Music therapy can have a profound impact on your mental health. In this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we sat down with Mack Bailey, an experienced musician and music therapist. Mac shares his journey from discovering his love for music at a young age to using it as a tool to heal those who have experienced trauma. Mack Bailey has been a musician since the age of eight. He toured with various groups including the Hard Travelers, the Limeliters, a musical tribute to John Denver featuring John's band members, and as a duo with his wife, Rachel Levy. Mack's personal story includes a time of deep depression in which he did not seek support and found himself ready to end his life. He credits writing a song at the 11th hour with saving his life. Through his education in neurologic music therapy, he became interested in how music rewired his brain. In 2011, Mack went back to school to pursue his master's in music therapy at Colorado State University. In 2019, he founded Music Therapy of the Rockies as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization focusing on mental health, music therapy research and techniques, and helping military veterans re-frame their military experience. Mack founded Music Therapy of the Rockies with a mission to help veterans and people who have experienced trauma, and to teach other music therapists the proven skills that have been positively affecting people's lives. Mack is also dedicated to furthering music therapy research and mental health in his local community of Roaring Fork Valley, Colorado. In today's episode we cover: How Mack got started with music How music changed Mack's life when he was in the depths of depressionWhen Mack decided to pursue a career as a music therapistThe incredible impact music therapy has had on Mack's clientsThe science of how music therapy works How trauma impacts your body and overall healthThe retreats that Mack created to help veterans learn to use music therapy to cope with PTSDWe hope you enjoyed our conversation with Mack! I loved my conversation with Pennsylvania-based author Rachel Levy Lesser, and I REALLY enjoyed Rachel's memoir, Life's Accessories. In the episode, we discussed Rachel losing her mother so soon after Rachel had her first child. We talked about how close Rachel was with her mom and the ways friends stepped up for her when her mom was sick with cancer and when her mom passed away. We also covered the ways friends showed up for me when my dad died in December, at a much different stage of my life. It was a really touching conversation, and I've enjoyed getting to know Rachel even more since we recorded. Real life friend-making in action! You can find the show notes here. We're all too familiar with operatic heroines, dying tragically on stage. The arias they sing are often completely beautiful, the skill of the composers not in doubt, but the stereotyping does modern women no service. It's a dilemma that award winning, all women string quartet Zaïde address in a new project entitled No(s) Dames. They have teamed up with counter tenor Théophile Alexandre to showcase arias of tragic heroines by seventeen different composers. The twist is that it is male Theophile who sings the arias. First violinist Charlotte Maclet joins Emma. Today is National Holocaust Memorial Day and the Prince of Wales, as chairman of the National Holocaust Memorial Trust has commissioned the portraits of seven Holocaust survivors all of them now in their nineties, whose childhoods were spent surviving the Nazis. The portraits will be displayed at the Queen's Gallery as a living memorial to the six million innocent men, women and children who lost their lives in the Holocaust and whose stories will never be told. A 60-minute BBC Two documentary Survivors: Portraits of the Holocaust will air tonight at 9 pm and has followed the creation of the artworks and the relationship between artists and sitters. Emma is joined by one of the survivors - Rachel Levy - who was painted by the artist Stuart Pearson Wright. Image: Quatuor Zaïde quartet with Théophile Alexandre Credit: Julien Benhamou

