Can you believe that I used to think I wasn't artistic because I didn't think I was a good enough drawer? Meanwhile, I was choreographing full scale productions at the age of 16, and spent much of my childhood as a “triple threat” - singing, dancing, and acting.  But because everyone would laugh at me during Pictionary, even as an adult, I still thought I wasn't artistic!  I went on to take my creative side to an Education Degree in Curriculum Development and Design and even now have a handful of trainings and courses through Homeschool Teaching Simplified that are just as much knowledge sharing as they are artistic expression for me.

Are Bail Reform Laws Causing Violent Crime to Go Up or Down? Feat Ken W. Good with Renaldo Mckenzie

DESCRIPTION: Attorney Ken W Good joins the show to discuss bail reform and its efficacy given the conflicting data surrounding Bail Reform and whether it is effective in minimizing recidivism and reducing crime. Some studies show that Bail Reform is effective while others suggest the opposite. Ken has been on several mainstream and independent news shows such as Fox, MSNBC, and several podcasts talking about bail reform and has his podcast exploring bail reform. Today we go toe-to-toe talking about bail reform and its efficacy. The Show was inspired by Elliott Chang of MediaVista Public Relations who helped to put the show together and provided the guest for today's show. Overview: Bail reform on violent crime in America. Some studies from advocates show that such crimes did not increase as a result of reform efforts, while other studies showed the opposite. Are any of the studies accurate? Bail reform remains a contentious subject, with significant implications for public safety and justice system equity. On the one hand, a study from California's Yolo County District Attorney's office reports alarming re-offense rates among defendants released on zero-bail, suggesting a direct link between bail reform and increased crime. According to this study, 70% of defendants released without bail reoffended, with a significant proportion committing violent crimes. Conversely, a study published May 22 by researchers at Drexel University, focusing on New Jersey's bail reform, finds no evidence that eliminating cash bail increases violence. New Jersey, one of the first states to significantly reform its bail system, has seen a reduction in pretrial detention without a corresponding rise in gun violence or other crimes. As bail reform continues to gain traction nationwide, understanding its true impact is crucial for policymakers, law enforcement, and the public. Misconceptions about bail reform could lead to misguided policies that either compromise public safety or perpetuate unnecessary incarceration. We will touch on the following points: -- The methodology and validity of the conflicting studies.-- Real-world implications of bail reform laws on public safety and recidivism.-- Comparative analysis of jurisdictions with varying bail policies.-- Policy recommendations to balance public safety with justice reform. Across the country, bail reform efforts have advanced swiftly, despite growing opposition from those concerned about public safety. The debate between advocates and opponents is intensifying, with each side firmly believing they are in the right. Meanwhile, the public is left questioning whether community safety is being compromised in a game of political maneuvering. About Ken W. She has a degree in Education and has worked with parents, children, and teachers for more than 20 years, creating curriculum, books, and programs that help them better understand and navigate early adolescence. In this episode, Larry Hagner interviews Michelle Icard about their family and their experiences in parenting. Michelle shares that she has two adult children and two dogs. The conversation also touches on their long-term marriage and recent celebration at a concert. Setbacks can lead to success. This is a concept that is explored in the podcast transcript, where the author, Michelle Icard, discusses her book "8 Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success." The conversation revolves around the idea that setbacks and failures are not necessarily negative experiences, but rather opportunities for growth and development. Michelle begins by sharing her own experience of being relationship and commitment phobic before getting married. She explains that she and her husband dated for seven years before tying the knot, which she finds amusing. This sets the stage for the discussion on setbacks and how they can shape individuals and relationships.  She reveals that she does not have a lot of frustration in her marriage and that it has been mostly easy. She attributes this to the fact that both she and her husband came into the relationship with burdens from their own childhoods and approached their marriage with loyalty and flexibility. They deeply appreciate stability, which they lacked in their upbringing. www.thedadedge.com/friday136 www.instagram.com/michelleicard linktr.ee/MichelleIcard

