In a matter of months, his account drained from $15 million to $143. Depressed and on the floor, James realized that today's standard view of success comes with conditions and the only way to be truly successful and fulfilled is to “Choose Yourself.” Now, James Altucher is a bestselling author, successful entrepreneur, angel investor, chess master, and host of The James Altucher Show podcast. In this interview, we also discuss:  • How to get out of your own way and prevent the same failures from happening again  • The psychological effects of our improved emotional, spiritual and physical health • How comedy and writing have transferrable skills We also discuss:  • An experiment that he did with 50 Shades of Grey called “How to satisfy a billionaire” • Our shared experience of minimalism/buying/purging and why you should never have a mortgage • Why the flow state is necessary to be a good writer  • The deprogramming that's necessary as an entrepreneur  • The benefits of having a traditional publisher vs. self-publishing  Towards the end of this interview, we talk about the brand safety of working with a mainstream publisher - which is something that I'm shooting for right now! The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2019 29:31

On my daily tech podcast, I enjoy exploring how technology is transforming businesses, reshaping industries, and even changing lives. Today's guest is my good friend Sarah Elkins who I met in Denver at her No Longer Virtual conference. One of the reasons I invited Sarah back onto the podcast today is to share how she is leveraging technology to transform both her life and business. Using tech to tear down the barriers between online and offline After supporting and receiving support from online connections throughout the world, Sarah found herself wanting to connect with people beyond the keyboard. What if you could leverage your incredible online professional network to improve your real life, face-to-face business, and community? The result was her online connections flying from all over the world to meet in a room in Atlanta, Denver, and next year, Chicago. As someone that also believes in connecting with listeners, guests in real life too, I will also be connecting with her beyond the keyboard in Chicago in 2020. Using tech to launch a podcast Your stories don't define you, but how you tell them will. If relationships are the key to happiness, communication is the doorway, and communication is most engaging when we use stories as our foundation. In Sarah's podcast series, you'll hear personal stories of professionals who have identified pivot points that shaped their careers. These stories will resonate with you, you'll nod your head in understanding, and then we'll dig into the lessons from each of those situations. When she is working with clients, she reminds them to listen for understanding, not to respond. During her podcast, she asks that you listen to consider your related stories and to listen and consider which stories in your life might have similarly impacted you. Using tech to publish a book Sarah then set out to crowdfund her new book "Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will" using a platform called Publishizer. In the book, Sarah will help readers understand the stories we tell and why. The intention of this book is to improve self-reflection and improve relationships as a result. In today's podcast, I learn more about how Sarah once again turned to technology and the online community to bring her book to life using Publishizer. We also disucss how the crowdfunding platform matches authors with publishers. Authors write proposals, readers pre-order copies, and publishers express interest to contact authors. Publishizer queries publishers based on pre-orders milestones at the end of the campaign. The author receives a range of offers and selects the best one. About Sarah Sarah is a keynote speaker, Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, and has been hosting a successful podcast for nearly two years. Her keynote and coaching clients are diverse, including science and higher education non-profits, medical professionals, startup teams, and local, state, and Federal agencies. She is described as "down to Earth" and as having a "practical approach to stories as a communication tool." Sarah shares how she has leveraged technology to launch her own conference, podcast, and book. But, all with the same goal in mind, using technology to bring us all closer together.

