In this in-depth conversation with Selina Barker, author of 'Burnt Out'! We discuss the significant issues of burnout and perfectionism. Selina details her journey with burnout, the lessons she learned from her workaholic father, and her experiences as a life and career change coach. The conversation explores how societal and individual pressures often contribute to burnout, with a specific focus on women, particularly mothers. Selina emphasizes the importance of managing one's energy and taking regular breaks. The conversation also delves into dealing with the 'shitty committee', a term used by Selina to represent the inner critic and self-critical thoughts, and how understanding this can assist in preventing burnout.

In this episode, I share an everyday burnout conversation with Selina Barker. Selina is a career and life design coach, author, and podcaster dedicated to helping people not only take their dreams seriously but create the life and career they really  want to live too. Over the past 12 years, she has coached a long list of clients from Google directors, to recording artists, best-selling authors, and leaders in the creative and music industry as well as thousands of people globally have been through her online courses.Selina created the Audible Series 'The Career Change Coach' along with one of my faves, The Monday Crew, a free slice of hope and inspiration delivered to your Monday inbox thanks to her mini-podcast and weekly check-in tool. She also founded Project Love with Vicki Pavitt, a Love and Dating Coach for Women. Project Loves 'Goodbye, Hello' end-of-year journal has become an annual staple review for so many now. I've ordered my copy of The 'Goodbye 2021, Hello 2022' journal and can't wait to tuck in. I'm very grateful for it being available worldwide. It was thanks to Emma Gannon, sharing her personal story of burnout and crediting Selina's help and support for her own recovery that led me to discover Selina's latest book, 'Burnt Out: the exhausted person's guide to thriving in a fast-paced world'.  Selina's brilliant book packs a mighty punch. Her breakdown of how burnout affects you, along with the practical guidance you need to start building yourself back up again, is powerful. Despite the immense information this book holds, I particularly love how easy it is to read and digest - because after all, Selina knows what it's like to be burnt out along with all its brain fog and limited energy.I bloody love this chat, and I just know it's going to help so many listening who either are teetering on the edge of burnout or are in the full throes of some tough days. Discussed in this episode: The life experiences that led her to become a life and career change coach. Her own experience with mini burnouts. The burnout archetypes we all should know about. Where stress shows up in the body. Why we should be using exercise to manage our stress levels and how it brings more energy to our day. Mentioned in this episode:The Way We're Working Isn't Working  by  Tony Schwarz The Power Of Full Engagement  by Tony Schwarz and Jim Loher Follow @selinathecoachFind out more at selinabarker.comCheck out Project Love and the 'Goodbye, Hello' Journal at loveprojectlove.comClick here for the Everyday Burnout Conversations website page. Please note, this podcast is not intended as medical advice. In this episode I talk to Natalie an Educational Psychologist, mum of two and one of my anti-racism students. Natalie and I had an incredibly raw and vulnerable conversation about her anti-racism journey and she shares her experience of being in an interracial relationship with two mixed heritage children while also working in education. Natalie grew up in an almost exclusively white area and while she felt innately uncomfortable with the covert and sometimes overt racism she observed; she talks about how she didn't have the language to speak up until she grew up. This is a really truthful conversation about how to become an ally beyond performative action. The boundary between speaking up and passing on the mic, tackling systemic racism in education and the joy of becoming anti-racist. Natalie generously opens up about her journey, leaning into the messiness of anti racist work and imploring her fellow white folk to do the same. In the episode we also discuss: - Natalie's journey into her anti-racist work & the importance of intentionality - White privilege and how that can be weaponised against black and brown people. - Racism and unconscious bias in education - Natalie's thoughts on Christianity and dismantling systems of oppression Referenced in the episode: - Robin DiAngelo: White Fragility (https://www.waterstones.com/book/white-fragility/robin-diangelo/9780141990569) - Reni Eddo-Lodge: Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race (https://www.waterstones.com/book/why-im-no-longer-talking-to-white-people-about-race/reni-eddo-lodge/9781408870587) - Layla F Saad: Me and White Supremacy (https://www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com/) - My discussion with Selina Barker in Episode 3 (https://audioboom.com/posts/7555436-allyship-and-the-power-and-pain-of-unlearning-racism-with-selina-barker )   NB: All views are Natalie's own and not that of her employer.  You can connect with me over at @novareidofficial (https://www.instagram.com/novareidofficial/) and atwww.novareid.com If you are ready to do the inner work and learn to be actively anti racist please visit my website for further details about my anti racism online course:  https://novareid.com/services/anti-racism-white-privilege-course/ Don't forget if you learn something and these add value you can join my brand new podcast community over on Patreon to support this work and get access to exclusive content: https://www.patreon.com/novareid. This new episode starts the first in a series of Reset & Refocus shows on the Practical Magic Podcast to bring in September's new term vibe, and I have the pleasure of sharing the words and wisdom of the lovely Selina Barker, Career Change Coach, and one half of the fabulous Project Love. Selina's on the show with me this week and we are in conversation about career change. Throughout the show Selina shares her motivation and wisdom with us. On the show we chat about: Selina's story and how she redefined the 'factory settings' of her career early on. How following your passions and what you enjoy doing can define your career. How to follow and use your intuition rather than the path of 'should's and other people's expectations or obligations, to do what you really want to do. The metamorphosis of our selves, and how this shapes our career path and career changes. How career change doesn't have to be one big leap, it can be a series of explorations and projects in experimentation. How to create a safe space for you to 'fail' as you're making new changes, or rather, how failure is not a real thing. Why self care is fundamentally first when it comes to kicking a career change into action.   Links for further resources: Selina's website Project Love website Selina's 3 month career change coaching programme Goodbye 2019 / Hello 2020 Journal Power Thoughts by Natalie Costa

