At the start of September, a massive chunk of the international art world descended on South Korea for a bounty of high-profile art offerings. The marquee event was Frieze Seoul, in its third edition, at the Coex convention center in the luxe Gangnam district, running alongside the long-established Korea International Art Fair. But they represented just one element of the action. All over Seoul, museums and galleries were opening big shows, angling for attention. Samsung's Leeum museum hosted an Anicka Yi blowout and a superb show of young artists curated by Rirkrit Tiravanija. The beauty giant Amorepacific welcomed Elmgreen & Dragset at a museum in the basement of its David Chipperfield–designed headquarters, while Gagosian set up shop with a Derrick Adams exhibition on the ground floor. Up above, local heavyweights came out swinging—PKM with Yoo Youngkuk, Pace with the potent pairing of Lee Ufan and Mark Rothko, and Jason Haam with Urs Fischer. Celebrities were everywhere. Parties were everywhere. No one seemed to be sleeping. Everyone was on the move. And the festivities were not confined to Seoul. The esteemed Gwangju Biennale inaugurated its 15th edition in that southern city the day after the fairs opened, a sharp, tough show curated by the Frenchman Nicolas Borriaud that ran alongside more than 30 national pavilions. And along the country's southern coast, the latest Busan Biennale also drew crowds, with more than 60 artists selected by its curators, Vera Mey and Philippe Pirotte. There was so much happening that it was impossible to see it all—even with a dedicated driver—which many VIPs had—and even if you were willing to forgo moments of rest. This week, Artnet Pro editor Andrew Russeth is joined by London-based reporter and co-author of the Asia Pivot newsletter Vivienne Chow to discuss the art, the food, and everything in between.

Asif Mian's art practice explores how events are perceived, processed, and passed on. Asif Mian has devoted much of his career—via video, installation, performance, and sculpture—to investigating the tenuous connections between the events that shape one's life. Informed by science, mythology, and transcendentalism, Mian's breaking down and rearranging of medium evokes a liminal psychological space, where the “ghosts” of events and the mental processing of violence reside.Mian earned a BS Genetics & BA Studio Art from Drew University, and an MFA from Columbia University (2018). He has a decade's experience as a director of music videos, advertisements, and short films. Mian has participated in residencies at Skowhegan, Maine, MacDowell Colony, Vermont, LMCC Workspace, NYC, and AZ West with Andrea Zettel, Joshua Tree, California. His solo exhibits have been featured in Art Forum, Artnet, Art Observer, and The Dallas News.Awarded the Queens Museum-Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artist, Mian's multi-chapter project, ‘RAF', was the focus of a solo exhibit at Queens Museum. Listen up daddios: in this episode, Alec & Nick take out the bindle-sticks and jugs of wine for a gone reflection on the lingering cultural legacies of bohemianism in the 21st century. Jumping into the Beat generation and mid-20th-century music as a starting point, the discussion focuses on how avant-gardes and countercultures oscillate into and back out of mainstream cultural resonance; and, how the social aesthetics of online media consumption have transformed the dynamic interplay of commerce and liberatory expression. Topics include relational aesthetics, adolescent literary tastes, generational culture wars, Soundcloud's next gen, Nietzsche, Kerouac's “On the Road” and autofiction, the hybridity of classical and novel forms in Indie music, the Verismo Opera of Puccini, Julia Holter, Pitchfork's integration into GQ, participatory art, recent MOMA PS1 presentations of Rirkrit Tiravanija's work, Baudelaire and distinctions between Cyber- vs. Crypto- bohemianism.

