She wanted to do something similar to Project Semicolon, but geared toward anyone who has struggled with an eating disorder, body dysmorphia, or body image issues. Instead of a semicolon, she is inviting people to get a tattoo of a tooth. As people see the tooth, they will be reminded of what they have overcome and that there is a community of people with similar stories, cheering each other on. officialmagdalenerose.com @officialmagdalenerose christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys

I know little actions can make a big difference…what little action will you take today?Speaking of little actions. Today I am going to be talking about a little punctuation mark and how one person gave meaning to that mark it in such a profound way that it has resonated with people all over the world, including me. Even after death of founder, Amy Bleuel in 2017, this symbol continues to bring hope to millions of people. The semicolon has become the universal logo for mental health and suicide prevention. Bleuel came up with the idea for the project in April 2013 when she urged those affected by mental illness to draw a semicolon on their wrist and post a photo on social media. The punctuation symbolizes a story that is not finished.“A semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to,” Bleuel said on her website. “The author is you and the sentence is your life.”I always say, “Be the hero of your own story.” IN episode 13, which I have included in the show notes I go into a lot of detail about being the author, the director, the producer and the lead actor of your own story. I think this is why Amy's idea of using the semicolon to represent hope resonates so strongly with me.Monday Mindset With Isha Warriors: Be Your Own Hero Episode #13Today I wanted to talk about Project Semicolon because my podast audience is world wide and so is this organizztion. Nadine Crocker survived a suicide attempt when she was 23 years old. After leaving home at 16 to pursue a career in front of the camera, maybe she thought she could leave the intense feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety back in Fresno. Also, really pretty and talented people aren't supposed to have those kinds of feelings, are they? Well, they do and Nadine wasn't immune to the feelings that run through her family. She wrote, directed, produced, and starred in Continue as a gift to the world to help us all have better conversations about mental health. Most working actors will tell you that overnight success is a myth. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule, but there's a lot of rejection that comes when seeking an on-screen career. Authors tell me the same thing—many of us can line our walls with rejection letters from agents we've queried over the years. Just like there are few overnight successes, depression and anxiety are slow burns that, for some, eventually may lead to suicidal ideation, attempts, and, for too many, death. Those of us who have experienced these emotions, or who have loved ones who live with them, know that we all need to do a better job at recognizing mental health issues, addressing them, and loving those who experience them. If you look closely at the cover art for the film, you will notice that the title is spelled Cont;nue, with a semicolon replacing the letter i. A friend of mine had to educate me on the significance behind this. She pointed me to a website for Project Semicolon whose late founder, Amy Bleuel, explained, “A semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.” There is a tragic beauty to that sentiment; tragic that it had to be written at all but beautiful because the second chance/hope it implies. I know that you will enjoy my interview with Nadine, which is certainly much more upbeat than the subject matter we discussed. She's an amazing person with a light that comes through in her voice. My only regret is not asking her if she was familiar with the 1986 mini series Fresno which took place in her hometown! Think Dallas but about raisins instead of oil. Please visit https://www.continuethefilm.com/ for more information about Nadine and the film. Follow Nadine on social @nadinecrocker. Okay, recently I’ve been working on a lot of people’s stories that are fantastic except for one thing—one easily fixable thing—they have semicolons everywhere. The semicolon is that little bit of punctuation that looks like there’s a comma on the bottom and a period topping it. And judging from people’s use of it? It’s an addictive, sexy beast. Most people think they understand the semicolon. It’s a period topping a comma, right? You use it to do something or um … yeah …? Here’s the thing, a semicolon is a divider. It’s like a comma and a period that way, but it’s not. It creates a different length of the pause for the reader between the words that it divides. Yes! There are different levels of pause. Here check it out. We’ll do it with three sentences. The first is a comma, but it will be a minimal pause. Shaun wanted to talk about naughty things, but Carrie was not going to let him do that today. Here is that same sentiment but with a medium-weight pause. Shaun wanted to talk about naughty things; Carrie was not going to let him do that today. Here is the same sentiment