Mothers and fathers are equally important. They both are pillars to the development of our children. Conceptually things are different for women and men. We need both perspectives and relationships. You don't have to be the biological father to experience fatherhood. We are grateful for the uncles, coaches, clergy, neighbors, and step dads that take responsibility and have a positive influence in our community. Let's take responsibility Fatherhood is who you are not a title you carry As a father when you take responsibility you are in the state of control you are accountable for the way you behave and react. You are the authority Remember we are all growing. Responsibility also leads to power. You have the power to penalize & discipline as well as provide love and compassion. This month we continue our series of Focusing on Fatherhood w/ Prof Vernet A. Joseph. I am the women and youth civility practitioner, an ambassador, author, wife, mother, coach and many other things. But I am a daddy's girl. I am a Blessedgirl because of the amazing father I had in my father Mr. Jeffrey S Garrison. Who we sadly lost earlier this year. So believe me when I tell you. I love talking, learning, exploring and just "kicking it" with fathers. Father's Day is a holiday of honoring fatherhood and paternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in society. A day to honor fathers and fatherhood It's observed in 111 countries. date to celebrate the special man who is a parent, friend and guide, unique role a father or a father figure plays in our lives. Professor Joseph and I explore Father Figures. He is also know as Mr. Productivity- as the expert he tells us the productivity doesn't mean being busy. It's critical that we invest out time with our family. Do not down play yourself, your influence and your impact The professor shares how your "audio must match your video in fatherhood. Children will see you long before they hear you. The importance of fathers supporting their children spiritually, financially, physically and mentally. Fathers provide the fundamental blueprint as they lead by example. As a son of immigrants from Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world, Dr. Vernet quickly learned the value of productivity and empowerment. After losing his mother to Sickle Cell Anemia in 1994, he vowed to help others reach their maximum potential. “Losing my mother at such an early age made me truly focus on what is really valuable and important in life.” He attributes his tireless work ethic and service to humanity from watching his grandfather and father act as Ambassadors for Haiti. Together the Joseph men have served a combined 100 + years of military service to date. It's not a surprise that Dr. Vernet is a leader who trains other leaders how to serve and produce a life that leaves a legacy. This month we are focusing on Fathers. We are featuring fathers-the untold stories of sacrifices, support and strategies of being a successful father. A father is a male parent. Everyone has a biological father, even if they're not raised by him. You might call your father Dad, Daddy, Papa, Pops, or even Father. A father is someone who believes that by donating his sperm for your creation, he has done his duty in life. … A dad is someone who gets up every day and does whatever he can to put a roof over your head, clothes on your back and food on your table A good father loves his children, but he doesn't let them get away with murder. He strongly disapproves of his children's misdeeds, using tough love to prove a point. He does this through the power of his words, not his fists. . Psalm 103:13: "As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him." Proverbs 22:6: "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." Did you know black women are 3-4 more times likely to die during childbirth or pregnancy related causes? The pandemic is making this even worse. Most of these deaths are considered preventable, and therefore, much more can be done to stop them. First, everyone—from doctors to the media to the public—needs to stop blaming women for their own deaths. Instead we should focus on better understanding the underlying contributing factors. These include a lack of data; not educating patients about signs and symptoms—and not believing them when they speak up; errors made by health care providers; and poor communication among different health care teams. Finally, studies have shown that interventions such as wider access to midwifery, group prenatal care, and social and doula support are effective in improving maternal health outcomes. It is important we make room for black mothers maternal mental health. We are more likely to experience some form of postpartum depression than our white counterparts. Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker in private practice providing community-based behavioral and mental health services. She is nationally certified as a Trauma Focused - Cognitive Behavioral Therapist. We're discussing our education system and the way we educate, discipline and relate to black children. We uncover the adultification of black girls and how to reshape and reframe the mind after trauma. Tara implemented the Community Outreach Program for Family Service and Guidance Center's Outreach & Integrated Care Program in Topeka, KS. This program allowed Tara to work directly with families to identify and overcome systemic challenges contributing to their struggle for mental and emotional stability. Collaboration with multiple community partners led to Tara becoming President of the Kansas African American Foster Care/Adoption Coalition. This volunteer organization works to engage community-based resources to support children and families involved with the child welfare system. A major accomplishment for KAAFCAC under Tara's tenure was a state-wide conference to educate birth families, foster/adoptive families and child welfare workers about the issues contributing to the overrepresentation of African American children in the child welfare system. Tara's fierce and passionate advocacy work has led to volunteer opportunities serving on the boards of multiple agencies and organizations whose missions involve improving the lives of children and families. She was appointed to the Kansas Governor's Child Welfare System Task Force and provided testimony to the legislature related to child welfare reform. As a result of this work she was appointed to the Social and Economic Justice & Peace Section of the National Association of Social Workers.
