Being music fans (especially of a....ummm...certain age), we've all been in a record or CD store as a regular. I like to think that the best record stores I've been in are like walking into Cheers – everybody knows your name, and will treat you as family, be it dysfunctional or not. Welcome to episode 183 of Love That Album. I've been in small family record stores, big impersonal chains where the staff couldn't care less what your musical interests are, specialist record stores, stores run by grumpy guts (if you're in Melbourne, you may remember a shop that was far from paradise under its original owner) and stores run by welcoming staff who want to introduce their favourite bands into your life. Record stores are not like any other capitalist venture on the planet. Yes, you pay your money and come away with an “item”. Often, though, the interaction with the guy or gal behind the counter is like a meeting of the minds as you discuss why that band's last 3 albums fell below standard of the first 5, or why the album currently on the stereo is by an unknown guy you just HAVE to give your time to. Some stores have been known to challenge customers to walk around naked (it's true!!!), while others will have staff that roll their eyes as you ask for “that album by that guy......you know who I mean....ummm” I've decided to ask a dozen of my favourite podcasters / broadcasters / record shop owners / people I respect to join me on the show to tell me about their favourite memories of being or working in a record store. Yes, it's an exercise in nostalgia, but that shouldn't be a dirty word in this case. It's an opportunity to talk about a place that makes us happy or frustrated......but it's never dull like a night out at the supermarket. The first 5 of these correspondents joining me for separate conversations are: David Kowalski – host of The Sound and the Fury Podcast Brett Vargo – co host of Only Three Lads Podcast “Farmer” John Couture – host of the Vinyl Relics Podcast Pat Monaghan – owner of Rocksteady Records Brian Nankervis – co host of Rockwiz and The Friday Revue All 5 of these fine gents very graciously gave of their time and recollections for your and my entertainment and edification. Download, enjoy, and take comfort in the fact that in 2 weeks, more is coming your way on this topic. I highly recommend you search them all out in their regular ventures...they KNOW of what they speak. Send us a textWell, this is the last episode of Season 4, and once again, it's been a ball of fun (and music). 4 years and still going strong – bigger and better than ever! We look back at “Knockin' on Heaven's Door” and "Rock News", as well as some of our favourite episodes. We recall some of the albums we've listened to (before we die), some of the shows we've seen, some of the books we've bought and some of Mick's fluffs! We also talk about what we might do next year – more interviews, more covers, maybe a list or two. So much to look forward to! Welcome to episode 172 of Love That Album. It's December, so once again, it's time for me to reach out to 5 wonderful music media people in Melbourne to discuss with me their favourite music for 2023 – new or old (but recently discovered). As per usual, these magnificent people I admire brought some great “logs to throw on the conversational fire” (to steal from David Hepworth and Mark Ellen). However, to play all 5 people on the one episode would have made this a 4 hour plus episode.....not a sin in my book, but some people prefer shows with a more digestible time frame. To that end, I present this time around 3 of my guests, and some feedback from a couple of listeners all to talk about great music of the year. Episode 173 will feature the remaining 2 guests and more feedback. This time around we will hear from Rockwiz and Friday Revue host Brian Nankervis, music journalist and author Jeff Jenkins, and owner of Melbourne's Rocksteady Records Pat Monaghan. I am thrilled that these fellow music fans and knowledgeable gents would give of their time to this little podcast. Get out your pen and paper and prepare to make a list of your next favourite albums. Part 173 with Ian McFarlane and Billy Pinnell will be out within the next week or so. Thanks so much to anyone who listened to the show, was a guest on the show, contributed conversation to the LTA Facebook group, or reached out to me directly directly over the year. More coming in 2024 (you're welcome / sorry). Also huge gratitude to my brothers and sisters over at Pantheon Podcasts....some great shows and people over there who have corresponded with me over the year – there will be some crossover shows next year. Many thanks to Christian Swain and Peter Ferioli for allowing me to swim in the Pantheon pool. Download this episode of LTA from your podcast app of choice (except Spotify). For 15 seasons and 181 episodes, Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis have been the dual hosts of 'Rockwiz', bringing their wit, charm and performance energy to Australia's legendary music quiz show. In this episode Tony chats to them about what makes a good MC, and they share tips and yarns from several decades of hosting big events. In the second half, Tony's 12 year old son Jack joins the conversation. He's a big fan of Julia and Brian (and Rockwiz), and fancies himself