What up, mate? Ben and Chris are joined by regular guest host Nick Langdon to discuss the beloved Australian classic The Castle. The film didn't make waves in 1999 when it was released in the US, so that's why we must introduce this gem to our listeners. Over time it's become popular in its depiction of a typical Aussie Battler and still has cultural staying power down undahh. As always, Nick offers a wealth of knowledge regarding Australian cinema and culture. We also talk about  Russell Crowe's early career, how Australian films differ from Hollywood's, and how important it is to be a strong parent. It's a vibe. Check out this podcast episode, HERE, that features director Rob Sitch discussing the film and fatherhood. Find Nick on LB, HERE. Blake's last few picks have been eclectic with the likes of Beowulf, Bad Boy Bubby and The Room. So when it came to this week's pick of The Castle from 1997, Chris and Dave had no idea what to expect. Was it a stich-up (no pun intended on the Director), or a potential gem? Listen to find out! The Castle was produced as a low-budget Australian comedy directed by Rob Sitch, and it became a surprise hit, gaining widespread acclaim both domestically and internationally. The production was characterized by its grassroots approach, with a focus on capturing the authentic charm and humor of everyday Australian life. Sitch and his team assembled a talented cast of actors, including Michael Caton, Anne Tenney, and Stephen Curry, who brought depth and authenticity to the characters of the Kerrigan family. The film's success can be attributed to its relatable storyline, witty dialogue, and endearing characters, which resonated with audiences and critics alike. Despite its modest budget, the production of The Castle benefited from its resourceful filmmaking techniques and creative storytelling. The film was shot on location in Melbourne and surrounding areas, utilizing real-life settings to enhance the film's sense of authenticity. Sitch and his team also employed a documentary-style approach, incorporating handheld camerawork and naturalistic performances to create a sense of intimacy and immediacy. The success of The Castle demonstrated the power of storytelling and the enduring appeal of heartfelt comedies that celebrate the ordinary joys of family and home. The Kerrigans find themselves facing eviction when the government plans to seize their property for an expansion project. Determined to fight for their home and their way of life, Darryl takes on the powerful authorities in a David-versus-Goliath battle. With the support of his quirky and lovable family, including his wife Sal and their children, Darryl embarks on a legal and comedic journey to prove that their humble abode is more than just a house—it's their castle. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

How Other Dads Dad with Hamish Blake

Rob Sitch is not only a prolific creator of some of Australia's most beloved comedy characters, TV shows and films, he is also one of the very first friends that Hamish got to see dadding up close.  Many years ago, backstage on Thank God You Are Here, and well before his own dadding journey started, Hamish started talking to Rob about his philosophies on being a parent, and so it is only fitting that Rob is on the first episode of How Other Dads Dad.   A father of 5 with 21 years of parenting under his belt, Rob shares with Hame some of his hard-earned wisdom, they discuss the things that kids never don't love, and Rob shares how parts of his own childhood inspired the now legendary Aussie Dad - Darryl Kerrigan from The Castle. In this episode of Anchored I sit down with Rob at his production house in Victoria, Australia to hear more about his inspiration for the series.

Canberra politics often seems beyond satire. So it's perhaps not surprising that Working Dog's TV show Utopia has more than once foreshadowed reality in its hilarious depictions of life in a federal authority. Rob Sitch, Utopia's co-writer and star, says he's had no need to draw on covert leaks and insights from bureaucrats for material. “90 plus percent of what we find is sitting in front of everybody. It's on the front pages.” And he's had plenty of feedback from insiders to confirm the program hits the spot. Sitch, who relishes political satire, originally studied medicine before becoming one of Australia's best loved creatives and performers. Asked about his jump from doctoring to the world of entertainment, he tells The Conversation it was “a hobby that got out of hand.” Twenty years on from directing the iconic film The Castle, Sitch bemoans the trend in Hollywood that has seen it become too reactive to demographics and economics. He says the government should consider a boost for our own film industry. “Something gets added to the culture when an Australian film pops out.”

"The whole town is over the moon." Every story has many facets, but often the big story hides some of the smaller facets. The Australian film The Dish is a perfect example of this. The big story? Apollo 11's successful mission to the moon. The small story? The Australians working at Parkes Observatory – a radio telescope in the middle of a sheep paddock – that was critical to the success of the mission and was our link to the footage we've all seen of Neil Armstrong's first steps on the surface of the moon.  Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our “It's Real Life, Jack” series with Rob Sitch's 2000 film The Dish. We talk about what a delightful film this is and how great it is learning about this small bit of history that neither of us knew. We talk about Working Dog, the creative production team behind the film, and have a brief interview with producer Tom Gleisner about how they came to tell this particular story, the nature of ‘telling the truth' in a film based on a fact and more. We chat about the actors – notably Sam Neill, Patrick Warburton, Kevin Harrington, Tom Long and Roy Billing, among others – and how they all create unique and quirky characters that work perfectly in this world. And we touch on not only Edmund Choi's beautiful, award-winning score but also the fantastic soundtrack full of great songs.  It's a wonderful film that helps one expand upon and appreciate the Apollo 11 moon landing even more. So what are you waiting for? Check it out then tune in! Pete's Trailer: Christine — "We learned the story of Christine Chubbuck in journalism school as a particularly on-the-nose cautionary tale, the story of a woman so disgruntled with the state of the media and her role in it that she elected to kill herself on-air.
