In this sixth installment of our eight-part conversation with World Golf Hall of Fame member Hale Irwin, we dive deep into the heart of major championship golf and reflect on the enduring lessons of a remarkable career. Hale, always thoughtful and candid, revisits his storied experiences at Augusta National, sharing his personal connection to the Masters and what it meant to walk its hallowed grounds—both as a competitor and a steward of the game's history. With insight only a three-time U.S. Open champion can provide, Hale opens up about how his game fit—or didn't fit—the iconic venues of each major. He offers a behind-the-scenes look at the mental and physical toll of playing The Open Championship, revealing why family time, the grind of travel, and those rainy days with fogged-up glasses sometimes outweighed teeing it up across the pond. From the roars of Augusta to the winds of Royal Lytham & St. Annes, Hale reflects on the challenges, triumphs, and close calls—like his proud 64 at the Masters and duels with legends like Seve Ballesteros and Tom Watson. We also touch on the PGA Championship, and Hale's personal choices around scheduling, family priorities, and staying true to his own rhythm, even in the face of major championship expectations. With humor, humility, and unmatched perspective, Hale Irwin shares stories that remind us that greatness isn't only measured in trophies, but also in the values that guide a life in golf. Join us for another timeless chapter in the life and legacy of one of the game's true champions.Subscribe and follow FORE the Good of the Game for the next two episodes as we continue the journey with Hale Irwin.Give Bruce & Mike some feedback via Text.Support the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. On this special bonus segment of Next on the Tee, I welcome back PGA Tour winner Bob Byman for a deep dive into some of the most defining moments of his career. With it being Arnold Palmer Invitational week on the PGA Tour, Bob takes us back to his victory at the first Arnold Palmer Invitational played Bay Hill in 1979, reflecting on what it meant to win a tournament connected to Arnold Palmer. As a Wake Forest alum who played on an Arnold Palmer scholarship, Bob shares personal stories about his relationship with The King and how Palmer's influence shaped his career. We also revisit Bob's impressive performances at The Open Championship, including his debut at St. Andrews in 1978, where he finished T17 alongside legends like Seve Ballesteros and Tom Weiskopf. The following year at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, he was in contention heading into the final round before finishing T7 in a tournament that saw Seve claim his first major title. Bob gives us a behind-the-scenes look at those experiences, the challenges of links golf, and what it was like competing on golf's biggest international stage. His victory at Bay Hill also earned him a spot in the 1979 Masters, where he got his first taste of Augusta National. Bob walks us through that unforgettable experience, from the pressure of teeing it up at golf's most revered venue, playing a practice round with Jack Nicklaus, to the lessons he took away from his first major start at Augusta. From Bay Hill to St. Andrews to Augusta, Bob Byman has been part of some incredible golf history. Don't miss this conversation filled with career-defining moments, legendary names, and stories that every golf fan will appreciate.
His favorite golf course is Carnoustie, the brutally tough links between Dundee and Aberdeen, nicknamed Carnasty because of the stern test. Maybe it is the fight against nature's force, the strategical elements and the precision required, that has made it a favorite for Magnus Andersson. Or perhaps it is because it was here Magnus caddied for Mats Hallberg when Mats finished third in the Scottish Open and thereby qualified for The Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes. In this episode of the podcast Magnus tells us about the lessons he learned from caddying on tour, and how you can use them to become a better golfer. A warm Welcome to The Golfstore Podcast.
Sam & Tom sit down in the members' bar at Royal Lytham & St Anne's Golf Club to meet with Dr Steven Reid, lifelong member at Lytham and author of Bobby's Open, charting the tale of how Bobby Jones came to win his first Claret Jug. He would go on to defend it successfully in 1927, as well as winning at Royal Liverpool in 1930 on his way to completing the 'impregnable quadrilateral'. Steven's book - foreworded by Jack Nicklaus - is a captivating read and brings to life in viivd detail the struggles Jones went through, not only with his health but his temper and his putting as he clawed his way out of the 'lean years' into 7 (or perhaps 8) 'fat years', where he was unstoppable. A link to get a copy of Steven's book can be found here, and we hope you enjoy the pod! Todays introduction was recorded on the path across "Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Course, here in Lancashire. In the Christian life, there are different types of Christian experience. How can you tell if what you are experiencing is complete Christian experience? For an insight into this area, we are going to look at just a couple of verses from the Book of James, (James 1: 26-27) There appears to be two types of religious faith described in this passage. The first is a weak and useless sort of Christianity and the second is a pure spiritual life, an empowered and enriching Christian Life and we are going to look at both of these today.www.livinginfaith.ukSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/livingfaitheveryday?fan_landing=true)

There are few people more steeped in golf than John Roger Jones – his list of achievements is both long and illustrious. Three times a Welsh strokeplay champion and twice winner of the matchplay, JR – as he is affectionately known – clocked up 85 caps for his country before becoming both a Wales and Walker Cup selector. Elected to the R&A's championship committee in 1989, he has refereed at some of the world's top tournaments – including more than a dozen Open Championships. The voice of the Rules of Golf for a number of years on NBC, where his dulcet tones explained the technicalities to American TV viewers, there's little he hasn't seen either out on the course or in the booth. So whether it's explaining why he put Ernie Els on the clock on the pivotal back 9 at Royal Lytham in 2012, or how he deciphered Jordan Spieth's incredible adventures at Royal Birkdale five years later to an audience of millions, sit back as we go on a journey with JR through the Rules of Golf.
Part I of my England debrief goes deep into the links courses played on this trip (Royal Lytham, Royal Birkdale, West Lancashire, Formby, Formby Ladies, Hillside, & Southport & Ainsdale). This was a dream trip to a very special part of the golf world, and can't wait to make it back to the region. Stay tuned for Part II which will include the Heathland courses played on the trip.
