Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Just because you're successful doesn't mean everyone likes you.  In fact, success can often draw criticisms that might not be given to other performers.  In Australia, we call that the “Tall Poppy Syndrome”, where people look for reasons to bring successful people down! We look at some criticisms (not by us - mainly!), of highly successful artists and try to find a reason for them.    This month seems to have a host of rock star deaths!  In Knockin' on Heaven's Door, we mourn the passing of David Lynn Thomas of post-punk group Pere Ubu; Drew Zingg, an American blues and soul guitarist, best known for work with Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs; Joey Molland from Badfinger, and Richard Chamberlain, of Dr Kildare, Shōgun & The Thorn Birds.   Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” is Bob Marley and the Wailers' “Catch a Fire”, a landmark album that established reggae as a musical force, influencing such artists as The Clash, The Police, UB40 and Eric Clapton.  Enjoy!! References:  “Tall Poppy Syndrome”, Morrissey, “We Hate it When our Friends Become Successful”, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, YouTube, “Classic Album Review”, Baz, Barry Robinson, “The 10 Worst Bands in the World”, The Doors, Jim Morrison, Patti Smith, Rob Younger, Robbie Krieger, Ray Manzarek, Doors' Miami concert – January 1969, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, “Hell Freezes Over”, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Guns'n'Roses, Axl Rose, Slash, Motley Crue, Shakespeare - “thankless child”, U2, Achtung Baby, “With or Without You”, Adam Clayton's private parts, “Days of Innocence”, REM, Coldplay, “music for estate agents”, Oasis, Gallagher brothers, Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, “The Rest is History”, Frank Zappa, “Billy the Mountain”, “Don't You Eat the Yellow Snow”, PMRC – Parents Moral Research Centre, Tipper Gore, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl  Our email: MickandthePhatman@Gmail.com  Playlist – The music we talked about in this episode  Homer singing Kiss  Led Zeppelin's light fingers  Classic Album Reviews:  The Ten Worst Bands Ever

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! A special treat for you this episode!  Rob Younger, lead singer of legendary Australian group, Radio /Birdman, joins us in the studio to give us his thoughts on everything from music production to the influence of the Beatles on all rock music.   Rob's near-encyclopedic knowledge of the rock era is impressive, and fuels a conversation that runs the gamut from John Coltrane to scarcely-known bands of the 90's, with plenty of stops in-between.   The conversation went so long, we had to split it into 2 fascinating parts!  We had a blast talking to Rob, and hope you do, too. Playlist:  Radios AppearReferences:  Radio Birdman, New Christs, Nick Cave, Pere Ubu, influence of The Beatles, McCartney vs Lennon, Oxford Hotel

Interview by Kris PetersJJ McCann is a musician well-travelled, negotiating over 30 years in the Australian music industry with his soul and integrity intact.Better known as one of the founding members of Nunchukka Superfly and his work with The Drones, McCann has busied himself with other just as talented bands over the years, with the one common denominator being McCann's driven approach to his craft and his humble and unassuming nature.Last year McCann released his first album under the monicker of JJ McCann Transmission called Hit With Love, collaborating with legendary producer Rob Younger of Radio Birdman and the New Christs who produced every second great Australian rock record in the 80s and 90s (Died Pretty, Hard-Ons, Lime Spiders, Celibate Rifles, Hoodoo Gurus). It proved a masterstroke for McCann, who reached a much wider audience with the album and created enough quality material to still be drawing singles from the album almost 12 months later. But talk to McCann and you get the impression his days of caring about status or success in music are long behind him - if in fact they were ever there. Instead, you get an artist who creates music for the thrill and love of the final result and the opportunity to share a common love with friends.Just the way it should be.With Nunchukka Superfly finally releasing their debut album recently and about to go on tour, McCann is understandably busy these days, but not too busy to be down for a chat with HEAVY."It was officially released last year," he said of the new solo album. "It was kind of a staggered thing that was followed by a couple of film clips, with the last one coming out in March called Amphibious Skin. It's been going well. It's been released here in Melbourne on CheerSquad Records and co-released with French label Beast Records. It's the first record I've released in Australia in 14 years. Everything else I've released in Spain or France, generally because there wasn't a lot of independent labels around 15 years ago, believe it or not. It's picked up a bit since then in Australia."In the full interview, JJ talks more about Hit With Love and the writing and recording process, working with Rob Younger, what sorts of things Younger contributed to the overall sound of the album, the changing tides of music and the importance of sticking to your own path, the release of Nunchukka Superfly's debut album and upcoming shows, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Rockshow Episode 164 Radio Birdman Radio Birdman is an Australian punk rock band formed by Deniz Tek and Rob Younger in Sydney in 1974.The group influenced the work of many successful, mainstream bands, and are now considered instrumental in Australia's musical growth. Deniz Tek and Rob Younger formed Radio Birdman in mid-1974 in Sydney, having recently left their bands TV Jones and the Rats respectively. The pair sought to begin a band that would challenge the commercial mainstream and be completely uncompromising. They recruited classical keyboard player Philip "Pip" Hoyle, drummer Ron Keeley and bassist Carl Rorke. The band took their name from a misheard lyric from the Stooges' song "1970" (the actual lyric is "radio burnin'"). After being rejected many times from various venues, and having resorted to putting on its own concerts in rented garages and tiny community halls, by mid 1975 Radio Birdman found an upstairs room at the Oxford Tavern in Taylor Square, Sydney. They eventually took over its management, renaming it The Funhouse.[1] Under their management the Funhouse became a home to other outsider groups. Prior to the opening of this venue, Carl Rorke had left the band and was replaced by longtime friend of Rob Younger, Warwick Gilbert (also a former Rats member). Also to leave the band would be Philip Hoyle, though his departure was short-lived. Guitarist Chris Masuak was initially hired to replace Hoyle. Soon a small but growing subculture grew around Radio Birdman. This coincided with the beginnings of the Sydney punk scene. https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100046816942610 https://www.discogs.com/artist/257177-Radio-Birdman https://open.spotify.com/artist/4cpMQdcPKsbw2SaTjGazQf https://mobile.twitter.com/birdmanfilm https://www.songkick.com/artists/147918-radio-birdman #musicvideo #musicstudio #musiclover #musiclife #musicindustry #musiclovers #musiccover #musician #musicproducer #musicproduction #musicians #musicislife #musicartist #musicphotography #musicvideos #Music #drummer #Guitar @drummers @spotify @twitter #grammy @grammy @Australia #RadioBirdman @RadioBirdman @punk #Punk #goldalbum #Platinumalbum @Platinum @gold Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support

