What does evangelical Christianity have to say about AI? Quite a lot, according to Jason Thacker. As Director of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), he oversaw the creation of the organization's official AI statement of principles—the first put out by any religious denomination—which recommends moral responsibility towards new technology. Thacker and Kalman discuss how the document came to be, how it might extend to U.S. legislative guidance, what makes it particularly Baptist, and how a Jewish statement might differ. About our guest: Jason Thacker is a prominent figure within the Southern Baptist Convention, serving as the Director of Research and Technology Ethics at the ERLC and as an assistant professor of philosophy and ethics at Boyce College and Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Guest: Tom Ascol, Senior Pastor, Grace Baptist Church (Cape Coral, FL)The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is the largest Protestant church denomination in North America, with six seminaries, 47,000 churches, 13 million church members, and entities like the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), Lifeway Christian Resources, the North American Mission Board (NAMB), and more. Some of the most influential churches and pastors in America are part of the SBC. SBC churches are expected to give to the Cooperative Program (CP), which uses the funds for all their various entities and endeavors. In 2023, the CP budget was nearly $200M.Any organization this size with this much influence and funding is going to be a battlefield of agendas. The SBC was once moving to the left theologically but made a “conservative resurgence” in the 1980s. In recent years, the SBC has becoming wobbly on issues related to social justice, Critical Race Theory, female pastors, and more.At stake at this year's upcoming SBC Annual Meeting June 9-12 in Indianapolis is a proposed amendment to the SBC constitution, called the “Law Amendment” (named after Mike Law, the VA pastor who submitted it), that SBC cooperating churches do “not affirm, appoint, or employ a woman as a pastor of any kind.”Many SBC churches currently do employ female pastors in clear violation of God's Word that only men of high character be pastors and elders. We'll read those passages during the program.Tom Ascol, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Cape Coral, FL and president of Founders Ministries, joins us for the fifth year running to discuss issues within the Southern Baptist Convention that have impact across broader Christianity.

They discuss the importance of the Southern Baptist Convention and its impact on American life. They also delve into the role of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) and its failure to defend conservative Southern Baptist interests. They highlight the need for a conservative president in the Southern Baptist Convention to appoint the right people to committees and trustees. They also address the issue of sexual abuse within the convention and emphasize the importance of biblical justice and due process. In this conversation, William Wolfe and Chase Davis discuss the need for reform within the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). They highlight the importance of upholding biblical standards of justice and rejecting the crisis narrative that has been used to weaken the SBC. They also discuss the upcoming SBC presidential election and the qualities that conservatives should look for in a candidate. They emphasize the need for a president who supports the law amendment, financial transparency, conservative reform-minded trustees, and strengthening the boundaries of SBC cooperation. They also address concerns about the law amendment and the importance of passing it to maintain the SBC's commitment to complementarianism.TakeawaysThe Southern Baptist Convention is the largest Protestant Christian denomination in America and its health and theological purity are crucial not only for Southern Baptists but for all Christians. The Center for Baptist Leadership aims to revitalize the Southern Baptist Convention, defend it from external threats, and provide a better Baptist voice in the public square. The Southern Baptist Convention can be reformed by electing a conservative president who appoints the right people to committees and trustees, leading to a change in direction. The issue of sexual abuse within the Southern Baptist Convention should be addressed with biblical justice, ensuring care for potential victims and protection for potential falsely accused individuals. The Southern Baptist Convention needs to reject the crisis narrative and focus on upholding biblical standards of justice.Conservatives should look for a presidential candidate who supports the law amendment, financial transparency, conservative reform-minded trustees, and strengthening the boundaries of SBC cooperation.Passing the law amendment is crucial to maintaining the SBC's commitment to complementarianism and preventing the slide into theological liberalism.Support the showSign up for the Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/chasedavisFollow Full Proof Theology on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/fullprooftheology/Follow Full Proof Theology on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/fullprooftheology/

