Let's play fill-in-the-blank: Sex is _____ . The possibilities are endless! But, my word of choice is intimate. It's a perfect shorthand for the spectrum of desires, experiences, and, yes, traumas that inform every sexual encounter––even if the act in question is fake. As in: part of an acclaimed Hollywood film in which sex represents the main character's evolving agency.  Intimacy Coordinator Elle McAlpine has worked on some impressive projects, including the award-winning film, Poor Things and the award-winning Netflix series Baby Reindeer. Co-host Anne Remy engages Elle in a nuanced conversation about the power dynamics, energy transference, and permission structures at play behind the scenes of our favorite films and series. GUEST BIO Elle McAlpine is the co-founder of EK Intimacy and brings a unique perspective to intimacy coordination through her background in acting and directing. Passionate about exploring character psychology and storytelling through sexual expression, she helps create spaces where actors can approach intimate scenes with agency and creativity. Her recent work includes Poor Things, One Day, and The Winter King. Oh, fellow therapists, how I love you! That said, I'm super-concerned about our capacity to move through interpersonal challenges exacerbated by, among other things, a volatile election season. My question is: How do we model being with folks outside the profession––even those we disagree with––if we can't make space for complexities of thought and motivation within our own community? Marc Mathys considers Spiral Dynamics a solid foundation on which to build. You may have already guessed that Marc and I spent the bulk of this episode exploring the trajectory of the collective. What patterns are playing out? Where are the avenues for evolution? What can we, as individuals, do to support system-wide changes in our profession, our families, or the world? GUEST BIO Marc Mathys is an accomplished specialist in organizational transformation, certified professional coach, and social entrepreneur who holds multiple degrees, including Engineering and an MBA in Responsible Management & Leadership. As co-founder of Paradigm21, he guides organizations towards agile, distributed models while serving as a sought-after consultant and trainer in Spiral Dynamics and systems change. Discomfort doesn't automatically denote danger. Identifying the difference and holding those nuances takes practice. Let this episode be part of the lesson plan. Friction can rub us the wrong way AND expand our capacity for complex conversations. As Anne says, it's possible to engage with concepts that you vehemently disagree with, express concerns, explore differences, and come out the other end while still having a reasonable opinion of one another. GUEST BIO Deborah A. Ooten, PhD, is the founder/director of the Conscious Living Center. Sarah Buino is the host of Conversations With A Wounded Healer Podcast, a psychotherapist, teacher and author. Sarah and I begin our conversation talking about trauma and the benefits to healing through a trauma lens. We explore a bit about consciousness and what it means to “do the work” in therapy (and life). A little reminiscing about our meeting at a shame-resilience retreat in Texas in 2012, Sarah shares her experience working with therapists (and clients) that don't seem to have the same desire as we do to dig deep into their own healing. I tried to get Sarah to sing - she has an amazing voice - but she didn't grace us with a tune. If you ever get the chance to hear her sing live, jump on it. Anne's recent conversation with Movement Coach Olive Walton is an excellent reminder of how much mental anguish and physical damage the shame monster can inflict. It's no surprise, then, that shame is a favorite weapon of both white supremacy and many in the fitness industry. Olive: “Conversations I've had recently with a lot of people is how their firsthand experiences with physical education were pretty negative”.  We carry that negativity into adulthood, often pursuing movements our bodies couldn't accommodate then shaming ourselves for failing to fit a painfully restrictive mold. Healing takes on many forms. While our lists may vary, I'll wager that not many of us place “business stewardship” in the top ten. The thing is, in a capitalist society, doing business differently just might be the antidote to community disinvestment and unsustainable consumption of people and physical resources. And, since we gotta start somewhere, why not with a little fizzy bevy?  Mindy McCord, one-half of the team (alongside Layne Cozzolino) behind Siren Shrub Co., believes that being the best doesn't necessarily mean being the biggest. Nor does it mean following a rule book written by those who've come before, which, in the alcohol and alcohol-adjacent industries, means mostly male-lead, mainly venture capital-backed brands.  From engaging with local farm partners (the brand is based in Wisconsin) to being mindful of where they spend their dollars, Mindy says Siren's guiding principle is community wealth-building rather than scaling for global market dominance.  