Welcome back to Pizza Quest!Muhammad Abdul-Hadi's and Michael Carter's new book, "We the Pizza," just came out this week. They join us from their restaurant, Down North Pizza, in Philadelphia's Strawberry Hill neighborhood, to tell us all about it. The subtitle of the book, "Slangin' Pies and Saving Lives" is really what makes Down North Pizza unique among the many great pizzerias we feature here. The restaurant represents a larger mission, including the hiring of formerly incarcerated individuals, providing housing subsidies for those in need, and a number of other neighborhood and community projects that we discuss in this conversation with Muhammad and Michael, all designed to elevate the quality of life for the locals and to also serve as a model for, hopefully, otherDown North's across the country.  It's a work-in-progress but the launching pad for it all is the amazing and creative square-style pan pizza menu created by head chef Michael Carter and his team of cooks. The creativity on display is beautifully captured in their new book, written by Muhammad, along with co-author David Joachim, as well as beautifully energetic photos by Amurri Lauren. As you will hear here, all of the good works envisioned by Muhammad, who has been a community activist for years in Philadelphia, are made possible by the success of Down North Pizza. Join us as we discuss how to make a vision of community transformation come true, in this week's episode of Pizza Quest.

Thirty episodes ago, that week's guest discussed with me the notion of this podcast being a one-man weekly endeavor."That's a grind, man," he said. "That's a grind."He was right when he made that comment, and it made me realize that that was a good summation of what the thing had been to that point. And it hasn't changed. It really is a grind to do the outreach and the scheduling, the interviewing and the editing, the prep and the getting the thing to the places it needs to be.There are five essential components that make it all worthwhile:1) meeting new people and hearing their stories2) getting exposed to music I've either never heard of or listened to before3) having guests tell me that they've enjoyed the interview4) experiencing real-life, there's-still-good-in-the-world moments with each interaction5) personal weekly pride in task completion and productivitySo, when I sit in the chair across from a total stranger like DINKC, and I get to learn about him, his family, his culture, his story, his wishes and dreams, and I then get to put it out there for whoever might be interested in sharing that same experience with me, it's worth it. You cannot put a price tag on the opportunity to meet a guy like DINKC. Now, I only sat with him for a couple of hours, and -- who knows -- we may never see one another for the rest of our lives. As DINKC says and lives and is, Death Is Not Knowing Certainty. It doesn't matter, though; my life and my time on this planet are richer for those two hours, and nothing can change that. So, please check out our conversation. DINKC is a son and a brother and an uncle and a father and a husband and an artist. He's a businessman, a dreamer, a friend to many, and an asset to the Kansas City metro area.We talked about his upbringing, his culture, his values, his art studio -- DINKC Studios (600 Ohio Ave. in Strawberry Hill), and we also talked a little bit about some of his favorite records, which were these:Ritchie Valens (1959), Ritchie ValensNotorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die (1994)Barrio Bravo (2001), Celso PiñaYou can give DINKC a follow on Instagram here and here, and you can check out Zoe Strohm's The Pitch article on him here.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples featured in this episode. The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1757 On this day, Horace Walpole wrote a letter to his friend John Chute Esquire about the heat wave coursing through Europe. July of 1757 set many records for heat. At the time, it was the hottest month ever recorded in Paris history and for the country of England. The English physician John Huxham, a provincial doctor remembered for his study of fevers, noted that the heat caused many health issues for people. Horace's letter from his home at Strawberry Hill ended with these words, I say nothing of the heat of this magnificent weather, with the glass yesterday up to three quarters of sultry. In all English probability this will not be a hinderance long; though at present... I have made the tour of my own garden but once these three days before eight at night, and then I thought I should have died of it.  For how many years we shall have to talk of the summer of fifty-seven!   1817 Birth of Henry David Thoreau, American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher. National Simplicity Day is observed on July 12th in his honor. Thoreau advocated for living a life of simplicity, and he is best known for his book Walden, a reflection on simple living in natural surroundings.  A leading Transcendentalist, his essay, Civil Disobedience, was an argument for disobedience to an unjust state. Thoreau said all of these things: The bluebird carries the sky on his back. God made ferns to show what he could do with leaves There are moments when all anxiety and toil are becalmed in the infinite leisure and repose of nature. I know because I read...Your mind is not a cage. It's a garden. And it requires cultivating. Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders. Gardening is civil and social, but it wants the vigor and freedom of the forest and the outlaw. I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion. Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of each. We can make liquor to sweeten our lips Of pumpkins and parsnips and walnut-tree chips. I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance than I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn.   1895 Birth of Oscar Hammerstein II, American lyricist, librettist, theatrical producer, and director in the musical theater. Oscar Hammerstein II was born into a show business family who lived in New York. His father and uncle, Willie and Arthur Hammerstein were successful theater managers, and his grandfather, Oscar Hammerstein I, was a famous opera impresario. Oscar's career spanned almost four decades, during which time he won eight Tony Awards and two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. For Carousel, Oscar famously wrote his most famous lyric, June is bustin' out all over.   The last song Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote together before his death in August of 1960 was Edelweiss, Captain von Trapp's poignant farewell to his beloved homeland. Oscar used the flower to symbolize Captain von Trapp's loyalty to Austria.  Nine months after The Sound of Music opened on Broadway, Oscar Hammerstein II died from stomach cancer.   