Rachel Levy is running as a Democrat in Virginia's 55th district for the House of Delegates. As a public school teacher, Rachel Levy keeps in mind that every student of hers is someone's child and every student is worthy of respect and dignity. She cares about her students and their learning unconditionally. She keeps in mind that she serves the public and that she is tasked with the sacred responsibility of educating the children of the public. And that encapsulates her approach to public service. Rachel is the proud daughter of two civil rights lawyers, she was born with this sense of sacred responsibility. Rachel was raised to be civically engaged and to be a contributor. They raised her to vote in every election and to pitch in when it counts, help out, and use her advantages to help everyone around her. And after graduating from Wesleyan University, Rachel felt that sense of civic engagement when she decided to become a public school teacher. Preserving and improving public education became her life's work. And it was that sense of sacred responsibility that drove her to get her doctorate in educational leadership and policy at VCU, and to return to the classroom, so she would never forget what it is to be on the receiving end of the policies that are created. Operations research, analytics, data science, and other related disciplines enable individuals and organizations to transform data into insights that facilitate better, more informed decision-making in order to save lives, save money, and solve problems. And in no place is informed decision-making more important than at the highest levels within the U.S. government, where every day policymakers are making decisions and shaping policy that will impact our day-to-day lives. But how can we ensure that the individuals making these important decisions have the tools or awareness they need? By connecting them with resources and people who are knowledgeable about O.R. and analytics. Over the past several years, the INFORMS advocacy program has focused on elevating the work and expertise of INFORMS members and, positioning them as subject matter experts in the national media and the policy ecosystem surrounding the federal government in Washington, DC. As part of this ongoing effort, INFORMS collaborates with other professional associations and societies to extend its reach and impact. This includes the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), whose Science & Technology Policy Fellowships, known as the STPF program, provide opportunities to outstanding scientists and engineers to learn first-hand about policymaking while contributing their knowledge and analytical skills to the federal policymaking process. For this episode I am pleased to welcome two fellows in the STPF program, Rachel Levy, a Science and Engineering Fellow in the Senate sponsored by the American Mathematical Society, and Regina Pope-Ford, a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Science Foundation in the Engineering Directorate's Engineering Education and Centers Division.

Pictures Study Guide Eruvin 74 Today’s daf is dedicated by Yehudit Robinson in honor of Sarah Robinson, Mishna and Talmud teacher at Manhattan Day School. And by Navah Levine in honor of Rachel Levy. With appreciation to a most enthusiastic and encouraging chevruta. "Thank you for helping to keep me on this Daf Yomi Derekh. Happy birthday." In order to permit carrying in an alley by using a side post or a cross beam, what is the minimum requirement of houses/courtyards in the alley? If this minimum is not there, the alley must be treated like a courtyard and either two side posts, one side post four handbreadths wide or a frame (tzurat hapetach) is needed. There are three opinions brought - by Rav, Shmuel and Rabbi Yochanan. The gemara first questions Rabbi Yochanan and also brings a different law of Rabbi Yochanan that matches his opinion here. Then they bring a difficulty for Shmuel - does he change his mind or not? Rav states a law regarding three houses that open to each other and only one opens directly to the alley. On the other side of the alley there is a gentile. One cannot make an eruv through the window of the inner houses. Why not? Would it be the same if they house of the Jew and the gentile opened up to a courtyard instead? Why would one think to distinguish between the cases?

Study Guide Shabbat 25 Today's daf is dedicated l'ilui nishmat Moshe ben Betzalel and Sprintze Pessel z"l by his daughter Rachel Levy and by Matt Nelson in honor of Liz Kershner's birthday. Happy birthday! From where in the Torah do we learn that one can benefit from teruma that became impure while one is burning it? Three answers are brought. One is derived from ma'aser - one can't benefit from burning impure ma'aser but it is implied that in another case one would be allowed to. This case is attributed to teruma. However, the gemara questions - why teruma and not sanctified items? Why can't one light using tar? One is concerned since it smells bad, one won't eat by light of the candles - why is this a problem? Shabbat candles are an obligation so that there will be light in the house on Shabbat. Washing one's body before Shabbat is optional. A verse from Eicha is brought regarding a lamentation for the good things that they are missing when they went into exile. The beginning of the verse is explained as a reference to lighting Shabbat candles. For the end of the verse several explanations are brought regarding what is a sign of prosperity that they were missing and then the gemara brings a braita with four tannaitic opinions about "Who is considered wealthy?" An opinion is brought that one cannot light with sap from a balsam tree. Two reasons for this are brought.