We're staying in Los Angeles. Brian Butler's gallery 1301PE will be celebrating it's 30th anniversary this year, so we are covering a lot - from his early beginnings, coming from an artist's family to his studies, travelling the world, working in Germany, founding Brain Multiples and later 1301, which turned into 1301PE, then leaving the US to lead an institution in New Zealand, coming back and lots and lots in between. He talks about how he found the artists he worked with over the years - from Angela Bulloch and Jorge Pardo to Jessica Stockholder and Pae White to Rirkrit Tiravanija - to name just a few (full list on the gallery's website in the shownotes below). Brian always cared about encouraging people to take their time and taking a deeper look at art, to have the patience to let art's impact unfold. In the second half of our conversation Brian reveils a lot about his thoughts on art fairs, the art world in general and his personal way how to stay fluid, creative and in tune with his own compass. The two enjoy a relaxed but contemplative conversation asking questions that Arlette finds she's never had the opportunity to ask before as every other time the pair meets they tend to talk more about daily life and the food they share.Instead, this talk focuses on the musings and reflections attitudes on life, on the pace of art practitioners in the world in recent times that has suddenly both slowed down and changed radically. Finally, the pair discuss Rirkrit's path to teaching, something he's been doing for decades but is rarely talked about or noted upon.Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija is known for a practice that overturns traditional exhibition formats in favor of social interactions through the sharing of everyday activities such as cooking, eating and reading. Creating environments that reject the primacy of the art object, and instead focus on use value and the bringing of people together through simple acts and environments of communal care, Tiravanija's work challenges expectations around labour and virtuosity. Tiravanija is on the faculty of the School of the Arts at Columbia University and is a founding member and curator of Utopia Station, a collective project of artists, art historians, and curators. He also helped establish an educational-ecological project known as The Land Foundation, located near Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Danny Báez immigrated at 20 from the Dominican Republic to the US and worked for one week in a factory before realizing he had to find another route. Odd jobs paid the bills the next 5 years, until serendipity changed the entire trajectory of his life. A friend who worked for renowned Thai artist, Rirkrit Tiravanija, needed help for a 3-day gig. Danny showed up and worked hard, doing whatever was asked with a smile. On the second day, Rirkrit approached Danny and asked him what his dreams were. The rest is history. That gig lasted 3 years, followed by 7 years assisting legendary gallerist, Gavin Brown. Danny then launched out on his own. Co-Founder of the iconic collective, ARTNOIR. Education: Alternatives and the Academy with Emily Floyd and Gridthiya Gaweewong This program is part of ACCA’s 2021 Lecture Series, Experimental Institutionalism: Contemporary Art and Curatorial Ecologies and features two short lectures by Emily Floyd and Gridthiya Gaweewong, followed by a conversation with ACCA’s Artistic Director and CEO Max Delany. 'Loose Objects and Situated Knowledge', a lecture by Emily Floyd: Emily Floyd’s practice activates spatial and material strategies of child-centred learning, exploring possibilities and limitations for navigating the casualised realm of Contemporary Art’s critical classroom. Emily will discuss the concept of Loose Objects, an institutional experimentalism used in Montessori classrooms, referring to objects that can be moved around and manipulated by children as they play and explore. Like utopian artworks, Loose Objects play the role of itinerant, post-human educators; freely circulating across institutional frameworks. Yet, what happens when these haptic distractions can no longer deflect from the flaking paint on the kindergarten walls? 'What’s missing with the Art School in Thailand (and beyond)?' a lecture by Gridthiya Gaweewong: Gridthiya Gaweewong founded arts organisation Project 304 in 1996, and is currently Artistic Director of the Jim Thompson Art Center, Bangkok. Her curatorial projects have addressed issues of social transformation confronting artists from Thailand and beyond since the Cold War. Gaweewong has organized exhibitions and events including Underconstruction, Tokyo (2000 – 2002), Politics of Fun at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2005), the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival (1997–2007) (co-founded with Apichatpong Weerasethakul), Saigon Open City in Saigon, Vietnam (2006-07) (with Rirkrit Tiravanija) and Unreal Asia, Oberhausen International Short Film Festival (2010). Gaweewong is on the curatorial team for the 2018, 12th Gwangju Biennale, Imagined Borders. She is also the head curator of ICI’s traveling exhibition Apichatpong Weerasethakul: The Serenity in Madness.