1895 Birth of Richard Buckminster Fuller, American architect, systems theorist, author, designer, inventor, and futurist. Richard styled his name R. Buckminster Fuller for his writing. He wrote over thirty books and coined or popularized terms such as "Spaceship Earth," "ephemeralization," and "synergetics." In 1960, he also popularized the geodesic dome, and he installed one called the "Climatron" in the Missouri Botanical Garden. Richard predicted it would last for a while but was not a permanent structure. The word Climatron is a blend of the Greek words for climate and machine. The magnificent dome was also the world's first fully air-conditioned greenhouse. The Climatron ranges from 64°F at night to a high of 85°F — the perfect temperature range for keeping the rainforest plants happy and healthy. Today, some sixty years after its debut, the Climatron is still standing and is home to nearly 3,000 plants covering almost 200 different plant species, including one that produces the largest tree-born fruit in the world: the Jackfruit. The Climatron also hosts at least three varieties of coffee plants. And every January, the Climatron closes for tree trimming of the tallest trees as they reach the edges of the geodesic dome. Trimming allows the trees to continue actively growing and lets sunlight filter in to reach ground-level plants. Richard wrote, Nature does have manure and she does have roots as well as blossoms, and you can't hate the manure and blame the roots for not being blossoms. There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly!!!   He also wrote, Nature is trying very hard to make us succeed, but nature does not depend on us. We are not the only experiment.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Manual of Plant Grafting by Peter MacDonald  This book came out in 2014, and the subtitle is Practical Techniques for Ornamentals, Vegetables, and Fruit. This is such a handy book to keep in your garden tote or potting bench. As Peter points out, grafting is simply the process of uniting one plant with another so that they become a single plant. If you have been gardening for a while, it's only natural to grow more curious about grafting as you grow your garden.  Peter's book is an excellent grafting resource, and he's quick to remind us that, There is no single correct way to graft a plant. There are, however, different ways of successfully grafting. These are not necessarily preferred or better-just different. Therefore, it is not possible to provide one technique for the grafting of each species, there are simply too many options available. Peter wrote, One of the main aims of this book is to discuss in detail the principle techniques being used by growers. I have been fortunate to go on study tours to the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, and Australia. ...For the majority of the information on practical grafting, however, I have had the assistance of many propagators working on nurseries in England that specialize in grafting. Their location in England should be borne in mind when considering the timings and specific details of the grafting techniques, especially the aftercare.  The other principle source of information...has been the journal of The Combined Proceedings of the International Plant Propagators' Society. Any professional horticulturist involved in producing plants should be a member of this society. The journal goes back over 50 years and holds a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of propagating and growing plants. More importantly, with the motto "Seek and Share,' its members freely exchange knowledge, making it a very friendly and supportive society with which to get involved. If you are new to grafting, I hope this book will give you the confidence to have a go. If you already graft, I hope you will find a few pointers to help you improve your success rate or quality of final plant. If you just have an interest in gardening, - hope you will be inspired to find out more about some of the characters who have contributed to the development of grafting over the years. Chapters in Peter's book include one on the History of Grafting.  Here's an example of Peter's straightforward tone. He wrote, BETWEEN THREE AND FIVE THOUSAND years ago, a farmer took a shoot (or scion) from a plant and attached it to another plant (or rootstock) growing nearby in such a way that they formed a union and the shoot began to grow. The first graft had been successfully carried out. To achieve this, however, the two plants had to be related closely enough to be compatible and form at least a temporary union. A cut would need to have been made on both plants and put together so that vascular cambium cells were close enough to form a connection across the callus bridge. The callus bridge would only form if the two plants were held together and prevented from drying out. The vascular cambium would only form if the tie were tight enough to apply some pressure to the cuts. Finally, the entire pro- cess would only be successful if done at the right time of year when cells were actively dividing in the rootstock and the scion buds were dormant. How many times might this have been tried before a successful union was achieved?  How often would someone persevere in trying to achieve a union if the first attempt was unsuccessful?    Other chapters focus on the Uses of Grafting, Formation of Graft Union, Production of Rootstock and Scion Material, and Bench Grafting. The chapter on bench grafting is divided into cold and hot callus grafting, which is used depending on the time of year and whether artificial heat is applied to the graft.  Peter also has a chapter on Field Grafting, which is the other primary method of grafting used by growers. Peter also covers Vegetable Grafting - something that may appeal if you are interested in grafting tomatoes and other vegetable salad crops. Vegetable grafting is something that the Japanese have popularized. And Peter also talks about another specialty area in a chapter on Grafting Cactus. After forecasting the Future of Grafting, Peter shares some other helpful resources, including three charts of woody plants, both ornamental and fruit, that can be grafted. Other charts suggest grafting options for various plants and suitable rootstocks. This book is 232 pages on how to grow your grafting skills to improve the performance of your ornamental and productive plants - what a great skill to have! You can get a copy of The Manual of Plant Grafting by Peter MacDonald and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $ 18.   Botanic Spark 2012 On this day, Hugh Johnson, author of Trees, The Principles of Gardening, and many writings on wine, wrote in Trad's Diary, which started as an editorial column of the RHS Journal: ‘You garden with a light touch' said a knowing visitor the other day – appreciatively, I hope. Could she have been referring to the complementary campanulas ("kam·pan·you·luhs"), the aleatory alliums, the volunteer violas and random ranunculus that meet your eye wherever you turn? ‘You leave things in; so much nicer than taking them out.' I do take them out. I've been barrowing opium poppies to the compost for weeks now. The idea is to let them show a first flower or two, decide whether it is a good colour or not, is fully frilly or otherwise desirable, and pull up the ones that have no special quality, in the hope of improving the stock. After years of doing this I admit we aren't getting very far, but I enjoy the process. The thing to remember is what comes out easily, like the poppies, and what leaves roots in the ground. You can enjoy an allium, even into its seed head phase, and still get rid of it. Not so an invasive campanula. And violas are the devil to do away with. It's lucky I enjoy weeding so much.