Five Habits of Extraordinary Leaders – 4

Broadcasts – Christian Working Woman

Presented by Lisa Bishop Do you express genuine appreciation for others? I am examining 5 habits of an extraordinary leader. And today is the fourth habit: show appreciation. Gary Chapman's book The Five Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace shares a statistic that 65% of North Americans reported they had not received recognition or appreciation at their workplace in the past year. And while 51% of managers believe they do a good job of recognizing employees for work well done, only 17% of employees believe their manager actually does a good job of recognizing them[1]. Clearly, something is off! Data shows 79% of employees will quit their jobs due to a lack of appreciation (Zippia.com), while employees who feel valued are motivated to do their best work[2]. How regularly do you show appreciation in the workplace? It's been said encouragement is oxygen to the soul. Just as every person has inherent value, every human being has a desire (whether they will admit it or not) to feel valued and appreciated; it's one of the deepest and most basic human needs. While it's been proven there is a bottom-line benefit to organizations for fostering a gratitude culture in the workplace, the buck doesn't stop there. As a leader, and especially as a follower of Jesus, you are entrusted with tapping into the potential of the people in your care, helping them unleash their gifts and talents. This is a different mentality than, “Just do your job.” You have a high calling for cultivating a work environment that is built on an attitude of trust and to inspire and not to embrace the old “command and control” mindset. How can you genuinely show appreciation? Don't just show gratitude for what people do, show appreciation for who they are. Be specific, rather than general, saying “Hey, good job on that project,” doesn't point out what you specifically valued. Instead, it might sound something like this. “Hey Jim, I just wanted to say I really appreciated your attention to detail on the presentation last week. You do your work with excellence, and you bring a lot of heart and passion to the team.” When showing appreciation, go beyond pointing out a person's performance to acknowledging their intrinsic value too. Dr. Paul White says, “Even the hardest heart will soften and respond to a freely given ‘cup of water' of appreciation—reviving their spirit and creating new growth.” How will you make showing genuine appreciation a leadership habit in your life? Who is someone in your workplace you will encourage this week? -- [1] Chapman, G. D., White, P. E., & White, P. (2012). The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace: Empowering Organizations by Encouraging People. Northfield Publishing. [2] Kizer, K. Live to Love Scripture Encouragement

1 John 1:4 These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete. I think the encouragement from this verse comes from something John learned from Jesus. He heard Jesus say this very same comment after Jesus gave the disciples the new commandment to love one another as He loved them (John 13:34) and that they would know when they received the Holy Spirit that Jesus was in the Father, they were in Jesus, and that Jesus was in them (John 14:20). Jesus told them that without Him, they could not bear fruit for the glory of God (John 15:5). Then Jesus told them why He had said these things. “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full” (John 15:11). In this verse we understand the excitement and joy that comes with living to love with Jesus. In this first letter of John's, he essentially encouraged his readers (and us) to obey Jesus' commands to believe in Him and love one another in the power of the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus dwelling within them. That quality of life can only happen in them if they believe in and abide in Jesus. John wanted them to know that their living to love with Jesus filled the disciples with Jesus' joy. In his third letter he put it this way. “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth” (3 John 4). So the encouragement today should travel with us as we journey through these epistles of John. All of what he wrote was to encourage them to live to love with Jesus. He fully expected God, with whom they were in fellowship, to love through them. Nothing could complete his joy more than to hear that his brother and sisters after reading his letter, walked in love. This is why I am doing this podcast! I'm encouraging all who hear to live to love with Jesus for His glory. And if you do rise to God's call to love in all that you do, nothing could make me more joyful when I come to stand before Jesus to give an account of my life. I invite you to fellowship with me by committing yourself to walk in love with Jesus, and indeed, our fellowship is with the Father and the Son, who dwells in us. We will not be disappointed on That Great Day, when Jesus comes to be glorified in the saints and marveled at by all who believe. We will be filled with joy if we are making disciples who live to love with Jesus.

And that is the topic that touches on the Employee Value Proposition (EVP). The world has changed immensely post pandemic and since remote work has been how the majority of businesses do their business now, the emotional aspect has been set aside. For example, leaders are not able to see if their employee is having a bad day at the moment, they just see the result - the inferior work they did.  Gert's guest for Episode 122 is Kevin D. An Ennis health coach is advising Clare people to assess their relationship with alcohol this Christmas. It comes as the Drinkaware Baromoter for 2023 has found that 44% of people drink alcohol "to help relax or unwind" while 43% consume it "to celebrate"" and 38% "because it's fun". The findings also highlight the negative associations we have with the substance as 55% say they drink to cope and 22% to conform or fit in. Ennis-based integrative nutrition health coach and founder of Authentic Health Samaranda Maier says when deciding whether or not to drink alcohol, we should consider the motivation behind it.