Hey everyone. I hope everyone is staying safe. My school in China has currently moved to online teaching for the foreseeable future as no one knows how long the virus will affect China. As I mentioned in my previous episode, I rerouted my flight to Thailand to wait out the virus. I stayed in Chiang Mai and enjoyed living in  warm weather and eating a lot of amazing northern Thai food, also called Lanna cuisine. I was also able to check out the Land Foundation, an art project started by Rirkrit Tiravanija. The foundation was hosting a solar panel cookout with local Lanna recipes and it interesting to see the whole event play out. I also met two other professors from Shanghai and Beijing who also left their cities and are teaching remotely. The longer I stayed in Asia, the more the news seemed to get worse and worse, so my original plan to teach remotely while traveling across Asia didn't seem too good. I left for Seoul for a week, but by the time this episode will be released, I'll be flying back to the US.For today's episode, I have Jo Elizabeth Stewart. Jo is a poet and theater maker. She uses a combination of gesture, voice, and text to make performance that investigates entrapment, borders, and freedom. Jo graduated from Reed College with a BA in English literature (2014) and continues to study poetry under the guidance of experimental poet Tracie Morris. She is a cross-disciplinary MFA candidate in the Literary Arts program at Brown University.I met Jo at a recent residency I did at Vermont in the winter break between semesters. In the residency, I met a wonderful group of artist of color and was lucky to interview a number of them. Jo was the first one I interviewed during my time there. Jo and I got to know each other by doing early morning meditations together before breakfast and on snowy walks in the woods. In our discussions, we talk about learning how to be uncomfortable, finding meaning in meaninglessness, and how to move the body in relation to the grammar of a language. I hope you enjoy this.Links Mentioned:Jo's WebsiteDenise Ferreira da Silva's On HeatM. NourbeSe Philip’s Zong!Camille T. SØSSA JØRGENSEN & GEIR TORE HOLM Considering collegial exchange, informal peer-to-peer/practice-to-practice learning, and attempts at friendship as a fundamental part of our remit, UKS introduced a new, weekly walk-in-workshop in January 2019, called HOW TO PRACTICE? Starting off the workweek every Monday morning at 10am during exhibition periods, rotating local and international practitioners in the cultural field teach their conspicuous version of this essential question, serving up their tricks and toolboxes, fears and desires, excel sheets, or yoga positions as UKS serves free coffee. For the eighth walk-in-workshop the artists GEIR TORE HOLM & SØSSA JØRGENSEN will talk about their long-term engagement with farming, landscape, food production, animals, plants, and living on the farm Øvre Ringstad in Skiptvet, Østfold. Holm (b. 1966, Tromsø, NO) and Jørgensen (b. 1968, Oslo, NO) have worked together for more than twenty five years. In 1993 they initiated Balkong, using their apartment as an exhibition space, which in turn brought up questions about what art can be. These home-based experiences led to broader activities. In 2003 they initiated, together with the two Thai artists Kamin Lertchaiprasert and Rirkrit Tiravanija, Sørfinnset skole/ the nord land in Gildeskål, Nordland, focusing on topics of nature exploitation, knowledge exchange, and small-scale architecture. #7 HOW TO PRACTICE? took place on 18.03.2019 https://www.uks.no/archive/how-to-practice/ https://www.uks.no/archive/8-htp-geir-tore-holm-sossa-jorgensen/

Often in the work of Rirkrit Tiravanija, what interests the artist is not the art in itself, but the life that unfolds around and out of it. Karl Holmqvist, whose work spans performance, poetry and fine art, is filmed as an example of a single life.

