Trae Bodge is a successful lifestyle writer and TV commentator who made the brave leap from beauty brand founder to creating her own unique space in retail and shopping expertise. I loved discussing our shared experiences of separating our identities from our corporate personas. After Trae left RetailMeNot, she discovered that her value wasn't tied to a corporate email address or brand name, but rather to their skills, relationships, and reliability. One of my favorite moments was discussing those inevitable TV mishaps, like when Steve Harvey and Rachael Ray mispronounced Trae's name on air. But what really resonated was Trae's advice about finding "white space" - not just following your passion, but identifying what people actually need and where there's room in the market. Her journey from beauty entrepreneur to becoming one of the go-to shopping experts for major networks is a testament to the power of reinvention and staying true to your expertise. And now, she's launching a foundation to help other midlife entrepreneurs, which perfectly exemplifies how success can come full circle into giving back. Keeping Christmas Stress-Free with Crystal Paine

Christmas is six weeks away, and some folks may already be feeling the stress. The holidays should be a time of spiritual reflection and reconnection with family and friends…but too often, we lose sight of that in the quest for perfection. Crystal Paine is here to help us stay focused on the actual “reason for the season.”Crystal Paine is the founder of MoneySavingMom.com and the author of The Time-Saving Mom: How to Juggle a Lot, Enjoy Your Life, and Accomplish What Matters Most.1. Start with a Christmas BudgetOne of the best ways to enjoy a stress-free holiday is by setting up a Christmas budget. A budget is like a set of guardrails—it keeps you on track, preventing you from overspending or going into debt. Here's a simple way to create one:Determine Your Total Spending Limit: Decide how much you can comfortably spend this season.List Your Recipients: Write down everyone you're buying for and assign a spending amount for each.Track Your Spending: Use a spreadsheet or the FaithFi app to keep a running total of your spending.By creating a budget, you'll know exactly what you have left to spend without sacrificing your financial well-being for the New Year.2. Plan Your Holiday ShoppingIf you tend to overspend during holiday sales, using cash-only or prepaid gift cards is a great way to ensure you stick to your budget. Here are some extra tips:Shop with Gift Cards: Consider using Amazon or store-specific gift cards to control spending.Use Deal Sites: Websites like MoneySavingMom.com and RetailMeNot.com offer deals and coupons.Best Shopping Times: Black Friday week and the following two weeks are generally the best time to find the deals you're looking for. With some planning, you can keep your shopping affordable and enjoyable.3. Keep Holiday Cooking ManageableHoliday cooking can be a joy, but it can also become a significant source of stress. It's advised that you embrace shortcuts where possible:Use Pre-Made Ingredients: Don't feel guilty about using store-bought cookie dough or other pre-made items. Sometimes, it's just as affordable as homemade. One Baking Night: Consider dedicating one evening to bake as a family. Let each person choose one recipe and enjoy the process together without the burden of constant baking all month. These small changes can bring balance to your holiday kitchen, making it a time of joy rather than stress.4. Share the Hosting ResponsibilitiesIf you're hosting family or friends, don't be afraid to ask guests to contribute. Include a note in your invitation encouraging each family to bring a dish. Not only does this lighten your load, but it also makes the event more collaborative and enjoyable for everyone.5. Make a Family “December Bucket List”To bring your family closer during the holiday season, consider creating a “December Bucket List.” Here's an example: Each Family Member Chooses an Activity: Whether it's a movie night, baking cookies, or a trip to see Christmas lights, everyone gets a say.Add It to the Calendar: Schedule these events to create special memories without feeling overwhelmed. This approach ensures everyone has a voice and the season feels special without overloading your calendar.6. Keep Christ the Center of ChristmasAbove all, remember the reason for the season. Using an Advent calendar or devotional is an excellent way to keep the focus on Christ for you and your family. Unwrapping the Greatest Gift: A Family Celebration of Christmas by Ann Voskamp is a fantastic advent devotional if you're looking for a resource for your family to go through this Christmas season. Each day includes a devotional and an ornament symbolizing the story of Christ. This daily ritual not only reminds everyone why we celebrate but also keeps the true spirit of Christmas in the heart of your home.As we approach Christmas, let's aim to make it a season of joy and reflection rather than stress. With a budget, some planning, and a focus on Christ, we can enjoy a holiday that brings peace, love, and lasting memories. