This week we are excited to share an eye-opening conversation with the exceptional Dr. Kimberly Wilson, a retired Marine who transitioned from the battlefield to the boardroom. With a unique blend of personal experiences and professional insights, she unravels the complexities surrounding trauma within the military, a subject that's often swept under the rug. Dr. Wilson, also known as Dr. Burnout, takes us on a deep dive into the world of leadership, specifically from a woman's perspective. She provides a powerful narrative on the struggles women face in leadership roles, from being undervalued to dealing with societal pressures to be everything to everyone. As the conversation unfolds, we also delve into the impact of changing gender roles on men, discussing how they wrestle with societal and generational messages that can often lead to feelings of purposelessness and powerlessness. Rounding off our discussion, we address the authoritarian nature of military culture and how it affects recruitment and retention, before touching on non-authoritarian parenting, and financial wellness for the entire family. Buckle up for a journey that promises to leave you enlightened and inspired. Guest Bio: Dr. Kimberly L. Listening carefully plays a key role in the work of any improv comedian, keeping the perpetual motion of a live, unscripted show going. Matt Carter and Sparky Shelton, members of Rocket City Improv in Huntsville, tell us about how they partnered with fellow comedian Kimberly Wilson- co-founder of Shenanigans Comedy Theatre- to bring improv to Huntsville. They also touch on the common misconception of improv being a stepping stone to something better in comedy, and that there's a bit more to honing one's craft in improv than goofing off in front of an audience. Funny You Should Ask is a series where we hear from comedians in the TN Valley, getting to know their style, hear intriguing stories about being funny stage and plenty more. This week we're joined by Dr. Kimberly Wilson! We discuss impostor syndrome when it comes to careers, parenthood, and other common areas women experience it -- but importantly we dive into strategies to over come impostor syndrome. Dr. Kimberly Wilson is the go-to expert for high-achieving women experiencing burnout. Her mission is to cure 5,500 women of burnout in honor of her grandmother's legacy. After retiring from the Marine Corps and then leading mental health teams; she discovered that lines were blurred between her work and home life. She was caring for her infants and providing guidance to a team of staff at the same time. Her days became an endless cycle of putting out fires at home and work. She struggled with feeling that there wasn't enough time in the day and that, frankly, maybe she wasn't enough to get it all done. Dr. Kimberly was able to meet organizational goals and take care of her family; however, there was no joy. She was meeting all the metrics of success, yet secretly wondering how much longer could she endure at this pace? After crying in her car between meetings once again, a thread to the solution emerged. She created sustainable strategies to be present in her life. Dr. Kimberly assists women through a deep understanding and time-tested experience of supporting leaders. This experiential and academic understanding minimizes the risk of just spinning your wheels without results. Dr. Kimberly Wilson received her doctorate in International Psychology. She is an author, coach, provides therapy as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for over 20+ years, and an international psychologist. She is the mother of two teenagers. I used to think that living in a state of bliss was dependent upon me solving all my problems. "If I could only get rid of this problem, I'll be happy." But by the time I would solve one of my problems, 10 more would show up. As I kept going in this merry-go-round of problem->solution->problem->solution->problem->solution, I had a big a-ha moment: my problems were not going anywhere. My state of mind had nothing to do with the amount of problems I was facing or the speed at which I solved them. My state of mind was determined by the way I saw my problems. "Happiness with conditions is not happiness" is one of my favorite quotes. "Fall in love with the journey, not the destination" is another powerful quote with the same meaning. But what does that mean? Why do we read these words, and then fall into the same patterns once another problem pops up? This is what we discussed in this week's episode of #truthseekers with Dr. Kimberly Wilson. She makes an extremely important distinction between stress and BURNOUT. Listen as she addresses these 2 terms, and provides fantastic advice to navigate the difference between them. Dr. Wilson also touches upon her triggers... the things she has trained herself to recognize before the stress consumes her and she succumbs to burnout. I welcome you to share your triggers in the Comments. Sharing can be very powerful - you never know who else is going through the same thing! Take it from someone who has been there multiple times, and refuses to go back! Dr. Wilson is on a mission to help people cure burnout, and her tips, tricks, and classes could be just what the doctor ordered. ~ Coach Josh --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-davies7/support
