In this week's Reagan Forum podcast we go back to our in-person event with Holocaust Survivor Celina Karp Biniaz and author William Friedricks for Bill's book, Saved by Schindler: The Life of Celina Karp Biniaz. After spending time with her family in hiding, and then a ghetto, she and her family were sent to a slave labor/concentration camp. Celina even spent several terrifying weeks at Auschwitz where she faced down the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele before ultimately landing on Schindler's list.

Nevertheless, She Persisted: Surviving Teen Depression and Anxiety
Today's guest is Dr. Edith Eger—a psychologist, New York Times bestselling author, dancer, and holocaust survivor. At 16 years old, Edith and her family were sent to Auschwitz where her parents were sent to the gas chambers. However, Edith's bravery kept her and her sister alive. During her time in the concentration camps, Edith and her sister were subjected to torture, abuse, and Edith came face to face with the "angel of death," Josef Mengele. After being liberated in 1945, Edith struggled with suicidal depression, survivor's guilt, and the aftermath of the trauma she endured. After 20 years of suppressing her story and emotions, Edith began to share her experiences and help others work through their PTSD and traumas. Today, at 94-years-old Dr. Eger is a prolific author, practicing psychologist, professor, speaker, and advocate. (bio adapted from https://dreditheger.com/ (dreditheger.com)) In this profound conversation, we discuss living in the present, what happens when we suppress emotions, working through guilt, anger, and uncertainty, taking accountability, acting with kindness, how crucial inner dialogues are, Dr. Eger's experiences with suicidal ideation after being liberated, and her life today! Caution: contains themes of an adult nature. This is the second in a series of re-released episodes from the Feel Better Live More back catalogue. This is a powerful story that my guest delivers with extraordinary wisdom.Today's conversation will stop you in your tracks. It's powerful, confronting and challenging and I am so grateful for my guest's honesty, empathy and willingness to share the wisdom of her 93 years. Dr Edith Eger is a Holocaust survivor, psychologist and expert in the treatment of post-traumatic stress but above all, she's an incredible human being with an extraordinary story to share. Her latest book, The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life, is quite simply a phenomenal read and in my view a must-read for all of us. As a Jew living in Eastern Europe under Nazi occupation, Edith was taken to Auschwitz concentration camp with her parents and sister, at the age of 16. She explains how she found her inner resources, how she came to view her guards as the real prisoners, turn hate into pity and, incredibly, she even describes her horrific experience as ‘an opportunity'. She has liberated herself from the prison of her past through forgiveness. I'm acutely aware that for many of us listening, myself included, it's hard to put our own problems alongside anything Edith has faced. Which makes her teaching that, ‘There's no hierarchy in trauma' all the more beautiful. Edith is not here to make us put our own suffering into perspective and overcome it. Rather, she explains, we can learn to come to terms with pain, reframe it and become stronger. We cover so many different topics in this conversation, from parenting and relationship wisdom to insights on semantics and depression. Edith's message to us is that we can change the thoughts and behaviours that are keeping us imprisoned in the past. I felt grateful and humbled to have had the opportunity to speak to Edith and the conversation really changed me. What a great conversation with Pat Gehant, competitive tennis player, grandmother, recently retired so she can now focus on her other passion projects. Join us to hear the conversation and learn about her:· Many talents including photography.· Journey out of the box was so important.· Career Principles: know yourself, learn new things, work collaboratively and future oriented focus on new opportunity.· Career as an IT Director without any certifications!· Gifts as a visionary, collaborator and networker.· Career decision based on her 4-year old daughter's concerns.· Message: ‘I close the time and place for my shift to continue a passion focused life on my terms'.· Challenge to let go and actually retire to shift to other life passions. Pat offers such vulnerable insight into her passion led career journey and what she has learned along the way. Reclaim your sovereignty over your career with knowledge, creativity and leave the fear of failure at the door. Golden rule of passion driven career- work hard in the current job with an eye towards the future and find the doors and open them. BTW she only applied for 2 jobs in her entire career…..everything else was networking, showcasing her skills and being tapped. The conversation is important, as so many shifts in the workforce, jobs and roles and responsibilities are evolving which is creating new jobs needing new skills. Do you have a chance to create your next role? Recommendations from Pat:· Creative Confidence, Unleashing the creative potential within us, Tom, and David Kelly. We are taught in school to follow the syllabus and chase the grade. When we enter the workplace many times, we are stuck. “Too often, companies and individuals assume that creativity and innovation are the domain of the "creative types." Tom and David Kelly, two of the leading experts in innovation, design, and creativity on the planet show us that each and every one of us is creative.” This book will allow you to understand your creative side and that if you want more success you will have to shrug off more failure. An energizing read at any stage of your career. #1 Know yourself· Open, The Andre Agassi story, Autobiography. From Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a beautiful, haunting autobiography. This is a story that will captivate both tennis players as well as anyone interested in learning how one can overcome failure on such a public forum and become a beloved and humble citizen of the world. #1 Know yourself· A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy...Book by Sonia Purnell. In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and--despite her prosthetic leg--helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it. Why read this? Because this book reads like the best of Daniel Silva, John Le Carre, and other, only this is real…all of it! #3 – Work Collaboratively (I know a stretch, but an amazing women we never learned about in school. What a story!)· Unstoppable" Siggi B. Wilzig's Astonishing Journey from Auschwitz Survivor and Penniless Immigrant to Wall Street Legend" by Joshia M. Greene. Unstoppable is the ultimate immigrant story and an epic David-and-Goliath adventure. The show presents an interview with Eddie (Avrum) Hoffman, who survived Auschwitz, slave labor at a Krupp factory in Breslau (Wrocław), a death march, and the last days at Ebensee, the brutal Mathausen subcamp.Eddie Hoffman was born in February, 1929, in Sevluš, Czechoslovakia, one of three brothers. The town was in the Subcarpathian Ruthenia part of Czechoslovakia and was also known in Yiddish as Seylesh (סעליש) and in Hungarian as Nagyszőlős. It is now called Vynohradiv and is in Ukraine. His father ran a small shoe manufacturing business, and his mother ran a small general store. In 1944 his father left the family to join the partisans fighting against the Nazis, never to be heard from again, and he and his mother and brothers were deported to Auschwitz. He was the only immediate family member to survive the Holocaust. He eventually settled in Los Angeles, where he owned and managed several bars and restaurants. He now resides with his wife in Orange County, near Los Angeles. The interview took place at his home in October, 2021. The interview with Eddie is dedicated to the memory of Arthur Machlovitz ע״ה, also an Auschwitz survivor from Subcarpathian Ruthenia, from the town of Iza. He was long-time friends and a former business partner with Eddie and was friendly with Yiddish Voice host Meyer Dovid, and so he introduced them in a way: they met at Arthur's funeral in the summer of 2021. Also on this show we sadly announced the passing of Mrs. Margaret (Matele) Friedman ע״ה, who died just two days earlier (Feb. 21, 2022). She was friends with Yiddish Voice host Meyer Dovid, had been featured on several of our broadcasts over the years, and was known in the community for her wonderful singing ability, especially in Yiddish. Also an Auschwitz survivor from Subcarpathian Ruthenia, after the way she returned to the area and married and started a family in Seylesh, and lived there for more than twenty-five years under the Soviets, before the family moved to the US in the 1970's. געבענטשט זאָל זײַן איר אָנדענק! Music: The following were sung by Matele Friedman and recorded by The Yiddish Voice on Jan 1 2020: Fraytik Tse Nakhts (Composed by Shuli Hollender, Matele's first cousin, who died right after the liberation.) Vu Nemt Men A Bisele Mazl Af Dem Pripetshok (Oyfn Pripetchik) (Words and music by Mark Warshawsky) Intro and Outro instrumental music: DEM HELFANDS TANTS, an instrumental track from the CD Jeff Warschauer: The Singing Waltz Extended episode: this episode is slightly longer than 1 hr 23 minutes. In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day this week, we look back at our special interview with a 97-year-old Auschwitz survivor. William Harvey was just 19 when Nazi soldiers knocked on his door and forced him and his family into a ghetto, where they were later crammed in a cattle car to make the harrowing journey to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Harvey tells host Giselle Fernandez that he was separated from the rest of his family almost immediately and never saw his mother again. Since being liberated from the camp, Harvey has somehow found peace with what happened despite all he went through. He immigrated to Los Angeles, where he opened two successful beauty salons, and often speaks at Holocaust Museum LA with hopes that his story reminds people of the importance of speaking out against hatred and injustice.

