Polishing the Pulpit 2024 - BransonBrumback Rick - Seven Things You Have to Read Before You Die
Has our society lost the art of reading? Has social media fried our attention span? There is no better person on the planet to take on this subject than Jim Mustich, the legendary book guru who dedicated 14 years to helping us find the books that will change our lives. Don't miss this far-ranging conversation which covers the therapeutic benefits of reading; the TikTok phenomenon “#BookTok”; the similarities between the metaverse and the novel; and how Jim created a work-out regime for his attention span by reading the entirety of Proust's “Remembrance of Things Past.” (Decide for yourself whether to try this at home!) Some recommendations for our Jolty listeners are included, including Jim's favorite book for triumphing over his to-do list.

There are people who’ve thought a long time about things you’ve thought about but never knew anybody else had thought about. And those people have written books exploring those very things. Even the apostle Paul mentioned the value of reading works in addition to scripture. Scott Moore of Baylor University and Lou Markos of Houston Baptist University join us for a conversation about books to read in this life.
James Mustich (pronounced "Mustik") is the author of 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die, a comprehensive list of fiction and non-fiction books. Jim has worked in the book industry for decades and in this episode we discuss his 14-year effort to write the book, why reading is such a valuable use of your time, and a few books Jim recommends for business people, leaders, and those interested in developing a deeper meaning in their lives and work. You can visit www.1000bookstoread.com to vote on the list and add your own suggestions. Jim founded the mail-order book catalog A Common Reader: Books for Readers with Imagination in 1986. Upon its discontinuation in 2006, he went to work for Barnes & Noble where he was the founding editor of the online literary journal the Barnes and Noble Review in 2007. In 2017 he became the founding executive producer of the Barnes & Noble Podcast.
There are over a hundred million books in existence. And the average person only has 8 decades in which to read them. So which books should you choose to read over others before you croak? It's a question that's launched scores of lists and many an argument, and my guest today has fired his own missive in the debate. His name is James Mustich, he’s been in the book business for over 30 years as a book seller, reviewer, and editor, and he's created the ultimate book list in his book 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die. Today on the show, James explains his guiding philosophy on the books he decided to include in his list, and how he designed the book to have the feel of browsing through an ideal bookshop. James then makes the case for why book lists are helpful, but should never be seen as strictly prescriptive. We then dig into the surprising genres of books that James includes in his list, including science fiction, detective novels, and children’s books, and one or two of his very top recommendations in each category. At the end of our conversation, James makes a list just for the AoM audience of books every man should read before he dies. Get the show notes, including Jim's list of books for men, at aom.is/1000books.

This episode features a very special conversation, as the podcast's former Executive Producer James Mustich takes a turn in the guest chair, joining us to talk about the marvelous work he spent years – mostly nights and weekends – composing. 1000 Books to Read Before You Die is, as its subtitle notes, a life-changing list, but it's a lot more than that. Each entry gets its own gemlike mini-essay, a quick peek at why Mustich thinks a particular book deserves your time, and from Absalom, Absalom! to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, the subjects, styles and moods are all over the map. In this episode we take a look inside this celebration of reading and the endless universes the bookshelf offers us to explore.
