While Dire Straits were a solid band that had radio hits since their first album was released in 1978, there was nothing to portend the outrageous fortune they would find in 1985 with Brothers in Arms. Their previous album, Love Over Gold, failed to go platinum in the US or produce any big radio hits. Twisting By The Pool from their 1983 EP was catchy but also kitschy and made some wonder if they were trying to parody the oldies instead of creating an homage. While the live album Alchemy was fantastic, it was not a huge seller. Lead singer, lead guitarist and songwriter Mark Knopfler had success in the studio with Steely Dan and Bob Dylan, produced some great movie soundtracks and wrote songs for others like Private Dancer for Tina Turner. But he hadn't made a Dire Straits album that captured the public's imagination. Until they made Brothers In Arms in 1985.... Mark brought in a young keyboard player named Guy Fletcher to give his songs more texture and eventually brought in legendary session drummer Omar Hakim to lay down all the drum parts. The result was an album that hit #1 around the world selling more than 4.5 million in the UK, 9 million in the US and 30 million around the world. The single Money For Nothing topped the charts around the world and featured Sting singing the famous line I Want My MTV. Of course at the time MTV played videos by artists who wrote music and played instruments and between Sting's catchphrase and the cutting edge (at the time) computer animation, it went into heavy rotation and would be heralded as one of the greatest videos for years. But the sound was so crisp on this album it was used to sell CD players in stores and was the first record to sell more on CD than on LP, thanks in large part to recording on digital tape and Knopfler's never ending search for quality sound. Songs like Your Latest Trick and Why Worry may be mellow but you can hear every note. Walk Of Life was fun, upbeat track that featured 2 different videos for the US and UK markets. And while the second side of the album might not have featured the big hits as the first side, Knopfler's lyrics take on more serious notions like war, life and death. the final and title track brought up visions of pain from the Falklands War that had affected so many in the UK and Argentina and is seen as a respectful tribute to those who fought (and often played at military funerals0. You can't tell the story of MTV, the 1980s or Dire Straits without this album and we dug in for an in-depth conversation about its impact at the time and how it sound today. Plus, we have a little audio from Guy Fletcher talking about Dolby Atmos mixes for the upcoming 40th anniversary edition which will include a concert from the Live in 85 tour. This was a big one and we treat it accordingly. Check out our new website: Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%! Is Diddy's scandal about to rival Epstein's in scope? With 120 new claims against him—25 of those allegedly involving minors—things are looking grim. In the first 24 hours of the Diddy tip hotline, over 12,000 calls came pouring in, signaling something much bigger may be lurking beneath the surface. Defense attorney Bob Motta breaks it down, wondering just how deep this nightmare goes and who might be dragged into the mess. Could it spread to politicians, actors, and other big names in music? With alleged video evidence circulating, it seems Diddy's story might not be as easy to sweep away as Epstein's was. Oh, and remember that guy who opened fire in Trump Tower, claiming to be a victim of Diddy's sex parties? At the time, he seemed like a madman. But now, you have to ask—was he just a canary in the coal mine? So, is this just the tip of the iceberg, or are we about to watch a titanic fall? #DiddyScandal #TrueCrime #EpsteinComparison #SexualAbuseAllegations #BobMotta #DefenseDiaries #DarkRevelations #HiddenKillers Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Life is not to be taken lightly, for granted, and abused. Every waking moment that we have is to be respected, understanding that our lives are in the hands of God. Thereby, we must live every moment of our lives in a sincere, mature, sober journey because for every day we live, whether we are young or older, we will come to another phase of living in this journey called life. The lessons that we learn in life, be it from our parents, or from the teachings we receive from church, enables us to have strength for the struggle when the reality of life hits us. Watch as Pastor Donnie McClurkin encourages us to look to God who is the source of our hope and strength in our journey through life. This week, Matty and Craig take a walk of life as they look back at Day & Night, the lead single from Billie Piper's second album. There's little disputing this as a veritable '00s classic, and while Matty is particularly enthused by the killer double-chorus, Craig is tormented by a launderette sequence in the music video. But behind the general brilliance of the track, Billie Piper wasn't having such a great time as a chart-topping pop star. So, while there's much to celebrate about Day & Night, it also came at a high price... It's really hard not to take a denial personally, but it is not personal. Denials happen for many reasons including budgeting issues, space issues….it's a numbers game. In life, there are times where you will not get what you want and there are times where you are shown a different direction. That being said, denials aren't easy, and it's important to protect your mental health. Tune in to this episode as Elizabeth and Chris discuss what to do if you get denied, including key considerations for moving forward. 