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Could you also share with us what are one or two books that have had the biggest impact on you? It could be a book that you read a very long time ago or even one that you read recently that has left impressionable mark on you. Could you share with us what's one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about? Either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. Where can listeners find you online? Do you have a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you'll tend to revert to this quote? It kind of helps to get you back on track or get you refocused if for any reason you got derailed. Do you have one of those?     Highlights   Shaahin's Journey   Shaahin shared that they moved to the United States as refugees, political refugees in the 1980s. By the time he was 15, he had started his first business, he left home, left family, no friends, basically sleeping in abandoned buildings, abandoned cars, trying to figure out what to do with himself. He got involved in the electronic music scene, he found a mentor and he invented an alternative to a drug that was very popular at that time called Ecstasy. It became a global phenomenon and by the time he was still in his teens with a grade school education, he had 200 employees, and it created over a billion dollars in revenue.   And so, he had 200 employees working for him, he had a lot of customer service people, he knows it's a show about customer service, he knows a lot about that. And from there, he went on to inventing Digital Vaporization technology, all the vapes and eCigs that you see came from technology that he developed and invented and patented. And from there, he went on to master the Amazon landscape. And so, now he teaches people how to create recurring revenue streams by starting Amazon seller accounts, and selling products through the Amazon platform through his Amazon Mastery Course.   Keys that Needs to be Present for You to Be Successful in this Channel – Amazon Reselling   Shaahin shared that interestingly enough, he thinks one of the things that's important when you're selling on the Amazon platform, is that you have to know how to tell the right story. One of the things that they learned from platforms like Amazon, is that the form of marketing as it was known in the past as disruption marketing, changed dramatically. And whereas in the past, marketers were disrupting you to get your attention, Amazon changed that game.   So now, instead of being disruption marketing, we are permission marketing. And not only that, when you sell something on Amazon, when you're a seller, you have to know how to speak the language of conversion for that platform and it's very different.   And so, the work they do is based on the work of a guy named Professor Robert Cialdini, who wrote the book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion and another book called Persuasion. And what they do is they teach people how to use influence in creating their listing, how to become Decision Architects so that when people arrive at your listing, they're already sold. He likes to say often that the sale is made before the person even lands on your listing. And that's so true. So more true today than ever.   Me: Amazing. I like the phrase or the coin that you just term decision architects. It sounds so eloquent.   About Shaahin's Book – Billion: How I Became King Of The Thrill Pill Cult   Me: So you have a book out or is it out yet, Billion?   Shaahin shared that the book just dropped called Billion: How I Became King Of The Thrill Cult, it's available on Amazon Kindle, Apple, and you can get the audio book now. The audio book just dropped too. So it's called Billion: How I Became King Of The Thrill Pill Cult, he's super excited about that, they just got to film deal for that.   And then anybody that's interested, he has an Amazon course where he teaches people how to start Amazon businesses from anywhere in the world. He's got people in Africa, people in Saudi Arabia, people in the United States, Canada.   And for any of your listeners, if you guys mentioned Yanique, he will give you that program for free. It's a $200 program, it's a one hour course A to Z, how do you get reviews? How do you do great customer service? How do you do all those things that go along with finding a product and selling it on the Amazon platform? How do you start a seller account? And anybody that wants to can reach out to him, his email is darkzess@gmail.com.   Me: Amazing. So tell us a little bit about the book.   Shaahin shared that the book basically just goes through his journey and his story that he told you now that was basically going from being broke and sleeping where he could lay his head to creating over a billion dollars in revenue. And there were some very exciting times during that period of time, but he was a kid and he didn't know much about business. And all the lessons he learned he kept in a journal and he has those in the book, so it's very interesting. The book is part autobiography and part personal development, where he teaches and coaches people how to become the best versions of themselves, using lessons that were hard fought for him.     Things That Helped to Manage Customer Experience That Forms the Customer Journey with Their Expectation   Me: Now as you mentioned, our show is about navigating the customer experience and I know Amazon is a brilliant platform, really, really great. Of course, I'm sure everybody in the world uses it. But a lot of industries that maybe tapping into the Amazon platform I'm sure are affected by let's say, the shipping and logistics issue that has been impacted by the world globally because of the pandemic. What are some things maybe that you've experienced that has helped to kind of manage the customer experience because that does form parts of the customer journey when their expectation is x, but the actual experience is y, how do you go around that? How do you navigate that to kind of come up with still a very good experience?   Shaahin stated that this is really interesting. And he's glad Yanique brought that up. So, he'll say this, he thinks there's a couple things that have happened. So Amazon, this company that was started by this little guy, Jeff Bezos, little at the time, now he's huge, disrupted the industry of commerce. And he did this very similar, he (Shaahin) likes to use the example of Piggly Wiggly. Piggly Wiggly was a disrupter.   Why?   