Named after a famous fictional character, librarian Bridget Jones was raised on a remote cattle station, with only her mother's romance novels for company. Now living alone in Fremantle, Bridget is a hopeless romantic. She also believes that anyone who doesn't like reading just hasn't met the right book yet, and that connecting books to their readers is her superpower. If only her love life was that easy. When handsome Italian barista Fabio progresses from flirting with love hearts on her coffee foam to joining the book club she runs at her library, Bridget prays her romance ‘curse' won't ruin things. But it's the attention of her cranky neighbour Sully that seems to be the major obstacle in her life. Why is he going to so much effort to get under her skin? She soon discovers that not all romances start with a meet-cute, but they might just end in happily ever after…In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Rachael Johns about how our idea of libraries as dull places is now a thing of the past, how exploring relationships and friendships are at the heart of what she writes, and why romance fiction endures by changing with the times.

In Episode 6 of Season 12, I chat with Rachael Johns, best-selling author and prominent voice in contemporary relationship stories focusing on women's issues. She has coined the term 'life-lit,' delving into the intricacies of female relationships and the desire to belong. As this season focuses on stories with heart it's only fitting to talk with Rachael as she launches her latest romance novel, "Talk to the Heart". Rachael's narratives offer a joyful escape from what she would call “the depressing stuff” and she invites her readers to embrace the happiness she believes everyone deserves. But Rachael's ability to spread joy doesn't stop with her stories and whether it's her passion for all things pink or her extensive collection of earrings from independent designers, it's her style to always spread the love.

Guest host Rachael Johns chats to West Australian author Anthea Hodgson about her new release The War Nurses. Rachael is a regular guest host on Writes4Women, and a best selling author of more than 18 rural romance and women's fiction titles, her most recent being The Work Wives. Anthea grew up in the wheatbelt of WA, surrounded by paddocks, wheat, sheep and her parent's books. In a previous life she worked as a radio producer in commercial radio and at the ABC. Her first novel, The Drifter, was published in 2016, followed by The Cowgirl in 20018; both novels exploring generational farming, modern values, and themes of home and freedom from a cast of characters and countryside lovingly based on the small community of Yealering. Anthea's recent release, The War Nurses, brings the story of the 65 nurses of the Vyner Brooke, and the victims of the Bangka Island Massacre to a broader audience. She was inspired to honour her great aunt Minnie Hodgson, who died in the massacre, along with all the amazing nurses who were bombed, imprisoned, beaten and starved during WW2, and who survived, with great dignity, courage, strength and love. Rachael and Anthea are actually 'work wives'–great friends and writing colleagues and in this episode they chat about Anthea's path to publication, the blending of fact and fiction in The War Nurses and Andrea's genre hopping writing life. It's a great, fun chat between two accomplished writers which both readers and writers will love. Grab a cuppa and join Rachael and Andrea on the Writes4Women Convo Couch. An English teacher in a previous life, Rachael is now an ABIA-winning author writing across a number of genres including romance, rural romance and women's fiction – or her own preferred terminology life lit. Her recent books include The Patterson Girls, Something to Talk About,Just One Wish and Flying the Nest. Rachael is currently Australia’s leading writer of contemporary relationship stories around women’s issues. Jilted (her first rural romance) won Favourite Australian Contemporary Romance in 2012, and The Patterson Girls won the 2016 Romance Writers of Australia RUBY Award and also the 2015 Australian Book Industry Award for General Fiction. She continually places in Booktopia’s Top 50 Aussie Authors poll. Pam and Rachael have a shared mania for stocking their shelves with books on writing craft and, having compared notes about their respective writing processes, pretty much agree they don’t know what they are! All this prompted Pam to invite Rachael onto the podcast to try and pin down what her process is for getting from that first seed of an idea to the end of a first draft. So listen in while Rachael and Pam compare notes on The Convo Couch. Rachael Johns began writing as a broken hearted teen and she's now recognised as one of Australia's best-selling rural romance and life lit authors. She's also highly productive, with two books out this year and another due early in 2021. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and in today's Binge Reading episode Rachael talks about romance for women with grown up complicated lives, and why she dislikes her work being categorized as “chick lit.” Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: Writing as teenage therapy Youthful ambition to be a 'famous author'The importance of 'keeping on' with it Inventing a new sub genre - 'life-lit'The importance of having a tribe The writers she admires most Where to find Rachael Johns: Website: https://www.rachaeljohns.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RachaelJohnsRomance Twitter: https://twitter.com/RachaelJohns Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rachaeljohnsauthor/ Email: Rachaeljohns077@gmail.com What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. But now here's Rachael. Hello there Rachael and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Introducing author Rachael Johns Jenny Wheeler: But now, here's Rachael. Hello there, Rachael, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Rachael Johns: Thank you, Jenny. It's fabulous to be here. Jenny Wheeler: You're talking from Perth, aren't you? I always like to give people a sense of the geography, because there are very big distances between all of the people I talk to. You are over the other side of Australia, which is way away from us. We think of the East Coast as being almost neighbors, but you're another, I think five hours by plane across Australia, isn't it? Rachael Johns - rural romance and 'life lit' author Rachael Johns: Yes, it's five hours by plane and then another couple of hours to you over there, so we find ourselves in time difference at the moment. I love New Zealand. I am in WA, I've got family in Queenstown in New Zealand. We were going to go there this year, but unfortunately … Jenny Wheeler: It didn't work out. Are you in a suburb of Perth or are you