Today, Leave No Trace Ireland launched its annual "Love This Place" campaign, calling on the public to come together to protect Ireland's rich natural landscapes, so we can all enjoy them responsibly as we head into the summer season. Now in its fifth year, the national awareness campaign is supported by partners including the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, the Office of Public Works, Coillte, Sport Ireland, Waterways Ireland, Wicklow Co Council, Galway Co Council, Clare Co Council & Cork City Council - all dedicated to promoting responsible outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship. With more people than ever seeking connection with nature - through hiking, swimming, dog-walking and exploring - this year's "Love This Place" campaign reinforces the simple message: "If you love this place, leave no trace." The Need for Protection Ireland's great outdoors has seen a sharp rise in popularity in recent years, with over 98% of residents valuing time spent in nature. However, increased footfall has also brought challenges: trail erosion, littering, dog fouling, wildlife disturbance, and an increase in wildfires - 96% of which are linked to human activity. "Our message is clear," said Maura Kiely, CEO of Leave No Trace Ireland, "We all have a part to play in preserving the places and wildlife we love. This campaign invites everyone enjoying the outdoors this summer, from seasoned hikers to dog owners, to take simple, mindful steps to protect our natural landscapes." Campaign Highlights Throughout the summer, "Love This Place" will roll out: A digital storytelling campaign featuring voices from across Ireland: farmers, walkers, dog owners, and community groups. On-the-ground events and clean-up days coordinated with local authorities and environmental groups. Education initiatives and social media toolkits for influencers, schools, and tourism partners. Taking Action The "Love This Place" 2025 campaign shares three tangible actions for the public to take: Be responsible with your dog - Keep dogs on a lead, especially around farm animals and wildlife, and always clean up after them. Protect Wildlife and wild places - Bring all litter home, don't feed wild animals, and watch wildlife from a safe distance. Stay on the path - Stick to marked trails to avoid damaging habitats or disturbing animals, both seen and unseen. A Shared Responsibility "Our land is not just scenic - it's living," added Kiely. "It feeds us, shelters biodiversity, and connects our communities. Respecting it is not about restriction, but about care and responsibility. We're so grateful to the public and our partners for supporting "Love This Place" - we ask everyone to take action and join the movement because protecting the places we love means we can continue to enjoy them in the future." Speaking about the launch Dara Calleary TD. Minister for Social Protection and Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht said, "Ireland's natural heritage is one of our greatest assets - environmentally, culturally, and economically. The "Love This Place" campaign reminds us that with this privilege comes responsibility. By embracing the principles of Leave No Trace, we protect our landscapes and support efforts to tackle our declining biodiversity. Even small actions matter, helping us to work in greater harmony and building the resilience of nature across the country. I am proud to support this campaign and encourage everyone to play their part." To learn more or get involved, visit: www.leavenotraceireland.org/love-this-place

The 11th annual I Wish Showcase, held today at the RDS in Dublin, saw 4,000 female students gather to be inspired to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Maths (STEM). Today's event - the largest I Wish Showcase to date - was officially opened by Taoiseach, Micheál Martin. Speaking ahead of the event, the Taoiseach said: "I'm delighted to attend today's event, with 4,000 brilliant young minds gathering under one roof, ready to reimagine the world through STEM. I Wish proves that with opportunity, role models and determination, there are no limits to what girls can achieve - breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and building a brighter, more inclusive future for all." With 45% of girls citing a lack of access to female role models as a barrier to STEM careers according to a recent I Wish survey, 46 speakers engaged directly with students at the all-island event, showcasing the power of visible role models in shaping aspirations and breaking barriers. Among them were Olympic sprint star Phil Healy; Olympic rower Zoe Hyde; Olympic relay star and Deloitte's Strategic Project Lead, Claire Dunne (née Bergin); and international rally driver Aoife Rafferty, who shared their journeys of perseverance, ambition and success. This year's event also features the largest-ever exhibition hall, with over 30 exhibitors from leading Irish and global companies and organisations showcasing exciting STEM career opportunities. Highlights included the Sport Innovation Hub in collaboration with Sport Ireland's HER Moves campaign, where students explored how technology is transforming sports through interactive activities like rowing machines, reaction boards and jersey design stations. The Food Science Hub, led by Carbery, Kerry Group and Dawn Meats, demonstrated STEM's impact on the food industry with machine learning tools, cheese-making tasks and problem-solving games. Engineering and construction activities range from a Giant Jenga game with Jones Engineering to mini-golf with Regeneron, alongside insights from companies such as Sisk, Crown and Dornan on the evolution of careers in construction. Students also discovered the role of STEM in business and innovation with IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland. Adding to the excitement, the Podcast Hub, in collaboration with Virgin Media, allowed students to record live podcasts, with a select few invited to visit the studio post-event to record their own. I Wish co-founder Caroline O'Driscoll highlighted the significance of providing access to inspiring role models, stating: "The findings from our most recent annual survey report make it clear that while progress has been made, systemic barriers persist, preventing too many young girls from seeing STEM as a viable career path. Collectively, we must give real choices to girls and ensure that they have every opportunity to take their place in the economies of tomorrow. "At our Showcase, over 4,000 teenage girls get the opportunity to listen to the lived journeys of some amazing female trailblazers. This in turn allows them to see what a career in STEM is truly like, understand the variety of careers and pathways available and the positive impact that STEM has on our world." I Wish, a multi-award-winning programme showcasing the power of STEM to female students in Ireland and across the globe, has held its renowned annual Showcase since 2015, engaging with over 65,000 students in this time, hosting over 1,000 speakers, and partnering with over 130 industry leaders. I Wish co-founder, Gillian Keating extended her thanks to the leaders in STEM from pharmaceutical, technology, food, sports and engineering sectors taking part in the event: "Each year it is magical to watch the ambitions of young girls from across the country expanding in front of our very eyes as they take in all that they can be through careers in STEM. We're so grateful to our partners, both multinational and indigenous, who take part in the showcase demonstrating t...

