Send us a textHigh Plains Drifter (1973)TRIGGER WARNING: HPD features sexual assault as a plot point. Season 14, a new season with a hefty helping of old, comes to town as the TGTPTU hosts return to movies they undervalued and/or missed over the thirteen seasons, beginning with Jack's pick to rewatch HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER (1973). In that original episode released as S2, E6 in 2020, then hosts Ken and Jack were joined by a special guest, and now ongoing host, Thomas. High Plains Drifter, Eastwood's second directed film, left a bad taste in Jack's mouth five years ago when the Eastwood character appears celebrated early in the film during a rape scene, one of arguably multiple instances of sexual violence in the film. As TPTPTU-celebrated director Alex Cox shares in a commentary track on the HPD Blu-ray, while such things were common in and to be judged as of their time, “It is hard to discuss these scenes in an enthusiastic way.” Now five years older and perhaps some the wiser, Jack returns as a guest to weigh in on his rewatch and is joined by new and ever-so-provisional host Ryan who contractually has to relate any and all films shot in the early 70s to ‘Nam. This one is no exception. Hear the frustration as Jack gets his head stuck in plastic bag and how half a decade can change one's take on a movie. Season 8 guest Maggie Thatcher also drops in to offer her two pence. So paint the town red and get the pigshit outta your ears: it's time to go full Western gothic with Malpaso Productions' giants Eastwood, Geoffrey Lewis, and Buddy Van Horn.THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!): Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias
EPISODE 71 - “STEVE & NAN's FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1970s” - 1/20/2024 The 1970s was a decade that saw the rise of the auteur. Filmmakers like Scorsese, Coppola, Cassavetes, Altman, Lumet, and DePalma hit their stride and brought to the screen their specific vision and stylized films. Double Impact (1991) Directed by: Sheldon Lettich Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Geoffrey Lewis, Alonna Shaw, Some Asian fucker with big pecs Double Impact is the one where JCVD plays twins who were separated at birth after their parents get "batman'd", and they come back and do something with a bridge and triads or some gang. Chad is the one that dresses brightly with the floofy hair and Alex is the one with the slicked back hair, so that's how you tell them apart. IMDB describes this one as: "Twin brothers are separated when their parents are murdered but 25 years later they re-unite in order to avenge their parents' death."
Folks... sometimes (but not often) Clint Eastwood tried his hand at comedy and this is indeed one of them. The guys discuss Clint teaming with Bernadette Peters to fight white supremacists (!) in the light(?)-hearted comedy, Pink Cadillac. There is much to behold here from Clint's goofy character work, the delightful Bernadette Peters being good at everything, the whole thing working better as a sitcom (don't steal our idea, TM TM) than a 2-hour PLUS movie, the Jim Carrey cameo and much more. Episode Highlights: How Geoffrey got involved in the PropTech sector from investment banking and a failed startup How the construction industry beginning to utilise new technologies sparked Tiffany's desire to work in the sector and further train people to continue this adoption The trends they have seen with the growth of innovation The challenges with the increased adoption of technology with the construction industry and how they are working to overcome them Why Procore merged with Honest Buildings and the impact it had on business The value Procore brings to its customers The main differences they have found between working with general contractors and property owners The partnerships they are forming with other software providers and what they are trying to achieve with this The investment Procore is making into the pre-construction space and how this ties in with ESG Resources: LMRE Global Recruitment and Search Consultancy LMRE YouTube Interviews PropTech Salary Report, LMRE 2022 Honest Buildings Shout outs: Riggs Kubiak Vantage Data Centers UMT360 Key Takeaways: So we really have seen over the 20 - 30 years that I've been in this industry, an evolution to utilise technology within construction. - Tiffany If they get in there and it's too hard to use or too hard to configure, they're just gonna throw up their hands and go back to Excel. - Geoffrey There's so many things we're seeing and utilising at Procore in terms of AI and ML and really driving data insights to owners. They're starting to see the value of utilising it across the platform because then they can make decisions on future projects based on how the last project went. - Tiffany The one thing I would say for founders out there, you know companies are bought, not sold. Procore's got to really want to purchase Honest buildings. You can't just go to them and say, hey, we're for sale, that's not gonna be something that gets a deal done. - Geoffrey Historically the tools have been built for these general contractors who are doing all the work and very much need software. But the owners who are holding all the risk, I think haven't necessarily availed themselves with the right tools to be able to really effectively manage that risk. - Geoffrey What's interesting is a lot of our most used integrations are things that are used across every industry, not just construction. - Tiffany About Our Host Louisa Dickins Louisa is the co-founder of LMRE, which has rapidly become the market leading global PropTech recruitment platform and search consultancy with operations across North America, United Kingdom, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Combining unrelenting imagination with in-home paranormal activity & child abduction turned into a guaranteed masterpiece with POLTERGEIST (1982). Filmmakers Tobe Hooper & Steven Spielberg proved the horror genre could have emotional depth while remaining absolutely terrifying & creative. And on its 40th Anniversary year, POLTERGEIST still reigns supreme as one of the most memorable ghost stories ever told. //***Discussions include*** The lengthy development/writing process of the film & the state of horror in 1982; Hooper & Spielberg's careers at the time, how they came to collaborate & controversy behind their partnership; vibe vs. theme, elevated/unusual aspects of the story & fundamental fears; cast & character dissections; the film's score, framing style & special effects; memorable scenes, the double ending, sequels, recognition & longevity, plus our undying appreciation of JoBeth Williams. In this week's Non-Cannon, JD and Randy present... Twin brothers torn apart by violence. On a mission of revenge. One packs a punch. One packs a piece. Together they deliver... "Double Impact" (1991) Starring Alonna Shaw, Geoffrey Lewis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and... Jean-Claude Van Damme?! DOUBLE VAN DAMME!
