In a candid and insightful conversation, Equitea founder and CEO Quentin Vennie and Greg Lowe II, the founder and CEO of coconut water brand 100 Coconuts, dive into the complexities of embracing their Black identity while navigating the business world.  As part of the conversation, they discuss the dual reality of finding support and facing systemic barriers, alongside the evolving landscape of DEI initiatives. They also explore the ongoing challenges Black founders face in accessing capital and the opportunities international markets offer Black-owned brands. Greg also shares the story of securing a major partnership with Disney, highlighting how creativity, culture, and agility set his brand apart from industry giants. He and Quentin also unpack misconceptions about DEI, the long road ahead for equal opportunities, and how their respective journeys are paving the way for other Black founders in CPG. Send us a Text Message. The Forsaken.Quentin Vennie, Co-Founder of Equitea Co., wrote a searing memoir, Strong in the Broken Places. A raw story of his life growing up in the inner city of Baltimore, MD where he faced food deserts, a complicated relationship with his father who was in and out of jail, and his own addiction and multiple suicide attempts. His unexpected path out of the darkness of his life through yoga, meditation, juicing and his mom's support is a blueprint for us all as we face the mountains and the valleys that are part of living. Since our first interview three years ago, Quentin has had to face any parent's worst nightmare - the death of his 17 year old son Christian from accidentally ingesting fentanyl. In real time, Quentin is facing questions about the changeable nature of grief, anger and forgiveness. Despite major strides taken by a new generation of bold entrepreneurs and brands, Black-owned food and beverage companies still face persistent headwinds getting on the shelves of mainstream supermarkets, finding significant investment, and scaling long-term. From a consumer and an equity standpoint, this is untenable. A significant slice – 14% – of American consumers are Black. We know that there are Black founders out there but they are not necessarily making their way into our consciousness or on the radar of much of the established CPG structure.  As a resource for all founders, Taste Radio, in collaboration with Quentin Vennie, the co-founder and CEO of beverage brand Equitea, has developed a special series that highlights conversations on various aspects of the challenges felt by all entrepreneurs filtered through the experience of Black founders. We also discuss the ways that the environment has changed, and how it has not, as well as identifying resources that our founders may not yet realize exist.  In this first edition of the series, we sat down with Quentin, Partake Foods founder Denise Woodard and Ibraheem Basir, the founder of A Dozen Cousins, for a roundtable discussion that explores the foundational reasons that each started their brands, how modern Black-owned brands are extending a legacy of Black entrepreneurship, ways in which they are building their companies' culture to reflect their own, and the impact of Black-owned and ethnic-themed brands in expanding the audience for natural and organic foods. Show notes: 0:35: Quentin Vennie, Equitea; Denise Woodard, Partake Foods; Ibraheem Basir, A Dozen Cousins – Quentin discusses the origins of the special series and the goals he hopes to achieve; Ibraheem and Denise talk about their respective families history in entrepreneurship, before Quentin explains how the creation of Equitea is partly rooted in his inability to find products that represented him or his culture. Ibraheem and Denise discuss the impact of their experience in corporate CPG companies in the development of their brands; they also explain what gave investors and retailers confidence to “place a bet” on their brands. The trio also talk about how the ebb and flow in how the CPG industry supports Black founders via diversity initiatives and why Quentin was unable to benefit from an initiative intended to support BIPOC entrepreneurship. Ibraheem explains how culture influences all aspects of A Dozen Cousins; Denise talks about incorporating a holistic perspective on culture into Partake Foods; Quentin discusses how black founders in food & beverage can collectively and independently help each other be successful. Ibraheem talks about “the sticky part” of racism and how it affects fundraising; Denise highlights the challenges faced by investment funds that are focused on women- and minority-owned businesses and the trickle down effect on brands like hers; and all three founders explain what they hope to leave as a legacy. Sometimes a relative stranger, during a small collection of conversations, can make an outsized impact by suddenly awakening a light within you. If you think that sounds like hyperbole…how about I share my recent experience with this phenomenon. In the last several years, I've had a handful of beverage industry friends tell me to check out this tea-plus brand named Equitea. Admittedly, in a rushed state…I would glance at the product pages and say something relatively positive about the emerging category and/or its product composition and packaging. But it wasn't until Danny Stepper asked me to moderate a panel at The Beverage Forum that changed everything. As I'm putting together the conversation framework…I start digging deeper into Equitea because its co-founder and CEO, Quentin Vennie, was one of the panelists. This is when I learned about the founding reason for Equitea and then the more recent tragic event that evolved the brand purpose. Maybe it was partly due to the proximity of myself becoming a new father, but suddenly I felt this amplified connection to Quentin's story. Getting to know him better (on- and off-stage) became the unexpected (but in a totally good way) top highlight of mine from The Beverage Forum. And as you'll quickly notice, this recorded conversation feels like it just rolls right into it…and that's because it was a totally authentic human interaction that Grant captured after we got off stage together. While that might feel a bit different than typical story arcs in previous episodes, this whole “Pivotal segment concept” was created because I wanted to break down barriers and show the human beings that exist beyond these CPG brands. With “great products” becoming ubiquitous across the CPG industry, they must evolve into a vehicle to build rich compelling stories that create consumer connection. In this case, it's packaged tea-plus products called Equitea that exists to destigmatize mental health, expand pathways to wellness, and help make cognitive wellness-centered products more accessible and equitable. Finally, for those that want to hear more from Quentin, the accompanying Joshing Around "The Beverage Forum 2024" vlog episode (that will be uploaded to my YouTube channel very soon) should help fill that void and likely add more context to portions of this recorded conversation. Cold-Brewed Calm – Author and wellness expert Quentin Vennie, with his wife Erin, on the advice of their son's neurologist, found that green tea helped their seven-year-old boy maintain calm and focus. Diagnosed with ADHD, a condition leading to impulsive, hyperactive behavior, tea's unique combination of L-Theanine and Caffeine offered relief, but loose-leaf teas were challenging to brew and not that tasty to a pre-teen. Quentin and Erin added calming botanicals to make the tea palatable. Inspired by their success, they launched a tea venture that produced packaged teas that became a favorite of Gwyneth Paltrow, whose company goop sells the teas online.

