August 31, 2023 - Ray Padgett
Bob Dylan finally reunited with the Band officially to record the Planet Waves album in 1974. The stories behind the creation of Planet Waves and the events of the subsequent tour will make you wish that time machines were a real thing.Planet Waves is just one of a number of albums marking its 50th anniversary here in 2024. As it happens, Ultimate Classic Rock recently collected 50 albums turning 50 this year and Jeff had an idea: Why don't we spend part of each month in 2024 discussing some of those albums at the 50-year mark? This conversation about Planet Waves is the first installment. Jeff and Matt welcome UCR's Allison Rapp to talk about a bunch of Bob-related subjects as they examine how Planet Waves came together. How does it stand up against the rest of Bob's catalog today? Was David Geffen ultimately the villain? Can you imagine these songs without the Band playing on them?We also discuss Bob's feelings about the '74 tour -- and dig into some fun Bob quirks. Subway sandwiches! Welding! Al Jarreau! Plus, Georgia Satellites guitarist Rick Richards drops in (virtually) to share some amusing Bob anecdotes from his personal experiences. Our thanks to Allison for joining us to spend a bit of time in the Dylan rabbit hole!Related:Here is the UCR article that Jeff wrote (and doesn't remember) about Planet Waves. We mention Ray Padgett's excellent Dylan newsletter and if you're not already reading that, now's a great time to jump in as he's going through each show of the '74 tour.

Collecting around 50 original, in-depth interviews, Pledging My Time: Conversations with Bob Dylan Band Members (out June 27 on EWP Press) is the first look at Bob Dylan's career entirely from the perspective of the musicians standing a few feet away from him on stage – from his earliest days in the ‘60s all the way through the 21st century Never Ending Tour. With a few exceptions, these artists are not household names, but they have in many cases spent years making music with one of the most revered and mysterious artists in the world. The world of Dylan's bands and his road life has seemed fairly impenetrable for decades now. Many people in this book have never spoken before about their time with Dylan, or certainly not in as much depth. Interviewees span every era of Dylan's career, from Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Martin Carthy talking about the early folk scene up through Benmont Tench and Alan Pasqua talking about recording Rough and Rowdy Ways. This guest list guiding the backstage tour also includes one-off sit-ins, behind- the-scenes touring personnel, and even a notable Grammy Awards stage-crasher.If Dylan is, as he famously put it back in 1965, a “song and dance man,” these are the people who have sung and danced alongside him.
Ray Padgett lives in Vermont, first discovered Dylan when he was 16 in the 21st Century and was fascinated and besotted, later launching the newsletter ‘Flagging Down the Double E's' and now publishing the enthralling ‘Pledging My Time', a collection of his interviews with over 40 people who've worked, performed and recorded with the inscrutable old rogue. Both the book and this fast-moving, whip-smart and very funny conversation are revelatory and highly recommended, the podcast shedding light on … … the daily life of Bob Dylan – eg the piles of gifts he routinely receives and the security men who scour his vacated hotel rooms to remove anything that could be nicked and put on eBay. … the only friend who seemed to co-exist with him on “an equal footing”. ... an eye-witness account of his first performance (aged 13) at a Jewish summer camp in Minnesota. … the childhood friend who owned a fish business in Duluth and ended up running the Rolling Thunder Revue - as Dylan enigmatically put it, “if you can sell fish, you can sell tickets”. ... the time he went to a business conference and nobody recognised him. … how he tells musicians to “never play the same thing twice”. … the chance meeting with Scarlet Rivera – two hours later she was onstage as “my violinist” with Dylan and Muddy Waters. … multiple examples of his love of spontaneity and the extraordinary way he hires musicians. … a rare moment when his career seemed to stall. … and honourable mentions of Richard Thompson, Paul Stookey, Jim Keltner, Stan Lynch and Jeff Bridges. Holiday songs are in the air and everywhere these days! Some are classics, some are new, some are shiny and some…well. Nevermind. Last year, Other Steve pulled out a classics with Morphine's “Sexy Christmas Baby Mine. We even got to have a final conversation about it with drummer Billy Conway. We also added a unique mashup of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah” to our conversation about that now standard with author Ray Padgett. Once again, Other Steve has played Santa this year, and unearthed a classic medley of John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over) and "Give Peace a Chance" from Melissa Etheridge. He also tells a great tale about what it's like to dress a stage for Christmas, and record a classic holiday tune. In Ohio. In July.