The second of our reading this year takes back to the working-boat families of the First World War. Geoffrey Lewis' beautifully detailed and cleverly structured tribute to the people who worked the boats through this turbulent period is a lovely and moving tribute to their hard work, sacrifices, and bravery. The Longest Trench follows the lives of two families as they work their boats and provides an intimate and carefully-researched window into their lives, charting not just the hardships, but also their joys. As such, it is a touching and heartfelt celebration on an aspect of British life that has been long over-looked. The novel is framed in such a clever way that allows Geoffrey to contrast the wide range of experiences working boaters encountered, from running multiple boats, being No. 1s (owners), different types of cargo. It also shines a light on the practical challenges that this life raised. For example, how do you conduct a courtship when the two parties are on different boats and on different routes? What happens when a young child becomes seriously ill? Publisher's (SGM Publishing) blurb:“Careful research and Mr Lewis' of the canals make this novel a realistic picture of boating people in the days of horse-drawn narrowboats, and once again his characters become real people whose fortunes matter to his ardent readers: Joy and sadness meet them along the way as news from the various theatres of war is received, while the burgeoning romance between a boy and girl carries us along towards Armistice Day.”In this episode I also read as short section from Tom Rolt's Narrow Boat. BUDDY BADTOBER #1! Det är Nobelpris-tider, vilket gör att Jonas Högberg & Anders Hultqvist kan kosta på sig ett par tre stycken "äntligen!". Äntligen en 70-talsrulle i podden igen! Äntligen en film med lite skönt häng igen! Äntligen gör Clint Eastwood entré i Pod Hard! "Oh, it's the guys in the car!"
On this episode, our accidental '90s month comes to a close as we tackle the hysterical VR thriller, The Lawnmower Man! Which cut of the film did we all watch? What's with Jeff Fahey's coke-head laugh? And what bargain bin did Geoffrey Lewis get this Irish accent in? PLUS: How much of this southern judge's time can Stephen King take up?The Lawnmower Man stars Jeff Fahey, Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Lewis, Jenny Wright, Mark Bringelson, Colleen Coffey, Jeremy Slate, and Dean Norris; directed by Brett Leonard.
On this week's episode, the gang gets double vision talking about the stupid, but entertaining JCVD action fest, Double Impact! How was this split screen technology considered passable? What's with the silk underwear? And did we really need that fantasy sex scene? PLUS: Mario had his reasons for wanting to take Donkey Kong's life back in the '80s.Double Impact stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Geoffrey Lewis, Alonna Shaw, and Bolo Yeung; directed by Sheldon Lettich.

Episode 290with Emmanuel Szurek hosted by Chris Gratien and Aurélie Perrier featuring Seçil Yılmaz and Nir ShafirDownload the podcastFeed | iTunes | GooglePlay | SoundCloudNational language politics and the transformation of literacy have effected major changes in both spoken and written language over the course of the last century, but few languages have changed as dramatically as modern Turkish. The reform of the language from the 1920s onward, which not only replaced the Ottoman alphabet with a new Latin-based alphabet but also led to a radical transformation of the lexicon and grammar, has been described by Geoffrey Lewis as "catastrophic success" due to the extreme but unquestionably successful nature of this attempt to revolutionize language in Turkey. In this episode, we talk to Emmanuel Szurek about his research on the politics of the alphabet change, the language reforms, and the surname laws of the early Republican period.