GUEST BIO Mindy McCord is the co-founder (alongside Layne Cozzolino) of Siren Shrub Co., a women-owned, values-led beverage company that's on a mission to create space at the table for everyone, regardless of their drinking preference! In this end of the year episode, we are joined by Brad Kammer, NARM Training Director and Senior Faculty, Dr. Laurence Heller, creator of the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM), and new Transforming Trauma host, Emily Ruth.  They start by saying goodbye to Sarah Buino, the inaugural host of the podcast, and expressing their gratitude for her contributions to Transforming Trauma.  They then share a heartfelt welcome to Emily. Emily, a NARM Practitioner and NARM Training Assistant, shares a brief overview of her background and how she originally found NARM. In her early part of her career she was a movement artist and a choreographer.  Then when she became pregnant with her first son she was curious about what was happening in her body and how she was being impacted in such transformative ways. This experience led her to becoming a birth doula. Emily shares that she found NARM shortly after starting graduate school and that NARM aligned with how she was already approaching her work and her life.  Larry reflects on the tremendous growth over the last year within the NARM international community. He was able to complete several trainings in Europe, completed a book in German on Shame and Guilt, and he and Brad completed a book (which will be published July 2022). Larry shares that over the next year he plans to continue with the NARM Post Masters Immersion Training. This Level 4 NARM Training is for clinicians who have completed the Level 3 NARM Masters Therapist Training and want to continue deepening their learning.  Brad reflects on how NARM's growth over the last year honors the mission of the NARM Training Institute, which is to create a professional community where helping professionals can receive mentorship and support in their work with complex trauma. He shares that he's excited about the future direction of the podcast, the further development of the NARM Inner Circle, and especially about their new book coming out soon: The Practical Guide for Healing Developmental Trauma: Using the NeuroAffective Relational Model to Address Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resolve Complex Trauma. They close by reflecting on the thousands of people now trained in NARM. As senior trainers in NARM, Brad and Larry express feeling humbled to see the growth of NARM and excited to know that this work is getting out more into the world. They are looking forward to building on the momentum in 2022 and taking on new projects to continue making NARM more accessible to helping professionals around the world. When you step into a big project or a big pivot, you've got to carve out some space, time and energy. Meet Sarah Buino who has been doing just that. Sarah had a very full time job as a group practice owner with 12 staff people, and knew there was something else she was meant to do with healers on a larger scale. She talked to me about how she set her group practice up to require much less of her so that she could step into this new work without overworking or burning out. Here's a bit more about her: Sarah Buino, LCSW, RDDP, CADC, CDWF is a speaker, teacher, therapist and the founder and president of Head/Heart Therapy, Inc. She's a member of the adjunct faculty at Loyola University Chicago and hosts the podcast Conversations With a Wounded Healer, which examines the role of one's own healing while being a care-giving professional. Sarah is obsessed with her 10-lb chihuahua named Batman. Here's some of what we talked about: Building Head Heart Therapy, a therapy center for weirdos with a staff of 12 Hosting 2 podcasts and making that manageable Podcasting tools Sarah and Annie both use Figuring out what she needs to do less of so that she can create new things Finding her role as a mentor with her staff Moving into the work of helping therapists and therapy organizations Balancing her agenda with responding to what's happening in her organization Managing different people differently Creating The Ordinary Trauma Project and writing a book Taking a month-long sabbatical to make progress on the book Emotionally preparing for the publication Here are some takeaways that particularly stand out to me: Takeaway #1: Sarah has built a team and handed over the day-to-day of the group practice so that she can step into her life's work of helping therapists heal. "What I want to do is help therapists heal and I can't help my staff heal because I'm their boss. And so there's a place that I love mentoring and I love supervising, but it's not the same as helping them heal. And so throughout the sabbatical, I was really thinking: how is it that I can create space to make this shift so that I can really step into what I truly think is my life's work." Takeaway #2: You've got to carve out time and