Read the full transcript here. How can people be encouraged in ways that are more natural and less manipulative to increase the amounts they give to charities? Why are arguments based on the effectiveness of charitable organizations less compelling to most people than we'd like for them to be? What percentages of a social group should be "doves", "hawks", "eagles", or something else? To what extent should our knowledge about our evolutionary history shape our values? Why are children more likely than adults to engage in prosocial behaviors towards strangers? Aside from anecdotal evidence, how do we know that political polarization in the US has been increasing over the last few decades? How can bridges of respect and trust be built between warring political tribes? How can people even begin to undertake the project of building bridges across political divides if they have no interest in understanding or engaging with the other side — especially if they believe that the other side is completely deranged, evil, or otherwise unfit to govern at any level? What is "deep pragmatism"? What might a "psychologically-informed" version of utilitarianism look like?Josh Greene is Professor of Psychology and a member of the Center for Brain Science faculty at Harvard University. One hundred years of research tells us that a bump in salary does not impact employee engagement. In fact, MIT recently published findings showing that how appreciated employees feel has three times more influence on their decision to stay or leave a job than compensation. Not only does this reduce the cost of turnover, but companies that pay attention to their human capital outperform others. Dr. Paul White joins Kevin to discuss the 5 Languages of Appreciation in the workplace. These include Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Tangible Gifts, and Physical Touch. The implementation of appreciation isn't a top-down process. It starts with education, creating a shared language among team members, and then grows naturally. It's about connecting people and recognizing them for who they are, not just their work. Clinical trials can be a ticket to better healthcare, so breaking the barriers that limit People of Color to participate is essential. In this episode of the Straight Out of Health IT podcast, Jayne Morgan, executive director of Health and Community Education at Piedmont Healthcare Corporation, has a chat with Christopher Kunney about the current lack of minority participation in clinical trials and how to overcome the obstacles that directly impact it. Diverse populations have a mistrust towards the healthcare systems as a result of multiple care disparities and events like the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Hence, how physicians approach these patients and build trust with them is incredibly important when offering research opportunities. Amongst the many effects of COVID-19, there was an increase in confidence in health providers and participation of communities of Color in clinical trials, but the challenge lies in maintaining the momentum now that the public health emergency has ended. Having established the gravity of the problem, Christopher and Jayne discuss ways to ensure equitable access to research in healthcare. Trial diversity will ensure treatment applicability for a broader range of people instead of a population predominantly composed of white men or other majority groups. Jayne explains how clinical trials offer access to tomorrow's medications and treatments. Being able to participate in a trial means having access to maximum therapy quality and attention, and in cancer trials, participation has led to increased remission rates. For her, representation is a crucial step toward rebuilding trust and moving beyond exploitation toward health equity. One of the very first things to accomplish to encourage participation from People of Color is to involve physicians who have a cultural congruence and trusting relationship with the community in leadership roles within clinical trials, and it needs to happen at all levels of research to establish cultural understanding and trust when interacting with patients. Even though community involvement through leaders, churches, and civic organizations can have impactful results, direct dialogue with physicians will ultimately open the first gates to clinical trials for diverse people. This is why Jayne encourages listeners to find providers who communicate effectively and engage in conversations with the healthcare system to understand and learn the necessary information firsthand. Tune in and learn more about the importance of diversity in research and how to open the gates of this space for everyone, regardless of their profile or background! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/christopher-kunney/support

WHY AM IN ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO BUY A HOME RIGHT NOW? When we moved her nine years ago we were able to get a really good deal on our house because the market was good, but not sizzling. We've seen what has happened since, largely driven by our booming population and insanely low interest rates. Now our growth has slowed dramatically an interest rates have risen and many, many people are working under the illusion that mortgage rates are going to drop to 2% again. I don't think they will ever, but if they do, it will be a long haul. So those two things have flipped our sellers market into a buyers market for the first time in a LONG TIME but it won't last, and by the time you see news stories about the market recovery it will be too late. NOW is the time, and buying a home is a great way to build wealth for yourself and your heirs. This is a good article from Forbes about why buying builds wealth. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you can buy a property for yourself or your landlord, either way someone is building equity in a tangible appreciating asset. Brian Murphy from Front Range Mortgage joins me today to talk about mortgage prices and why it's a good time to jump back into the market. Reach Brian by clicking here. Today I see this article that says in some neighborhoods the market has already shifted!
