We talk to Kelly about a collaborative system they have implemented to identify and support underrepresented student populations to take advanced level classes. Kelly explains the heart behind the program, some of the roadblocks that students were experiencing, and how they help to support students to overcome these roadblocks. She shares how this has impacted student confidence, and the culture across the district. Kelly also talks about how the program has increased advance class sign ups overall and advanced science class participation by 1800%. She has 20 years of experience in education, 10 of which have been spent as a school counselor. Inspired by her high school math teacher, Kelly attended Texas A&M University where she received her degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a minor in Mathematics. Kelly began her teaching career at Parkhill Junior High as a mathematics teacher/coach and then taught mathematics at Berkner High School where she was also a softball coach and Bell Guard sponsor. In 2011, Kelly was awarded the Innovations in STEM Teaching Award from Texas Instruments Foundation.  Passionate about helping students academically, socially and emotionally, Kelly attended Lamar University and received her master's degree in School Counseling. Kelly returned to Parkhill Junior High where she has been a school counselor to 7th and 8th grade students for the past 10 years. She was named the Secondary School Counselor of the Year for Richardson ISD in 2022 and Texas School Counselor of the Year in 2023. Kelly attended Kindergarten through high school in Richardson ISD schools. She has been married to her husband, Bart, for 11 years and they have four children together, Sloane (7), Reese (5), Bear (3), and Sawyer (1).

Christopher was born in Hollywood Fl. Christopher graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education, and then later matriculated to South Carolina State University, where he earned his Master of Science Degree Individual and Family Development and masters in Professional School Counselor. He is employed at Bamberg Job Corps Center as the Assistant Deputy Director, where he makes an impact on the lives of youth ages 16-24. Recognizing that his job is not the only venue in which he can contribute to the success of young people all over, he is actively involved in the community, where he continues to have a positive impact on the lives of young adults from all walks of life. He is the youth minister at Victory Tabernacle; Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, in Orangeburg SC. Christopher is a member of the Delta Zeta Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and a member of the Orangeburg Branch of the NAACP. He served on the board of directors for Bamberg County First Steps, Bamberg County Chambers of Commerce, and Lower Savannah Council of Government. He was featured on the SC Educational TV website as an American Graduate Champion, featured on WACH FOX News, ABC Augusta, and the Wall Street Journal, the edition of Who 's Who among Executive and Professionals and Sheen Magazine. Christopher is a facilitator, speaker, community activist, and youth panel member for various churches and community centers for the State of South Carolina; concentrating on topics geared toward the positive growth and development of young adults. Christopher is the founder of Open-Mind Mentoring, a non-profit organization, which gives him the opportunity to further mentor and positively influence the lives of young people. He is a community activist, a community organizer and philanthropist. He has organized and hosted many events geared towards the development of youth in the community. He has partnered with many agencies to help build and motivate the lives of young adults. Christopher is the author of a book in titles “Mentoring At Its Best, Stories of young men who triumphed over adversity” and co-author of a book in titles, “20 Courageous Men, True stories of triumph, hope and the audacity to succeed”. Natalie Fikac is an educator with over 23 years of experience. Her educational experience began as an elementary school teacher, reading interventionist and dyslexia specialist, Professional School Counselor at both the elementary and secondary level, campus administrator and district level administrator. In her previous educational experience, she served as the Director of Guidance & Counseling in Spring Branch ISD where she supported 85 Professional School Counselors, the district CYS crisis team and advocated on behalf of the 35,000 students of SBISD. She has also served as an adjunct professor at Lamar University where she taught and lead aspiring administrators. She is passionate about growing leaders, instilling self-care in those that she supports and educating and advocating on behalf of students and families in the areas of mental health, behavioral health and social-emotional needs. We talk with Natalie about the importance of the tier one supports for the mental and behavioral health, and she gives some steps that schools can take to be more intentional in the area of tier one supports.

Greta Lundsgaard-Vaughn is a Professional School Counselor at Strawberry Hill Elementary School in Anamosa, Iowa. On WatchDOGS Radio today, Greta and Kori Leighty will discuss the success of their Watch D.O.G.S. program. Strawberry Hill launched their program in the Spring of 2012.