energy to work on new projects. You can't necessarily just pile them onto what you've already got going on. Sarah took a month-long sabbatical to focus on her book. "I could wake up and be like, what do I want to do? What time do I want to start writing today? Right. What chapter do I want to work on today? So. Yeah. So I took a month to focus on the book." Takeaway #3: In addition to carving out time and energy for a big project, we've got to gather enough permission and safety. When we do brave and visible things and ask more of ourselves, we need to set up more support because it's hard and it's vulnerable. "(When the book comes out) I think it will be an extended period of wrapping myself in love and comfort and care, and definitely not reading reviews." “It doesn't matter what your purpose is; it could be a doctor or a dog mom. Doesn't matter. But you're not gonna do it wholeheartedly if you're obsessing about the size of your thighs.” ~Alexa Silvaggio Chocolate and ketamine.  Yes, that would be a fantastic title for a double album! Instead, they’re the ingredients for a vibe-altering conversation with wellness entrepreneur and chocolatier Alexa Silvaggio. As CEO of Savage Chocolates, she helps people cultivate an experience of pleasure and presence through chocolate.  Alexa believes in pleasure done well, pleasure done mindfully. “I don't have any interest in consuming something that leaves me feeling worse than when I started,” she says. That goes as much for people and experiences as it does food.  Alexa’s affinity for pleasure - so often treated as a dirty word and frivolous pursuit in Western culture - was born out of the years she spent restricting herself into an eating disorder. Alexa began internalizing both the conspicuous and covert messages about body shape and size at a young age, essentially disappearing in an attempt to become more valuable. The loop of self-hatred played in Alexa’s head nonstop throughout college until her sister finally helped her hit stop.  There’s a spiritual quality with which Alexa talks about starvation - of the body, of the soul. Likewise, the practices and methods she’s leaned on along her healing journey. Y’all, I had such a soul-satisfying visit with Alexa that we didn’t even get to the healer/wounded healer questions! And I don’t even care because, instead, we unraveled several threads at once, including my decision to begin ketamine treatments, the death of Alexa’s beloved mother, and the myriad paths that reconnect us to our source.  Listeners, use promo code PAUSEBREATHESAVOR25 for 25% off Savage Chocolate! *** Alexa Silvaggio is a wellness entrepreneur based in Los Angeles. “Once we understand [how adverse childhood experiences impact our development]… it removes blame and shame and judgment because it’s not something we’ve actually done.” - Veronique Mead Our host Sarah Buino is joined by somatic therapist Veronique Mead, a former practicing physician and assistant professor of family medicine. For 20 years Veronique has been researching and integrating science with her personal journey of chronic fatigue syndrome, finding powerful evidence of the connection between childhood adversity and chronic illness. Veronique’s findings align with the growing body of research about the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on our health. As Veronique and Sarah explore the topic of developmental trauma and its impact on long-term health, they find much overlap between the way Veronique frames her understanding and the NARM model. Both perspectives are based in a non-pathologizing orientation and view symptoms as intelligent, survival responses to environmental failures. Veronique and Sarah conclude the episode discussing the beauty in understanding and recognizing our own trauma and adversity experiences, and how they affect us personally. Veronique closes with her own feelings of hope: “Once we understand [how adverse childhood experiences impact our development]…it removes blame and shame and judgment because it’s not something we’ve actually done…If we can shift the perception of threat that’s gotten caught...it then gives us all these tools to work with that may really contribute to a much higher, greater capacity for healing and improvement...Then there may be a whole lot more encouraging, hopeful, empowering things we can do.”   About Veronique: Veronique Mead was an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and practicing physician when she decided to change careers and retrained as a Somatic Trauma Therapist. For the past 20 years she has been integrating the science with her personal journey of gradual recovery from disabling chronic fatigue syndrome into a new model for making sense of chronic illnesses of all kinds. The research explains how effects of trauma are not psychological as is still often mistakenly believed. Predominately centered on BIPOC, queer, trans, and fat clients, Celeste’s practice is where intersectionality - and the wounds so often heaped on top of those instances of confluence - is given its proper due. You’ll recognize the phrase liberation-focused therapy from previous episodes. At a macro level, it’s a framework that offers empowerment and healing in aid of communities most neglected by mainstream mental health services.  