(S4 Ep15) Pink Floyd-Pipers at The Gates of Dawn with guest Mark BlakeReleased August 4, 1967, Recorded February 21-May 2, 1967 (EMI) Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) is Pink Floyd's debut album, largely shaped by Syd Barrett's visionary, whimsical songwriting and experimental approach to psychedelia. Combining surreal lyrics with complex musical arrangements, the album became a defining work of the British psychedelic scene. Tracks like "Astronomy Domine" and "Interstellar Overdrive" showcase the band's innovative use of studio effects and improvisation. At the same time, songs such as "Lucifer Sam" and "Matilda Mother" blend folk influences with dreamy, eccentric storytelling. The album's experimental nature and Barrett's increasing mental instability, worsened by heavy drug use, marked the band's transition from a psychedelic force to something more expansive. Despite its initial mixed reception, Piper is now a cornerstone of rock history. It reveals the early creativity of a band destined for greatness but also foreshadows the tragic unraveling of Barrett's role, paving the way for Pink Floyd's future with David Gilmour. Signature Tracks: "Astronomy Domine," "Lucifer Sam," "Flaming"Full Album: YouTube, Spotify Playlist YouTube, Spotify

Welcome back to the studio. This is My Day of Play, where you're taken into the real events and actions of how it happens long before the process of editing or cleaning up. The original purpose of these episodes was to give my broadcasting students something to edit, to practice with and to call their own. Then I realized that you are just as important. Share the reality of how it really went. We begin things with realistic author Amy Wilson whose new book is titled Happy To Help. Dealing with people who do things differently. Our second of three conversations will be with actor Luke David Blumm from the hit movie Lost On A Mountain In Maine. Then we'll wrap things up with music historian Mark Blake who shares with us the many lives of the band Fleetwood Mac. This is My Day of Play. Completely unedited in the way of meeting the wizard behind the curtain. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
It's hard to believe 2024 is coming to an end and that The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast is now in its 5th year of broadcasting our love for rock music into the world!! 2024 was an amazing year for the show which boasts the most episodes we've ever done in a year (64) and an amazing array of album reviews, concert reviews, and extraordinary guests. As we have in the past, we've broken it down into 2 shows - Part 1 is about all the albums we've reviewed and all the authors and podcasters who came on our show. Part 2 (out next week) looks back on the live concerts & movies we discussed and the 15 artists & legends we welcomed on the show. We tend to cover albums near a major anniversary (25th, 30th, 40th, 50th, etc) with the newest celebrating its 20th (American Idiot by Green Day) and several turning 55 (Abbey Road by The Beatles, Blind Faith debut, In The Court Of The Crimson King). We may review a double diamond selling classic one week and cult favorite that maybe scratched its way to gold status. But we reflect on all of them and then make our personal Top 5 lists of the albums we reviewed that we liked best. We also welcomed authors who've written some amazing books like Mark Blake and Mick Wall to share some stories along with podcasters who share our passion and knowledge for rock music. Our monthly First Concert Memories series gives people the chance to share special nights in their rock n roll journey that made them fans! Like Markus "The Darkus" Goldman of WMMR and The Imbalanced History of Rock Podcast sharing his experience with U2 Live at Red Rocks in 1983. Or Brian Colburn of My Weekly Mixtape talking about seeing Blues Traveler in NYC just months after 9/11 and finding the crowd was ready for some healing and good times. Send us a textWell, this is the last episode of Season 4, and once again, it's been a ball of fun (and music). 4 years and still going strong – bigger and better than ever! We look back at “Knockin' on Heaven's Door” and "Rock News", as well as some of our favourite episodes. We recall some of the albums we've listened to (before we die), some of the shows we've seen, some of the books we've bought and some of Mick's fluffs! We also talk about what we might do next year – more interviews, more covers, maybe a list or two. So much to look forward to! Kirk just finished reading Mark Blake's "Dreams: The Many Lives of Fleetwood Mac," so in this episode, Kirk and Paul talk about Fleetwood Mac. Then they do a music trivia quiz.