Clare Local Development Company CEO Doirín Graham says its not a straightforward process.

Esri Ireland, the market leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), has announced that its digital mapping system is being used by Sport Ireland to digitally map over 12,000 recreational locations and facilities across the island of Ireland. Sport Ireland has launched Get Ireland Active, a national digital hub which maps sports and recreation facilities, walking and cycling trails, public parks, and other amenities around the country to promote higher levels of physical activity. Sport Ireland is the national authority responsible for developing sport and outdoor recreation in Ireland. Based on Esri's ArcGIS system, Sport Ireland and Derilinx created Get Ireland Active, which anticipates over 15,000 visitors per month and aims to inspire people to get involved in sport and other recreational activities to improve their health and wellbeing. The interactive digital map addresses the need for a single, authoritative source of data about sports facilities in Ireland that can provide ways for citizens to become more active, and can also be used to support policy decisions and inform the development of new facilities. Validated data, for the whole of Ireland, is available to stakeholders via the fully interactive online data hub, created with ArcGIS Hub Premium. Users can collate, verify, analyse, and share data in real-time, including development, planning, and socio-demographic information. This provides actionable insights and allows policy makers in central and local government, sporting bodies, and other stakeholders to analyse gaps in the provision of services and easily identify development land or other potential areas that might be available to site new facilities. Sport Ireland conducted audits of all sports facilities in Ireland to create the central data hub, which is flexible and scalable and will continue to be updated as data is made available. Dr Úna May, CEO, Sport Ireland, said: "Esri Ireland's expertise has been crucial in bringing the Get Ireland Active database to life. Their technology allows us to offer a user-friendly platform that has comprehensive information about recreational activities across Ireland. "Technology is transforming how we approach our everyday lives, and it's vital that we use this to our benefit. Our collaboration with Esri Ireland has made this a reality, and we are excited to build upon this work through the continued development of the Get Ireland Active database." Padraig Quinn, Senior Account Manager, Esri Ireland, said: "We are proud to have supported the development of the Get Ireland Active national database, Ireland's interactive activity, sport, and recreation hub. The benefits of having an interactive hub which can direct members of the public to their closest sport or recreation facilities are invaluable, especially coming into the winter months. "Furthermore, the hub will continue to inform future development of sporting facilities across Ireland and embed a love of sport and the outdoors for both present and future generations. We are looking forward to continuing to work with Sport Ireland as the hub continues to grow." See more stories here. Large scale structural works are planned for the Cliffs of Moher in order to deter visitors from going off the official trail and creating safety risks near the cliff edge. It follows an inspection by regulatory body, Sport Ireland which found sections of the trail were ill-equipped for the large number of visitors and that warning signs are consistently ignored, leading to risky behaviour. The review was carried out in August, following two fatal incidents which occurred in May and July, and led to the closure of a 5.5km stretch of the trail. Clare Local Development Company CEO Doirín Graham has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that in light of recent events, the need for a stronger barrier is clear.