with the pause heavyweight fighter, the period. Shaun wanted to talk about naughty things. Carrie was not going to let him do that today. Your punctuation choice controls the pacing of your paragraph and sentence and if you put 18 of them in one paragraph? You’re going to slow down the pace of your story and also make readers get crinkly noses and hate you. So how do you use semicolons? There are three major ways to use this sexy beast. One. To connect a certain kind of thing. Semicolons connect two independent clauses. You know something is an independent clause if it can stand alone as it’s very own sentence. It’s like using the conjunction and between two independent clauses to show they are really related. Shaun is wearing big boy pants; he has been for forty-five years. To read the rest of our notes (which won't fit here), check out our website here. WRITING TIP OF THE POD So there you go. Don’t put semicolons everywhere because that’s a flag to agents, editors or readers. Use them when you need to because they can really help for clarity in lists, but remember too much of a good thing is a bad thing in writing. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Embrace the semicolon. You can change direction in your life, lean into the pause, but not into the end. Check out Project Semicolon and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255). RANDOM THOUGHTS In our random thoughts section at the beginning of the podcast, we talk about the people in South Carolina filming their procreation acts everywhere and wonder why there is no Maine Man when there are so many Florida Men. SHOUT OUT! The music we’ve clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License. Here’s a link to that and the artist’s website. To separate things in a list (sometimes). If you’ve got a weird list with lots of internal punctuation, then you can start that list off with a semicolon. Here’s an example. My wife had a list of things that she wanted me to accomplish that day and it included taking out the trash; going into the basement to look at the copper pipes which, by the way, are boring to look at and are not linking; and singing—I’m a horrible singer, by the way—a whole mess of show tunes and not the ones from Hamilton for some reason. Three. Conjunctive adjective moments These are tricky beasts, but mostly happen with these words when they join two independent clauses. The words are: moreover, nevertheless, however, otherwise, therefore, then, finally, likewise, consequently. Here’s a quick example. Shaun had been told that he should definitely not fart in the bed at night; however, Shaun decided that this household rule was absolutely unfair. WRITING TIP OF THE POD So there you go. Who is this artist and what is this song? It’s “Summer Spliff” by Broke For Free. HELP US AND DO AN AWESOME GOOD DEED Thanks to all of you who keep listening to our weirdness on the DOGS ARE SMARTER THAN PEOPLE podcast as we talk about random thoughts, writing advice and life tips. We’re sorry we laugh so much… sort of. Please share it and subscribe if you can. Please rate and like us if you are feeling kind, because it matters somehow. There’s a new episode every Tuesday! TRIGGER WARNING - THIS EPISODE CONTAINS SUICIDE CONTENT, PLEASE BE ADVISED BEFORE LISTENING. As is often the case, my desire to help others and bring goodness into this world has resulted in bringing my own personal growth along the way. I started this podcast in May of 2020 and I've learned so much in these short months...not just about social justice, mindfulnes, and about others...but also alot about myself. In light of this week (Oct 4-10) being National Mental Illness Awareness Week and last month being National Suicide Prevention month I wanted to touch on a project & topic that is deeply personal to me and sensitive. In this episode I share more information about the Project Semicolon and some great resources from their site. I also share the helpline for NAMI (1-800-950-6264), which is available M-F 10a-6p ET. There is also a confidential crisis counseling number you can text...if in crisis text "NAMI" to 741741 at anytime 24/7. You can visit their website here for more resources & information.I do decide to get personal and share my own survival story. It was 23 years ago that I tried to take my own life. My hope is that by recovering out loud others won't suffer in silence. Remember, you are not alone, and your story doesn't have to be over. Intro You’ve probably heard it said that “running is therapy.” Though we push back HARD against that idea, therapy is our therapy and nothing else comes close, we can see where this comes from. We see our running buddies every Saturday and rarely socialize in between. Most of my running friends have never met my colleagues, my coworkers, my spouse or my friends outside the running community. They exist totally separately. I tell you that to tell you THIS: conversations can get DEEP on long runs. The lack of connection to the rest of our lives means we can be more ourselves, speak more freely, talk more openly. It is a safe place to ask dangerous questions. What is said on a run, stays on a run...so we thought it would be fun to host some of these free, TMI conversations on the podcast, covering topics