Melinda Mock of RetroBlasting takes us back to 1912 to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Somewhere in Time (1980), the time travel romance starring Superman-era Christopher Reeve and radiant beauty Jane Seymour, directed by the late Jeannot Szwarc based on a novel by Richard Matheson. Should these star-crossed lovers be re-united in the afterlife of their box office obscurity, or should they be doomed never to wander the shores of Mackinac Island? Melinda Mock and Michael French of RetroBlasting fame answered our bat signal at the eleventh hour to join us for this special festive episode after our original guest had to drop out. And boy, are we glad they did! Yes, it's a bit cheeky of us to cover Tim Burton's snowy sequel to his blockbusting hit Batman (1989) on Movie Oubliette. It's dubious to claim it has been overlooked in the years since, but it was certainly a box office disappointment for Warner Bros. when it debuted in 1992. Adjusted for inflation, it earned $420 million less than the original, and is the second-lowest-grossing live action Batman movie, beaten only by Batman and Robin. But is this dark and kinky sequel, in which Batman appears for only 23 minutes, a freaky festive classic? Or a gloomy gothic mess? Follow us on Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky. Michael French of RetroBlasting joins us on a quest to Valhalla with Erik the Viking (1989) – Monty Python alumni Terry Jones' fantasy film starring Tim Robbins, Samantha Bond, Imogen Stubbs, Eartha Kitt, Mickey Rooney and John Cleese. This is the second historical adventure film from ex-Pythons we've covered this year that attempts to avoid treading on the comedy troupe's large coat-tails and trips rather spectacularly, stumbling out of the box office top 20 in under a week with less than $2 million on a $15 million budget. But is Erik's earnest quest to end the violent days of Ragnorok an overlooked rib-tickling masterwork or a tedious misfire? Find out! Melinda Mock of RetroBlasting and Dreamland guest co-hosts and, while Dan is away, leads Conrad into the weird fairytale horror of Troll (1986), Empire Pictures' second-highest-grossing b-movie, which has since been overshadowed by the internet memes of its largely unrelated and famously awful sequel. Featuring Noah Hathaway (The NeverEnding Story), Michael Moriarty (The Stuff), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (!) and Sonny Bono (!!!), it tells the story of the young Harry Potter Jr. – yes, you read that right – discovering a world of magic and terror when his family moves into a new apartment building infested by the titular Troll. It has everything you'd want in a video rental: Sonny Bono turning into a quivering green turd, June Lockheart brandishing a spear and a singing magic mushroom. But is it any good? Find out! A new Dungeons and Dragons movie arrives in theatres this month, so we thought we'd take a look back at the very first attempt to bring the beloved role-playing phenomenon to the screen. As two first-level novices, Dan and Conrad needed an expert Dungeon Master to guide them through this early 2000s CGI-fest, so the sage-like Michael French of RetroBlasting joins them. At least, he does until his Internet took pity and set him free from the spectacle of PlayStation 1 cut-screen establishing shots, Jeremy Irons devouring the scenery and spitting it venomously back out, and evil henchmen in frosty blue lipstick. The fantasy extravaganza directed by first-time helmer Courtney Solomon, featuring Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans, Thora Birch, Zoe McLellan and Kristen Wilson is a much-maligned box office disaster, but is it a powerful gem just waiting to be rediscovered? RetroBlasting's Michael French beams Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) out of the oubliette and forces Conrad and Dan to explore this sci-fi riff on The Seven Samurai (1954) starring Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, George Peppard, John Saxon, Sybil Danning and Darlanne Fleugel. It's exploitation entrepreneur Roger Corman's transparent attempt to cash-in on the Star Wars phenomenon, with a naive farm boy blasting into space to find mercenaries who will protect his peace loving, beige-wearing planet from the evil Sador and his planet-killing superweapon. But crucially, is it any good? And what does Michael make of it? Find out! Visit RetroBlasting on YouTube! Follow them on Twitter and Facebook! Melinda Mock of RetroBlasting joins us to revisit one of her teenage favourites: Wes Craven's Shocker (1989) – a bizarre attempt to create a new slasher franchise with The X-Files' Mitch Pileggi as psychotic serial killer Horace Pinker, who gains supernatural possession abilities after being executed in the electric chair. Future director Peter Berg plays a college football star player whose adoptive family and girlfriend fall victim to Pinker's homicidal urges. Can he figure out how to stop the electrically charged menace before he strikes again? Can he do it with a late 80s hair metal soundtrack raging in the background? Melinda Mock and Aaron Harper of Dreamland, the RetroBlasting podcast, join us for the second half of our Iconicon crossover event! We're exploring one of the lesser-known underwater sci-fi epics released in 