Self-loathing is a silent epidemic—often overlooked, misunderstood, and deeply ingrained from an early age. In this groundbreaking episode of The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, Ginny Yurich sits down with Dr. Blaise Aguirre, Harvard psychiatrist and author of I Hate Myself: Overcoming Self-Loathing and Realizing Why You're Wrong About You. Dr. Aguirre reveals why self-hatred is rarely addressed in therapy, how it differs from depression, and the surprising ways it manifests in children—even before they can remember ever liking themselves. He dives into the dangerous impact of modern social media, the crucial role of autonomy in childhood, and why simply telling kids they are lovable doesn't work. Instead, he offers practical, science-backed strategies to help children build resilience, develop a sense of agency, and discover what truly lights them up. With eye-opening insights and real solutions, this episode is essential for parents, educators, and anyone seeking a fresh approach to mental health. ** Get your copy of I Hate Myself here Learn more about Dr. Aguirre here ** PREORDER Ginny's newest book Homeschooling today! Blaise Aguirre (I Hate Myself: Overcome Self-Loathing and Realize Why You're Wrong About You) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist specializing in dialectical behavior therapy. Blaise joins the Armchair Expert to discuss becoming an expert on Borderline Personality Disorder and DBT, the correlation between BPD and suicidal ideation, and that it's not a choice to live with the disregulation of BPD. Blaise and Dax talk about the analogy of a person with a BPD brain being saddled with a very fast car but not the skill to drive it, the fact that when we are disregulated we can't think properly, and why being too protective of one's feelings can actually rob them of the ability to confront necessary emotions. Blaise explains the glory he has when a patient leaves therapy, the saying in DBT that you have to go where angels fear to tread to truly help patients, and how liberating it is to realize that our common destiny is stardust.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. In today's episode of the Hardcore Self Help Podcast, I sit down with world-renowned psychiatrist, author, and DBT expert Dr. Blaise Aguirre to tackle the complex topic of self-hatred. As a pioneer in the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and adolescent mental health at McLean Hospital, Dr. Aguirre offers a compassionate and illuminating perspective on how self-hatred forms, why it's so persistent, and how we can work toward healing. Dr. Aguirre explains why self-hatred is often learned early in life through invalidating experiences and abusive environments and why it differs from self-criticism or depression. He introduces practical tools to break free from self-loathing, such as identifying its roots, recognizing toxic relationships, and taking steps to separate identity from these damaging beliefs. We also discuss the challenges of treating patients with self-hatred, the transformative power of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and how his latest book, I Hate Myself, provides a groundbreaking resource for those suffering from this deeply ingrained struggle. In this Step 3 AA session, Joe delves into the trap of self-pity, where we often demand recognition from others who are not able to see or hear us. He reflects on the times in his own life when he fell into this mindset, only to realize that true purpose comes not from seeking validation, but from breathing life into those who need it.Joe encourages us to shift our focus from self-pity and frustration toward service and purpose. Recovery is about finding those who are ready to receive the message, not forcing it upon others who aren't prepared. Join Joe McDonald as he expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering deeper understanding and practical advice for those on their recovery journey. In this session on Step 12 AA, Joe delves into the profound impact of encountering a higher power in the journey from self-loathing to recovery.“I speak to you personally about the self-hatred, the self-loathing, the guilt, shame, and remorse that I experienced every day of my life that I tried to extinguish with poisonous substances. And I thought there was no end to that, and I gave up on ever trying to stop because I figured out if I didn't keep trying to stop, I couldn't fail anymore. And then one day, I encountered this power, and I've never been the same.”Through Joe's experience, we see how encountering a higher power can transform even the most despairing life. This discussion emphasizes that no matter how deep the self-hatred, there is hope, and through the principles of AA, recovery is possible. Have you ever felt trapped by the endless cycle of self-criticism and the need to be a perfectionist? In this episode, Matt O'Neill dives deep into the profound impact of the wounds of judgment and guilt – and uncovers transformative strategies for overcoming these destructive thought patterns. Discover the importance of self-acceptance, the role of natural consequences in learning, and the freedom that would come from creating a judgment-free environment for growth and authentic expression. Break free from the shackles of perfectionism and cultivate a life of true happiness. