We had an amazing chat with Casey Neill about his latest release "Time Zero Land," sequencing the album, and something music fans should never do! Portland, Oregon-based songwriter Casey Neill talks about time zero land (released July 26th on Fluff & Gravy Records). This album follows last fall's Casey Neill & the Norway Rats' Sending Up Flares, and includes two outtakes from those band sessions. Neill engineered the rest at his home studio and plays the lion's share of the instruments. It's a dreamy affair with sonic homages to Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, Sade, the acoustic side of Rust Never Sleeps, and the Brit-folk pioneered by Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson, and June Tabor. One of the things people often say about the Norway Rats is how their music defies easy genre categorization and while Sending Up Flares leans into the fruits of that collaboration, time zero land embraces the influences and craft songwriting that has been at the core of Neill's work. A prolific songwriter and road warrior since the late 1990s, Americana and Scots/Irish-folk influences have often underscored his songwriting. Sending Up Flares hints at a European influence too, with songs that channel everything from the cinematic sweep of golden-era U2 to the dark, complex alt-rock of PJ Harvey. If time zero land is intimate and largely acoustic, then Sending Up Flares is broad, eclectic, and every bit as explosive as its title. A four-piece string section (Bizarre Star, arranged by Kyleen King) adds a symphonic punch to “How Beautiful Am I?,” the album's tribute to Marianne Faithfull. Synths, stacked vocal harmonies, and burbling electronics run throughout “Fall Into Forever,” bringing to life the song's bizarre storyline involving a Tokyo typhoon, Dante's Paradiso, and pop star Britney Spears. Together, these 11 songs shine new light on a band who, after more than a dozen years together, have arrived somewhere singular and startlingly unique. We discuss what it's like being part of the Star Wars cinematic universe, why Tom Waits is Galen's all-time favorite artist, the long-ago arthouse vibe of the film, what works and doesn't in the film, how Waits slowed down his voice in the film to create unease for the audience, Waits' original stage play, the jarring interstitial moments in the film, musicians Marc Ribot and Ralph Carney, the acting of Tom Waits, the early traditional albums of Waits, why it's so hard to find the film, Film Noir fixation, how Waits has influenced Galen's creative process, Rust Never Sleeps, the staging and lighting decisions for the film, what songs were sadly excluded from the film, dancing in movie aisles, the growth and journey of Waits' Frank character, Robert Wilson, the lack of documentation of Waits' visual work and stage performances, and even Tom Waits' lawsuit against Doritos. So get your tickets early, before the usher waltzes you away, on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!!GALEN HOWARD:https://www.galenhoward.com/https://www.instagram.com/galenhoward/?hl=en Click here to get EXCLUSIVE BONUS WEEKLY Revolutions Per Movie content on our Patreon Hosted on Acast. Well, it's definitely better to burn out than to fade away when it comes to our Neil Young album ranking extravaganza. Our journey through the past may end here at "Rust Never Sleeps", but ol' Neil's still flying down the road like the hurricane that he is. Long may your run, Neil. Long may you run.

Neil Young, Talking Stick Amphitheater, Phoenix, AZ, 4/27/2024RAGGED GLORYMaybe Neil Young isn't as spry as he used to be, but who is? At 78, to be playing hard core rock with the passion he displays isn't only a goddam miracle, it's a revelation. And, just like young Micah Nelson, who filled in for Nils Lofgren (who's on tour with his other Sensei, Bruce Springsteen) to jam with Crazy Horse stalwarts Billy Talbot on bass and Ralph Molina on drums - demonstrates a generational melding that gives hope to us aging rockers. So, also when my son suggested that he and I fly to Phoenix to catch Neil's latest (I won't say last because who the fuck knows) tour, I gratefully accepted the familial love that was being offered. And, what a show it was! The opening act of Reverend Billy and the Church of the Stop Shopping Choir was a weird, trippy, and funk-fueled way to begin the evening. But since combining positive energy against Climate Change with tornado-like rock and roll force is Neil's thing, it didn't surprise me that he recruited this legendary street performer to be his emissary. The early spring evening temp in Phoenix was perfect, and Neil was in a generous mood to give this fans what they craved - the golden oldies from Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Zuma, and Rust Never Sleeps - with a short acoustic interlude playing Comes a Time and Heart of Gold (which everybody sang along to). It felt like a fucking campfire. And, looooong kick ass jams, which is what my son was craving. Down by the River and Cortez the Killer were at least 15 minutes each. And, what Neil may have lost in dexterity, he more than makes up for with heart-tugging, sonic crunching lyricism. For my money, he's one of the best rock guitarists who ever slung an axe. There are compensations to getting older; one of which is sharing your heroes with your children, and having them love them along with you.

