Created by Ella Mesma and Ama Rouge, PowerUp! is a podcast that seeks to empower and dismantle, giving us the power and confidence to question, deconstruct, rebuild and expand in life. Hosted by two womxn of black and mixed heritage with over 30 combined years working in the dance, movement and creative industries. We share our journeys and tools to help you on your personal journey to your authentic self. We recognise that we can’t dismantle and empower - or be empowered, without first learning ourselves. Diving deeper to unlearn the harmful, restrictive and unprogressive. It's an ongoing practise and journey for us all, which is why we created this podcast. Our show features guests doing the work to enlighten, deconstruct and power up in their own magical ways. We lead conversations around topics of healing, transformation, wellbeing and creativity looking at how they feed our personal and collective evolution. How they help us PowerUp!
Writing is about listening. Connecting and tuning in. All of this enables the words to come through the body. “When we only move from the logical mind and we don't move from the body mind and the heart mind, and we don't integrate these different parts of ourselves, then it can feel like it's [writing] taking and not also nourishing us.” What an incredibly special episode to close the season and the show on. The wisdom and generosity that Toni brings to this episode around the power of language through her embodiment as a listener who listens through writing, poems, and the earth - for the stories that help us remember our power and our magic, is precious and invaluable. Toni Giselle Stuart works as a poet, performer, creative writing facilitator & healer. Her work includes Krotoa-Eva's Suite – a cape jazz poem in three movements with filmmaker Kurt Orderson; Poetry, Paramedics and Film with filmmaker/health researcher Leanne Brady (2018); What the Water Remembers at Woordfees (2020); forgetting. and memory with vangile gantsho & Vusumzi Ngxande, at the Virtual National Arts Festival (2020). “But then I noticed I was continuously always on, and being always on I noticed that I didn't have these slow moments, and these slow moments in which I would just turn things off would often give me the moments to be more creative…” Slow living guide, creative producer, consultant and business owner Priscilla Macintosh joins us sharing about how reaching a pivotal point in her career forced her to slow down. She didn't give it all up and move to the countryside, she found her way of slow living in the city. With Adjuma Tribe, her slow living platform, Priscilla helps freelancers and business owners on their own slow living journey. To achieve a more vital and better work-life balance, manage stress, and improve their overall health. We talk to Bellatrix about Gender, Identity and how radical acts of self-care can move you further and further away from who you are not. Bel's pronouns are they/them. They are a Queer Non Binary Cosmic Anarchist Earth Witch.... or.... musician! There are multifaceted artists, and then there's Bellatrix. A spellbinding singer and instinctively expressive songwriter, a multi-instrumentalist, a versatile performer and former world beatbox champion, Bellatrix complements artistic wholeness with an inventive, all-encompassing and hands-on creative vision that can't help but resonate. Starting out as the first professional female beatboxer in the UK, Bellatrix - who now identifies as non-binary - has been a trailblazer in their field and is a fierce advocate for those who are under-represented in their communities. Bellatrix has since been making a name for themself as both a solo artist and a highly sought after collaborator, touring internationally and performing at many of the top festivals and venues across the world. Bellatrix is currently playing bass for Grammy nominated artist NAO, releasing “daring pop” music as a solo artist, and also has a monthly radio show on soho radio. Join us as we talk to wellness architect and Leadership Coach, Martha Cuffy. Her curiosity about how we walk with aliveness and how the body facilitates this has been a source of lifelong fascination. It's taken her to live in an ashram university for 2 years where she studied for an MA in Yoga Psychology, to other wellness experiences like wild swimming in Wales and designing primal spa experiences in a rainforest garden in Dominica. Perhaps all an antidote to her previous life of MBA studies, working in tech and corporate finance. Working as a certified TRE provider gives her the honour of guiding people into deeper relationship with their own body. To not fear what lies within, but to meet it with vulnerability and sometimes play. Martha's passion is supporting