There is a divide among sustainability advocates concerning urban development. At a glance, it may seem that halting all development would be beneficial. However, John Olson urges us to look beyond the surface and consider the implications of how we develop our cities, as well as the potential consequences of stopping development altogether. He believes we need to shift the status quo mindset of development. Rapid urbanization, suburban sprawl, and the degradation of natural resources have strained infrastructure, exacerbated social inequalities, and threatened environmental sustainability. New urban planning approaches foster deeper human connections, mitigate climate change, and build communities that are resilient, equitable, and prosperous for future generations. John's passion and dedication is creating inspiring places that foster deeper connections with each other and our natural environment. With over two decades of experience integrating smart growth principles across various project types, his strength is creating innovative and sustainable solutions, engaging a wide variety of stakeholders, and leading projects from vision to implementation and beyond. John earned his Landscape Architecture degree from Kansas State University. He has a passion and vested interest in projects that enrich the Colorado Springs area in which he and his wife of over twenty years have lived and raised their family of five. His commitment extends to serving on multiple boards. Recognized for his impact, he currently serves as Chair of the Colorado Springs Urban Renewal Authority and Co-Chair of ULI Southern Colorado. He helped found the Colorado Chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism, and Colorado Springs Urban Intervention. He is an Accredited New Urbanist, Registered Landscape Architect, and LEED Accredited Professional. American farmers are using an ancient tree from India to produce beans for making protein-rich foods and biofuels. The tree is called pongamia. It is native to India, Southeast Asia and Australia. But farmers in the southern state of Florida have found the tree grows well there too. In some parts of Florida, pongamia trees have now replaced citrus trees, which have long faced major struggles with disease. Pongamia trees produce a small brown bean known as a legume. The legume can be used in the production of several products, including cooking oil and protein-rich foods. The beans can also be used to produce a biofuel, mostly for airplanes. Pongamia do well in Florida because the trees like hot temperatures and can survive in dry or rainy conditions. They also do not require special additives, called fertilizers, or chemicals to kill insects and other life that might threaten growth. And unlike fruits like oranges and grapefruit, the beans do not require teams of workers to pick. Instead, they can be easily collected with a machine that shakes the trees and makes the legumes fall to the ground. A San Francisco-based company, called Terviva, has invented a process that removes substances from the bean that gives it a bad taste so it can be used for food production. The company's founder, Naveen Sikka, told The Associated Press that Terviva has been able to offer Florida farmers a new chance to replace their failed citrus crops. Pongamia, he said, “is the perfect fit” to help them rebuild their businesses. Ron Edwards is the chairman of Terviva's board of directors. He is also a long-time Florida citrus grower. He told the AP that turning this wild tree into an agricultural success story was not easy. “There are no books to read on it, either, because no one else has ever done it,” Edwards said. In addition, he said bees and other pollinators that feed on the tree's flowers help support the local environment. Edwards added that an estimated one half hectare of the trees could provide the same amount of oil as about 1.6 hectares of soy beans. The pongamia bean also produces a high-quality protein that can be used to make many plant-based products. “There's a lot of potential for the food industry and the oil and petroleum industry,” Edwards said. Experts say the problems linked to Florida's citrus crops – disease and climate issues – have also affected most of the world's top citrus-producing nations. For example, this year's harvest in Brazil – the world's largest exporter of orange juice – is expected to be the worst in 36 years. The Brazilian citrus group Fundecitrus made that prediction after a period of major flooding and then extended dryness. But Edwards noted that climate and disease have little effect on pongamia trees. “It's just tough, a jungle-tested tree” he said. “It stands up to a lot of abuse with very little caretaking."但爱德华兹指出,气候和疾病对水黄皮树的影响很小。“它很坚韧,是经过丛林考验的树,”他说。“它在很少照顾的情况下经受住了很多考验。”Pongamia also grows well in Hawaii, where it is now being used on land where sugarcane once grew.水黄皮在夏威夷也生长良好,现在它被用于曾经种植甘蔗的土地上。John Olson is a Florida farmer who replaced his grapefruit trees with 87 hectares of pongamia. He told the AP he felt he had little choice because, “For the most part, the citrus industry has died in Florida.” Olson said his grapefruit business was a profitable operation throughout the 1980s and 1990s, although the farm was not large.约翰·奥尔森是一位佛罗里达农民,他用87公顷的水黄皮取代了他的葡萄柚树。他告诉美联社,他觉得他别无选择,因为“在很大程度上,佛罗里达的柑橘产业已经消亡。”奥尔森说,他的葡萄柚业务在20世纪80年代和90年代是一个有利可图的操作,尽管农场不大。Edwards said he is happy that pongamia trees have replaced some citrus trees in Florida. And he said he likes that pongamia oil can replace some oils that are more environmentally damaging to produce.爱德华兹说,他很高兴水黄皮树取代了佛罗里达的一些柑橘树。他说他喜欢水黄皮油可以替代一些生产对环境破坏更大的油。