Today, I'm going to tell you about my latest book project: Experience: the Revolution. This will be my second book and the pre-sale campaign is on Publishizer. My first book, Superconductors, was also launched through Publishizer, a crowdfunding literary agency. Experience the Revolution is about leadership lessons taken from transformative experiences. I was encouraged by one of my coaches that I need to be fighting for something in this book. The things I'm fighting for are threefold: the need to build leadership qualities through lived experience; the need to embrace our uniqueness and unconventional self-actualization process; and the need for a new breed of leadership that is going to solve humanity's greatest problems. This book is thus about how we can become the new leader. I have been experimenting with these areas in my own life through traveling around the world, doing psychedelics, week-long fasts, meditation, yoga, silent retreats, visiting remote tribes, vision quests, and festivals. There are so many people like me who are unsure how to effect the causes that are important to them. It will also be about empowering people who have had transformative experiences to translate those experiences into leadership skills. I would really like to create this as a movement, a place where we can all share our stories of transformation. I will then look at all this information as a large data set to try to understand this nascent cultural movement. I will also look at how people are going through their heroes' journeys, their transformative experiences, and how these journeys and experiences impact culture and the economy. I think the most important piece of this book, now more than ever, is to encourage people to go out, to live phenomenal experiences, and to delve into what these experiences can teach us about ourselves, especially as technology makes it ever easier to stay secluded and sheltered within the walls of ours homes. We are going to use content from many of this podcast's interviews for the book and a research team will also be assisting. I really expect and hope that this will be a globally influential book. If this sounds like something you're interested in, if you've had a transformative experience, if you want to be a leader, or if you want to learn how to choose experiences which will help you develop as a leader, I would love for you to check out the book. Your pre-orders on Publishizer will help Experience the Revolution get picked up by a major publisher and insure its success. This book is nexus linking my many interests; it will bring together interviews from my podcast, act as a sort of sequel to my last book, and explore careers and leaderships in the future. I hope that you will be as interested to read it as I am to write it. I am so excited to create this movement so we can be effective leaders and tackle humanity's  greatest challenges.

This is a quick run-through of my journey to become a digital nomad - that is, a rundown of all the businesses I have had that have let me travel the world and create freedom in my lifestyle. I often talk about being a digital nomad when asked to speak publicly or when presenting workshops or keynote speeches. Afterwards, people often come up to ask how I did it - how I became a digital nomad. But really, until you do it, you can't know what it is going to be like. It's different for me than for anyone else. When I talk about being a digital nomad, you don't hear about the boring things that go on behind the scenes; the endless following-up with prospective clients, business partners, and sponsors, the ceaseless efforts to try to make something happen, the thousands of hours of work that go on at home - unobserved, the head-banging frustration to figure things out, obsessing over whether something should be done this way or that, and the painstakingly small, repetitive actions that must be performed to insure success. These behind the scenes hours don't make for compelling stories, but know that every entrepreneur has to put in this time. My journey to become a digital nomad started with the desire to be an entrepreneur. Although I was interested in full-time travelling eventually, I didn't let the daunting nature of this goal stand in my way. I just started with a coaching business. As a professional cyclist, I taught younger cyclists how to go pro. I trained them to become better athletes and to be better racers. I had clients and I was charging about $250 a month. When I decided to leave grad school and go abroad, I looked towards Asia and South America, places where you can live for about a thousand dollars a month. So, I needed four clients to equal my cost of living. When I had that, I basically knew that I could travel indefinitely. That gave me the confidence to go to Vietnam, my first country. There was a time when these coaching clients graduated and moved on. I didn't have clients or income for some time and that was when I started the Art of Adventure podcast. Just like anything where you expect to get rich quick, podcasting was not the scheme I expected it to be. Art of Adventure is largely a free show but lots of people kept asking me how to start a podcast. They asked for help, walk-throughs, and advice. So, I started hosting podcast launch groups where people would come over to my house to practice interviewing and to learn how to set up a podcast. I helped a lot of people by podcast coaching and would make about $2000 per month. At the same time, I was giving a lot of talks. I was speaking for free because I knew that I wanted to be on stage. Eventually I realized that, with everything I had learned from podcasting and all the books I had been reading, I could teach this stuff and get paid to speak. Then on Episodes 48 and 49 of the Art of Adventure podcast, I had David Wood as a guest and he talked about how easy it is to start a coaching