I first interviewed Selina for a real love story back in 2015. We reflected on her journey of feeling completely stuck in love and wondering if it was ever going to happen for her, to feeling an abundance of love, and not just with a loving partner (we actually revealed in the podcast that she was expecting!) but the love that she discovered from the inside out. And now, 3 years later, Selina is back in the hot seat, but this time to tell a much deeper love story. This is a journey of hitting rock bottom in life and rising strong, healing and finding your way back home with love as your compass. A journey that starts and ends with ourselves. This is a story that has never been told before and I’m actually hearing it for the first time. There is such a beautiful sense of vulnerability and intimacy to it. It’s everything our podcasts are about - hearing women opening up and sharing from the heart. And that takes real courage. Thank you Selina, it was an honour to hold the space and to hear you tell your story, your REAL love story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. V xxx

Selina Barker is one half of the brilliant Project Love with Vicki Pavitt. Project Love developed from a series of podcasts back in 2014 looking at love and relationships (with topics like: how to get out of your head and into your body; creating a space for love; how to love without losing yourself; how your inner shitty committee might be getting in the way of finding love….) as well real love stories with people about their relationships and how they met their partner. Project Love is all about helping women to have the kind of lives and relationships they want, and to develop the courage to follow their own path. We also spoke about the process of developing a business and the importance of experimenting to find out what you really enjoy and what resonates with other people, breaking down a dream into a project in order to explore this and find your thing. Project Love Founders Vicki Burtt and Selina Barker on the importance of self-love and self-care In this episode we're talking to the duo behind Project Love, a business dedicated, quite literally to the business of love. Founders Vicki Burtt and Selina Marker have made it their mission to offer a whole new style of love and relationship advice that is practical, not at all preach, and above all else, relatable. Teaching about the importance of self-care is at the heart of everything they do. Designing a life you love means cultivating love on the inside so that it flourishes on the outside. The heart of their message is about focusing on the most important relationship of all: our relationship with ourselves. In today's episode we talk about: - How they met, what sparked the idea for Project Love and what made them decide to turn it into a business - What they felt was missing when it comes to dating and self-care advice - The pressure society puts on us as women to be married with kids and have everything figured out by a certain age - Their incredible workshops and coaching sessions, including their latest one, Designing a Life You Love - How to cultivate self-love and create self-care rituals you'll stick with Upcoming Project Love Events: Project Love Salon in London: https://loveprojectlove.com/events/how-to-fall-in-love-with-life