This week on the podcast, Jackie, Jonny, and Ty are joined by the extremely talented and hilarious comedian, songwriter, and musician extraordinaire, Harris Anderson! Harris brought in Neil Young's amazing 1979 album "Rust Never Sleeps" and in a shocking turn of events, the gang actually discussed music this time. This almost never happens. In addition to Mr. Young, they also dive deep into the comedic process and all the many ups and downs (a lot of downs) that comes with it. Harris is a multi-talented artist and an even better person, and this Saturday (August 5th, 2023) he is taping his first ever special live at The MOTN in East Van, and you all should be there. If you need further convincing, just check out his 2018 album "Above and Beyond", his 2022 EP "Songs No One Asked For", or his 2021 single "Joe Rogan". He's a busy guy! WASTOIDS is coming to our favorite streaming service, Night Flight Plus, on September 30th, with a four-episode anthology series baked and fried in the Sonoran Desert and New York City. Featuring some of our favorite live performances from bands like Wednesday, Supercrush, Portrayal of Guilt, Reptaliens, and more, oddball skits, video segments, demented fun, WASTOIDS lo-fi fever dream, available only on Night Flight Plus. And because we're so excited, we figured we'd celebrate with Mr. Night Flight himself, Stuart S. Shapiro. He launched his career as a concept promoter and independent film distributor in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, working with movies like TunnelVision and Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps. In 1981, he created Night Flight, ushering in a pre-MTV vision that encompassed everything from dubbed out reggae to anarchic punk rock, debauched heavy metal, and sleek new wave. He's also the author of a book—IDENTIFi YOURSELF: A Journey In Fuck You Creative Courage. In 2016, he relaunched Night Flight as a streaming channel, packed with hundreds of wild horror and sci-fi flicks, a huge library of music docs, original Night Flight programming, and now, WASTOIDS.

Split Picks wrestles with an all-time great concert film from Neil Young and a comedy with a complicated history. When he's not behind the camera, director Bernard Shakey spends his time as a Canadian-born rock 'n' roll star who goes by the name Neil Young. Split Picks returns to look at two films directed by Shakey, with Breanna McCann stopping by for the first time, and Bennett Glace returning for yet another episode. They discuss all things Neil Young, Crazy Horse, and the passion projects Young directed as his alter-ego. Rust Never Sleeps (1979) stands tall among the finest concert films ever made. With a stage full of comically oversized props set by Roadeyes, Young begins solo and runs through the highs of his career before Crazy Horse joins him to debut some classic songs. Each shot of the film is near-iconic and its setlist will fulfill any Young fan's requests. Taking cues from Japanese horror films, The Wizard of Oz, and Jerry Lewis, Human Highway follows a small group of workers at an auto shop and diner who all have dreams of getting out, or at least winning the local talent show at the nuclear power plant. It just so happens to be the last day on Earth. Human Highway flopped when it came out, but a vastly improved director's cut has given it new life. Listen to the episode to see which film reigns supreme, and why after all this Bennett's biggest question is why didn't Neil Young star in more comedies?
Live from the No Panic Zone—I'm Steve Gruber—I am America's Voice—God Bless America—God Bless You and let's do this! This is the Steve Gruber show— the Ultra MAGA express train to truth! Get on lets roll! Here are three big things you need to know right now— ONE— Russia is losing in Ukraine—and they are also running out of soldiers and missiles—depending on who you trust on the matter— TWO— News today—of yet another Democrat Senator suffering a stroke—that will leave him out of action for at least a week or two—what is going on with so many Dems stroking out? THREE— The babies of the nation are screaming again today—because the lack of baby formula nationwide is hitting home OR maybe it's because Joe Biden is President which would make most grown men cry—Just not me—it makes me angry— and it makes me steadfast and I want you to embrace the same resolve I have today —because my friends we are not going to take back this country sitting on the damn couch! We must stand up—we must be proud and we must be heard! Are you with me? It is time to stand up and be heard my friends—it is time to tell Joe Biden—Bernie Sanders—Nancy Pelosi—Barack Obama—AOC—The squad— and the rest of the Socialists clamoring to put the globalists in charge of the United States—we are not buying it— not one bit— The laundry list of failures grows by the day—the failing economy—and the soaring inflation—driving average gas prices above $6 a gallon in California—and above $5 dollars a gallon in several more states— We are truly at a watershed moment my friends and the question you have to ask—is are you going to sit there and run your mouth—and tap out mean messages on social media—or are you going to get into the arena—just like the 26th President of the United States—Teddy Roosevelt talked about— Are you willing to roll up your sleeves—get dirty—get knocked down and get back up? Because I can guarantee you this—I have been watching the left my entire life—and they never quit—no matter how badly they get crushed in elections like 1994 or 2010—they re-group and they start leaching back into the national conversation again— Like your favorite leftist whack job and mine—Neil Young told us—Rust Never Sleeps—and neither do socialists—they will be putting together new rent-a-riots for this coming weekend—to declare America a horrible—racist and unfair place—while at the same time rationalizing the dismemberment of full term babies as somehow protected under the Constitution— they will do that for political power—because they have no shame— It is time my friends to reject the failure of this President and his administration to make sure there is enough formula to feed our nation's children— and enough strength to take this nation back— It's time— We must reject gas prices at all time record highs while the socialists are crushing the American energy sector –that should be setting the standard for the rest of the world— Reject censorship—human trafficking—a dishonest national media—an unchecked invasion at the southern border— Its time to say we will not allow you to teach our kids to hate each other amy more—we will say no to defunding the police and weak willed George Soros prosecutors—who release violent criminals and step aside as violent crime explodes and blood runs in our streets like never before— We will not blindly follow you to war in Ukraine, Somalia or anywhere else—we reject the Ministry of Truth and the idea that the government can do anything better than the rest of us—except to build machines to kill—on a mass scale— We flatly reject government surveillance of our phones, our computers, our cars, our bank accounts and our lives—back off—because we have had enough— We will not sit here quietly while you destroy the American farm and the American family— we will not be intimidated by your thug tactics or your bogus slogans—or your big lies— We demand voter ID—poll watchers—and accountability at every level—we will fight back against your insanity—and we will have election integrity— And we will defend The United States of America—at every turn—no matter what it takes—we will defend the right to free speech—the right to bear arms—the right to be free of government intervention in our lives—and we will treat the Constitution of this nation as it should be treated —as the greatest document for human freedom and liberty in the history of the world—because it is—and we all know that! We will not stand here and let you divide us anymore—and we will reject those that try— We are many things—we are black and we are white—we are men and women—short and tall—some are thin and some are not—we come from backroads and back alleys—and we are in this together— Because my friends—we are Americans—and that means something to me—in fact beyond God and my amazing family—it means everything— So, I say to you again—are you with me? Do not allow yourself to get down—I need you now more than ever—I need you to save this nation with me—together we can do this—we can rise above and we can reject the socialists in favor of that shining city on a hill—because that is today—more than ever what America still is—and always will be—BUT we must defend her from those that would tear her down— Are you with me? Ask yourself— are you with me?
In June of 1979 Neil Young & Crazy Horse released Rust Never Sleeps. Borrowing the Gerald Casale & Mark Mothersbaugh advertisement slogan for RustO-leum as the title, Young applied the philosophy to avoiding complacency with writing and putting on more progressive live shows. The album is one of Young's finest and is certainly a must listen. Let's talk Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Rust Never Sleeps!
We've all seen rock music on screen – movies, TV, documentaries, cable/streaming - purely rock music and musicians or simply featuring music or a notable performance. Sometimes it's rock music as the soundtrack – setting the mood, making a comment. In this episode of Vanguard Radio, we will talk about a major problem that affects naval vessels - that problem is corrosion. How can we detect and assess corrosion behind surface coatings such as paint, insulation, tiles, and seamless decking onboard Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) platforms in order to reduce corrosion's operational impact and improve the effectiveness of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance?