out in the country? Rachael Johns: I was in the country until a couple of years ago. We spent the best part of 11 years in two different small rural communities – in Kojonup and Goomalling, for anyone who does know any of those places. One was down south of Perth and the other one was in the Wheat Belt. Now we're back in Perth, on the outskirts, in the Swan Valley, because after living in small country towns, I don't think I could go back completely to suburbia or city living, so the best of both worlds, hopefully at the moment. Writing as teenage therapy Jenny Wheeler: That's interesting because you are known for best-selling rural romance and I did wonder how much rural experience you had, but we'll get onto that. You started with your writing, you say on your website, at the age of 17 as therapy for a broken heart. That's amusing. I know I'm a 17-year old's broken heart can be as painful as at any age, but it's not exactly the depth of life at that point. How did it all come about? Rachael Johns: I completely agree with you. It felt like the end of the world at 17, when you break up with someone who's the love of your life, but now, almost 25 years later, I can look back and laugh at the experience. I'm glad it happened because I think I would probably be on quite a different path if it hadn't. I had always wanted to be a primary school teacher and I think I would have done that, probably would have loved it and enjoyed it. It's amazing how things turn out. Small town WA - Goomalling Tavern So what happened? I wasn't a big reader or writer at all in high school. I did reasonably well in high school English, but I didn't read books because the ones they wanted you to read...

Rachael Johns launches her latest rural romance "Something to Talk About" It’s the opposite of love at first sight…or is it? Dairy farmer Tabitha Cooper-Jones has a heart of gold, yet she’s the eternal bridesmaid. Everyone’s best mate. Despite facing some serious challenges over the years, she’s built a successful ice-cream business and cafe, she’s adored by her family and is an integral part of her hometown – there’s just one thing missing from her life. But the last thing Tab wants is a man – or worse, love – to stop her achieving her dream. In town for a temporary teaching contract, Fergus McWilliams thinks the small community of Walsh will be the perfect place to stay under the radar but he couldn’t be more wrong. Suddenly, the kids’ cricket team coached by Ferg is inundated with female supporters – single female supporters – and that’s only the beginning. The only woman who doesn’t seem to have her sights set on Ferg is Tabitha. Despite a disastrous first meeting and a visit from a past love, circumstances keep throwing them together. Neither can deny the sparks between them, but can friendship even be possible for these two strong-willed people? A moving story of overcoming obstacles and learning to love, from ABIA award-winning author Rachael Johns. Ever wondered whether you’re better to strike out on your own with your writing career, pitch directly to publishers or hire an agent? Haylee Nash, of The Nash Agency, outlines the pros and cons of each option, demystifying the publishing cycle in the process. But be warned, after listening to Nash, you’ll be hard pressed to justify not running with an expert. Think of an agent as an industry expert that has you as their primary focus in a publishing world that throws up more options every day. Besides, everyone needs a cheerleader and therapist, says Nash. In this episode we cover the following, and so much more: the benefits of editorial feedback how to pitch to publishers framing your work to sell the importance of a good bio the craft and business side of writing marketing opportunities what’s trending in 2019 managing your career Most importantly, Nash has a Writers Retreat happening at Mt Tamborine in Southeast Queensland in February, with guest tutors, Rachael Johns and Josephine Moon. You can find out more about Haylee and The Nash Agency https://www.thenashagency.com.au/ (here) and the Writers Retreat https://www.thenashagency.com.au/2018-writers-retreat (here.) Read Full Transcript Mel: Today, I have with me Haylee Nash. Welcome Hayley. Now I heard all about hayday from the beautiful Amy Seton. So of course I had to track down and bring her on to the podcast. What I hadn't realized Hayley is that you used to work at Pan Macmillan and Harlequin. You represent some of our best Australian authors, Josephine Moon, Lily Malone, Annie Seaton and Lisa Ireland to name a few. Haylee: Yes it is. I currently have 18 signed. Mel: We have our very own agent here in front of us representing both indie authors and traditionally published authors with some depth of experience. How long have you been an agent? Haylee: I'vee been an agent for two years. It's been an incredibly interesting journey but really fulfilling and very nice for my ego because it was terrifying. Haylee: Starting out on my own particularly as I have a child and a husband and we know there's bills to pay. But it's been so rewarding absolutely rewarding. Mel: I'm sitting here looking everyone at this amazingly healthy glowing woman who just got back from the gym. If there's any reason that you need an entrepreneurial life it's so that you can do what you want when you want and work until midnight every night. Haylee: That's exactly right. It's like I can so I can surf if I wanted to in the morning and be up at 6 to play Barbies with my three year old daughter, the life of a working mother. Mel: You talk about appraising manuscripts. You've got all these amazing authors on your books at the moment. Being represented by an agent has actually changed over the years hasn't it? Haylee: Yes. I think there's a lot of people now who are represented who have been published. I don't have the exact percentages on me but because publishers have to be smarter than me I'm more connected than ever just because of the wide range of things that are selling and the way that trends and genres change. They're more connected to writers so agents. Haylee: Some people find it on their own which is brilliant. Haylee: I'm always careful to tell people what I do what their money or their percentage. And also to let them know if they really need me or not because a lot of authors have found a publisher. The Publishers direct to them because they have a huge amount of followers or whether they have a hugely successful blog or YouTube channel. And often if they're speaking. It's a very business savvy and they're speaking directly to their audience and that's what the show is. Sometimes they don't need an agent. Haylee: However at the very very least it's useful to have one because you know the contracts and know where there's meeting room. What we get to be back off basically and we get to make...