In this episode, I explore the cultural engagement model of Russell Moore by describing my appreciation and concern over his approach.  Russell Moore is currently the editor in chief at Christianity Today. He was the director of Christianity Today's Public Theology Project. Before that, he was the President of Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention. He has also served as the provost and dean at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The winsomeness strategy of cultural engagement has received widespread criticism for being an insufficient strategy to meet the time. GUEST: TOM ASCOL, Senior Pastor, Grace Baptist Church (Cape Coral, FL)The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is the largest Protestant denomination in the United States with over 47,000 churches and 14 million members. The SBC also operates five seminaries, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), Lifeway Christian Resources, the North American Mission Board (NAMB), and more.So when a 400-page report released recently detailing sexual abuse and cover up by SBC leadership and an allegation of sexual assault by a former SBC president, shock waves reverberated inside and outside the denomination. This is yet another sordid situation at the SBC. You may remember the sermon plagiarism scandal that the current president Ed Litton was involved in. Or the passage of Resolution 9 to use Critical Race Theory as an “analytical tool”. Or the ongoing battle within the denomination with regard to women preaching to men, professing Christians who identify as “same-sex attracted”, and “social justice” as a “gospel issue”.Some might conclude the SBC is like a soap opera but it's worse than that—flagrant sin, errant doctrine, and false teachers have infiltrated the denomination and churches and people are being harmed…and God is not glorified.Just a couple weeks from now, the SBC will gather for its annual meeting in Anaheim, CA, where the “messengers” will elect a new president to replace Ed Litton. Tom Ascol, senior pastor of Grace Baptist Church and president of Founders Ministries, is one of three candidates for president and he joins us this weekend on The Christian Worldview.

In April of 2019, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention published a document called “Artificial Intelligence: An Evangelical Statement of Principles.” Armed with the belief that God has created humans with both the ability to invent new technologies and the wisdom to answer new dilemmas those technologies raise, the document outlined basic principles to guide a Christian ethical approach to advances in AI. In a cultural moment when many Christian voices express anxiety over the effects of the digital world on faith, community, and identity, the tone of this document was one of hope, acknowledging the dangers of advances in technology while professing that “nothing we create will be able to thwart [God's] redemptive plan for creation.”  In this episode, Jason Thacker, lead drafter of the document and director of the Research Institute for the ERLC, further explores the intersection of theology and digital technology with Gretchen. Together they consider the meaning of discipleship in the 21st century, the ways that our identity is (and isn't) formed by technological advances, and the “big” questions that underlie ethical issues relating to data privacy, digital surveillance, and more. Jason seeks to help root the Church's approach to AI in a posture of wakefulness and hope, alert to the impact of timeless questions on current issues and equipped to engage with them as members of a digital age.

Whether debating the efficacy of face-coverings to fight a global pandemic, thinking critically about important political issues, or simply asking the age-old question of, "How far is too far?", the concept of freedom is one that is constantly on the mind of teenagers. In this episode of The Rooted Youth Ministry Podcast, Josh Wester of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) distinguishes between authentic Christian freedom and freedom as defined by the world. Apart from Christ, freedom is defined by asking the question, "How can I please myself?" On the other hand, the Christian defines freedom as the ability to live a life that honors the Lord and loves other people well. In addition to constructing a theology of Christian freedom, Josh delivers down-to-earth advice on how youth workers and parents can help teenagers think through and implement these doctrines at an early age. In light of our cultural moment, we pray that you'll be equipped and encouraged by this timely episode of The Rooted Youth Ministry Podcast.

REPLAY: The MLK50 Conference held on April 3-4, 2018 by the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) has been controversial, to say the least. Some Christians saw the conference as unifying and necessary, whereas others saw it as divisive and unproductive. The MLK50 Conference is a topic that Darrell and Virgil intended to not discuss on the Just Thinking podcast but were urged to by many who reached out to them on social media after having heard some of the messages that were emanating from that event.