as a bit of an MC himself. He prepared some questions for his heroes, and it's a lovely and funny end to the episode. There's some extra Jack questions that will be in the bonus Patreon feed, and on the Speakola newsletter. If you've watched any Australian telly over the past 20 years, then you're well acquainted with Julia Zemiro. She's charmed us as the host of RocKwiz, visited famous people's childhood's in Home Delivery, and been a theatresports champion. She's Roz in the TV series Fisk, and she brought a local connection to Eurovision when hosted the Australian telecast. Above all she loves music, and it was high time I invited Julia to Take 5. I always love chatting with her, but I didn't expect some of the revelations she let drop in this conversation. About the road she took to get here, and what she's thinking about doing next. From ABBA to Jacques Brel to Everything Everything, this is a beautiful capture of an extraordinary human's story so far. “Fibromyalgia doesn't really work with the hours and lifestyle the music industry demands,” says Cassie Walker who has two decades of experience in the live music scene and music media. From tour management, DJing and interviewing talent, Cassie has worked across most aspects of the music industry. She is also co-host of the music podcast ‘Dug By Us'. She has worked at heavy hitters like TripleM abd Double J, and has been on Rockwiz to name a few! At the same time, Cassie lives with the chronic illness Fibromyalgia, which is categorised as widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue as well as sleep, memory and mood issues. It wasn't until an intuitive doctor diagnosed her correctly did Cassie understand why she's felt ‘always sick', and started to realise the extent that mental illness was also affecting her life. Cassie is today's guest on our radio show Brainwaves and will talk about fibromyalgia, mental health and the music industry, how to say "no", and adjusting to and gaining acceptance of living with a chronic illness including advocating for change to attitudes towards mental health in the music industry. On Todays episodes I have one of my favourite personalities 'Julia Zemiro.' 'Julia' is a French-born Australian television presenter, radio host, actress, singer, writer and comedian. She is best known as the host of the music quiz and live performance show 'RocKwiz' which now has a new home on Foxtel! 'RocKwiz' airs Friday's at 7.30pm on 'FOXTEL' and 'On Demand.' If you have never seen it before make sure you check it out. Julia a phenomenally entertaining and joy to watch. Plus if you love music - you will adore this show. We will discuss her influences and find out who particularly she looked up to in her early days. I will ask about how 'RocKwiz' got rebooted for 'Foxtel?' Julia explains how the role came about and how her relationship with co host Brian Nancurvus has evolved. Plus we will some exclusives on the new series of 'RocKwiz' including some tie bits regarding the guests like 'Ben Lee,' 'Tina Arena' and 'Jimmy Barnes.'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello my friends, coming to you today with a very special episode. I was lucky enough to catch up briefly with one of our favorites on this show, Ashley Naylor while he is out on tour with Australian legendary singer-songwriter Paul Kelly. Hearing about the sad passing of Jeff Beck back on January 10th I knew straight away that I wanted to pay tribute to him on this podcast. I thought who better to help me do this than Ashley Naylor who is one of Australia's most accomplished guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. Whether you know him from Melbourne Rock trio EVEN, Marshmellow Overcoat, or maybe you have seen him play guitar with Paul Kelly, Bob Evans, The Church, or in the Rockwiz house band, The Ronson Hangup and many more. No doubt Jeff Beck is one of the electric guitar's most prolific innovators, and with a career as sprawling as his we could have easily recorded a massive episode. I want to thank Ashley for his time and insight on this episode. It's always a pleasure having him on Foxx on the Wire. And, thank you Jeff Beck for an amazing career and always pushing the limits on the guitar and being such an innovator - RIP. I hope you all enjoyed this episode check out the video version here at Foxx on the Wire YouTube Channel. See you again soon. Craig 'Acoustic Foxx' acousticfoxx.com.au

She rocks our world as host of Rockwiz, and for years brought the spectacle of Eurovision to Australia. That's right! The incredible, inedible Julia Zemiro has home delivered herself onto our death trap of an island! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
How did musician Ella Hooper fall into the heady world of wrestling? Why is a former State Premier struggling with USB chargers? And should Sammy J finally embrace the air fryer? Plus a tribute to the Rolling Stones' Charlie Watts.

Popular host of RockWiz, Home Delivery and the new series ‘Australia’s Biggest Sing-a-long’, Julia Zemiro has become a much-loved star of Australia’s small screen. Not bad for a girl who moved here from France when she was only two. In their chat, Julia shares with Matt why working in her father’s restaurant gave her the inspiration for presenting, and what was the first album she ever bought.
