Former Navy SEAL Lieutenant Jeff Engel provides vital insights into the challenges and opportunities for post-military life, crucial for veterans. He talks about his journey to the Naval Academy and eventually a SEAL Officer. Jeff served 9 years and got out in 1998 and he addresses knowing he never wanted to make the military his career. After getting out, Jeff went to work for IBM in many facets and learned as much as he could about the tech industry. In 2020 he purchased his own company and today is the CEO of Location Tech. This episode delves into Jeff's journey, highlighting how he transformed from a young swimmer facing academic challenges to an officer and veteran adept at navigating the complexities of military transition. His path to the Naval Academy, influenced by his desire for self-improvement, marked the start of an extraordinary career. Despite having no family history in the military, Jeff's determination and adaptability led him to not only join the Navy but also to excel as a Navy SEAL. During his time in the Navy, Jeff faced rigorous physical and mental challenges, shaping him into a resilient and strategic thinker. His experiences as a Navy SEAL, where perseverance and mental fortitude were paramount, prepared him for the challenges of post-military life. This period of his life was not just about overcoming obstacles but also about personal growth and developing a skill set that would prove invaluable in his future endeavors. The transition from military to civilian life is a pivotal theme in Jeff's narrative. After his distinguished service, he embarked on a new journey, applying the discipline and leadership skills honed in the Navy to the business world. Today, as a successful business owner, Jeff exemplifies the potential of veteran career transition, showing how the values and experiences from military service can pave the way for success in civilian life. His story is a beacon for veterans, demonstrating how the skills learned in the military can be effectively translated into post-military careers and entrepreneurship. Need a clear decision-maker in high-stress military operations critical to the defense of the United States? Then this week's Team Never Quit guest, Todd Deghetto, is your man. After 30 years as a Navy SEAL officer in Naval Special Warfare, Todd's current mission is to develop future leaders in mental toughness, discipline, & building collaborative teams. Todd, Marcus, and Morgan share an engaging conversation including actual mission details, its personal & mental ramifications, and the steps to recovery. Everyone on Todd's team has a purpose. In this episode you will hear: It doesn't matter what people think about you. Do what's right, regardless of the consequences. If you lose friends over it, they weren't true friends. Having a dad as a New Jersey State Trooper, I learned about the evil in this world, and I learned about honor – doing what's right. That's the nice thing about diving without O2. If you gotta die, that's the way to go, because you just fall asleep. [In combat] You get real good at completely cutting your head off from the rest of your body - No feelings, no emotion, and no pain. I truly didn't start processing stuff until after I was done. When things are going sideways is when people show their true colors. When I returned, God put it on my heart to mentor the next generation. I'm a leadership coach & mentor for the University of Tennessee's MBA program. I may not have the business expertise, but I've got a lot of leadership experience. The only way you're gonna get better is to be able to say “this is mine.” This I made that decision, and this is why I made that decision. We learn more from our mistakes than we ever do when things go right. I took me several weeks after I returned - and all of a sudden I woke up one day feeling like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. All the explosives, the blasts, the mortars, the rockets, the charges, the AC4's – the damage done to the brain is devastating. The healing journey has been the hardest thing for me. Part of that journey is not quitting om my family. [In military leadership] We're very good at controlling everything we can control. There's psychedelics treatment out there to really help us guys. My initial thought was “no way”, but it truly helped me.
In this episode, we talked about: Understanding who you are and your mission Teaching others to face adversity Don't know who you really are There's always a new outcome or solution Anybody can lead, everyone is a leader Knowing the right tool and path Asking for help doesn't make you weak Feeling like we have to know everything Being willing to learn from others You don't have the best on everything as a leader All men should be a little bit dangerous Focusing on different mindset levels As a man, you should be a leader "Bad things are going to happen to good people, ambushes are coming for all of us but we have to be prepared for it" "It is never too late to come back from failure, from a problem, or anything, that truly is the essence of the overcome mindset" "We rely on the tools that we have in our toolbox to get out of every bad or complicated situation" About Jason: Retired Lieutenant Jason Redman spent 11 years as an enlisted Navy SEAL and ten years as a SEAL Officer leading SEAL teams in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. On September 13, 2007, outside of Fallujah, Iraq, Lieutenant Redman's Assault Team came under heavy machine gun and small arms fire and he was severely wounded in the ensuing firefight.