John was born and raised in Cache Valley. At the age of 8, he realized that the home he lived in was peculiar. His parents still own the old farmhouse, built in the mid-1880s. Strange experiences such as phantom knocks, loud boots running the stairs, and missing objects became commonplace for him as he grew up. With each run-in with what he called the “man in the hat,” John's interest in the paranormal grew. His parents forbade him from telling anyone of his experiences to fear what others in the small community would think. He found solace in learning everything he could about his encounters from library books. As he shared his extraordinary stories, friends came to him sharing stories of their brush with the supernatural. As he reached his teen years, his friends would visit his home and have their own experiences. These strange experiences opened the door for him to tell others of his experiences. Fueled by his own experiences with the unknown, John has spent the last 25 years interviewing and documenting firsthand accounts of those who have witnessed all kinds of strange and unusual phenomena in the western United States. The Stranger Bridgerland series contains firsthand accounts of ghosts, monsters, hauntings, glitches in the matrix, Sasquatch, and UFOs

He was trying to establish himself, but quickly made friends and settled in. Then in the early morning hours of December 1, 1979, after dropping a friend off before heading to his hotel to get some rest after a night out, the 20 year old vanished along with his Maroon 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix, and was never seen again. A check of his hotel room didn't yield any clues, and it appeared Michael never arrived after dropping off his friend. What happened on the short drive from where Michael's friend last saw him to his hotel room? Was Michael targeted or stalked by someone with ill intentions, or could Michael have driven off the road and into one of the many area waterways or canals? Over four decades later, answers remain elusive. Michael's schoolmate Paige Nienaber was shocked to find out that Michael vanished without a trace, and he decided to help advocate for Michael's case, and bring attention to it. He produced an excellent Youtube video about the case which you can find here.In this episode, Paige discusses the case and his efforts to find out what happened to Michael. The Stranger Bridgerland series contains firsthand accounts of ghosts, monsters, hauntings, glitches in the matrix, Sasquatch, and UFOs.

John Olson: Dada Budapest ჯონ ოლსონი: დადა ბუდაპეშტი (ესეც მოკლე აღწერა) Today's Duende is dedicated to the poetry of John Olson; John Olson is one of the most unique American poets of our time. As his form of poetic expression, he has mainly chosen the prose poem, but despite the fact that he is sometimes associated with the branch of American surrealists, his own prose poetry is hardly similar to the more traditional forms of the prose poem. One could easily say that he has opened up a new field in this direction, where the "classical" prose poem merges with experimental essay and the pure flux of wordplay, a sort of linguistic free improvisation. For this reason, we could locate the sources of his form somewhere on the crossover of the French prose poem and the linguistic experiments of Gertrude Stein. His major new book of prose poetry is Dada Budapest (Black Widow Press, 2017).

The Grave Talks | Haunted, Paranormal & Supernatural

Growing up in a haunted house, John Olson’s initial experiences with the paranormal were vast. When you have unexplained noises, sights, and feelings invading your life on a regular basis, it's easy to accept the paranormal simply as a “part of life”. As John grew older, his understanding and quest to learn about ghosts grew deeper. This led him to investigate not only the hauntings that dotted his life but also the experiences of others who led haunted life. Growing up in a haunted house turned out to be more common than most would imagine. Today on The Grave Talks, we hear the personal haunted story of John Olson. They're father and son, bonded by war. Both of them, Marines. The father fought in Vietnam, during one of the most violent periods of that conflict. The son did the same in Iraq. For the longest time, the son only knew that his dad was Alvin Bert Grantham, or "A.B." as he's known, the wounded Marine on the tank in one of the most iconic photographs from the Vietnam War. The photo of A.B. Grantham was shot by award-winning photographer, John Olson. It was featured in the March 8, 1968 issue of "Life" magazine, and would come to symbolize the horrific fighting that took place in Hue City during the Tet Offensive. It wasn't until the son, Joshua Grantham, fought as a Recon Marine in Iraq in 2004 and 2006, that father and son would finally solve the enigma of one another, revealing the haunting wartime past that had made the father a hero to his son, and unveiling the son's reasons for following in the hero's footsteps. This is an amazing story of family, brotherhood, sacrifice, and raw human experience that we truly consider ourselves lucky to cover on the Hazard Ground Podcast! www.reconsniperfoundation.org | "Hue 1968"