Well, back in the turn of the century, if you wanted to buy something in America, you'd go into a store and the man would say, “What do you need today Mr. Jones?” You'd say, “Well, I need some bread. I need some beer. I need some sundries. I need some rubber bands, whatever.” He'd put them in a bag, he tells you how much it was and you would leave, you would have no choice.   So this guy comes around Piggly Wiggly, he goes, we're going to disrupt this entire industry. How are you going to disrupt it?   Well, we're going to build these things. What are these things, they're called aisles. They're going to allow us to have more than one brand, allowing competition in the marketplace.   And we're going to allow customers to come in and pick whatever they want and bring it up to the front and check out. It'll give them an opportunity to see touch and feel the product. Not only that, we're going to have these things called carts where people can go through the aisles, put stuff in carts, and then check them out. It changed commerce forever.   Similarly, Jeff Bezos has done the same thing with his marketplace. Now what's the important thing from a customer service standpoint that he's done is that he's taken the friction out of the sale.   In the old days of the internet, we tend to forget, especially people who are his age, he's 46 now and he remembers the first days of the internet, younger people might not remember it. You didn't know who to trust, you felt more secure going to a brick and mortar store where you could touch and feel the product and buy it. You didn't know if you bought it on a website, if they would take your credit card number, if you'd never see the product, if you'd see it in three weeks, all those variables have been taken out.   So again, Jeff Bezos is being proactive with his customer service, the best customer service is done before the consumer ever even buys the product. He made sure that the products on the site were of high enough quality, he made sure that there was plenty of selection, and most importantly, the lowest most competitive prices, which he realized was very important, people wanted to save money. Now, from a customer service standpoint, what Jeff Bezos did was he said, “You know what, we're going to let the customer handle their own returns.” Insane, nobody had ever done that before.   He said, “Yeah, we believe that customers can handle most of their issues, and they don't need us. And besides, the cost for us to pay a representative, whatever it is $5, $10 an hour on the end of the other phone to deal with a customer for an hour or two may be more than the cost of the goods.” So what he did is he created easy returns. If you go on to Amazon to this day, you'll see easy returns. If you buy something and you don't like it, you go into the app, or you go into the back end, and you click return, it says what's your reason, you say other, you're good to go, they refunded right back to your card. In many instances, you don't even need to send it back. So it's a form of efficiency.   Now, it's a dual edged sword because it has also created greed within customers. People are needlessly returning things, and people are more expectant now for the silliest reasons. Somebody might order a can of a food product, eat the food product, and then return the tin because it has a dent in it, half empty and this is much more commonplace.   Now Amazon, interestingly enough, doesn't care, unless it's their own product and even then they don't care because they've got such higher margins. But if it's a third party product, Amazon just builds the third party company, it becomes the sellers issue that their product was returned and they handled the customer service from that end.   And nowadays, when they do customer service, he has a policy where they just refund people's money. But every once in a while, every occasion, when they get a ridiculous customer, somebody who is absolutely ridiculous, he will personally call them up himself and they're always shocked that the President of the company is on the phone. And not only will he get them on the phone himself, he will let them know how silly they are being, in a very polite way and this goes against everything in customer service. And then he will sell them something else, he will make it a point not to leave the phone call without having sold them something.   And it always leaves a great experience, a great story that they're going to tell people. And, he doesn't do this with reasonable customers. So if you get a product that's bad, or you have a bad service experience, or there's an employee that maybe treated you unfairly, then of course, they just refund your money and they take care of you the best that they can, always.   But occasionally, you will get somebody who's being unreasonable and the best way to approach somebody who's being unreasonable is to confront them with their unreasonableness and to just call them up and have a real adult conversation. And more and more he's finding that that's a very effective tool because people who are trying to cheat the system, people who are trying to take advantage are generally cowards.   So when confronted, you can come across that. Another issue that they have is reviews. So this is one of the big things, Amazon has one of the largest blog networks in the universe. Why? Because they've got you and me buying things on there and writing content for them in the form of reviews, making videos in the form of reviews. That's all searchable content, though you're producing for free and giving to Amazon as their property. They own that work that you just created and put on their site and for it, they give you back nothing.   Now, reviews are a dual edged sword. So, you get some people leaving honest reviews, and you get some people leaving fake reviews, some competitors may leave reviews for your product because they don't like you and they want people to think that your product is bad. They've had competitors leave reviews saying, “Hey, there's a fly in the product. Literally, there's a fly in the product, there's a this or that.” They had one guy putting magnets inside some tea and being like, hey, look, it sticks. We're like, static electricity, it's a thing. So, there's a lot of that going on. But at the same time, consumers are now learning that they can use their reviews, their social proof against the companies as a tool for them to get free things.   So what they will do is they will leave a bad review, and then sit back and wait. People do this on Twitter, they do it on Facebook, that's why they take to social media. And they'll just sit back, maybe they'll do something weird. He heard of a guy who tore his shoe laces or tore the soles off his Nikes and posted it on social media and was waited for Nike to call him back and give him a new pair. But it's this ecommerce 3.0 that has spoiled the consumer at the end of the day. And it's for those ridiculous types of things where he feels compelled to call those people back. Now, he doesn't encourage anybody to do that because you'll never get what you want if you're trying to cheat them. And it's unfair to other people that have legitimate grievances. But there's a whole faction of people that leave negative reviews for other people just so they can engage them, and then get a free thing or get a refund or not have to pay for their product.   