practice. I ended up hiring him to teach me how to become a coach and how to coach more broadly about business and life. And so, that's how the coaching branch of my business was born - an idea from a guest on the podcast! With that said, I've taken so many ideas from guests on the podcast. A later guest suggested that I should write a book. Eventually I would turn content from the interviews I had done for the podcast into my book, Superconductors. I launched it as a crowdfunding campaign on Publishizer, who is now a sponsor of the Art of Adventure podcast. The book did well enough in its crowdfunding campaign, that I was able to sign a publishing contract and then spend two years writing the book. Before writing the book, I also started running Adventure Quest trips. The first AdventureQuest was to Bali to test the idea of bringing entrepreneurs into the wilderness where they would receive both business- and life-coaching,

For too long I sat on the edge of my seat teasing myself with my deepest dreams and desires yet I did nothing about it.  I had to wake up!  I don't want to sleep through this existence. I don't want to live with regret.  In this book I share you my story. My transformational journey. In it I provide the blueprint and the tools that you can use to map out and live your Ultimate Life. I will show you how to define your WHY – or purpose. I will guide you in the creation of your Life Compass. I will explain how you can reconnect to the fundamental Life Principles. I will then highlight how to use these tools, so you can navigate your life towards greater freedom, fulfilment and happiness. The book goes up for pre-order from July the 15th until August the 15th on Publishizer. Please help me out and pre-order a copy! Preorder your copy here.  Once published, all proceeds from book sales will go towards the Green Field Kids School Project in Uganda. How to Write and Publish a Book: How Superconductors got Published

Superconductors is coming out July 2018 and I wanted share with you the two-year process that led to this book being published. I'll walk you through the development and writing process of the book up until launch, highlighting the key points along the way.  This is my first solo book, and first time working with the publishing industry, so this is just one example of how the process might work for you if you want to publish a book. Timeline: In his podcast interview, JG Francouer suggests I have enough material for a book from the Art of Adventure podcast. August, 2016 In September, 2016 I talked with Guy Vincent, founder of Publishizer, who suggested I run a book crowdfunding campaign on the Publishizer platform. Lee Constantine of Publishizer helps me create the Conductors campaign (the title was later changed to Superconductors) and book proposal. I used 99 designs to get a professional cover design to help make the project gain traction. In October, 2016 I ran the campaign and received 255 preorders for the book. Publishizer had set a target of 250 preorders - which they believed would increase the interest from publishers, and it did, even before the campaign was halfway over. I had more than 100 preorders by the end of the first day, which created lots of momentum for the campaign. To get the 255 preorders I relied on personal connections to buy 1-5 copies of the book and business to order the book in bulk as a sponsor, in exchange for rewards packages. After the campaign, the book was pitched to over 50 publishers, and 18 expressed interest in publishing the book. Publishizer acted like a book agent (they took a larger % fee from the crowdfunding than other platforms).  I would recommend any author to get an agent if they are going with the traditional publishing route - you want as much insider help as you can get, to keep things straightforward. After talking with several publishers, I decided to go with a traditional publisher, Kogan Page, to add credibility to the project and get the book into book stores around the world. The title of the book was changed to Superconductors: Revolutionize Your Career and Make Big Things Happen. In February, 2017, I signed a contract to deliver the book by the end of 2017.  I requested a small advance, as I would be purchasing copies of the book to send to the supporters of the Publishizer campaign. I was assigned an editor, and we set out a writing schedule for the book - to deliver two chapters a month, starting in April 2017. This is where things got messy for me - I outlined all the chapters and was writing each chapter a bit at a time.  By the time the first chapter was due, I had written 25% or so of each chapter. From June, 2017 forward, I was "behind schedule" for sending in complete first drafts.  I kept holding onto the chapters to make them better.  And basically even after many rounds of edits, I know they could be better still. I was probably writing about 20 hours/week until August 2017, then up to 40 hours/week until the final chapter was submitted (three months late) in February. Kogan page redesigned the cover of the book to fit more in line with their style, but also using the bold colors of the original cover design. To do additional research for Superconductors, I booked key guests onto the podcast, such as Travis Sheridan, Jeff Shapiro, and Jon Levy Each chapter went through 3 rounds of back and forth edits with the main editor and then was proofed by multiple line editors after submission. There ended up being more than 400 references for the book - podcast interviews, books, journal articles, and other publications. One time consuming part of the writing was making sure these idea were properly cited instead of just told as a truth because I knew them.  Sometimes this meant going back to try to figure out where I had learned something years before. After the book was submitted, edited,