1989: Leviathan. It's directed by George P. Cosmatos (Rambo II), stars Peter Weller (RoboCop) and Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters), has special effects by Stan Winston (Aliens) and a score by Jerry Goldsmith (Alien). With that pedigree, what could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot, it turns out. Easily one of the most hilarious episodes we've ever recorded – check it out! *Streamed on YouTube and Facebook 8 July 2021 at 22:00 Eastern Time* If you were forced to choose between the first 50 issues of the GI Joe A Real American Hero comic series by Marvel, and the 50 issues that followed, which would you say is the superior run of books? RetroBlasting co-founder and Dreamland podcast co-host Melinda Mock guides us through the red-tinged comet zombie apocalypse of Night of the Comet – a 1984 cult sci-fi comedy horror written and directed by Thom Eberhardt and starring former guests Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney, with Robert Beltran, Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis. Pop-Culture aficionado and YouTube host Micheal French joins the show to talk about his background, the art of toy collecting, and his hit YouTube show "Retroblasting"! #YouTube #retroblasting #toys #pop-culture #nostalgia #QuarantineLife
Reproductions in the vintage toy hobby has been a source of topic once again recently. Stuart, Craig and Mark are joined by special guest Lee Bullock to discuss the issue. Retroblasting's, Michael French, recently posted a video defending the use of reproduction items in the hobby and attacking the anti-repro groups. All four of the hosts on this show sit firmly in the anti-repro camp, BUT, does the repro supporting members of the hobby have a point, a reasoned argument so to speak. The team take the main points from the video and discuss them in depth. What damage do reproductions do to the hobby? Were reproductions more accepted in the earlier days of the hobby? Is there a place for reproduction in the hobby? Could the Facebook groups do more with regards to reproduction? Is it time to change opinions on reproductions? The boys discuss all these issues and many more and try to give a balanced discussion with regards to reproductions. Does the conversation change their stance? You'll have to listen in. But that's not all this month as Craig has come up with an original way to display his loose collection away from the norm. He goes through it bit by bit. Is it a cool way to display? Or has he lost the plot? All this plus much more from this months Old Fossils. Enjoy the show. We Are Generation Skywalker!

This week we cover the second half of our favorite and most exhausting event of the year, DragonCon! (If you noticed a shortage of geeks in your area over Labor Day weekend... they were all in Atlanta. And they were all ahead of us in the line at Starbucks.) Including: The Geek Girls Run; Classic Sci-Fi Court (good luck, 1984 Supergirl movie); stars from Doctor Who, Cobra Kai, V, and The Magicians; puppeteer Allan Trautman (from Dinosaurs and yikes, The Letter People!); Tai Chi with Silver Spoons star Erin Gray; our panels on Krypton, Doom Patrol, Pennyworth, Russian Doll, Kidd Video (!), and podcasting for authors; RetroBlasting with 1980s ninjas; a pie-fueled ESO Network gathering; the 30th anniversary of Weird Al's movie UHF; and lots more convention silliness. (Did we find people in costume as the Miser Brothers, the Price is Right yodeling guy, and Toonces the Driving Cat? Yes, yes, and yes.) Also: Ed Begley Jr.'s birthday, and the Top Ten songs this week in 1984. (Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" was at number four... and the future attendees of DragonCon were listening.)

Technically this isn't a "horror" or "spooky" themed show. BUT, since Metal is the haven of all things dark, and this episode is 200% METAL, I feel like it's appropriate to include this month. I had the pleasure of being a panelist for the American Sci-Fi Classics Track panel; Heavy Metal Music in Science Fiction and Fantasy. My fellow panelists and I dive deep into the history of heavy metal, it's roots in folklore, and eventually just devolve into proclaiming Metal the RADDEST GENRE OF MUSIC EVER!! Many thanks to track directors Joe and Gary for allowing me to take part, and my fellow panelist, Tegan, Bethany, Melinda, and Gary (he gets around). It was a fantastic experience, and definitely a RAD highlight of the Con. Another great season of comic book and fandom conventions is upon us, so Marc took advantage to have an interview with Voltron's Lance and Sven, Michael Bell, at RetroCon in Oaks, PA. Meanwhile, down in Atlanta, RetroBlasting presented a panel on "The History of Voltron" at DragonCon. There's plenty more Voltron in this episode, including some words from the fans. Kicking off the episode, Marc mentions that Voltron: From the Ashes - Issue #1 - was released on September 16th. Issue #2 will be released on October 21st. There are several positive reviews of the comic book from comic book blogs like: Bounding Into Comics - http://boundingintocomics.com/2015/09/15/comic-book-review-voltron-from-the-ashes-1/ Graphic Policy - [http://graphicpolicy.com/2015/09/07/review-voltron-from-the-ashes-1/][2] Comic Wow! - [https://www.comicwow.com/blogs/1/3390/voltron-from-the-ashes-1-comic][3] Marc will try to get the Alex Milne black and white variant cover at the Dynamite booth at New York Comic Con. Dynamite has also said they would have it available at Baltimore Comic Con, which is coming soon. A new product that became available on Voltron.com is the Voltron Defender Mug by Zak. It is dishwasher and microwave safe, BPA Free, and it's only 10 bucks. As mentioned in this podcast, Saber Rider and the Star Sherriffs has a Kickstarter campaign that ends on Oct. 5, 2015 at 6 AM ET. Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs is an all-new 2D 16-Bit style run'n'gun shoot-'em-up including giant Mecha action, based upon the original series from 1986 for Nintendo 3DS, Steam (PC, MAC, Linux), Sega Dreamcast and PC Engine. To be able to pledge an amount to get your desired reward (by Nov 2016), please go to Kickstarter at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/saberridergame/saber-rider-and-the-star-sheriffs-the-video-game to submit your pledge. They are more than two-thirds of the way toward their $75,000 goal. Help them reach that goal! Here are some pictures of Marc with Michael Bell at RetroCon. There is also a picture of the RetroCon Auction winners with all the voice actors, including (from the left) Doug Stone, Michael Bell, John Moschitta, Jr., and Michael McConnohie. Rose Tuski, one of the organizers of RetroCon, is kneeling in the front. Here are some of the items on Michael Bell's table that he had for people to sign. Unfortunately, he had not brought any Voltron pictures with Lance or Sven. RetroBlasting, featuring Michael French and Melinda Mock, hosted "The History of Voltron" panel at DragonCon in Atlanta. We want to thank them for allowing us to use that audio in this podcast. In the first of two podcast episodes covering Vehicle Team Voltron, Marc welcomes special guest Gregory Tyler (Dudley Drule Right on Voltron.com Forums), who is a fan of everything Voltron, but has a special love for Panosh Place Voltron Toys and is working on creating his own 3D-printed Panosh Place Style Vehicle Voltron. Marc and Greg cover mostly history, comparisons, and story-related aspects of Vehicle Team Voltron in this episode. The second episode, which will be released next week, will cover a little more story-related questions, but will really dive deep into the tie-in merchandise that was associated with the Vehicle Voltron show, and we'll talk about Greg's own fan projects. At the top of the episode, Marc mentions some other coverage of Vehicle Volton that came before this podcast. Obviously, we don't want to suggest that there hasn't been a lot more written about or videos that talk about Vehicle Voltron, but these are what we consider to be 3 of the top ones that cover “the other Voltron”. The first is a video that was produced by WEP several years ago, and it is narrated by former WEP Creative Director, Jeremy Corray. It is entitled Lion Voltron VS. Vehicle Voltron: The Fans Sound Off! The second is a site that was created by a fan named Purrsia, called VoltronCentral.net and it contains information, character bios, episode descriptions, links, videos, pictures and a whole lot more. It breaks everything down by Dairugger and Vehicle Team Voltron in their own respective categories. It is a really good resource for those looking for answers to your Vehicle Voltron questions. The third is the 2-Part Video Retrospective on Vehicle Voltron done recently by RetroBlasting. This comprehensive look at the Vehicle Voltron show and the merchandise that came with it really covers a lot of ground, supported by fantastic visuals. Watch them here: Part 1 of RetroBlasting's Vehicle Voltron Retrospective Part 2 of RetroBlasting's Vehicle Voltron Retrospective Instead of these 2 Vehicle team Voltron podcast episodes re-hashing these other stories, we would like to think that this discussion between Marc and Greg complements them in a respectful way, while diving deep into the substance of the show, its history, and the merchandise and fandom that surround it. Marc also made 2 Big Announcements during this podcast. The first is a worldwide gathering of Voltron fans online on September 10. This “Voltron 30th Anniversary Marathon” in the form of a Google Hangout on Air will be hosted by Let's Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast, and it will start at 2 PM ET and run a full 8 hours, until 10 PM ET. You need to have a Google Account to participate. Fans can chat with each other while they watch a programmed YouTube playlist that will include Voltron episodes from every series, as well as special interviews, celebrity reels, robot chicken sketches, old commercials, and fan films. You won't want to miss this chance to gather with Voltron Fans from all over the world, all at the same time, and watch your favorite giant robot in all his glory. The second announcement was that Let's Voltron will release a special September 10 30th Anniversary podcast, with WEP Managing Director Tiffany Ilardi joining us as a special guest. Also, Chris Wofford from Acidfree Gallery will be announcing the winner of the “Show Us Your Voltron” picture contest. The winner will be receiving a Limited Edition METAL Voltron 30th Anniversary Print (a $200 value!). Thanks for listening!