And as any business, especially a small business, you have to have a way to address that in your business. And his way is just have the CEO call them, you won't get very much of those kinds of calls, but you got to call them. And sometimes you just have to reason with people because people are unreasonable in general with their expectations.   So, they have another brand of glasses that they make of sunglasses, and it's a special type of lens that you wear at night, and it blocks the blue lights, and it's one of the best in the marketplace. And with that product, they offer an unlimited money back guarantee, they're called Sleep Doctor Glasses. And the website is sleepdoctorglasses.com and they offer an unlimited warranty. And the reason why they did this, and it's not just a defect warranty, it's a run your car over warranty, it's a grab a hammer and drill holes through it warranty, whatever you do, run over it with your truck warranty.   And the reason they do this is that most people don't want to damage their personal property, most people love the product so much that they don't want to damage it. But if you're one of those people who does, they're going to use that as a story and they're going to tell that story. And not only are they going to tell that story, you're going to tell that story to everybody that you know, you're going to go, “Man, I bought these glasses for $40 bucks, $50 bucks, from sleep doctor glasses, and my 400 pound gorilla that I keep as a pet sat on them and smashed them. And they just sent me a new pair. And they said as many times as he sits on them, I'm going to get new pairs.” And that creates more marketing, more promotion, more social proof than any marketing that they could do.   So you can't do that for every product, especially if you have a product that's not as high quality, but it's a great hack to offer that to them. When he was in the vaporizer business, they offered extended warranties, electronics, a lot of companies make a lot of money on the extended warranties, and they actually made more money on the extended warranties than we did selling the product because what's your cost on an extended warranty zero, and you get $100, $125 bucks on a $400 product is 25% pure profit that you're making with the product.   Yeah, you're selling it for $400 but you got parts, you got to manufacture. So warranties are beautiful, and rarely, by the way for you guys who are watching this work in the favor of consumers. So if you just always say no to any extended warranty, and at the end of the day, you use that money to fix the thing that breaks, once you'll be in a better place. So the rule of thumb is do not buy the extended warranties, they don't work in the favour of the consumers.   But they had these vaporizers and they had this guy who and remember these are the first vaporizers, they were huge, they were not the eCigs that we see today, this was the original stone age vaporizers.   And they had this guy who bought the extended warranty and then he bought the additional, he wants to say slip and fall, he bought the original water damage, they had different levels of the warranty. So one level was just protects you against defects and other one was drop it in the pool and they cover it. And he bought the extended warranty and he would do crazy things, he would drag it behind a car, he would light like all kinds of objects inside of it, and make them explode. And he would call without fail every month and be like, “Hey, I broke my device, time to send me the new one.”   And finally, he called him personally, he was shocked, again that the CEO was calling him, he said, “I love this. Thank you for making these videos, people love them on our website, here's what I'm going to do for you. Anytime you want a new device, just call me. I've refunded your money, I've refunded you for the extended warranty, you no longer have an extended warranty but here's what you have. Call me anytime, here's my cell phone and anytime you break your device, for whatever reason, I'll just send you a new one. You don't even have to send it back.”   And he was so pleased, he did it maybe three more times after that. They never heard from him again but he continued to make videos about how great their device was.   And so, it's another great practice he thinks that people don't do specially CEOs of companies or people that are running companies, even if you're a mom and pop is that we lose touch with our customers, we lose touch with the people that are paying our salaries, people that are paying for our livelihoods.   And he thinks it's great to reach out and get to know them. He knows it's taboo and if you're a hothead, you probably shouldn't be the one doing that, somebody else on your team should be doing that. But if you're cool and you like people, you like humans, what a great thing to do, not everybody likes humans, depends on the day he's talking to people, his patience runs thin.   App, Website or Tool that Shaahin Absolutely Can't Live Without in His Business   Shaahin shared that he uses lots of great tools. So, he loves Evernote, which he thinks is fantastic, he uses Evernote. He loves 1Password, they use that company wide to maintain passwords, which he thinks is really useful. They're big fans of Asana as far as task management for his managers that he does. He loves the website Upwork and Fiverr, they're big fans of that, and they use that in their FBA seller course. So if you guys go to www.fbasellercourse.com or if you email him, darkzess@gmail.com, he'll give you the Amazon Mastery Course for free the one hour crash course.   So, those would be probably his top tools as far as like personal productivity. He loves a VR app called Tripp, it's awesome. It works on the Oculus ecosphere. So if you use the Oculus VR headset, it's a fantastic app that gets you in a flow state in under 10 minutes. And it's one of the most beautiful meditative apps; he thinks out there, it's really a game changer. So, he really recommends the Tripp app, he thinks it's really fantastic. And he also loves the Muse Headband for meditation as well; those two things are really great.   Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Shaahin   When asked about books that have had the biggest impact, Shaahin shared that he's going to say his own book Billion: How I Became King Of The Thrill Pill Cult. Again, available on Amazon and audible check it out if you guys liked his story, if anything he said here inspired you or rang true with you, check out his book and leave him a review. But he's a big fan of David Allen Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity, he thinks he's an amazing, probably the best person in personal productivity if you're in customer service, that'll be a great book. I like Richard Koch, The 80/20 Manager: The Secret to Working Less and Achieving More, which would be great for anybody who's managing customer service people or managing any people of any kind. Unreasonable Success and How to Achieve It: Unlocking the Nine Secrets of People Who Changed the World by Richard Koch as well. And always the books by Robert Cialdini Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.   