How much fun can three Aussie Romance Authors have? Rachael Johns, Lisa Ireland and Sally Hepworth share their secrets of living their lives as professional writers, including making the time to write, pushing through the resistance, finding your tribe and more, much more. The trio chat about word-counts, trusting in the process and accountability. A few gems; if it’s easy, forget it, don’t reject yourself, fracking around (not sure what this one’s about but I’m going to listen again to find out:), just put your work out there, and don’t lose faith in yourself. There’s also a wonderful thing called a Freedom App, which turns everything else off, and leaves you to write undistracted, something I’m checking out as I type this. Rachael, Lisa and Sally have published over thirty books between them, with Sally having just released her novel, Lisa is next and Rachael later in the year. Travelling to unique places or travelling for unique reasons fascinates Amanda and the three guests she speaks with for Episode 56 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast have some very unique stories to tell. Starting off with fellow travel blogger Sharon Gourlay, they chat about her recent trip to a place that Amanda would love to see - North Korea. Politics aside, it’s simply a truly unique experience. Next Amanda speak with Abby Lewtas, who has travelled a lot but had a stint travelling to North America and Europe for a particularly interesting sporting reason … but you’ll have to listen to find out what spot. Loathe tours? Amanda knows many thoughtful travellers recoil at the thought of a month-long bus tour of Europe, but there is a time and place for shorter, smaller tours and that’s the topic of Episode 47 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast. First up, novelist Natasha Lester tells tales of the amazing private tours she took through Paris, helping her to research the history of fashion in a way that Google could never do. Another Australian novelist, Rachael Johns, then chats with Amanda about the pros and cons of taking small tours - and gives some great examples of being a tourist in your own town too by joining some local tourist guide experiences. Finally, Emma Mann talks with Amanda about how she’s leaning more towards joining small group tours when she travels solo, largely because it’s a great way to meet some like-minded fellow travellers, and Amanda is all for that! Secrets sell, and none know this better than Rachael Johns, Australia’s number 1 Rural Romance author, and more recently Life Lit author (a term coined by Johns’ publicist to explain Johns’ latest book, The Art of Keeping Secrets. Reviewer, Debbish dotcom – I love that name and you can find out more about Debbish and her love of everything Jane Austen https://www.debbish.com (here) – describes Johns’ novel as contemporary and uplifting even though it is not traditionally happily-ever-after-ish. But make no mistake, Johns has published more than her fair share of romance novels, twenty books in total in five or so years, with her most exciting moment being when her name was called out as winner of the 2016 Australian Book Industry Awards with another of her Life Lit novels, The Patterson Girls. Now, my all time favourite author is Jane Austen and if Johns writes, as Debbish states, with warmth and humour about issues most of us face in our daily lives, then I’m all keen to read Johns’ backlist, including Book 4 of her Bunyip Bay series – and yes, to those of us who are loyal followers of Outback Dreams, Outback Blaze, Outback Ghost and now, Outback Sisters, that makes four, and I’m guessing an email or three to Johns begging for more may go some way to persuading her to continue the small town series with books five, six and seven (sorry, Rach). Oh, and Johns’ own secret: writing is work, hard work, and sometimes it isn’t the fun the rest of us imagine it to be. Yes, Johns may write in her jarmies, and enjoy the odd Diet Coke, Maltesers and glass of wine (not all together) but she admits to a certain laziness when it comes to re-writing and more re-writing. Unlike some of us, she prefers to get it right the first couple of times. For the real truth about Johns, her books and her upcoming appearances, you can find out more https://www.rachaeljohns.com (here.)
Rachael Johns is one of Australia's most successful romance novelists. She's penned over fifteen books, and has amassed a legion of followers who look forward to what will next unfold in the impossibly romantic Australian outback where men are men who wander in from out of town to get work and then turn up one morning on the farm to lift heavy things with rugged muscled bodies in the sunset. You get the idea. The most interesting thing about this is Rachael's path to success. Yes she's published more than 15 books, but it took her 15 years to get noticed. Also it's interesting how the skills she learned as a kid helped her in her now career - and her creative flow is also something that I'm sure you'll enjoy hearing about.