Late-70's, Neil Young produced what many (including Mick!) regard as his finest album - Rust Never Sleeps. In a productive burst, he produced that album, a live album featuring many of its songs, and released a live concert movie called, coincidentally, "Rust Never Sleeps". The boys went to town by train to see “Rust Never Sleeps”. They talk about the highlights, like the Star Wars-influenced stage sets, and the 70's retrospective set list. They also compare the concert movie to the times they've seen Neil Young live in concert, including the Greendale tour nearly thirty years later. Episode 1 of 21 is entitled ‘Rust Never sleeps' and will really be focused on soybean rust or ASR. This episode is sponsored by Pannar Seed. The studio guest for this show is Grant Pringle, a product agronomist with many years of field experience. The title of the podcast comes from Neil Young's 1979 rock album. He was likely referring to iron oxidation not ASR, but the same principle applies… you cannot get complacent with ASR. Antony and Grant discuss the current cropping season. Sclerotinia has been a major problem and farmers have been dealing with it in different ways. The rooting and nodulation habits of soybean are also discussed, before the main topic, soybean rust is considered in depth. The history of soybean rust is touched on, and how fortunate the country was to have neighbouring Zimbabwe get the infection before RSA. This gave the research community the ability to prepare and reduce the impact of the disease when it arrived. The disease triangle is discussed with reference to the source of the inoculum, the environmental conditions required for infection and the susceptibility of the soybean host. The areas of production that are most affected, the strategies used for timing spray applications, and the way that this fits into production practice are debated. Finally, it is concluded that the nett effect of soybean rust has been to add a level of complexity to production but is has in doing so probably lifted the average yields in the affected areas. The crops are looked after better, the insect control is better, the grain quality has improved, and the crops are staying photosynthetically active longer.