3 important things to consider if you are denied:Maybe it wasn't your dream school. Take a couple of days to process it and dig deep. Maybe this wasn't the right fit socially or academically. In hindsight, this might become an important pivot in your life leading you toward a better future. What NOT to do if you are denied. Do not call the admissions office to complain or appeal the decision. Remember that there are real people behind the admissions office who have been fielding calls all day. Appeals are rare, if they even happen at all. If it is your dream school, consider transferring there in the future. Call an admissions officer and politely inquire about this process. It is essential to make sure that the school you will go to before transferring to your dream school is accredited. If it is not accredited, your credits won't transfer and you may not be able to transfer at all. The Admissions Club Podcast is your one-stop shop for all things college admissions, complete with a nostalgic 80s playlist and Gen X vibes. It's hard to believe that we've traded in scrunchies and Bruce Springsteen posters for walking our kids through the college admissions process! But, I'm here to share my 25 years of higher education experience, with 10 years of direct college admissions experience, with you and your student so you don't have to walk it alone.Connect with Elizabeth!WebsiteFacebookYouTubeLinkedIn

James Penney is Chairman of Darwin Alternative Investment Management Ltd, a firm that offers innovative alpha driven investment solutions for long term investors. Our conversation covers his exceptionally diverse background, and his experience with studying theology, languages and living in Latin America doing mission-based work. Our conversation starts with his varied university career, and how he landed an 18 year old's dream job as a whisky salesman in Venezuela. What he saw there motivated him to change his major in law to one of theology and during his summers he spent time working in a Benedictine community in what was then conflict-torn Lima. James describes some of the experiences there that haunted him, including visits made to a prison, and we reflect on what he took from those experiences in terms of a deep respect for the human spirit, a desire to further their dignity and to appreciate their resilience. We then cycle back to his professional journey and his initial emergence from academia into a consulting role and then the founding of Darwin Alternative Investment Management. We speak about some of the esoteric strategies pursued by the firm, including investing in bereavement focused industries which are largely fairly fragmented. These include crematoria and funeral homes. By consolidating and improving the efficiency of these organizations Darwin can ensure a more dignified experience for users and more equitable pricing. In his personal reflections James shares his insights as an entrepreneur, including the importance of getting things in writing, the visceral nature of running such a large level of personal financial risk and the lessons learned from a life in both academia and investing. He also counsels us to never confuse enthusiasm for a check. Darwin Alternative Investment Management kindly sponsored our Next Chapter podcast series focused on individuals at later stages of their careers developing plural roles and sharing their wisdom. Given the firm's focus on ensuring the dignity of individuals at every stage of their life it was. a perfect supporter of our own mission of amplifying these voices.Series 4 was sponsored by Alvine Capital. Founded in 2005, Alvine Capital is a specialist advisor and placement boutique focusing on assisting European Institutional Investors within Alternative Investments. It partners with best in class managers, adding value to investors by helping to navigate this very fragmented market.
Black and White: Radical Grace, Raw Truth and Real Hope in a Gray World
Walking out our faith requires applying God's word daily to our lives. How we walk our faith out ultimately demonstrates what we say we believe. Bible Reading: Eph. 4-6 Verse of the day: Ephesians 4:17, "Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds." Word of the day: Walk. It is the Greek word: περιπατέω (per-ee-pat-eh'-o).
Happy Saturday Friends!I hope you have enjoyed this beautiful weekend so far. It was a busy busy busy one for me so far. My next guest joins us from Poland. His story is inspiring, motivating and is an example of why I started my podcast. Please welcome PREMIERE guest Michal Stawicki! I live in Poland, Europe.I'm a father of three—two sons and a daughter.I've been married for over 15 years.I work for one of the biggest media groups in Poland (I changed job in 2015) in a big consulting corporation as a database administrator.I've been a church community member for more than 19 years.I just cannot resist the urge to make this world a better place; first of all through self-improvement, by focusing on my personal growth, and then through the absolute transparency of my progress. It's tough to say which one is harder.Sometimes it's tough to wake up an hour earlier to do my morning ritual—a workout, while listening to people who live on the other side of the world—or to force myself to give up socializing on FB and work on my websites.Sometimes it's even tougher to write a blog post and see that people misunderstand me or worse, totally ignore me.I truly hope my experience will bring some value to your life, that it will help you to realize that you are not really helpless as long as you breathe.