as well as details that wouldn’t be appropriate to share anywhere else. We are kicking off this series with one of our Sponsored Athletes, who also happens to be my running buddy, Kade, who is 9 months into his gender transition. It won’t take long to see why we’re friends- we are both loud, proud, and outspoken AF. When Kade posted about his new appendage arriving in the mail, my clients had QUESTIONS. Then, I realized I had questions, too; we hadn’t run together in awhile so we hadn’t yet a direct conversation about his transition. Kade, amazingly, agreed to have that conversation on our podcast. Come on now, you KNOW you’re curious! Get ready to be a fly on the wall for this amazing conversation where we learn everything I’ve ever wanted to know about Kade’s transition, questions I would only ever ask him on a run; which frankly is the only time and place for my totally ignorant and taboo questions, like, “do you ACTUALLY have a D^ck in a box?” and “is it like...a neuticle?” Note: We want to be exceptionally clear: the purpose of this podcast isn’t shock value, but there will be a lot of talk about anatomy. We are not exploiting Kade to expand our audience, we are trying to draw our audience closer to one of our Sponsored Athletes. All of the questions have been filtered by the team, and I’m proud to say nothing really needed to be edited, softened or changed. We have a really amazing community, and I’m proud that Kade is a part of it. Questions from MK OH MY GOD YOU ARE GONNA HAVE A PEE PIPE! So, it’s hard to know where to start- because I still fumble when I try to talk about us in the past tense! Like, “you aren’t dead, but you’re kinda like Voldemort! I can’t say your old name! When I slip, and we both know I do, does it hurt your feelings or make you not want to talk to me? So, is it like “deadnaming”? Can you give us a brief rundown on you, then tell us how would you describe yourself at the time we met? You’re the most confident human either of us have known, so this didn’t make sense to us, it really surprised us. To be clear: we love you and support you 100%, we just didn’t see this coming. Was it just us? Have others been surprised, or admitted they were surprised? Tell us a bit about your gender journey (is that how we describe it?) Because when we met, you struck me as SO sure of yourself. I realize the parts of you that I LOVE won’t be affected by the transition, how do you feel about the parts that ARE changing? Looking back, its hard to think that wasn’t 100% you, so how are you more you, now? So, once you realized it was time to transition, what does that look like? Is there an infographic, is it case by case? How did you decide where to start and what to do? Which surgeries do you NOT want to do and why? Which surgeries are the most important and why? Your transition has prompted some DEEP conversations with my therapist! I generally speaking don’t feel safe around white men! It took FOREVER to get there with my husband. I’m still working out how your pee-pipe will change our relationship….how do you think it will change us? How is it changing your other female friendships? How is it changing your male friendships? What is your best day ever, has it come yet or when will it be? How can I, as your friend, I as the founder of a media company with a platform, and everyone listening, support you as well as the community? Questions from FPP Clients Did MK pressure you into this? Why did you say yes, did you feel like you could say no? How has FPP made you feel #coachedandloved? Has running helped through your transition? You post a LOT about your t-shots. How do those feel, and what’s the recovery like? (separate, similar question): my son has type1 diabetes and has to give himself injections, is this anything like that? Are you injecting into your muscles or do you have to find a vein and change location each time? can Kade recall any reactions to his transition that were well-intended, but hurt his feelings? Or can good intentions make up for a stumble? Kade we greatly appreciate your openness about your experiences. It seems like people have a wide range of comfort levels with what they are willing to discuss. How is the best way to determine what’s appropriate to talk about with people in our social circle who may be transitioning. I cannot wait to hear more from Kade! I think it's so important to hear other perspectives. My question is what are the phases of transition and what happens during each phase. I'm hoping to better understand the journey and the struggles at each phase (I'm assuming each phase has a different struggle but could be wrong!) And what I could do to help support someone who is struggling! Thank you Kade for being so open and honest for us A lot of emphasis is put in the media on labels and pronouns. When we meet someone who we aren’t sure whether they are a male or female how is the best way to handle this respectfully if we are in a situation where typically a label or pronoun would be used. What’s the difference between gender fluid, gender non conforming, and transgendered?? How is this different from being a male or female who prefers things that might not be typical in the cultural archetype (I.e tomboy or boy who dances or does flag team?) How does Kade