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Embrace imperfection as an essential part of the human experience. Utilize the power of natural consequences as a teacher, rather than punishment. Create a safe haven for vulnerability and authentic expression in relationships. Shift from a mindset of criticism to one of learning and growth. Cultivate self-acceptance and extend compassion to yourself and others. [02:07] The Lasting Impact of Childhood Wounds The wounds of judgment and guilt are not only deeply rooted in our childhood experiences but also have a profound impact on our adult lives. These thought patterns can lead to an endless cycle of self-criticism, conditional love, and a tit-for-tat mentality in our relationships. [06:39] The Two Forms of Guilt There are two distinct forms of guilt – overcompensating and undercompensating. The overcompensating form of guilt leads to harsh self-criticism and impossibly high standards, while the undercompensating form manifests as people-pleasing and conflict avoidance. Both stem from a fear of judgment and a desire for perfection, profoundly impacting self-perception, relationships, and well-being. [10:27] The Beauty in Embracing Your Imperfection Embracing imperfection and allowing natural consequences to be the teacher, rather than punishment, is key to healing the wounds of judgment and guilt. Surrounding ourselves with people who understand, have compassion, and allow for mistakes is crucial, as it fosters an environment of mutual understanding and growth, where both individuals can extend the same empathy and patience when mistakes occur. [11:01] The Transformative Power of Affirmations in Healing Judgment and Guilt By regularly repeating positive statements, we can retrain our brains to focus on the constructive rather than the critical, countering the trauma of constant self-judgment. These affirmations remind us that imperfection is part of the human experience, enabling us to extend the same compassion to ourselves and others and approach mistakes as opportunities for growth. [26:30] The Role of Natural Consequences in Learning Look at natural consequences as a teacher, rather than punishment in the healing process. By sitting with the discomfort of our choices and allowing the consequences to guide us, we foster true growth and self-esteem, without the need for harsh judgment or criticism. Becky Gilhespie returns to the Singing Teachers Talk podcast to help us overcome our self-consciousness in singing. Becky is an experienced vocal coach working with touring artists, actors, and singers of all levels, having run studios in London and Sydney, and teaching at the Academy of Contemporary Music. Becky is the author of Singing for the Self-Conscious, which we'll be diving into headfirst in this episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS Becky Gilhespie recommends several strategies for overcoming self-consciousness in singing: have fun and enjoy the process, sing more throughout the day, journal to address negative self-talk, meditate and focus on breathing, make strange noises and faces to normalise them, video yourself to become comfortable with your appearance, sing for a trusted friend, sing outside to reduce pressure, develop solid vocal technique, express emotions through singing, and use permission slips from her book to take risks. Becky's book, Singing for the Self-Conscious, is a 30-day program designed to help singers overcome self-consciousness, boost confidence, and improve performance. It covers three sections: sense of self, evolving craft, and focusing outward, offering practical advice, exercises, and reflective tasks. Written in an accessible style, the book emphasises technique, personal style, and positive self-awareness, using Gillespie's experiences to relate to readers and guide them towards growth and increased self-confidence. Singing for the Self-Conscious features a 30-day program divided into three sections: Sense of Self, which focuses on personal growth, self-awareness, and confidence; Evolving Craft, which emphasises technique, style, and continuous improvement; and Focusing Outward, which encourages external connections, engaging with the audience, and authentic performance. Each section aims to reduce self-consciousness and boost singing confidence. BEST MOMENTS "It's a book aimed at the singer who finds themselves reeling with self-consciousness, avoiding singing, holding back in their performances, and generally just lacking some self-confidence" "I've come on leaps and bounds and it feels so good. And it feels so good to help other singers with it too" "Self-consciousness is a heightened sense of self-awareness that can verge towards the negative" EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Booking Link: https://beckygilhespievocalcoach.as.me Social Media: Instagram: @beckygilhespievocals Relevant Links & Mentions: (Book) Singing for the Self-Conscious by Becky Gilhespie (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.27 The Singing Masterchef with Becky Gilhespie Vocology in Practice (Podcast) Singing Teachers Talk: Ep.154 Managing Imposter Syndrome, Low Confidence and Overwhelm as Singing Teachers with Alexa Terry The work of Dr Valerie Young Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM): https://www.acm.ac.uk/ Line Hilton: https://linehilton.com/ The Sing Space: https://thesingspace.com/ BAST Book A Call ABOUT THE GUEST Becky is an experienced vocal coach working with touring artists, actors, and singers of all levels. Kindness is loving deeds, doing something for someone out of love. And in a number of places, the Bible says a real Christian will care for the poor. It's the Christian's social concern, social responsibility. Let's look at 1) the definition of kindness 2) the opposite of kindness 3) the counterfeit of kindness, and 4) how we cultivate kindness in our lives. Tackling Our Big Bully Beliefs In this enlightening episode of "Muscles and Mindset," Dr. Ali Novitsky delves into the intricate world of our internal dialogues and examines how they can often morph into personal bullies, hindering our health and wellness journeys. Through insightful discussion, Dr. Novitsky sheds light on the common "bully beliefs" that many individuals wrestle with and offers practical strategies for reframing these thoughts to foster a positive progression. All-or-None Thinking The episode opens with an acknowledgment of the fact that individuals are their most frequent conversation partners, highlighting the importance of nurturing a kind and supportive internal dialogue. Dr. Novitsky then navigates through a series of self-sabotaging beliefs starting with all-or-none thinking, emphasizing the need to abandon this black-and-white perspective in favor of embracing the nuanced realities of life. Should Statements, Jumping to Conclusions, & Personalization Moving forward, the concept of "should" statements is addressed, with Dr. Novitsky advocating for the replacement of "should" with "could" to cultivate a mindset of growth and openness. The discussion progresses to the pitfalls of jumping to conclusions and personalization, where Dr. Novitsky encourages listeners to adopt curiosity over fear and to distinguish between what is and isn't within their control. Disqualifying the Positive Additionally, the episode tackles the tendencies to disqualify positive achievements and succumb to a negative mental filter. Dr. Novitsky stresses the importance of acknowledging and celebrating successes, as well as focusing on the positive aspects of experiences rather than being overshadowed by negativity. Throughout the episode, Dr. Novitsky enriches the dialogue with personal anecdotes, including a relatable story about the learning experience from being scammed while purchasing Taylor Swift tickets, illustrating the power of reframing experiences and practicing self-forgiveness. In conclusion, Dr. Novitsky invites listeners to introspect on their own bully thoughts and apply the discussed strategies to regain control over their well-being. Moreover, the episode features an exciting announcement about the launch of the Optimal GLP-1 Weight Loss program, a collaborative effort with fellow obesity medicine specialists designed to offer comprehensive support in nutrition, exercise, mindset, and emotional regulation. As a society we are self-censoring at record rates. Say the wrong thing at the wrong moment to the wrong person and the consequences can be dire. Think that everyone should be treated equally regardless of race? You're a racist. Argue that people should be able to speak freely within the bounds of the law? You're a fascist. When the truth is no defense and nuance is seen as an attack, self-censorship is a rational choice. Yet, when we are too fearful to speak openly and honestly, we deprive ourselves of the ability to build genuine relationships, we yield all cultural and political power to those with opposing views, and we lose our ability to challenge ideas or change minds, even our own. Katherine Brodsky argues that it's time for principled individuals to hit the unmute button and resist the authoritarians among us who name, shame, and punish. Shermer and Brodsky discuss: growing up Jewish in the Soviet Union and Israel • why liberals (or progressives) no longer defend free speech • cancel culture: data and anecdotes and whether it is an imagined moral panic • free speech law vs. free speech norms • solutions to cancel culture • identity politics • witch crazes and virtue signaling • hate speech and slippery slopes • how to stand up to cancel culture. Katherine Brodsky is a journalist and author. She has contributed to publications such as Variety, the Washington Post, WIRED, The Guardian, and many others. Over the years she has interviewed a diverse range of intriguing personalities, including the Dalai Lama.