Radio Birdman: Radio Birdman was one of the first Australian independent bands to carry the punk label. The name comes from a misheard The Stooges lyric from the song “1970” (the actual lyric is “radio burnin’”). They formed in Sydney, 1974 with Deniz Tek and Rob Younger wanted to create a band that challenged the commercial mainstream whilst being completely uncompromising. With the addition of Pip Hoyle on keys, Ron Keeley playing drums and bassist Carl Rorke, Radio Birdman started playing DIY shows in rented garages and community spaces after being rejected from multiple venues. Once signing with Trafalgar Records, the band released their debut, 1977’s Radios Appear to critical acclaim, leading them to expand their touring circuit to include Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide. When Sire Records president Seymour Stein came to Australia to sign Brisbane punk band The Saints, he saw Radio Birdman and immediately invited them to join his label. The band moved their base of operations to London, and toured extensively in the UK and Europe, both headlining and as support for Sire label-mates the Flamin Groovies. Their overseas success was short-lived as Sire Records began having financial difficulties and were forced to drop Radio Birdman and many other bands from their label. Without a label, with no tour support and no distribution for Radios Appear, the band continued on, while suffering deteriorating interpersonal relations. Radio Birdman played one last show at Oxford University in June 1978, after which the band split up - on the eve of an explosion of independent music in Australia, which they had played a large role in creating. Recorded at The Tivoli in Brisbane on the 23rd of June 2017. Recorded and Mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 7th of January 2018. HITS: The first band we’re going to hear from have a no-nonsense name that confidently describes the caliber of songs they write. That band’s name is HITS. Having just celebrated their tenth anniversary as a band, they’ve lived more in that time than some bands would dare to imagine. With the twin guitar attack of Tamara Dawn and Stacey Coleman, vicious vocals from Dick Richards and solid backbone of Andy Buchanan and Gregor Mulvey, their live show effortlessly blow the minds of punters that come in contact with their extremely loud take on rock music. The latest record from HITS, 2014’s ‘Hikikomori’ was produced by legendary rock’n’roll figure Rob Younger, he of Radio Birdman and New Christs fame, and has been getting rave reviews from not only Australia, but Europe too. It was also longlisted for the 2014 Coopers Australian Music Prize. This particular set that we are about to listen to was captured at their 10th anniversary birthday show and is one of the finest documents of this bands live presence. Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Triffid on the 3rd of May, 2015. Zeahorse: Having played relentlessly for the last 5 years all over the east coast of Australia, Zeahorse have gained a reputation for being one of the best live bands around Australia. They were nominated for best live act in the 2013 FBi SMAC awards, and have supported many incredible acts such as The Black Angels, Them Crooked Vultures, Jello Biafra, The Mark of Cain and the Hard Ons. Their debut album Pools was released in 2013 to much critical acclaim, and went on to secure a North American release through Dine Alone Records in September last year. Many thanks to Harvey O’Sullivan from FBi Radio’s Live Feed for his assistance. Recorded & Mixed by Ben Moore @ Harvest Recordings Recorded at FBi Radio’s 10th Birthday Celebrations at Carriageworks, Sydney on the 8th of September, 2013.