What Jeff is Really Excited About Now!   Shaahin shared that he wants to come to Jamaica. He has been many times. He's been to Negril, he's been to Montego Bay, he's been all over Jamaica, actually. He loves the island, loves the people, and loves the culture. Such an amazing place, he's been to Kingston, he's been up in Strawberry Hill.   Me: You are a Jamaican veteran. Well, the next time you come to Jamaica, make sure you hit me up. I am in Kingston.   Shaahin stated that he loves that, they can drive up to Blue Mountains, get some of that coffee. It's such an amazing place right now.   Right now he's busy teaching people, inspiring people how to get out of the grind. The greatest crime that has been done to the average person in the last 100 years is this concept that you have to sell your hours for money. And they're changing that now, they're changing that paradigm with the work that they're doing on Amazon, anybody can start an Amazon business for little or low cash, very little money, and to grow that business to a seven figure business in a couple of years by following some very simple paint by number recipes that they teach you. So, his goal for the next year is to inspire 1000 people to start 1000 Amazon companies, becoming a seller on the platform, creating great products and selling them and then creating amazing companies in the next two years and selling those to create recurring revenue.   Where Can We Find Shaahin Online   Shaahin shared that if you guys are interested in this content, and by the way, they'll rebroadcast this on their channel, they're up to about 67,000 subscribers now. So they'll share this and they'll try to send some subscribers to Yanique's show. He knows they have a lot of customer service people who watch their show, who would be very interested in the content Yanique is putting out. So with your permission, they'll do that as well.   So they have a show called Hack and Grow Rich, it's available on Stitcher, Spotify, Apple podcasts, wherever podcasts are found, and also on YouTube if you prefer video content. So make sure to check them out on those channels like subscribe, dislike, put rude comments in the comment section whatever you want to do.   Also, his book once again Billion: How I Became King Of The Thrill Pill Cult is available wherever books are found and on Audible. And additionally, if you're interested in that course, reach out to him by email, that email is going to be darkzess@gmail.com and to learn more about his course, you can go to www.fbasellercourse.com FBA of course standing for Fulfillment by Amazon.   Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Shaahin Uses   When asked about a quote or saying that he tends to revert to, Shaahin shared that he's got two going through his head. His intuition tells me go this one.   Why do angels fly? Because they take themselves lightly. “Seriousness is a disease.” And he's noticed Yanique laughed a lot during this show and you laugh and you smile, and that's great.   Well, we all have to remember, this is not serious and business is not serious. Customer service is not serious, none of this is serious. Seriousness is a disease of the ego, so when you get that angry customer on the other end of the phone, when you get that disgruntled employee, when you get that person who you have to deal with, remember to smile. And remember why angels fly.   Please connect with us on Twitter @navigatingcx and also join our Private Facebook Community – Navigating the Customer Experience and listen to our FB Lives weekly with a new guest   Grab the Freebie on Our Website – TOP 10 Online Business Resources for Small Business Owners   Links   Billion: How I Became King Of The Thrill Pill Cult by Shaahin Cheyene Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen The 80/20 Manager: The Secret to Working Less and Achieving More by Richard Koch Unreasonable Success and How to Achieve It: Unlocking the Nine Secrets of People Who Changed the World by Richard Koch Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini   The ABC's of a Fantastic Customer Experience   Do you want to pivot your online customer experience and build loyalty - get a copy of “The ABC's of a Fantastic Customer Experience.”   The ABC's of a Fantastic Customer Experience provides 26 easy to follow steps and techniques that helps your business to achieve success and build brand loyalty. In this episode of GoGreenfields, River and Terran visited Strawberry Hill Nutrition farm with their mom, Jessa Greenfield.  They all had the opportunity to sit down with Owner and Operator, Verne Fallstrom, to discuss what makes a nutrition farm different from organic farms. Strawberry Hill Nutrition Farm is really founded on the idea that healthy soil will ensure a healthy crop.  It was really incredible to learn more about what it takes to ensure a balanced base for the foods that we grow in Washington.  Verne has worked the right kind of magic, and has found that he can grow reliable produce with no pesticides or fertilizers at all.  So, the great tasting food is truly feeding our bodies in the best way.   Verne Fallstrom Verne isn't your ordinary farmer.  He has spent years studying the sciences of horticulture and cultivation.  In fact, he has nearly five decades of experience in geology, geophysics and geochemistry.  He earned his certification of Master Gardener and Master Composter, which is obvious to those who have seen Strawberry Hill Nutrition Farm.  Verne grew it from nothing and the outcome is amazing, and definitely worth a visit! Beet & Cocoa Cake Ingredients for Dough 1 3/4 cups gluten free flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 1/2 cups organic cane sugar 3 large eggs 1 cup coconut oil 1 1/2 cups cooked and pureed fresh beets (we got ours at Strawberry Hill Nutrition Farm) 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Sifted powdered sugar for sprinkling Directions Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9 by 13-inch cake pan with avocado oil to prevent sticking.  Combine flour, salt, and baking soda and set aside.  In your mixer, blend the sugar, eggs, and oil at a medium speed for approximately two minutes.  Slow the mixer speed to gently fold in the beets, melted chocolate, and vanilla. Add the dry ingredients slowly, beating consistently.  Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and place in the oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.   