Too often today black neighborhoods are graveyards for exploded dreams as drug addiction, poverty and low expectations take root in the people and institutions of the neighborhood. In most of the world's eyes, the souls who live in these food deserts, healthcare deserts, and educational deserts are merely statistics, not three-dimensional people with deep, real and valuable humanity. And still what remains, as Quentin details in his memoir Strong in the Broken Places, is the love of the people in the community for each other. Maya Angelou said when you learn you teach. And through his harrowing story of overcoming a prescription drug addiction and a suicide attempt in order to step into his destiny as father, healer and teacher, Quentin uses his life as a classroom. His lessons are weighty. God has a bigger plan for your life than what you can see in your current circumstances. Prayer works and prayer requires work. Surrendering is not weakness, but a necessary step of faith. And quite simply, you have to choose life. With his honest telling of his struggle through profound prescription drug and alcohol addiction, Quentin Vennie gives us soul-stirring life lessons. We can turn our traumas into our triumphs. We all have to receive forgiveness and extend it to people who hurt us, even when we don't want to. And in a world where society often strips people of humanity, when we have the courage to tell our stories to one another honestly, that's when we can feel and see each person we meet through a lens of empathy and compassion. He shares how this contributed to his anxiety and depression disorders, but by listening you’ll hear how he was able to use different modalities and paths to process and for healing himself. http://yourkickasslife.com/172

At age 27, Quentin Vennie was working out when he suddenly felt a pain in his chest, a tingly left arm and dizziness. He drove to the hospital, where a doctor diagnosed him with anxiety and gave him a prescription for lorazepam. "When you're in a vulnerable position, you turn to these people, but most doctors don't inquire. They don't ask what's really going on," he said. Quentin quickly became addicted to the lorazepam -- doubling, then tripling, his dose. After a combination of vicodin and lorazepam resulted in a collapsed lung and trip to the ER, Quentin realized his coping mechanism wasn't only ineffective, but could actually kill him. Over the next few years, Quentin began down a road of healing, starting with a daily practice of yoga, juicing, and meditation. "I didn't share anything with anyone because I didn't know if it was going to work," he said. Juicing became his "healthiest addiction," but he also cut out dairy, stopped smoking and worked towards accepting his inner demons. Today, Quentin is a writer, speaker and integrative wellness coach whose byline has appeared in Huffington Post, Mind Body Green and Positively Positive. On the Open Sky Fitness Podcast, he shares his inspiring story and the changes he's made to stop feeling anxious and start enjoying life. Listen to my conversation with New York City-based writer, wellness coach and yoga guide, Quentin Vennie. Quentin utilizes his experience in personal training, yoga and juicing to influence and transform lives. His approach is to address the obstacles occurring inside the body, allowing the external changes to occur as a direct result. In this conversation, Quentin shares his personal journey and how he used juicing, yoga and meditation to overcome his addition to prescription drugs and learn to manage his once debilitating general panic disorder. Quentin was originally diagnosed with a panic disorder at age 14, but his mother rejected the doctor’s recommendation for medication. The disorder gained new footing when he was in his mid-20’s. This time the anxiety attacks were unmanageable and, after receiving a diagnosis of generalized anxiety and general panic disorder, he accepted medication as a treatment. In addition, he experienced severe migraine, so he was prescribed a powerful narcotic for the pain. Within 8 months he realized he was addicted. His use of the anti-anxiety medication increased six times over the original amount and, after an accidental overdose of the narcotic, he made the commitment to wean himself off both  medications, but he wasn’t sure how. While searching for answers online he came across the documentaries Sick Fat and Nearly Dead and Crazy Sexy Cancer. He watched both documentaries in the same day and went out and bought a juicer that night. From there an exploration and eventual love of Yoga developed along with meditation and healthy routine of self-care. Quentin is quick to point out that he is not “cured” of the panic disorder, but he is able to manage the frequency and intensity of the attacks. He continues to learn triggers and accepts that the disorder is a part of him but does not need to limit him.