This week: Adamhfoto joins the Doc to review new-old stock from vowel-dodging sadboi The Weeknd and Pitchfork faves Greta van Fleet. The tables are turned on Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis who are more used to asking the questions than answering them. Darren is teaming up with other aussie rockers for a one off The Beatles, Abbey Road Tour around Aus. In October 2019 The Beatles opus Abbey Road returned to #1 around the world, 50 years after its release, cementing its place as arguably the greatest album of all time. In August 2019, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, some of Australia's most respected musicians and members of iconic groups, collectively known as ARC — Kram (SPIDERBAIT), Mark Wilson (JET), Davey Lane (YOU AM I) and Darren Middleton (POWDERFINGER), brought The Beatles' most audacious creation to life on stage, performing Abbey Road in full, from start to finish, followed by a second set comprising of a selection of hits spanning the breadth of The Beatles’ career and catalogue. The reaction was momentous: sold-out shows, rapturous reviews and standing ovations every night. To meet with the incredible demand and to celebrate the album returning to #1, the band are heading back out on the road for a final run of shows. Joining ARC live on stage will be special guests Linda Bull (The Black Sorrows, Vika and Linda Bull), Ash Naylor (Paul Kelly, Even and Rockwiz) and James Fleming (Eagle and the Worm, Bob Evans). Darren Middleton is the guitarist and songwriter for one of the most successful Australian rock bands of the past two decades, Powderfinger, and now successful solo artist. We talk about this amazing collaboration and tour, what is and isn't true about Darren online and, of course, Powderfinger. For more details on the tour, go to: livenation.com.au
Direct from Australia, Claudia Nankervis, who by the way, is not my first guest from the 'land down under.' That distinction goes to her filmmaker mom, who I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing a while back. Her dad, by the way, Brian Nankervis, co-hosts a RocKwiz, a popular tv music show back home. Needless to say Claudia was introduced to the arts at a young age and she's capitalized on that. She's worked in radio, interned at a film production company in NYC and worked at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. She currently co-hosts a podcast and is developing a web series.

We've broken style in this week's Mind Your Own Retirement podcast, but that just means you get to spend a little more time with actor, writer, comedian and quizmeister Brian Nankervis. You may know Brian as co-host of the ABC's The Friday Revue, or from RocKwiz, Hessie’s Shed, Hey Hey It’s Saturday or as his alter ego, street poet Raymond J. Bartholomeuz. Well, after today, you’ll know a whole lot more about him, as he regales Deeksie and Kaye with heart-warming tales of his childhood to what he’s up to these days and the secret to his seemingly endless well of happiness. The team also talks about timing your retirement, including how to plan and transition into your post-work years, and preventing the one thing that can really ruin your holiday.
You will recognize the wonderful Julia Zemiro from the telly. She is an actress, radio & television presenter, singer, writer and comedian. The gal can really do it all! Hosting shows like RocKwiz, Thank God You’re Here, Eurovision and Home Delivery, Julia has experience for days, and she is every bit the warm, friendly and funny woman you expect her to be. I first met Julia when my husband Guy ventured off to Vienna for Australia’s very first entry into Eurovision where Julia was hosting along side Sam Pang. I don’t think I’ve ever had a more fun time in all my life! It’s an experience that will stay with me forever. What I noticed about Julia from that trip was her commitment to the job. She was so professional and brilliant at what she does. Her most recent role has seen her become the Artistic Director for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival – the world’s largest cabaret festival – go Adelaide – who knew! It’s a role she is very proud of and you can see she is having a ball being involved. At the core of this already very impressive human, is a smart, endearing woman who really knows who she is. She has held her position in career and life by empowering others in her industry, saying no even when it’s hard to, and showing up to every job and situation just as she is – her true authentic self. She was all in on our conversation. Her offering was generous and honest and I learned so many life lessons just listening to her. I had an absolute hoot chatting with Julia – I could have honestly stayed all day. Here is Julia Zemiro for Tea with Jules the Podcast.