Good graduated from Hardin Simmons University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.  He received a Master of Education Degree in 1986 from Tarleton State University, a part of the Texas A&M System.  In 1989, he received his law degree from Texas Tech School of Law, where he was a member of the Texas Tech Law Review.  Mr. Good has argued cases before the Supreme Court of Texas and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, along with numerous courts of appeals, including the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.  He is the author of "Good's on Bail," a practice guide created for bail industry professionals.  In addition, he has written numerous articles on the subject of bail reform, including, “What Successful Bail Reform Looks Like.”  Mr. Good is married and has two daughters At the crossroads of this contentious issue are criminal justice reform advocates who contend that releasing individuals charged with a crime back into society for free, pending trial, not only promotes fairness, but also results in a decrease in crime rates. On the other side, law enforcement and victims' rights groups, alongside the bail industry, argue that releasing defendants without any accountability poses a serious threat to public safety. This polarized debate is capturing the attention of both policy-makers and the public, with both sides presenting compelling arguments and supporting studies to bolster their claims. What makes this debate particularly intriguing is the contention between the two sides regarding the interpretation of crime statistics. While criminal justice reform advocates argue that any increase in crime is a perceptual issue rather than a factual one, their opponents contend that the statistics and facts are inarguable.  The former contends that crime overall is going down across America, citing a big picture view.  Meanwhile, supporters of tougher laws are looking at specific jurisdictions where bail reform has been implemented.  They contend that violent crime specifically has increased dramatically in these regions. In a recent CNN story, the former Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism for the NYPD cited a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation of its members showed that 81 percent felt that retail crime had grown more violent from the previous year.  He also noted that retail giant Target had closed stores in New York City, Portland and Los Angeles -- all cities which had implemented some form of bail reform in recent years.Ken W. Good, a noted bail attorney and a board member of the Professional Bondsmen of Texas is available to be interviewed by you.  Good has worked closely with lawmakers and other individuals on bail matters.  He can offer his perspective on the impact that criminal justice and bail reform have had on public safety.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Keith holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Binghamton University; Master of Education Degree in Education Counseling from University of Pittsburgh; and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration and Student Affairs from The Ohio State University. Should there be  consequences for bad behavior [10:18] The importance of telling a child why this behavior is bad for them [12:54] How the drugs have changed over the years [19:36] Upcoming episode of Awkward Conversations KEY TAKEAWAYS: Kids don't look at the consequences of drug use. They don't frame it as health, wellness, or well-being. Instead, they only think about the future and need to hear why drugs harm them. Parents need to be listening and present.  A “behavior contract,” or reward and consequences, should be clear to everyone. Likewise, there should be inevitable consequences for certain behaviors.  The potency of drugs has changed.  They are more potent than they have ever been.  And the sad thing about that fact is that the wrong pill can kill.     ***DISCLAIMER***The views, information, or opinions expressed during the Awkward Conversation series are solely those of the individuals, speakers, commentators, experts, and or hosts involved and do not necessarily reflect nor represent those of the production, associates or broadcaster, or any of its employees. SHOW NOTES: Host Jodie Sweetin is joined by Amy McCarthy, Dr. Aida Balsano, Special Assistant to the Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and Robert Vincent, Associate Administrator for Alcohol Prevention and Treatment Policy at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Ultimately our goal is to help parents have “The Talk.” In this episode, we will discuss keeping the child's dignity intact while assisting them through difficult situations.  Separating what the child's behavior is and your love for the child can be hard when tempers are raging.   We will share tips on overcoming these situations and how to make “The Talk” beneficial to the child and not detrimental to your relationship.    IN THIS EPISODE: [00:00] Show excerpt  [02:25] Admitting as the parent that we are not perfect.  We make mistakes and may have made an error even in the position taken in the current conversation [06:36]Dos and Don'ts of having the conversation about substance abuse [11:53]LGBTQ children and the approach a parent takes [16:11] Anger and crisis mode versus compassion and empathy [18:24] Coming up on the next episode of Awkward Conversations   KEY TAKEAWAYS: Give your child a chance to participate in the “Talk.”  Don't direct the conversation at them but give both parent and child opportunities to voice their opinion.  There are cultural differences when there are age differences. Ensure that the child understands what you are communicating.  Don't assume you are on the same page. Don't lecture.  The goal is to keep the conversation going.  Kids will turn off a lecture. Instead, encouraging further discussion leaves them confident they can discuss anything with the parent.       ***DISCLAIMER***The views, information, or opinions expressed during the Awkward Conversation series are solely those of the individuals, speakers, commentators, experts, and or hosts involved and do not necessarily reflect nor represent those of the production, associates or broadcaster, or any of its employees. Ultimately our goal is to help parents have “The Talk” if it hasn't happened yet, then let's be prepared…if it has, how did it go?  If you screwed it up, no worries. Let's figure out how to get it right. But, on the other hand, if you feel it went well, take this as a reminder that the talk is not a one-off, let's figure out what's next in this constant battle to keep those we love more than life itself safe!     In this episode, we will discuss the When and How's of talking with our kids about drugs and making smart choices.  IN THIS EPISODE: [00:00] Role play of child questioning the use of alcohol with parents [02:45] At what age should we have the “talk” regarding drugs and alcohol [04:18] Making the “talk” an opportunity rather than a conversation I “have” to have with my child [08:41] The research has shown kids want to have these conversations [11:50] Encouragement goes a long way [20:09] How to overcome the fear of having hard talks with your child   KEY TAKEAWAYS: The ideal conversation you can have with your child is non-threatening and non-confrontational. A parent's approach when discussing complex subjects with a child makes an enormous difference. It is ok to have quiet moments during talks with your kids.  Often both parties need time to reflect on what was said.  It is also ok as a parent not to have all the answers. Focus on the positive things in your child's life. Then, when it comes to young teens, ask lots of questions and be supportive as they try to find out who they are. ***DISCLAIMER***The views, information, or opinions expressed during the Awkward Conversation series are solely those of the individuals, speakers, commentators, experts, and or hosts involved and do not necessarily reflect nor represent those of the production, associates or broadcaster, or any of its employees.