More and more, I find my iPad replacing other tools – like my computer, Kindle, and even my physical notebook.     In this week's podcast episode: How to make money by goofing off. Special Announcements My  conference, the 3-Day Live Intensive, is April 5-7 in Phoenix. Get your early-bird ticket discount right now – click here. Click here to visit my speaking page and get details on my availability. Tip Of The Week How to make money by goofing off? I must be joking, right? Not at all. It's proven that our best ideas, most resourceful states, and highest periods of creativity come when we are relaxed and in “the flow”. The problem is we seldom experience this state as a conscious intention. Here's how to “goof off” productively. Spiritual Foundations The secret of becoming a better, more successful person – on automatic pilot. While I was at a conference a few weeks ago, the topic being taught was “speed to implementation”. Surrounded by a group of born achiever types, I felt swept up in the momentum of getting things done quickly. I went to my hotel room that night and furiously worked on completing a book manuscript, and by the time morning arrived my initial draft was done. Why was it that I was suddenly able, or motivated, to get the book done so quickly? Did I suddenly have abilities that I didn't have before? No. I was being carried by the momentum of the people around me. Motivated, cajoled, provoked. I was, in short, persuaded by the power of peer pressure. The people we surround ourselves with influence who we become. The point I'm trying to make is not a new one. It is simply that we tend to adopt the mannerisms, behaviors, and values of the people we spend the most time with. Want to become a better person? Be more successful? Be more punctual? Spend time with people who are more successful, more punctual, and who are in general the kind of “better person” you would like to be. “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn The interesting thing is, most of us do not consciously choose who those people are. What does the Bible say about this idea? Well we don't have to look far-in the book of wisdom known as The Proverbs, we find this… The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray. Proverbs 12:26 What if you consciously engineered being around five people who lift you up, instead of being around five people who pull you down? Feature Segment: Top 10 iPad Apps For Idea Entrepreneurs This past Sunday in church, I did the unthinkable. During the pastor's sermon, I opened up my iPad and began doodling. Heads turned. Questioning looks appeared on the faces of the people around me. Some people try to pretend they didn't notice. My wife simply nudged our friends Jim and Diane, who were sitting next to us, and shrugged. As if to say, “Well, that's our Ray.” But I wasn't ignoring the sermon or even being rude. I was taking notes in one of the top 10 apps that I use on a daily basis. My iPad has become such an indispensable tool that I even use it in church. Certainly, in my business as what I refer to as an “idea entrepreneur”, my iPad is central to my workflow. So this weeks podcast feature segment is all about the top 10 iPad apps I use in my business, and that I recommend to other idea entrepreneurs. I won't just give you a list of the apps, however. I'll also provide you with a description of how I use them, and even a few tips that may be helpful if you choose to use them as well. Omnifocus. This is my go to app for implementing GTD. It's expensive, but I still haven't found anything else I like better. And I've tried them all. Mail. This is simply the native app that comes with iOS. I've tried a few alternatives, but I really like the way Apple has implemented this app. Notifications turned off. Agenda. I find Apple's Calendar app disappointing, and learned about Agenda through Leo Laporte. I've been using it ever since, and I love it. Integrates with Google Calendar seamlessly. Mr. Reader. I track about 300 websites, mostly WordPress blogs. It's how I find new and interesting ideas, trends, and tidbits that I can share. This only takes me about 30 minutes a day, and that is all due to Mr. Reader. This app aggregates all those websites into one convenient place. Pocket. When I find something online that I want to save for later reference, I put it in Pocket. I may save notes or clippings for a blog post, a book chapter, or simply for my own reading pleasure. Evernote. Evernote is my universal filing cabinet, where I keep blog posts in progress, book outlines, swipe files, reference material, and more.It all synchronizes between my MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone. So all my stuff is available to meet anywhere, anytime. Indispensable tool. Penultimate. This is the app that left my moleskin notebook lonely and unused. It's a notetaking app, and it integrates with Evernote. Lose the paper, keep the handwriting, and remember everything. Kindle. I don't use my actual kindle device very much anymore. I carry around enough devices, and I use the Kindle app on my iPad to do most of my reading. I am considering trading my full-size iPad in for an  iPad Mini. Reason: the mini seems easier to hold for long periods of time when reading. It also takes up less room in a briefcase. Or a pocket. Downcast. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and this is the app I use to do it. I wish it had a happier name. But I couldn't be happier with the app itself. MindMeister. I mind map just about every piece of content I write, every project plan, and… well, everything.I went through most every mind-mapping app available, and there are some good ones. I finally settled on MindMeister.I like the ability to share maps, I like the  look and feel, and it exports to just about every other mind-map software format. So I can share my maps between MindMeister and MindManager (the app I use on my MacBook Pro). Bonus Apps: Olive Tree Bible Study App, Pages, Keynote. Listener Questions On this episode we heard from these listeners: Carey Green of ChristianHomeandFamily.com asked,”Are tags important to getting search engine traffic?” Beau Miles asked, “Will you be offering an audio version of your new book?” John Olson called in with a report on how he has been using my productivity tips from the podcast episode on getting a days work done in two hours, which was episode 43. I haven't been emphasizing the call in part of the show, but would love to field more listener questions and hear more of your success stories. You can leave messages here through Speakpipe, or on our phone line at (509) 713-2679. Your Feedback Do you have an idea for a podcast you would like to hear? When I was newly First Church Somerville's pastor, and had not known him very long, I asked him why he came. He said he first came because he was friends with the pastor, though he was more or less an atheist, and when he sat in the pews that first Sunday, heard the choir sing. “I could make that better,” he said to himself.