Black leaders - in various settings from Windsor Castle to online forums to help them gain board positions. She was born and raised in East London, Newham, and has lived in France, Germany, India and Dominica. We talk to Anastasia Ttofis about how panic attacks led to her creating the BusyBuddha retreats in order to bring what she learnt about regulating her nervous system and rewiring her subconscious to other professionals and help them achieve more balance, focus and longevity in their careers, and live a more fulfilled and happy life. Anastasia is the founder of the BusyBuddha Retreats, Solicitor, Director and multi-business owner. She has over 7 years' experience in the legal industry and has most recently started her own law firm (iLA). She has substantive experience acting on high profile litigious banking claims, and advising on complexed banking facilities and security documents. She is also a company director and co-owner of a Specialist Finance Broker, and a local networking company. Despite having a very busy and demanding working and personal life, Anastasia is able to live a life full of gratitude and serenity. “If you question yourself along the way…in a way it shows you have a healthy brain. Where the problem comes in is not having the imposter syndrome, the problem comes in when you let the imposter syndrome stop you from doing what you want to do.” Celest is a geek that loves anatomy, neuroscience and biomechanics. She miraculously acquired her BSc (Hons) in physiotherapy in 2009 despite dropping out of school at 16. She found learning at school really tough, however now credits her ability to make complex concepts easy to grasp, down to her learning struggles. She runs regular education based workshops where she takes current scientific research, anecdotal evidence from senior healthcare providers and applies them to movement disciplines. Welcome to Season 3! We know - when did Season 3 happen?! We open this season talking with Dr Emily Zobel Marshall, Author, Poet, Activist and Reader in Postcolonial Literature at the School of Cultural Studies at Leeds Beckett University. She develops her creative work alongside her academic writing and has had poems published in the Peepal Tree Press anthology Weighted Words (2021), Magma (‘The Loss', Issue 75, 2019), Smoke Magazine (Issue 67, 2020) and The Caribbean Writer (Vol 34, 2020, Vol 35, 2021 & Vol 36, 2021). “Maybe the reason why people think there's a crucial difference between play and being a child and adulthood is this idea of stakes...the stakes are so high [etc]...but once the stakes are gone you really see people flourish...once we take away the weightiness of things.” In this episode we're joined by dad, teacher, human Ben Asiedu and mum, intuitive therapist & spiritual life coach Danielle Byars as we talk play and parenting. Are they mutually exclusive? How do you find harmony? Can we let go of gender when it comes to play? AND it's a SUMMER OF PLAY! “When you recognise that there's all these different ways to play, you can see how play comes into your daily life but maybe you don't recognise it as play…play builds so much resilience in us” In the playwork world play is a set of behaviours that are: freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated. Join us as we chat to the brilliant and incredibly knowledgeable playworker, author and community organiser Adele Cleaver about the different types of play, trusting ourselves to play, our barriers to play, how we can play more (which we feel we all need living through a pandemic and multiple lockdowns) and how artists can get past themselves and truly play to arrive at a desirable end result - without the focus being on the end result! **Enter our very first PowerUp! competition to WIN a free signed copy of Adele's new book Children don't dissolve in the rain (UK postage only) - visit @adeleplayworker, @ama.rouge or @ellamesma on instagram and look for our SUMMER OF PLAY posts. We dare you to reach the end of this episode uninspired! We chat with incredible human and artistic director Nadia Iftkhar about creating what you want to see when there's no blueprint, leading intuitively, co-creation; and how intrinsically it's linked to the identity of Company of Others. Nadia is the founding Artistic Director & CEO of Company of Others, a North East based dance theatre organisation which collaborates with people who have experience of being ‘othered' by the society we live in, to co-create dance theatre experiences which highlight and share stories of the human experience through their lens. As a choreographer she is interested in how we physically unlearn, learn and share our stories. She is proud to be Co-Vice Chair of Newcastle East mixed multi Academy Trust.
