snow battered the northern and western parts of the country. Mild but wet and windy conditions prevailed further south, where a storm wreaked havoc in parts of western Europe. In Britain, a driver died after a tree fell on his car in western England. Gloucestershire Police said the man died in the incident near the town of Kemble on Tuesday afternoon. The storm, which has been named Henk by the official weather services of Britain, Ireland and the Netherlands, has caused power cuts, transport troubles, property damage and disruption across the U.K. More than 300 flood warnings were in place across England and Wales on Wednesday, while 10,000 homes remained without power. A severe flood alert, meaning a danger to life, was announced for the River Nene in Northampton in central England. Several residents were evacuated from houseboats and caravans at the nearby Billing Aquadrome. The U.K.’s rail network was hit by flooding and power cuts, with many operators reporting ongoing issues for the Wednesday morning commute into work. The strongest gales in the U.K. were recorded on the Isle of Wight, just off the coast in southern England, where wind speeds reached 94 miles per hour (151 kilometers per hour). In the Netherlands, police near the city of Eindhoven said strong winds may have played a role in the death of a 75-year-old man who fell off his bicycle late Tuesday as high winds lashed much of the country. Parts of Germany were also grappling with flooding, which could be aggravated by more rain falling in the worst-affected northwestern state of Lower Saxony. https://www.boundingintosports.com/2024/01/aaron-rodgers-says-jimmy-kimmel-is-worried-about-the-jeffrey-epstein-files-suggests-nfl-is-rigged/ Aaron Rodgers Says Jimmy Kimmel Is Worried About The Jeffrey Epstein Files, Suggests NFL Is Rigged If you thought New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers had any designs on pulling back on his opinions in the new year, think again. During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, the 40-year-old future NFL Hall of Famer suggested late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel might be nervous about the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Oh, and he also floated the idea that the NFL is rigged. Aaron Rodgers kicked off a segment with the host by embracing a conspiracy theory that the Super Bowl logo features the colors of the teams that eventually end up playing in the game. An X post by NFL Memes in September included an image that explained the theory and showed recent examples. The group also predicted that based on this theory, the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers would be facing each other in Super Bowl LVIII. “If the Super Bowl Baltimore and San Fran, I’ll tell you what, that Super Bowl 59 emblem better have Jet green on it,” Rodgers said. “I know you’ve seen that one … that’s a real interesting one,” Rodgers said of the conspiracy theory. https://twitter.com/i/status/1742256969883492467 - Play Video

If you look long enough and hard enough, you're bound to find an interesting pattern of stars in the night sky. Stargazers have logged all kinds of circles, rectangles, and many other patterns. One of those is known as Kemble's Cascade. It's a lineup of about 20 stars. They're not actually related to each other — they just happen to line up that way in the sky. There's a big variation in the brightness of the stars. But the whole string is visible with good binoculars on a dark, moonless night. Such a pattern is known as an asterism. It's not a constellation, but it is a group of stars that form a pattern. The most famous asterism is the Big Dipper — the body and tail of Ursa Major, the great bear. Kemble's Cascade was discovered in 1980, by Father Lucien Kemble, a Franciscan friar and a well-known amateur astronomer in his homeland of Canada. He found the array of stars using a pair of binoculars. He then sent a letter to a columnist at Sky & Telescope magazine, describing the alignment as “a beautiful cascade of faint stars.” One end of it stops near the faint star cluster NGC 1502. The writer published a story about it, and named it Kemble's Cascade in the friar's honor. Kemble's Cascade is in Camelopardalis, the giraffe. The faint constellation is fairly low in the northeast at nightfall. Kemble's Cascade is arrayed beneath a triangle of faint stars that outlines the giraffe's body.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

In the United States most of us receive our daily necessities of food, water, energy, shelter and sanitation from the 'grid', a complex system of production and distribution. This grid is a historically unprecedented economic system that is characterized by specialization, centralization, complication, and communication. It is incredible in its ability to create and supply a wide range of services and products. However, it also creates a society of consumers who don't need many practical skills or relationships with local people. Many of us would likely die if the fragility of the 'grid' resulted in its total or partial collapse if the conditions of peace and stability it relies on disappears. But even if it doesn't collapse, the benefits of decreasing dependency on that grid can help us create families and communities that experience greater freedom and health. In this podcast episode I talk with Kemble Hildreth of Acorn Land Labs about practical thoughts and simple solutions for decreasing our dependency on unhealthy, vulnerable industrial systems. "Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,“Come out of her, my people,    lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues."Revelation 18:4 ESVLinks:https://shop.liveoakcs.com/pages/acorn-land-labTo support the Show go to www.redeemingthedirt.com/supportSupport the show

You may not have heard of Sarah Siddons, but if you've seen a production of Macbeth recently, you may have experienced her influence. In the late 18th century, Siddons became one of the first celebrity actors, for her performances in roles including Queen Katherine in Henry VIII, Constance in King John, Volumnia in Coriolanus, and, of course, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. Her brother and frequent co-star John Philip Kemble became the first stage “director” in our sense of the word, even though there was no such title in the 18th-century theater. Both of their careers benefited from Shakespeare's rising critical and popular reputation in the 18th century. Barbara Bogaev talks to scholar Fiona Ritchie, whose new book, Shakespeare in the Theatre: Sarah Siddons and John Philip Kemble, details their rise to fame. Ritchie is an Associate Professor of English at McGill University. Shakespeare in the Theatre: Sarah Siddons and John Philip Kemble is out now from Arden Shakespeare.