Love That Album episode 120 is ready for your aural gratification. It’s December, so as is the annual tradition, I provide for you the first of two programs where I ask some wonderful fellow music lovers to give their opinions as to the great first time listens of the year. I know most people like to contemplate the greatest music released over the previous 12 months, but I like to ask my guests to talk about the best albums they heard for the first time over the past year – regardless of when it was released. That way there’s plenty of scope for recommendations of things you may have missed. I am thrilled that returning from last year are music journalist and author Jeff Jenkins, broadcaster and podcaster Billy Pinnell, and rock historian and author Ian McFarlane. Also taking part for the first time in a few years is Rockwiz co-host and adjudicator Brian Nankervis. These four fellows are inspirations to me. They listen to plenty of music and I just know that there is enough variety in their picks for something to appeal to you or for you to nod your heads wisely in agreement with their selections. Huge thanks to them all for the giving of their time to this podcast. The second episode with music recommendations will come in January 2019 when I will be joined by my son Max (an accomplished musician and keen devourer of new sounds) to have an across-the-kitchen table discussion as to our faves for 2018. You can download all episodes of the podcast from Spotify, iTunes, Stitcher or from the website at http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com (or just type it into your podcast app of choice). Jeff’s weekly columns can be read in The Music and you can hear him every month on Radio 774 and 3RRR’s The Australian Mood. You can (and should) subscribe to Billy’s podcast The Music Show with Billy Pinnell (https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/the-music-show-with-billy-pinnell/id1084610942?mt=2) as well as hearing him on Sundays on 3AW. Alan Brough has demonstrated his vast music knowledge & passion for years, most famously as team captain in Spicks & Specks. Name me someone more qualified to select three songs for our Ever-growing Playlist of Joy! I'll wait...More recently, Alan has turned his hand to writing books for children aged roughly 10-12. Charlie and the War Against the Grannies was released last year; the next in the series, Charlie and the Karaoke Cockroaches, is released on June 27th. I'm fascinated with the advice he received while learning to write this style: to find your inner 12 year old. The ability to channel your younger self is something I hold in high regard and is potentially the key to creating a smile, a song, or in Alan's case, a series of novels!Alan still listens to new music on a very regular basis and you may be surprised with the songs and artists he mentions. He certainly is a Song Nerd and I thoroughly enjoyed spending time discussing various music, the smell of old record stores and how to earn respect of the staff, the benefits of persistence when listening to music you may not like, the attitude of punk... we cover plenty. It was also great to get an insight in to what it was like to work on Spicks & Specks, and surprising to hear that at times he and ABC staff didn't think he was qualified to perform the role he did so successfully.Join us as we ramble through any manner of things that make he and I happy. I'd love to know which nuggets of info or inspiration you enjoy or learn.Have an awesome day.Hit me up @ TheSongNerd

Julia Zemiro has been amongst the top entertainers in Australia for over a decade. After an introduction via stage theatre, TV sketches, radio work and all sorts of performing, she is more likely best known as the host of music trivia TV show RocKwiz, or SBS' coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest. More recently she has shared the story of many other famous Australians and their childhoods, via the ABC series Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery. So it's absolutely awesome for me to actually be asking her the questions. We pack so much in to this amazing chat. Dancing alone, record stores which no longer exist, Scandinavian tax. Does Julia still want this career in 5 years' time? Did her parents encourage her to study acting? How did she score the gig as RocKwiz host? Who's looking good for 2016 Eurovision? And always the first question in the Kids Love Balloons podcast... What makes her happy? If you download the apps, you can subscribe through iTunes and also follow the podcast at Whooshkaa, where you'll be kept in touch with new episodes as they're published. If you love it, share it! Thanks for your support. I hope you can do something today that makes you happy. Co-creator and co-host of RocKwiz, comedian, writer and producer Brian Nankervis joins host Jeremy Dylan to explain his hair and go deep on Van Morrison's classic 1968 album "Astral Weeks". Why did Brian's mother love the song "Madam George"? What was the weird, lethal and sometimes violent backstory to the album's recording? How did Brian discover the album as a teenager? How does the jazz influence give the album a unique sound? Which track did Brian always skip? What did the recording process have in common with Bob Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde"? Plus, Brian gives a sneak preview of the upcoming guests on the new series of RocKwiz, which kicks off on SBS on Saturday 30 May at 8.30pm. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music.Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos. 1968 arrived and The Byrds were not the same lineup that had produced the jangly folk-pop their fans had grown to know and love. Down to Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, they recruited Kevin Kelley and Gram Parsons to their ranks. Parsons convinced the group to do an all country record called Sweetheart of the Rodeo, now cited as a big influence on country rock. This was not The Byrds as we’d heard them before – although they were never going to desert their Bob Dylan covers. For episode 26 of Love That Album podcast, I am privileged to be joined by Rockwiz host, Brian Nankervis to discuss this important record. Was this a country-rock record or pure country? As rock fans, would we be paying attention to it today if it had not been a Byrds album? Was McGuinn taking the piss out of a Louvin Brothers song? Did The Band or The Byrds interpret Dylan better? Brian and I discuss all this and more on the show. For any listeners outside of Australia who haven’t had the good fortune to seeBrian’s show Rockwiz, you can catch recent full episodes online at http://www.sbs.com.au/rockwiz/ (and if you’re a rock trivia buff and a comedy fan, this is ESSENTIAL viewing) Eric Reanimator joins us again to discuss (appropriately enough) the “Honky Tonk Heroes” album by Waylon Jennings. With Jennings’ very direct connection to early rock and roll, there’s ample evidence that country and rock are a great fit. Download the show either from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com or search for “lovethatalbum” in the itunes store. Send any feedback to rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au – either written or mp3. I’d love to hear anything you have to say about the show or your thoughts on an album you really llove. Join the facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum
Big show. Brian Nankervis from Rockwiz joins us via the telephonic machine to talk about his involvement in TV history. We each take a turn in getting angry through some Crap TV, reviews of Penn & Teller: Bullshit and the Lady Voldemort. Our ending is very APT and compelling. Listen for clues and help solve […]
