Unlocking Growth: Why Every CEO Needs a Team of A-Players

Sales Talk for CEOs

Imagine this: every person reporting directly to you is not just competent, but an A-player, fully aligned with your vision and driving your company's growth. Sounds ideal, right? This is not just a dream—it's an achievable reality that can transform the way you lead. Today on "Sales Talk for CEOs," Alice Heiman delves into why having the right people in the right roles is not just beneficial but essential for your company's success.Key TakeawaysEvaluate Your Team: It's crucial to assess if each team member is an A-player who contributes positively to your company's performance and culture. Alice notes, “You do not need to struggle with the people who work for you. It's not good for you, it's not good for them, and it isn't good for the rest of the company.”Leverage Individual Strengths: Encourage team members to operate in their "genius zone" where they excel and are most passionate, boosting morale and efficiency. Alice emphasizes, “Know what you're good at and do that. Let's figure out how to get someone else to do things you're not good at, rather than having you do them poorly.”Strategic Restructuring: Be willing to make tough decisions. If team members are not suited to their roles, consider reassignments or changes to better align their strengths with the company's needs. Don't just live with it. As Alice points out, “It's just really not fair to anyone and it doesn't make your company grow faster, that's for sure.”Alice discusses the common challenges CEOs face with team dynamics, emphasizing the importance of not just filling positions, but filling them with people who truly fit the company's vision and values.Action Steps for CEOs:Conduct a Performance Review: Identify who truly meets the A-player criteria.Focus on Your Strengths: Ensure you are working within your genius zone and encourage your team to do the same.Clear Communication on Roles: Have honest discussions with your team about their performance and future within the company.Alice challenges leaders to envision a team that not only supports but propels company growth. She poses a critical reflection for every CEO, "What would your world be like if every team member was an A-player?"Aligning your team with your company's goals isn't just beneficial—it's crucial for thriving in today's competitive market. Tune into the full podcast for a deeper dive into how you can lead your team to success.Chapters00:00 Introduction - Alice Heiman kicks off the podcast addressing CEOs and discussing the challenges with sales strategies.02:14 A Player Struggles - Exploring the common CEO issue of having underperforming team members and the desire to turn them into A players.04:24 CEO's Role in Team Performance - The harsh truth that a part of the struggle with team performance lies with the CEOs' decisions.06:23 Genius Zone Concept - Alice Heiman introduces the concept of working within one's 'genius zone' to enhance personal and company growth.08:02 Team Structuring - Discussing the importance of aligning team members' roles with their strengths and talents.09:24 Personnel Changes - Insights on making tough personnel decisions to ensure each team member is playing to their strengths.11:14 Impact on Customer Experience - How internal team dynamics directly influence customer satisfaction and sales.13:04 Call to Action for CEOs - Alice Heiman urges CEOs to evaluate themselves and their teams to optimize company performance and growth.13:50 Conclusion - Wrapping up by emphasizing the CEO's role in building a strong company culture and inviting listeners to the next episode.Connect with Alice on LinkedIn:(40) Alice Heiman | LinkedInCheck out Alice's website:https://AliceHeiman.com

If you enjoy this episode, be sure to go back and listen to  Flower Math Part 1:  Pricer Per Stem Flower Math Part 2: Product Shrink Flower Math Part 3: Quality Tiers Flower Math Part 4: Delivery and Handling Fees   Ellen and Jennie both teach online courses that may be valuable to your floral business.  Here is a link to Ellen's course and here is a link to Jennie's courses.   This podcast is brought to you by the Philadelphia Floral Guild, where we're building community around sustainable local flowers.  If you're a florist in the Philadelphia area, we'd love to have you shop with us!  Click here to learn how.  Not in the Philadelphia region?  Find a flower farmer near you by visiting LocalFlowers.org.  And check out Rooted Farmers to see if there is a flower collective near you!   Now that this series on flower math has finished up, we'll start featuring some new voices on the show.  So stay tuned for Episode 6 when we talk to a vetran wholesale flower farmer!

This week I have part 2 of my interview with Glenn Parker, The Positive Influence Guy, Glenn, the only child of two hard-working parents, grew up on the streets of New York City. He played street games like stickball, punchball, 3-box baseball and Johnny-on-the Pony with his buddies. He loved the competitive aspects of sports and the opportunities it provided for leadership. As he got older and taller, he moved on to competitive schoolyard and recreational league basketball. All these experiences came together and evolved when he attended an 8-week summer camp in upstate New York. Glenn especially loved the camp season finale when the entire camp of several hundred youngsters was divided into two teams for a week of Olympic-style competition in all manner of sports from baseball to archery to swimming. At age 15 Glenn was selected to serve as captain of one team where led a group of boys that ranged from five to 15 years of age requiring him to provide leadership in the form of support, motivation and positive influence to a varied group. In high school and later in college, Glenn played varsity sports where he learned the values of hard work, practice and collaboration. The sum total of these experiences helped Glenn learn that when he worked hard --- whether in sports or in the classroom ---- he succeeded. He took those values into his work life. After working for several organizations, Glenn and a colleague started a small business as training and organizational development consultants. The business took Glenn to all parts of the US giving him the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people working in a wide variety of industries and occupations. During this time, he narrowed the focus of the consulting to building effective teams and creating team-based organizations. Glenn always loved to write --- his first article was published while he was still in graduate school --- but it took a while for him to work up the courage and confidence to write a book. With the encouragement of Peter Block, Jossey-Bass published his first book, Team Players and Teamwork in 1990 that went on to be a best-seller. The book included a self-assessment survey which was subsequently published as a separate booklet and went on to sell more than one million copies as the Parker Team Player Survey. Many books and leader guides followed including another best-seller, Cross-Functional Teams: Working with Allies, Enemies and Other Strangers. His most recent book, co-authored with his son, Michael is Positive Influence: The Leader Who Helps People Become Their Best Self (HRD Press, 2020). A graduate of City College of New York with a B.A., Glenn also holds an M.A. from the University of Illinois and has studied for the doctorate at Cornell. He also studied at the University of Oslo. Outside of work Glenn has always been on the front lines of political and social causes as well as charitable issues such as cancer. He is a cancer survivor and long-time volunteer with the American Cancer Society. He co-founded Run for Dad, an annual event that draws some 1,500 people and is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of prostate cancer and funds for cancer research. Glenn and his wife, Judy, live in central New Jersey. They are parents of three grown children and grandparents to six wonderful grandchildren all of whom live nearby. Judy and Glenn share of love of travel having visited numerous places around the world to enjoy art, culture, history and good food. The Texas Longhorns Football Team begins their spring practices a week from now, building the foundation of what Texas fans hope will lead to some type of championship (Conference or National). Spring Practices are where you begin to set the foundation of what your football team will look like in the fall. Championships are built in the offseason. How will veteran players like Quinn Ewers, Xavier Worthy and JT Sanders look in their second/third spring practices respectively. How will newcomers like Johntay Cook, Cedric Baxter and Arch Manning look in their first spring practice? Will Steve Sarkisian have this team ready to compete for a Big 12 Championship? The answers to those questions remain to be seen. Texas lost to the Baylor Bears in basketball on Saturday, and they end the season against TCU and Kansas. Can Rodney Terry overcome this setback and lead Texas to a strong showing in the Big 12 and NCAA tournament? Last but not least, Texas Baseball picked up it over the weekend beating Indiana two games to one in the weekend series. Can the Omahorns get things together?