On today's podcast I am joined by Dr Edith Eger. Auschwitz survivor, leading Psychologist and best selling author of 'The Choice' and 'The Gift'. This was truly one of the most remarkable conversations I have had with anyone. For someone who has witnessed and been victim to some of the worst atrocities man kind has ever seen, but has maintained her ability to show love, compassion and empathy for others, including the Auschwitz guards, is truly remarkable. Dr Edith epitomizes what it means to have inner strength. This is a great conversation on healing trauma, finding happiness and inner peace, as well as contentment. Many amazing life lessons shared here, that I will always remember.

Turning back the clock is impossible, but Dr. Rotbart offers sage guidance to help us appreciate what we have in our lives, and take greater pride in what we've done with our lives — without spending precious time and energy wishing things had turned out differently. Woven into his timeless message are especially timely observations on the COVID-19 pandemic, from his expert perspective as an infectious diseases physician, including coping mechanisms and paths for going forward as individuals and as a society. He is Professor and Vice-Chair Emeritus of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the author of more than 175 medical and scientific publications, including five previous books for general audiences. Kathryn also interviews Filmmaker Joshua M. Greene, author of “Unstoppable: Siggi B. Wilzig's Astonishing Journey from Auschwitz Survivor and Penniless Immigrant to Wall Street Legend.” Greene delivers a captivating story, as well as an historic document that will resonate with readers long after they finish his book. This one-of-a-kind rags-to-riches adventure follows a young boy from starvation on death marches to dinner at the White House, and recounts the volcanic, miraculous life of Siggi Wilzig, who survived the Holocaust to become one of the biggest — and most unexpected — successes in postwar American business. A featured speaker at the Pentagon and the Judge Advocate General's College, Greene frequently lectures at state bar associations on issues of war crimes law. He has spoken on issues of Holocaust memory for NPR and Fox News, and his editorials have appeared in the NY Times, the LA Times and the Chicago Tribune.