"Strumming my pain with his fingers... Singing my life with his words..." Killing Me Softly with His Song is a song about the pleasure and embarrassment of being seen. The feeling that someone has reached into your deepest, most private feelings, and laid them bare: "I felt he'd found my letters, and read each one out loud". It's a song about a singer, and about what music can do. And it's a love song that feels at once happy and sad. The song was a huge hit in two different generations. It won Grammy Awards for The Fugees in 1997 and for Roberta Flack in 1974. Ray Padgett, author of Cover Me: The Stories Behind the Greatest Cover Songs of All Time, unfolds the layers of the song's history as a famous cover of a famous cover. The musicologist Nate Sloan explores what the song does harmonically, oscillating between major and minor chords to create a sense of uncertainty and longing. And Lori Lieberman tells the story of the Don McLean concert that inspired her lyrics for the song, that she was the first to record as a young singer-songwriter in 1972. It's a song that transports Tiff Murray back to the hot New York summer of 1996, when the Fugees version blared from every car radio and shopfront. For her it was the soundtrack to falling in love while far from home. It's also a love song for Julie Daley, but now with a sharp edge. Dr Robin Boylorn listened to the Fugees version as a self-conscious teenager and felt a flush of recognition; Ben heard it the Christmas he first came to the UK from South Africa, played by a busker early one morning in Covent Garden as the first snow he'd ever seen began to fall; and Perminder Khatkar has treasured the song since it played in the delivery room during the birth of her first child. Produced by Mair Bosworth for BBC Audio in Bristol

Often, when people think of Bob Dylan, what comes to mind is the image of the lone troubadour playing his guitar in the spotlight - but in reality, an integral part of Bob Dylan’s art is his shifting sound, which he in no small part owes to the many excellent bands that have accompanied him through the decades. Each of them would be worth their own episode, but this week Laura and Robert are zeroing in on the singers whose harmonies have allowed Dylan to explore and expand his own vocal abilities. From The Band to the Rolling Thunder Revue, to Dylan’s gospel backing choir, to the Never Ending Tour: we’re talking Dylan’s Background Vocals! Here’s a link to Ray Padgett’s excellent Substack, “Flagging Down The Double E” where you can find his interviews with Alan Pasqua and Larry Campbell which I mention in the episode. You can now support Definitely Dylan on Patreon.Playlist:Somebody Touched Me (Live in Portsmouth, UK, 25 September, 2000)Dear Mrs. Roosevelt - Bob Dylan and the Band (Woody Guthrie Tribute Concert, 20 January, 1968)Just Like a Woman (Live at Boston Music Hall, Boston, MA, 21 November, 1975 - Evening)Going, Going, Gone (Live at Budokan)Ninety Miles An Hour (Down A Dead End Street)Key West (Philosopher Pirate)
Everyone loves cover songs. And a great cover often makes a song stronger. Why is that? Author Ray Padgett, of the website www.covermesongs.com, lets us in on the origins of classic covers — and tells the larger story of how cover songs have evolved over the decades. The Beatles made “Twist and Shout” famous, but who did it first? Where did the Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody" come from? Aretha Franklin demanded “Respect,” Patti Smith blew up "Gloria," DEVO deconstructed "Satisfaction," and Talking Heads recast Al Green's "Take Me To The River." Hear more from Ray in this episode!
Tosh and Kimley discuss "I’m Your Fan: The Songs of Leonard Cohen" (33 1/3) by Ray Padgett. Tribute albums are often derided and tend to elicit a love/hate reaction. When done right, they can illuminate a song and boost an artist’s career as did this one for Leonard Cohen. Padgett looks into not only the specifics of this Leonard Cohen tribute album but the history of the genre in general and some of the key players like producer Hal Willner and frequent contributor Juliana Hatfield. When one great artist covers another great artist it can be sublime. Or it could make your ears bleed. Art is always a gamble… Theme music: "Behind Our Efforts, Let There Be Found Our Efforts" by LG17
A tribute album is a way for musicians to pay homage to an artist they love. While not all of them are good, the great ones let the music shine through. Leonard Cohen's record label refused to release his 1984 album Various Positions —which included the song "Hallelujah" — in the United States. Luckily, Velvet Underground founder John Cale was one of the few who did hear "Hallelujah," and he covered it for I'm Your Fan. Jeff Buckley would hear that version, and take the song into the stratosphere.Author Ray Padgett talks about that album and about tribute albums as a whole and what they mean to the record business. Good, bad, and worse, Ray goes deep into this unique and very popular subset of the industry.
When Leonard Cohen was readying his 1984 album Various Positions, his label refused to put it out because of one song: “Hallelujah”. The track didn’t make waves until a cover by John Cale in 1991. That version gave new life to the song, and Leonard Cohen’s career. On the debut of Season 2 of Hidden Track podcast, we explore the fascinating story behind one of Leonard Cohen’s best-known songs with author Ray Padgett, and producer John Lissauer.
Ray Padgett is a music blogger extraordinaire who writes about cover songs so you don't have to. When Lori Lieberman was 19 years old, she went to a concert of a singer she didn't know, and ended up writing a poem that would become one of the greatest cover songs of all time. This week we are going to look at the art of covering in popular music, and how that art marked the conversion from a classical model of musical aesthetics to a contemporary one. Popular music in the modern era is metaphysically complex due to the fact that its listeners make very fine-grained judgments about artistic merit and quality. We are going to talk about the stories behind some of the most iconic cover songs in the rock era, analyze an iconic song with Switched on Pop podcast host Nate Sloan, and transform all of it into the philosophy of music. Guests include Ray Padgett, Nate Sloan, Cristyn Magnus, and P.D. Magnus. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
