These sweltering summer days have set off our symptoms that can only be diagnosed as a serious case of Pineapple Fever. For this show, we're as surprised as anyone that we have a swinging good time cruising through a whole set of pineapple beers in defiance of our usual fruit show disappointments. Also, we're finding ways to invite crows to the table; a chunky phase is never realized; Tim Allen answers for Craig now; and we request that our cakes stay right-side up. Beers Reviewed Temperance Beer Co. - Greenwood Beach (Blonde ale w/ pineapple) Pipeworks Brewing Co. - Pineapple Guppy (American Pale Ale w/ pineapple) Energy City Brewing - Piña Sunset Sorbet IPA (NEIPA w/ pineapple & coconut) Triptych Brewing - Fruit Aisle: Pineapple Whip (Tart ale w/ pineapple, vanilla, & lactose) Young Blood Beer Co. - Pineapple Demogorgen In the Upside Down (Pastry sour w/ pineapple, marshmallow, graham cracker, and vanilla)
This week, we have Glenn filling in as our host, joined by our April co-host, Todd. We try two beers from Pipeworks Brewing Co., its Select Schwarzbier and its Velocity of Light, a Double Dry-Hopped Oat IPA. We are joined by one of Pipework's co-founders, Gerrit Lewis. In this episode, Gerrit shares how Pipeworks became one of the first successful Kickstarter campaigns as the brewery opened with crowdfunding. The origin of the brewery's name is revealed, and then Gerrit shares how international travel influenced him and the other founders to open their own brewery. Our trio also discusses Pipeworks' can art—made by local artists—as well as what running a brewery without a taproom is like before wrapping up with an outlook for the future of the brewery as a whole. Pipeworks Brewing focuses on controlled expansion and innovative brews to keep things moving forward Since opening in 2012 Pipeworks Brewing has received praise for their brews. As their became more and more popular the brewery chose to keep their growth controlled, only sending beer to areas where it would be appreciated and move quickly. Locally, Pipeworks makes sure only their freshest and best beers get to consumers by self-distributing. In addition to allowing the brewery to keep more of the money from the beer they sale it also allows them to remain hands on with all of their accounts. This week we're joined by Director of Sales Ricky Boehm and Brewers Scott Coffman and Nate Morton. We talk about the early days of the brewery and the days of killing it on Kickstarter, their Abduction stouts and any new variants that may be in the works, scaling up, and what Pipeworks beer would pair best with an Italian beef... there's some debate on this one. Recent years have seen a surprising emergence of Chicago as one of the top destinations for hop enthusiasts, bolstered by a few well-publicized national medals and hype-inducing haze makers. But there were those that helped reshape our palates in the early days: the local leaders of hops. For this show, we review five hoppy beers (Oops! All Hazy) from some of the original hop-crazy Chicago breweries. Also, we take a seat on the Hot Bench, discuss seasonal drinkers vs. temperature drinkers, slam some Purplesaurus Rex with Dr. Applesauce, use nostalgia as a survival tool, and protect our precious cereals. Pipeworks Brewing Co. is an institution in the Chicago beer scene. Having developed a rich catalog of beers since forming in 2012, they've expanded their reach beyond the city and are doing so on their own terms. Creative Director and Head of Product Development Kate Brankin guides us through origins of the brewery, how they have adapted their beers over time while the brewery has grown and palates around them have changed. We may even learn of the long fabled origins of the battle between Ninja and Unicorn. Beers Enjoyed: NVU Vs. Like a lucky slot machine pull, we have a winning lineup of cherries on this show as we try five different styles of beer from five breweries, all featuring cherry. We learn quite a bit about these versatile drupes while we rank this group that has a few transcendent flavor experiences. This one is also ripe with diversions that include Zen gardens, Dairy Queen flagships, screaming lemons, the worst Sunday alibi, Al Borland Cosplay, hateful Hobby Lobby aromas, Dan Cortese’s filmography, and a BuzzBall the size of a baby’s skull. Beats, Beards & Brews continues its love of everything that starts with the letter "b" and dives into the wild world of bluegrass with a review of Trampled by Turtle's latest album Life is Good on the Open Road. Eric and Evan question whether the diddley bow is a real instrument or if Dan is spouting BS once again. Turns out he was telling the truth. The Midwest boys also discuss if a man, woman or child can be killed by a turtle and the most logical way that might happen. This marks the second entry in the exclusive BBBPod series of beast episodes. Dan and Eric drop reviews on two different scents of beard oil from Brass Bones Beard Co. based out of Connecticut. Eric tried out the Backwoods Bourbon scent (bourbon and sandalwood) while Dan received the Permanent Vacation scent (tobacco, vanilla lime). The Beats, Beards & Brews crew closes things down with a review of Ninja vs. Unicorn DIPA from Pipeworks Brewing Co. out of Chicago. Dan drank all of his beer ahead of the podcast, so he also shares a quick take on a War Pigs (Three Floyds and Mikkeller collabo) brew.