Printed Matter Live Benefit Auction Event: March 9, 6-8:30 pm Robert Rauschenberg Project Space 455 West 19th St, New York www.paddle8.com/auctions/printedmatter Printed Matter, Inc, the New York-based non-profit organization committed to the dissemination and appreciation of publications made by artists, will host a Benefit Auction and Selling Exhibition at the Rauschenberg Foundation Project Space to help mitigate damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. As a result of the storm, Printed Matter experienced six feet of flooding to its basement storage and lost upwards of 9,000 books, hundreds of artworks and equipment. Printed Matter's Archive, which has been collected since the organization's founding in 1976 and serves as an important record of its history and the field of artists books as a whole, was also severely damaged. Moreover, the damage sustained by Sandy has made it clear that Printed Matter needs to undertake an urgent capacity-building effort to establish a durable foundation for its mission and services into the future. This is the first fundraising initiative of this scale to be undertaken by the organization in many years, and will feature more than 120 works generously donated from artists and supporters of Printed Matter. The Sandy Relief Benefit for Printed Matter will be held at the Rauschenberg Project Space in Chelsea and will run from February 28 through March 9th. The Benefit has two components: a selling exhibition of rare historical publications and other donated works and an Auction of donated artworks. A special preview and reception will be held February 28th, 6-8 pm, to mark the unveiling of all 120 works and to thank the participating artists and donors. The opening will feature a solo performance by cellist Julia Kent (Antony and the Johnsons), followed by a shared DJ set from Lizzi Bougatsos (Gang Gang Dance) & Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio). The event is free and open to the public. All works will then be available for viewing at the Rauschenberg Project Space March 1 – March 9, gallery hours. All Selling Exhibition works may be purchased during this period and Auction works will be available for bidding online. Bids can be made at www.paddle8.com/auctions/printedmatter. A live Benefit Auction Event will take place March 9, 6-8:30 pm with approximately 20 selected works to be auctioned in a live format. Bidding on these works will commence at 7pm sharp, while silent bids can be made on all other Auction works. Note, highest online bids will be transferred to the room. For absentee bidding of works, please contact Keith Gray (Printed Matter) at 212 925 0325 or keith@printedmatter.org. The evening will feature a performance by Alex Waterman on solo cello with electronics. Admission is $150 and tickets may be pre-purchased here. There will be only limited capacity. Highlighted auction works include an oversize ektacolor photograph from Richard Prince, a woven canvas piece from Tauba Auerbach, an acrylic and newsprint work from Rirkrit Tiravanija, a large-scale Canopy painting from Fredrik Værslev, a rare dye transfer print from Zoe Leonard, a light box by Alfredo Jaar, a book painting by Paul Chan, a carbon on paper work from Frances Stark, a seven-panel plexi-work with spraypainted newsprint from Kerstin Brätsch, a C-print from Hans Haacke, a firefly drawing from Philippe Parreno, a mixed-media NASA wall-piece from Tom Sachs, a unique print from Rachel Harrison, a vintage xerox poem from Carl Andre, an encyclopedia set of hand-made books from Josh Smith, a photograph from Klara Liden, a table-top sculpture from Carol Bove, Ed Ruscha’s Rooftops Portfolio, as well as original works on canvas and linen by Cecily Brown, Cheyney Thompson, Dan Colen, Adam McEwen, RH Quaytman, and many others. These Auction works can be previewed at: www.paddle8.com/auctions/printedmatter In addition to auction works, a vitrine-based exhibition of rare books, artworks and ephemera are available for viewing and purchase. This material includes some truly remarkable items from the personal collection of Robert Rauschenberg, donated by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in memory of the late Printed Matter Board Member, bookseller and publisher, John McWhinnie. Among the works available are books and artworks from Marcel Duchamp, Willem de Kooning, Alfred Steiglitz, Joseph Beuys, Brigid Berlin (Polk), as well as a Claes Oldenburg sculpture, a rare William Burroughs manuscript, and the Anthology Film Archive Portfolio (1982). Additional artists’ books have been generously donated by the Sol LeWitt Estate. Works include pristine copies of Autobiography (1980), Four Basic Kinds of Straight Lines (1969), Incomplete Open Cubes (1974), and others. Three Star Books have kindly donated a deluxe set of their Maurizio Cattelan book edition. These works can be viewed and purchased at the space. For inquiries about available works please contact Printed Matter’s Associate Director Max Schumann at 212 925 0325 or mschumann@printedmatter.org. Liam Gillick. That is right, the man whose imagination can take him anywhere. A transparent master of the question of Modernity? Cat lover? Designer/author/theorist/artist/architect? The son Donald Judd never wanted? Enigma cloaked in riddle? Relational Aesthetic celebrity? All these things and more... We at Bad at Sports try and get to the bottom of Liam's magic in this hour-long interview. The last element in Liam Gillick's 4 part global retrospective, "Three perspectives and a short scenario" will run through January 10th at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art.  Accompanying that exhibition, Gillick has produced "The one hundred and sixty-third floor: Liam Gillick Curates the Collection," which is also be on view.Liam Gillick emerged in the early 1990s as part of a re-energized British art scene, producing a sophisticated body of work ranging from his signature "platform" sculptures -- architectural structures made of aluminum and colored Plexiglas that facilitate or complicate social interaction -- to wall paintings, text sculptures, and published texts that reflect on the increasing gap between utopian idealism and the actualities of the world. His work joins that of generational peers such as Rirkrit Tiravanija and Philippe Parreno in defining what critic Nicholas Bourriaud described as "relational aesthetics," an approach that emphasizes the shifting social role and function of art at the turn of the millennium. Gillick's work has had a profound impact on a contemporary understanding of how art and architecture influence, and are themselves influenced by, interpersonal communication and interactions in the public sphere. This exhibition is presented in association with the Witte de With in Rotterdam, Kunsthalle Zurich, and the Kunstverein in Munich. It is the most significant and comprehensive exhibition of Gillick's work in an American museum to date, comprising a major site-specific installation in the gallery ceiling as well as a presentation of his design and published works, and a film documenting projects from the entirety of his career. The MCA is the only American venue for the exhibition.

Art & Identity: The Artists Lecture Series

Mary Jane Jacob is Professor and Executive Director of Exhibitions at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. One of the most nonconformist U.S. curators of the last 20 years, Jacob has critically engaged the discourse around art in public spaces with such innovative exhibitions as Places with a Past, Charleston (1991), Culture in Action, Chicago (1993), Conversation in the Castle, Atlanta (1996) and Evoking History, Charleston (2001-present). Away from large-scale sculptures on public plazas, Jacob supports a form of art in public space that explicitly deals with the history and the current realties of the locations in which she works. With the book Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art, she has furthered her research into the nature of artmaking today and the forthcoming anthology, Slow: Experience into Art, will deal with the art experience and its relation to pedagogy. Jacob's lecture will draw upon her own practice as a curator; creating spaces and situations for art to be made and experienced in cities and communities, as well as in galleries. Importantly, she will ground her remarks in the work of artists who cross cultures, some following the Buddha, others reaching points of wisdom along other paths, and all of which move beyond national or ethnic identity to speak on universal terms. It will include the work of Marina Abramovic, Ann Hamilton, Alfredo Jaar, Kimsooja, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Bill Viola. January 22, 2009