Let the cake sit overnight for a more intense flavor. Just before serving, sprinkle the cake with confectioners sugar. Be sure to share your outcome with us on social media! His father served as the first British Prime Minister. As an adult, he designed a picturesque summer home for himself in southwest London, which he called Strawberry Hill. Horace's little castle caused a sensation, and he opened his home to four lucky visitors each day. An 1842 admission ticket spelled out rules for tourists: The House and Garden are never shown in an evening;  and persons are desired not to bring children with them. The Gothic Revival architecture complete with a round tower was a nod to his accomplished ancestry and is gorgeous inside and out. The stained glass and the library are two favorite aspects among visitors. Horace was a hardworking writer and a serious scholar. Horace coined the word serendipity after he finally located a painting he wanted for his home. He wrote the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764), ten years later. In addition to his other works, Horace wrote The History of the Modern Taste in Gardening (1771). A fan of natural gardens, he famously observed that his garden hero William Kent was the first garden designer to “[leap] the fence, and [see] that all of nature was a garden.”  Horace immensely enjoyed his five-acre romantic garden at Strawberry Hill, which he affectionately called his “enchanted little landscape” and his “land of beauties.” In addition to a grove of lime trees, the garden featured a sizeable Rococo shell seat with a back designed to look like an enormous shell. Today the one-of-a-kind bench has been recreated, and copies are available for gardeners to place in their own gardens. The oldest tree on the grounds is called the Walpole Oak, and a servant is said to have hung himself from the tree after stealing silver.   In 2019, the first Strawberry Hill House Flower Festival offered local florists a chance to share their creations inside Horace's Gothic masterpiece. The event is now an annual celebration of flowers. Today Strawberry Hill House hosts a community garden. Rose lovers can enjoy their own nod to Horace Walpole with the bubblegum-pink David Austin rose Strawberry Hill. As for Horace, this industrious man often found inspiration in gardens, and he once wrote, One's garden... is to be nothing but riant, and the gaiety of nature. Horace was also a fan of greenhouses and, in particular, the control they afforded gardeners. In a letter to William Mason on July 6, 1777, he wrote, Don't let this horrid weather put you out of humour with your garden, though I own it is a pity we should have brought it to perfection and [then] have too bad a climate to enjoy it. It is strictly true this year, as I have often said, that ours is the most beautiful country in the world, when [it is] framed and glazed... Finally, it was Horace Walpole who wrote, When people will not weed their own minds, they are apt to be overrun by nettles.   September 23, 1861  Birth of Mary Elizabeth Coleridge (pen name Anodos), English writer, polyglot, and poet. She was the great-grandniece of the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In her poem September, she wrote, Now every day the bracken browner grows, Even the purple stars Of clematis, that shone about the bars, Grow browner; and the little autumn rose Dons, for her rosy gown, Sad weeds of brown. Now falls the eve; and ere the morning sun, Many a flower her sweet life will have lost, Slain by the bitter frost, Who slays the butterflies also, one by one, The tiny beasts That go about their business and their feasts. She also wrote an utterly charming little garden poem called Gibberish. Many a flower have I seen blossom, Many a bird for me will sing. Never heard I so sweet a singer, Never saw I so fair a thing. She is a bird, a bird that blossoms, She is a flower, a flower that sings; And I a flower when I behold her, And when I hear her, I have wings.   September 23, 1958   On this day, the Dayton Daily News (Ohio) shared a little article about an old park that had been created to teach botany students. Back in 1930, Brother William Beck, a member of the University of Dayton biology department, filled two purposes with one park. The campus green needed re-landscaping and botany classes needed nearby, well-stocked gardens to study.  [William] set to work on his project, with the aid of local nurseries, and collected over 200 varieties of plants and shrubs in the central campus park, labeling all of them with their Latin names and English derivatives. Since that time, the University of Dayton… tended such out-of-the-ordinary plants as a Logan elm (a transplanted sprout from the famous tree); a coffee tree; pyramidal oaks; black alders; and ginkgo trees, to name a few.  Brother Beck's well-worked-out plan seems to have been practically forgotten through the years. Botany classes no longer wind among the shrubbery...   September 23, 1986  On this day, Congress selected the rose as the American national flower. The Journal News (White Plains, New York) reported that, The House, brushing aside the claims of marigolds and dogwood blossoms, corn tassels and columbines, ended decades of indecision Tuesday and crowned the rose, that thorny beauty, America's national flower. The voice-vote decision... [ended] a debate over an appropriate "national floral emblem" for the United States that had flickered off and on since the late 19th century.   Unearthed Words Even now, as the graves of these women went untended and their passings unmourned, the seeds they had scattered turned the hillsides red and orange from May to September. Some called the pirates' bounty flame trees, but to us, they were known as flamboyant trees, for no one could ignore their glorious blooms, with flowers that were larger than a man's open hand. Every time I saw them, I thought of these lost women. That was what happened if you waited for love. ― Alice Hoffman, The Marriage of Opposites   Grow That Garden Library Will Bonsall's Essential Guide to Radical, Self-Reliant Gardening by Will Bonsall This book came out in 2015, and the subtitle is Innovative Techniques for Growing Vegetables, Grains, and Perennial Food Crops with Minimal Fossil Fuel and Animal Inputs. His most famous work was his collection of poems that narrate the epitaphs of a fictional town named Spoon River in The Spoon River Anthology (1915). Edgar grew up in Lewistown, Illinois, which is near an actual Spoon River. The book features an epitaph for a fictional nurseryman - a lover of trees and flowers - named Samuel Gardener, which ends with these words: Now I, an under-tenant of the earth, can see          That the branches of a tree          Spread no wider than its roots.          And how shall the soul of a man Be larger than the life he has lived? Edgar once wrote a poem about love, which began, Love is a madness, love is a fevered dream, A white soul lost in a field of scarlet flowers. His poem, Botanical Garden, is a conversation with God and ends with these words: “If it be comforting I promise you Another spring shall come." "And after that?" "Another spring - that's all I know myself, There shall be springs and springs!"   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: “For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.”

