Stephanie Espy is one of the 19% of women (and 3% of women of color) who earn an engineering degree in America. Growing up in a family surrounded by scientists, engineers, and mathematicians, she considers herself “lucky” considering such grim stats. Lucky because she had a type of exposure growing up that many girls and young women don't. * After working as a chemical engineer and eventually pursuing an MBA, she decided to start a business, MathSP, a premier STEM-focused academic and test prep coaching company. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Through MathSP, Stephanie blends the skills she learned working in industry with her mission to reach the historically disadvantaged and underrepresented in the educational system. * Her outreach efforts became front and center stage with the premiere of her acclaimed book, STEM Gems. That book soon became a national movement and found Stephanie on stages, in classrooms, and facilitating events. * And then the pandemic happened. Just when it seemed the momentum she gained was in jeopardy, Stephanie and her team quickly sprang into action. They learned how to apply digital technologies like Zoom and Hopin to continue offering their various events and programs. * In this episode, Stephanie, an MIT, UC Berkeley, and Emory graduate, takes us on her career transition journey starting with her passion for figuring out how things work. She then details the process she developed for transforming her once in-person only events to the first virtual STEM Gems Summit. She also describes the team of people behind-the-scenes required to produce online events and how this business infrastructure led to the international expansion of the STEM Gems movement. * Listen and be inspired as you discover exactly how you can also expand your outreach through Zoom and Hopin.

During these uncertain times, many of us are forced to slow down and explore not only ourselves but also our foundations in life. How to be truly present and achieve a level of consciousness that connects you to your inner purpose and allows you to release past traumas? To talk about this, I’ve invited my good friend Stephanie Morrison, whose 6-week meditation course I’ve been recently taking. We dive deep into understanding the significant power of meditation, letting go of old paradigms, and living life in alignment. Timestamps:[05:38] The year of 4. Astrology + numerology as two significant languages that the universe uses to speak to us. And from a numerology perspective, the year 2020 is the year of 4. Stephanie explains what it means, how masculine and feminine energies come into play, and why it’s so important to find sustainability in the long run. [22:00] Masculine energy is directly linked to overthinking, and it can really stand in the way of living life in the present moment. How to achieve a true sense of being present and a pure level of consciousness? [31:30] Stephanie created a 6-week meditation course that consists of custom daily meditations, daily journal prompts, affirmations and mantras, and tools that help you work with your energy. I’ve been taking Stephanie’s course and I’m sharing my experience from it. I love being open and vulnerable, even if it means sharing moments of past hurts as I know it can encourage you to explore the path of acceptance, too. [53:55] Not everyone feels like they are ready for meditation. For some, it’s easy to go straight to excuses while others feel intimidated by meditation. How to combat this and embrace the freeing practice of meditation without expectations and assumptions? [59:16] Stephanie shares her energy healing techniques to release past traumas or blocks that keep you from living life in the present. In the 13th episode of Wreck Your Perfection, I have the honor of interviewing Dr. Stephanie Allen. Stephanie is a violinist with a passion for teaching violin and viola in the Twin Cities and around the world. She teaches half of her studio through long-distance learning, with students as far away as Africa. Her goal is to equip students with the tools to fully enjoy music and successfully navigate life. Stephanie and her two daughters enjoy living in Northeast, Minneapolis. They love exploring nature, drinking tea on cold nights, and spending time with their beloved cat, Bootsie. In this episode, Stephanie shares so many incredible insights on teaching and parenting through collaboration, plus some helpful tips on creating the life you want, letting go of what isn't serving you, and replacing fear with curiosity. Resources Stephanie uses with her students: here are links to the Feeling Wheel for folks who can read, and a couple of feelings wheels for kids who can't read yet: this one has more feelings and this one is more simple. If you’re interested in learning more about Stephanie’s approach to teaching or violin technique, You can e-mail her at stephanie@violintc.com Hosting a podcast is a part-time (unpaid) job and if you would like to support the podcast through a monthly donation, you can do so for as little as $5/month through Anchor. 10% of all donations go to World Food Programme, towards their Zero Hunger goal by 2030. Fun fact, it only costs 50 cents to provide a day's worth of meals! Join this incredible conversation with Stephanie McAuliffe, coach and best-selling author, as we rework, reframe, and rewrite the grief narrative. This isn’t about forgetting - it’s about learning to understand ourselves and our experiences. Stephanie shares with us her struggle of living amongst alcoholism for the majority of her life. Her own recovery from this trauma began when her coached asked her, “So how do you want to feel?” This question (which she didn’t know the answer to at the time - can you relate?) initiated a journey to understanding who she really was and what she wanted for her own life…instead of allowing labels, such as “survivor” and “victim”, to define her and limit her lived experience in the way forward. In this episode, Stephanie shares a personal experience of profound grief, what she learned about the importance of taking time and space to turn gently inward to better understand all that she was feeling and how that initiated a complete transformation of her life, her sense of Self, and the trajectory of her life. Sarah and Stephanie talk vulnerability, self-love, tender curiosity, and unpack what it means to take responsibility for our experiences. This is a powerful exploration of empowerment and full of actionable steps forward available to anyone who listens. Topics we cover include: Why answering the question “how do you want to feel? can feel so impossible... The up’s and down’s while healing from something traumatic... Why things don’t just happen for us, no matter how hard we want it... What to do with the guilt… How to better understand our grief… What is ‘radical responsibility?’ Resources: Stephanie’s book, “The Message in the Bottle: Finding Hope and Peace Amidst the Chaos of Living with an Alcoholic” Connect with her on Facebook and Linkedin

In This Episode Stephanie’s Story and Her Campus Launching a Startup Backup Plans and Calculated Risks Challenges Working Relationships Quotes in This Episode “I think there's always a question of whether entrepreneurs are kind of risk averse or risk loving or somewhere in the middle. And for us, no question that pursuing our own business was more risky than going a very traditional path.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis “I think there are a lot of benefits to being a young first time entrepreneur, but there are also just so many gaps that you have in terms of pure knowledge and skills and it's really helpful to have mentors and advisors that you can lean on to help fill in those holes.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis “I think vacation is a relative term when it's your own business. So, we're never truly unplugged.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis “We were college students coming out of a liberal arts undergraduate, and we had never worked full time in the real world. And, we've completely bootstrapped the company, as well. So, we've opted not to raise money, and we've funded it entirely through our revenues, and we've been profitable since we launched.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis “I really never growing up saw myself as someone in business, let alone as an entrepreneur. I always thought I was going to be a writer or an editor or a journalist when I grew up. So it's been really interesting to see I guess the evolution of what I'm interested in and what I find fulfilling and meaningful to do in my work day to day.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis “ And I think there's a big misconception out there that you're going to have this overnight success, and you're going to go from nothing to this huge company so fast. And then you're going to sell your business for tons of money or whatever it may be. But really, it's a really long road. It's really hard work. It's sprinkled with some really fun, exciting times, no question. But most of the time you are just slogging through for what feels like an endless stretch of time.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis Resources Stephanie’s LinkedIn and Twitter Her Campus Website Stephanie’s Book: The Her Campus Guide to College Life