identify his sexuality currently and did this change when he began to transition. How does dating work as person who is transgendered. Do you tell potential dates that you are transgendered before you have a date, on the first date, etc? Kade said his appendage came in the mail (I.e prosthetic penis), will it work?? I mentioned this upcoming podcast to my neighbors because to them there is nothing off limits in any conversation and I thought they would have some good questions...and they did! I know Kade is having his top surgery, but they were interested in learning more about bottom surgery if Kade can give more information on it. Are you sure you want a penis as a runner?? I mean there jock rot and ball chafe, wearing cups, why would you want that mess? Given that you can’t change the underlying chromosomes that caused you to be born with female anatomy, do you think changing the outward appearance of your anatomy will clear your gender discomfort or do you think you will have feeling of discomfort even though you are living as a male? There seems to be some debate about whether health insurance should cover transition surgeries as a necessary medical procedure or if it is self covered as a cosmetic procedure. Are your surgeries covered and could you speak to why or why not they should be covered. Follow up - from my reading some people say that the procedures should be covered because the surgery will treat the extreme psychological discomfort that having the opposite sex parts causes to a person who is transgendered has. How is this discomfort different or more valid that the extreme discomfort caused by a biological woman who wants breast implants because her AAA breast’s cause her to feel not like a woman or someone who has extreme discomfort of because of other body features, birth marks, etc? Does Kade have any advice for parents raising children in our very gendered society? 100% of the proceeds from our Pride line will benefit Project Semicolon, the organization that supported our Sponsored Athlete Kade Schuldt.

Our topic tonight is another follow-up to last time's follow-up show relating to Ep. 1, on Musicians and Suicide, as well as Ep. 9 (Holiday Depression), Ep 16 (Artistic Mental Pathologies), and Episode 21 (General Suicide & Depression). Tonight's topic is focusing on suicide generally (as opposed to, within the music community,) but in a lot more detail. We will pick back up where we left off in discussions from the previous show two weeks ago. Tonight, we'd like to talk about Chris Cornell's suicide, The Baker Act laws, Project Semicolon, and the Netflix TV Series “13 Reasons Why.”
This is the fourth episode of our Mental Health Matters series with Sean Hagey. In this episode, Sean talks about the public perception of mental illness, within health care professions and outside of health care. If you haven't listened to the first three episodes, then check them out. In the first episode, Sean begins his story, sharing powerful experiences throughout his life. In the second episode, Sean talks about treatment, coping mechanisms, and progress despite challenging times. In the third episode, we talk about the interplay between mental health and his relationships with friends and family. Sean approached the Voice of the Patient with the idea for this series and has asked that we help to eradicate mental health stigma. We believe that the stigma cannot be erased without gaining a level of comfort with our own personal discomfort. Sean wants to tell his story, and he wants us to ask all of the necessary questions to bring understanding of patients with mental illness or symptoms of mental illness. Sean Hagey is a home health physical therapist assistant in Kansas City, MO, and is the creator of GetPT1st. He recently started a new advocacy program for mental health, Mental Health Matters, which you can follow on Twitter @HopeForMH. You can follow Sean on Twitter @SeanHagey. Sean has also written several powerful articles on The Mighty. Check out Project Semicolon and To Write Love on Her Arms. If you have a story to tell as a patient, provider, or both, then contact Zach Stearns on Twitter @zachrstearns or Dave Reed @DReedPT. we have crossroads in life, and sometimes the path we take will dictate the way how the rest of our life flows. today wes and ryan spoke with amy bleuel, founder of project semicolon on the importance of choice. you are choosing to pause and state that your story isn't over yet; you're continuing on. when we make the choice to help others instead of just focusing on ourselves, we find a bigger purpose. we find love. when we create tangible reminders, we find power in what we are capable of as we shift self-destructive patterns to a simplicity of helping others. it's the ultimate hope that if they can push on, so can i; some of the experiences we face are preparing us for something greater later on. this forms a pay it forward mentality to help others as they have helped you because you know that there is something better coming up. links to check out: project semicolon about amy bleuel amy clover, A HUMAN PROJECT podcast about how it's ok to ask for help google images of ; why faith-based? elizabeth gilbert, ted talk on creative genius modules from superhuman.life