The first hate crime recorded after the 9/11 attacks in the US was against an observant American Sikh man Balbir Singh Johal. He was murdered by a man who thought his turban meant he supported the Taliban. Now Sikhs in the US and UK are concerned that the rising profile of the Taliban in Afghanistan is once again leading to abuse. We hear from the community and ask what might be done to remedy what they call "religious illiteracy". This year the UK opened its borders to people from Hong Kong in what is said to be the biggest migration here since Windrush. It's expected that between 130,000 and 300,000 will come over time. These are people who are unhappy with the path Hong Kong has taken since it was handed over to China in 1997. But key players on both sides of the argument over Democracy in Hong Kong had their roots in Christianity. William Crawley discusses this with former foreign correspondent and author of The Gate to China, Michael Sheridan. And we report on the UK's oldest synagogue, Bevis Marks and a fight against a proposal to build two tower blocks next to it. The synagogue's trustees say the proposed buildings will block almost all sunlight and change the atmosphere completely. We'll ask if we're paying enough attention to our Jewish Heritage with Professor Abigail Green, who's helping Heritage England to enrich their records with surprising Jewish connections to much-loved country houses like Strawberry Hill and Waddeson Manor. They're now inviting the public to "enrich the list" by bringing them their memories of Jewish life in important buildings: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/enrich-the-list/

He’s lived in Yarmouth Port for 48 years, and knew Herb and Helen well. They spent 40 years designing sets for the Cape Playhouse in Dennis. “And it was not uncommon for them, when the curtain would open they’d get a standing ovation and tremendous applause just from the set,” said Marchildon. The couple bought Strawberry Hill in 1973, and used their considerable talents as set designers to transform the building’s interior. Their living space was the section of

Dog lovers unite! The much-awaited Strawberry Hill Dog Park celebrates its grand opening this Saturday August 9th at 10am. In this episode, BCB host Annie Osburn talks with Dan Hamlin, park services superintendent of the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District, about this unique 2.35 acre, off-leash forest park. Completely fenced in, the park is designed for large and small dogs—and their owners—to meet and socialize with other dogs. Located in the northwest portion of Strawberry Hill Park, the new dog park features double-gated separate entries for the large and small dog areas. Inside each area is a wash and water station. The park is surrounded by a leisurely loop trail so owners can keep their feet dry, if needed. Also featured is a special area for small, shy or recuperating dogs. The park is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. Park rules and useful information are clearly posted on a kiosk inside the park. Several years in the making, the creation of the Strawberry Hill Dog Park was a group effort involving local residents, Park District board members and employees and volunteers, including members of the Dog Advisory Work Group (DAWG), the Dog Owner Education Committee, and the Dog Advisory Committee. “We've been working for the last four years to find a solution for the off-leash issue in our parks,” notes Hamlin. “We formed a committee after another round of public comments and, after looking into options for off-leash fenced in areas, the committee put together the design and construction of the park. It's open and being used now. We're holding our grand opening event this weekend to kick it off officially. Hopefully, we'll see a lot of dogs show up.” To learn more about the Strawberry Hill Dog Park, go to www.biparks.org or call 206-842-2306.   Robert Baldock started working at Yale University Press in London as a history editor in 1985. After serving as editorial director of the publisher's humanities division, and deputy m.d.,   he was promoted to Managing Director in 2004. His authors on the biography, history, politics, music and religion lists have included Roy Porter, Richard Evans and Diarmuid MacCulloch. Prior to Yale he worked at Weidenfeld & Nicolson and the Harvester Press. We talk here about his predecessor John Nicol, a brilliant editor and designer who developed Yale's art and architecture list, Nicol's triumph Life in the English Country House; about Yale's partnerships with the world's great galleries and museums, its hands-on approach to production, E.H.Gombrich's A Little History of the World (400,000 copies sold, and counting), Strawberry Hill and the Lewis Walpole Library in Connecticut, the Yale series of Younger Poets, the Annals of Communism series, and architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner's famous guides.