This week Greta Solomon and I discuss creative writing, getting still to create magic and staying true to yourself.  Greta is an author, writing coach and speaker.  Greta explains how she followed the traditional route of going to university, studying, gaining a qualification then seeking employment.  However Greta soon realised that following a tradition that was not her own did not support her quest for fulfilment and being a true expression of herself.  Rather than try to conform Greta decided to live and work on her own terms.   Greta runs workshops in writing for business, creative self expression and wellness.  She speaks at universities, conferences and corporate events.  Greta writes for print and online publications as well as being an author of two books!   Greta’s latest book, “Heart Soul & Sass” is available for pre-order on Publishizer.     “Heart Soul & Sass is about using the power of writing to create a fulfilling life. One that doesn’t just look good – but feels good”.   I strongly urge you to pre-order Heart Soul & Sass if you have dreams of writing a self help or ‘how to’ style book.  You can do so here.  There are various pre-order options available which include the book and some add ons such as access to an online workshop or a private coaching session Greta depending on the option you choose.  This pre-order campaign is time sensitive, you only have until 16/05/18 so don’t delay.   You can keep up to date with Greta via her website or instagram.   We can continue the conversation on twitter and instagram using the hashtags #livethreesixty #everydayjoy.   Also…. “Just write your book, put it out there, and let nature take its course.” – Guy Vincent Today's guest on the Art of Adventure podcast is someone who left everything at home - his job, his friends and his girlfriend to embark on a quest to find what makes his life more meaningful and complete. Luckily, he was able to find everything he was looking for. Guy Vincent is the founder and CEO of Publishizer, a crowd-publishing platform that connects authors with publishers. It allows authors to write proposals and launch pre-order campaigns to be discovered by potential readers and publishers. Publishizer helps authors bring their books out into the world while also assisting publishers who are hunting for new talents. They are the first company to do this. Before staring out the company, Guy also was an author. He himself learned how difficult it is to write a book and have it published. With this in mind, he figured that this crowd-funding platform is the solution to provide an avenue for writers and publishers to connect. I used Publishizer for my own book Superconductors, and it was picked up for traditional publishing by Kogan Page. Conversations with Phil Gerbyshak - Aligning your mindset, skill set and tool set for peak performance

Lee Constantine has an interesting model with Publishizer: It's one part Kickstarter, one part independent publisher, and all parts making sure you can actually sell your book before you publish it. I normally don't do episodes where I just talk about a product or service, but this is special. If you are thinking about self publishing or even traditional publishing your book, check these guys out first. And no, I don't get anything from sharing this. Except for I get to be really happy if this helps you make more money (or not lose money) publishing your book.  I asked Lee about how this got started, what the downsides might be, and more about how this works. I left this interview very impressed, to say the least, and I am seriously considering using this for a future book project. 3 Steps - How Publishizer Works Submit a 1000 word proposal A book proposal explains your book to readers and publishers. Be guided step-by-step through using our book proposal template. Launch a 45 day pre-orders campaign Needless to say, more pre-orders results in more interested publishers! At 500 pre-orders, your proposal is queried to traditional publishers. Reply to interested publishers directly Interested publishers message you, and you’ll receive a range of offers. Besides having cool hair, Guy is an extraordinary gentleman that is passionate about making change. Some may call him a friend, others may call him family, but I would like to classify Guy as a nomad. This young man has traveled the world and has reaped the benefits of learning from different cultures. Now, some people can say in confidence that they are focused individuals, but Guy on the other hand is on a completely different level. Guy, is laser focused on developing a better product for his company Publishizer. Originally from Australia, currently living in California (UPDATE: Guy is currently living in Bali), Guy has been working on Publishizer for 2 years now. Publishizer is a crowdfunding platform for authors and publishers. As of December 2015, Publishizer has funded $430,000+ in author earnings. Publishizer core mission is to connect authors to publishers. It has also become the first ever crowd publishing website. Get Started! There isn't a perfect idea! Guy mentions that you need to get started. Simple as that. Find engineers, talk to people, find co-founders if you need to, but just get something out there. Create an MVP and put yourself on the map. No matter what it takes to do so. Focus On Selling Something If you cant sell something, then you won't be able to get feedback on the product itself. Selling doesn't have to be the exchange of money. It could be as simple as having people sign up, but by focusing on selling, you'll be able to ask for feedback. That way, you can create a better product! Once you try to actively sell something to someone, you figure out quickly if you're creating something that has value. If its not valuable you'll know you have to change your direction. It doesn't necessarily have to be a drastic change in direction, but a slight change none the less. Keep