We even had time to unpack the healer and wounded healer questions - diving into issues of appropriation, the divine feminine, the seasonality of life, the Farmers Almanac (true story!). Celeste said it best: “I get to have cycles within me of blooming and conserving energy, being, you know, blossoming and ready to connect with all the plants around me - or being the one with one little leaf. I get to be all of them!” *** Celeste Meyer is a self-identified Brown Fat Femme who lives, loves, and works on unceded Muskoke/Creek territory known as Atlanta, Georgia. In her private practice, she predominantly sees BIPOC, queer, trans, and fat clients as they heal from trauma and focus on liberation through connection and somatic-based therapy. “It's just so important to know that we're so interdependent, and we thrive through the ability to connect, and that's the bigger picture.” ~ Shiralee Patel I’m honored and a little bit giddy to be the first podcast on which Shiralee Patel, PT, DPT, has ever appeared. I mean E-V-E-R! So crazy to me because this wise woman isn’t “just” a physical therapist; she’s my PT.  Shiralee is a skilled professional whose niche in craniosacral therapy and visceral mobilization encompasses more than “just” adjustments or realignments. She’s an expert in these feeling arts - light touches and manipulations informed by the body’s systems. When providers like her pause and tune in to what the body has to say, they hear the infinite wisdom of organs and emotions; they then translate that information to support better overall health and wellbeing. Her work aims to bridge Western and Eastern healing philosophies, bringing both into balance. She does this through touch, palpating organs, and identifying where in the body certain feelings or experiences have settled. Then, she applies techniques to help release those emotions, thus liberating the affected organ or muscle from pain or inflammation.  Does Shiralee consider herself a healer? Let’s just say you must listen in to hear her beautifully enlightened answer. For now, I’ll let it slip that she believes in the curative spark residing within each of us. “I like to kind of connect with [that].” *** Shiralee Patel, DPT, is a physical therapist who works with both adults and children specializing in craniosacral therapy and visceral mobilization. She is passionate about utilizing a holistic approach to determining the underlying factors that cause dysfunction and imbalance. "Aren't you tired of endlessly reading about white men who can't help but murder people of color in our communities? Aren't you tired of being made to feel helpless because of apparent untreatable mental illness problems that apparently lead to mass violence?" ~Sarah Suzuki I recorded this on March 23rd, 2021. March 22nd, there was a shooting in Boulder, Colorado, and on March 16th, there was a shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. I woke up today and cried because this is ridiculous. And I don't even know what to say about it, but luckily I have brilliant friends who say brilliant things. So I wanted to read this to you on the show. *** Sarah Suzuki is the founder of Chicago Compass Counseling, a group practice dedicated to serving the family system through inclusive, evidence-based behavior change counseling. “As we can release things that we're holding, we get to be more of ourselves and more of our own energy and more of our own essence and power. ” ~Dr. Sonali Deepika Of all the excellent words spoken in this conversation between Dr. Sonali Deepika and I, the one that stands out is pretty simple: shift. As in shift the male-dominated, white-centric, evidence-based paradigm that currently governs our Western approach to physical and mental wellbeing. OK, our discussion isn't nearly as heavy as all that sounds, thanks to Sonali's grounded nature and conviction in an alternate way forward, a luscious, magical path that reconnects people to their sacred ground.  Tired of the Western focus on verifiable symptoms and rigid diagnosis codes, Sonali ditched her psychiatry practice several years ago to search for a more holistic way to apply her knowledge and curiosity. The journey led her to her ancestral home of Sri Lanka and the pursuit of sensuality as a gateway to better health.   Sonali's affinity for this transformational work comes from a deeply personal tragedy that she and her family suffered. Luckily for her clients, Sonali's journey continues. She's creating new offerings for her sensuality coaching practice. This field melds her solid Western experience with an intuitive, feminine philosophy, helping people reclaim agency in their own healing and return to a more sacred flow.  *** Dr. Sonali Deepika is a lifelong learner who after practicing psychiatry for many years decided to pursue her passion for holistic healing in support of the embodiment of the soul's purpose. “Let's get this very clear: therapists are humans; humans are human. So many bases covered in this conversation with Bianca K. Hughes, LPC! Oh, and I haven’t even mentioned the cultural exchange insights - Bianca’s a British ex-pat residing in Atlanta (shout out OTP and ITP!) - or the book recommendation...or the NARM chitchat.  If there’s a single overarching theme to this discussion, it’s sacred vulnerability. Bianca makes a case for living and practicing in the glory of our imperfections. As a first-gen Brit born to Caribbean parents, Bianca brings a multi-directional perspective to her Atlanta practice. Her style is less linear, outcome-driven. For her, healing is a circuitous journey she shares with her clients. She’s quick to let them know she’s not the ultimate oracle or guide.  There’s a truism about therapists specializing in the areas where they need the work or have experienced the most growth. Bianca’s focus on perfectionism - and women, in particular, who struggle with its weight - is no accident. “Going back to that privilege,” she says, “...I think that specializing in perfectionism because of my own stuff, and I'm continuing to do my own work, helps me a lot easier with the clients that I work with.”  Doing our work and sharing that knowledge is how therapists hold space for healing. *** Bianca is a lover of authenticity. As founder of The Unusual Buddha, a multi-platform community that explores meditation, spirituality, and metaphysics through an irreverent, contemporary lens - and that lens often has a potato filter over it. Jim says the goal of his mini meditation “empire” (seriously, he’s everywhere) is to provide practical, accessible meditation resources.  That’s not to say that Jim’s funny memes and quick meditations aren’t rooted in an expansive knowledge of and devotion to his practice. Instead, he’s a modern-day student of Buddhism with a fresh way of alternating belly laughs with poignant truths.  Jim believes that the tools for creating inner peace shouldn’t be so difficult to gather or understand. Nor should the practice itself feel so weighty. His rationale is, if you’ve got eight seconds to take a full breath, congratulations! In this episode of Transforming Trauma, our host Sarah Buino interviews Mark Olson, Ph.D., the owner and director of the Pacific Center for Awareness and Bodywork (PCAB), a massage therapy school located in Kauai that integrates bodywork with somatic psychology, contemplative practice, and affective neuroscience with a trauma-informed framework.  Mark describes two main reasons that clients seek massage: they are experiencing either pain or anxiety. “And so right away, we’re already in this [body-mind] world. Anxiety obviously is very mind-based, and pain is a very complex topic that has numerous…elements to it.” Sarah and Mark discuss the importance of a bodyworker meeting the massage client with relational curiosity, rather than meeting them with preconceived knowledge, assumptions or interpretations about what the client is experiencing. Mark shares the many ways that he is using trauma-informed, NARM-informed principles to train new bodywork students in his school.  It starts with training them to invite their clients to be the one that sets the goals for the work, and the fundamental rejection of the dynamic that many physical therapy professionals actively promote: “The client feeling that they’re broken and the therapist thinking that they’re the ones to fix it.”  Mark and Sarah see how this dynamic is flawed from the outset, and how NARM has helped them to understand a deeper truth: that the client’s symptoms are present for an important reason that needs to be understood and honored, rather than forced to change. He shares how being educated in developmental trauma has given him the ability to have more awareness of his own internal reactions when working with clients, and he has experienced a greater sense of spaciousness in himself that “allows for that person to be wherever they are and be just curious about whatever they’re experiencing.”  With his deep understanding of neuroscience and trauma, and by bringing curiosity and an important relational component to the work, Mark is evolving the field of bodywork in an exciting direction. About Mark: Mark Olson, Ph.D., LMT has an M.A. in Education and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois. He holds a specialty in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuropsychology and Neuroanatomy which focuses on memory, attention, and eye movements.  He is the owner and director of the Pacific Center for Awareness & Bodywork, which integrates bodywork with somatic psychology, contemplative practice, and affective neuroscience within a trauma-informed framework. That exclamation point is not hyperbole, as you’ll soon hear. As founder and executive director of Kindred Community Healing, Shawna is a liberation-focused practitioner whose forward-thinking mental health care has the power to restore generations past, present, and future.