Fleetwood Mac have to be about the most interesting rock band in the history of the genre. Born out of 60s blues with the legendary John Mayall, transformed into the ultimate California Cool blockbuster band of the 70s, evolving into pop & MTV stars in the 80s and then reclaiming their thrones in the late 90s and 2000s, the tale of this band is worth telling. That's why we invited seasoned rock writer Mark Blake on to discuss his fabulous new book Dreams - The Many Lives of Fleetwood Mac. Mark not only details all the lineup changes and different chart successes of the band but also takes us backstage to witness all the many relationships and broken hearts within the band. Not just written as a narrative, the book has small, easy to digest sections about the different incarnations of the band and the stories behind the songs and albums. He offers bios of every person who ever played in the Mac, even those that were there a short time or had a small influence on their sound. And of course, Mark details the intrigue of the personal relationships and hookups of the band which are unique in the world of rock n roll. He shines some light on some things we knew a little bit about and shows that the bonds and commitment to the band are so deep that no matter who gets kicked out or is broken hearted, the band continues on. A great read and perfect companion for listening to the amazing catalog of Fleetwood Mac as you can learn the history while enjoying the music. Available on Amazon and any quality book store. Mark Blake calls Dreams: the Many Lives of Fleetwood Mac a “mosaic biography”, their almost six-decade saga presented as a series of enthralling short stories with titles like ‘Mick Fleetwood's Great Epiphany' and ‘Rumours: A Doomed Romance in Six Acts'. It opens in fact with a “cast of characters”, the 18 one-time members, as if dramatis personae in a play, a play that gets more outlandish and dumbfounding with every new discovery and much of it based on his interviews and meetings with most of them (including Peter Green). A few highlights here … … how Stevie Nicks arrived as the spare part of a package deal and rose to become indispensable. … the fake Fleetwood Mac and the Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green impersonators (which involves an egg and potato farmer from Essex). … why you should watch the Tusk video repeatedly (and its ruinous cost). … Bill Clinton, Daisy Jones & the Six, the dancing pony, Guardians of the Galaxy and other key factors in the return of the Mac. … from model to muse to psychotherapist, the story of the real life Black Magic Woman. … “Oh Lord, she's writing another song.” … internal romantic tangles that give their music a poignancy. … the horrors of Kiln House. … Lyndsey Buckingham's Armani/Clash episode. … Stevie's love affair with Derek Taylor who then had to promote a slow-selling album containing a secret song about it. … Mick Fleetwood, “old ham”, drag act, compulsive show-off, unsuitable band manager. After 30 years of interviews with Queen's gatekeepers, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, Mark Blake has written a new book called Magnifico!: The A to Z of Queen. Two decades after Freddie Mercury's death, the band is enjoying a "second coming" style revival, as seen in the phenomenal success of the movie Bohemian Rhapsody and the excitement over the brand new single "Face It Alone", featuring Freddie's vocals. In 132 stories, anecdotes, and observations, Mark addresses Freddie's early life to show why the story of Queen is really the Freddie story. With never-before-heard information, Magnifico! is a deep dive for the Queen aficionado and also breezily accessible for the reader who would like to dip into the many stand-alone stories.

When I was a young teenager, just getting into music, I would be in record shops and find myself drawn to the strangest of record sleeves. A prism refracting a rainbow. Mermaids crawling over rocks. A man shaking another man's hand, one of them on fire. And my personal favourite, two men on a beach, their heads actually big toes, with a goat behind them. But of course! I didn't know who any of the bands were at the time, but those sleeves made my mind race and helped me form an opinion of whether I might like the record or not before I'd even heard it. If only I'd had a copy of Us and Them: The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis, the new book by acclaimed prog scribe Mark Blake, which tells the extraordinary story of the legendary design house that moulded the iconography of rock - Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Genesis, Black Sabbath and of course Pink Floyd - between the late 1960s and the early 1980s. Though it's not out for a while, February 2nd, 2023 in fact, I thought I'd give Mark a bell to talk about what to expect from the latest Nine Eight release. I wasn't disappointed. (Pssst. In this week's episode, I talk again with Mark Blake, biographer of Peter Grant, about what happened to Led Zeppelin after Led Zeppelin. Photo by Ross Halfin.[/caption] TEXT DISCUSSED
Nobody lived the rock n' roll lifestyle like the manager of the band. Which band? All of them. Unfortunately we don't have time to cover every rock manager ever, so today we focus on Peter Grant, manager of Led Zeppelin. And speaking of unusual lifestyles, when you're in the mob you have to choose your words and company carefully, so why Gianni chose to tell us about his life is a mystery.