Con él cantó a dúo en "Are There Any More Real Cowboys?". Escuchar audio
Look out mama, there's a podcast comin' down the river. It's Live Rust! And we've got our buds Saralyn and Nick joining us to live meme the whole thing! Since they're 87 percent the same - we also dive heavily into the Rust Never Sleeps movie during this episode as well. We bounce around more than usual on this one. We talk about this album's version of Comes A Time verses the original. Luke hates Ska and ponders if Neil invented white reggae. He's also a bit drunk and sunburnt. Russ compares Luke's sunburn to many red things. Saralyn memes about it all.Listen to all the great podcasts over on the Pantheon Network!
It's not as chronological as most of the previous eps. We talk about massive amps and Neil's Jawas, or Road-eyes. Mike brings up the highly controversial fact that he prefers Star Trek to Star Wars. In this episode...Mike brings the guest to this week's party. The Richest Men In Town is proud and honored to have Steven Mitchell join the program. The ride is a wild one!Show NotesWho said it..."I have had more trouble with myself than with any other man I have ever met." -Dwight Lyman Moody"Out of 100 men, one will read The Bible and the other ninety-nine will read the Christian." -Dwight Lyman Moody"If you think you have a problem, you probably do." -Grace Slick of the Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship"It's like playing Game Boy in the middle of the Grand Canyon." -"See the Glory" by Steven Curtis Chapman“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [that is, Christ]: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic–on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg–or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse…. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” -C.S. My My, Hey Hey (out of the blue - órafmagnað) og Hey Hey, My My (into the black - rafmagnað). B-hliðin var tekin upp á ýmsum tónleikum haustið 1978. Neil notaði þennan frasa; „Rust never sleeps“ sem konsept fyrir tónleikaferðina sem hann fór ásamt Crazy Horse 1978 og var einskonar leikhúskryddaður túr með proppsi og stælum. Rust never sleeps kemur upphaflega frá Rust-Oleum málningu en Neil heyrði Mark Mothersbaugh úr hljómsveitini Devo nota þetta þegar Neil var að vinna með Devo nokkru fyrr. Neil gerði tónleikakvikmynd á þessum sama tíma sem hann leikstýrði sjálfur og heitir líka Rust Never Sleeps. Og síðla árs 1979 kom út tónleikaplatan Live Rust sem hefur að geyma upptökur af nýjum og eldri lögum Neil eins og hann spilaði þau með Crazy Horse 1978. Við heyrum nokkur lög af Rust Never Sleeps í kvöld og A+B með Steppenwolf. Þar fyrir utan heyrist Deep Purple, Gar Clarke Jr. Sólstafir, Dimma, Bootlegs, Rory Gallagher, Jack White, U2, Ramones, Dropkick Murphys, Brian Fallon, ZZ Top, Joyous Wolf, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Wolfmother, Jerry Lee Lewis, Robert Plant ofl.

Forty years later, Neil Young and Crazy Horse's masterpiece Rust Never Sleeps still captivates listeners and critics with its simple melodies, complex lyrics and punk-inspired sound. This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot discuss the album's impact and how Young's blend of acoustic and electric made for an iconic musical experience. They'll also discuss the electric Rickenbacker 12-String guitar, an instrument that was featured prominently in songs by bands ranging from the Beatles to the Byrds.

Bill and Brian are joined by rock journalist and music critic Steven Hyden (Pitchfork, Uproxx, Grantland, A.V Club) to talk about Pearl Jam's divisive third album Vitalogy (1994, Epic). Written on tour and recorded piecemeal and haphazardly, the band started to showcase its eclectic nature by featuring some noise collages and a more "punk" sound. Especially influenced by singer Eddie Vedder's trouble dealing with fame and the suicide of one of their closest peers Kurt Cobain, the album took on a darker, grittier tone that, although dismissed at the time, has become revered by Pearl Jam die hards. Steven talks about how Pearl Jam and their "feud" with Nirvana figures into his book, Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me, and how Nirvana helped shape his views on Pearl Jam and this album upon its release. Then Bill, Brian, and Steven discuss Dave Abbruzzese's excellent drumming and why his guns and sport cars got him dismissed from the band, how Eddie Vedder can be too good of a singer, how powerful the band is on "Corduroy," how using early takes both helped and hindered the album, PJ's penchant for trilogies, Vedder's ability to successfully write from a female perspective, how Pearl Jam has become the last huge rock act that has sustained its career, Vitalogy's similarities to Rust Never Sleeps, the importance of viewing this album as a whole, and much more as we make our way through the album track by track! Be sure to check out Steven's book, available at all fine book establishments, including at the following link! http://www.amazon.com/Your-Favorite-Band-Killing-Rivalries/dp/0316259152/ref=sr_1_1_twi_pap_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1463490702&sr=1-1&keywords=steven+hyden