At It When Guy was creating Publishizer, he had a couple of close calls and ended up having that feeling of giving up. Like most entrepreneurs, it's normal. But what Guy suggests is to not make any drastic decisions that could potentially derail your company, or also change the lives of those around you. Guy suggests that if you have the ability to do so. take some time off to clear your head. "If you have to take a week off...do it." Says Mr. Vincent. If you're at that early of a stage, it could be beneficial. "Ride through those periods of doubt and you'll find new ideas or even a different approach." Once you come back, get back into the grind and try to pump things out. My today's guest is Ryan Hanley. He helps brands and businesses find their audience, tell their story and win the battle for attention online. He is also the author of Content Warfare: How to find your audience, tell your story and win the battle for attention online. What is content marketing? Content marketing is the process of creating media in the effort to add value to an audience. About building audience It's a culture of audience building. You are never not building an audience. About your book audience You don't write a book and then go and find an audience. That would possibly be the worst possible thing you could do as an author. About time You never gonna find time. [spp-tweet "You either make time or you don't wanna write a book that badly."] Benefits of the Crowdfunding (besides the money) it validates the idea it activates the audience it is a good accountability tool Drawbacks of the crowdfunding With crowdfunding your core audience has already bought the book. So you have to sell the book twice: once to those who will fund your book and once again when it is published. Those who back up your campaign will not be part of your Amazon sales and therefore contribute to your book's bestselling rankings. Good News Ryan raised $10K with his crowdfunding campaign and it took only 147 people to fill that campaign. This means that you down need huge audience - all you need is couple of hundred people, who are willing to invest in you. Winning the Battle for Attention with Ryan Hanley How often do you find yourself competing for attention online? If you're a writer, artist, entrepreneur, or blogger, chances are a lot. It comes with the territory. There are millions of websites and our audiences' time and attention are limited. So the question is: how do you distinguish yourself from the crowd and earn that well deserved attention for your high quality content? Enter: Ryan Hanley. Ryan is the creator of ContentWarfare.com, the host of the Content Warfare Google Hangout / Live Podcast, and the founder of Hanley Media Labs. Ryan is THE leading authority on winning the war for attention online by building your brand the right way (and a person whose advice I implicitly trust - something I say about very few people). The best part: Ryan isn't keeping his genius to himself. Instead, he's  taking all the knowledge and experience he's gained over the years from building brands online and putting it into a book he's launching through a new book crowdfunding platform called Publishizer: Check out Ryan's book (appropriately titled: Content Warfare) on Publishizer here. In today's podcast, we sit down and discuss Ryan's background and how he transitioned from corporate America to online entrepreneurship; how he became a leading authority in building brands online; and his unique journey to published author. What Ryan Hanley and I talk about: Ryan's transition from accounting to online entrepreneur, Podcaster, and brand building authority What Content Warfare is all about.... How to distinguish yourself from the crowd The three ingredients for successfully capturing a segment of any market (hint: it has to do with Audience, Story, Experience) The three components of Experience: Customer Service: Good or Bad Price: Low or High Delivery: Fast or Slow Which components of experience matter and which don't (you might be surprised by this) How to tell your story so that you attract the right customers Which is the best social media platform and why (and how to implement it for your own success) Why Ryan went the crowdfunding path for his book and how crowdfunding is changing the landscape of publishing for the better Wise Words from Ryan Hanley: Attention without trust has little value.  [share]  Where once we as brands and marketers chose our audience, today our audience chooses us. [share] Where You can Find Ryan Hanley Online: Website: www.ryanhanley.com Twitter Facebook Other Resources: Publishizer.com  * * * If you enjoyed today's podcast, leave a review on iTunes here. Todays guest has an amazing tale, and one that I have read more than once, as it has the classic stumbles and falls, successes and moments of inspiration that make this guy perfect for join up dots. As a young man, our guest was always on the look out for entrepreneurial ventures. Starting with an e-book venture our guest ploughed into the online world with all the enthusiasm of someone who knew that they couldn't fail. Unfortunately their heart wasn't telling them the full story, and after an initial success the business never truly got off the ground. Was it the wrong time? Was it that the promotion was wrong? Or was it just that nobody wanted e-books? Well, it was quite certainly wasn't the last one, so where did he go wrong? Without pausing for breath, he didn't give himself a chance to dwell on it, he dusted himself down and took massive action. Leaving his apartment, quitting a relationship, quitting a job, and selling everything he owned, he bought an airline ticket to Asia and started his new life: He was 23, scared to death, but knew there was a dream he needed to find. So lets find out how that dream is getting on, as we start joining up dots with the one and only Guy Vincent.