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My son and daughter-in-law have adopted four Ukrainian children who are now teenagers and looking for college scholarships. I remember someone previously calling your program and mentioning a resource for finding scholarships that have yet to be widely applied, but I didn't write down the details. Do you have any recommendations for where we can find those types of lesser-known scholarship opportunities?I was told about a Morgan Stanley mutual fund investment that supposedly pays $12,000 per year. It sounds too good to be true. What is your opinion on this, and are there any similar low-risk investments you would recommend?I applied for Social Security benefits after my divorce, but the process has been frustrating. The Social Security office didn't provide all the information I needed up front, and now I'm facing delays getting the required marriage certificate from New York. I would like to know if I can use an old pay stub with my Social Security information to resolve this before they remove me from the system. What do you suggest I do?I'm faithfully paying off a credit card debt of around $8,000 that I took on after the death of my mother. I'm currently paying $320 per month. My wife is willing to help me pay this off once she finishes paying off her own credit card. Should I stay the course with the $320 monthly payments or look into rolling over the debt and opening a new credit card with a balance transfer option?Resources Mentioned:MoneySavingMom.comUnwrapping the Greatest Gift: A Family Celebration of Christmas by Ann VoskampFastWeb.com | Peterson's Scholarship Search | Scholarships.comChristian Credit CounselorsLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. “We saw a lot of our event creators, who were just doing real-life events, start to do more online events. So we very quickly pivoted to give them all the tools to do online events. Now we are seeing hybrid events, event creators who might be sitting in New York and used to just do a small, local event with 20-25 attendees every week, are now suddenly doing that in a hybrid format, where they still get 20-25 attendees in New York but they have 10-15 folks from London or 5-10 from Mexico City attending those events. I think that's been good, our creators suddenly have realized they have a global footprint and they can choose to operate and the most successful ones do that pretty effectively” Join Spandana Bhattacharya and Javier Torres on Wharton Tech Toks as they talk to Vivek Sagi, Chief Technology Officer at Eventbrite. Listen in to learn more about Eventbrite's innovative approach to event creation, how they are using machine learning to improve the creator and user experience, what headwinds and tailwinds the company is facing, and the launch of Eventbrite's ad business. After 15 years as co-founder of the cult cosmetic brand Three Custom Color Specialists, Trae Bodge felt like she hit a wall. She decided it was time to branch out. Her search for a corporate spot in her industry yielded nothing so she turned her attention to writing freelance. Discovering her love for sharing budget friendly living ideas landed her a job at RetailMeNot, eventually becoming their spokesperson. A layoff prompted another search for what was next, she took matters into her own hands and launched her career as a smart-shopping expert.    Today Trae is an accomplished lifestyle journalist and TV commentator specializing in smart-shopping, personal finance, and retail for over a decade. She has appeared on TV over 1,000 times; including Today Show, GMA3, NBC Nightly News, Inside Edition, and network affiliates nationwide. She is a frequent speaker at conferences, on podcasts and IG Lives, addressing such topics as media relations, entrepreneurship, and how to navigate the media landscape as an on-air talent and expert source. She has co-founded the media coaching firm, One Take, sharing her career expertise with others.  In this episode, Nada sits down with Trae to discuss how not being a fit for one industry led to finding the perfect fit for her. Trae opens up about how difficult it was for her to find what was next, and the value of a Whisper Network. She credits her success to her tenacity, hard work,  and living her brand. She also emphatically states that entrepreneurship is not for everyone. Trae leaves us a free tip suggesting the easiest way to save money is with a browser extension from a coupon site like CouponCabin, Slickdeals, Rakuten, or Honey. Check out Trae's website. You may know Trae Bodge from her more than 1,000 television appearances as an intelligent shopping expert. But, Trae has deep roots in beauty. You can say that she was practically born into the business because her mother owned a shop in her small Massachusetts town where they sold creams, soaps, and other products. Trae initially wanted to be an artist but found a way to use those talents in beauty with a custom-blending company called Visage Beaute. She initially started working for the brand in Massachusetts and later moved to the counter at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. When the brand was sold to Revlon, Trae actively campaigned for a job at Kiehl's, then privately owned. As part of a collaborative team at their 3rd Avenue store in NYC, she created a position overseeing their catalog sales. While there, she banded her savings together with a former colleague at Visage and another friend to form Three Custom Color. They not only custom-blended shades, but they also recreated shopper's favorite discontinued shades in their NYC retail store/lab. After leaving that business, Trae thought she would end up at a big cosmetic company in product development or another role, but wearing too many hats made her hard to place, so she stuck out on her own and began writing more. She landed her first corporate job at RetailMeNot and began doing television appearances, which morphed into a new career.  After being laid off, Trae started making appearances on behalf of several clients. She's noticed an uptick in bookings since the social reckoning and sees that as a good thing, and has also adjusted to doing segments in her home. But doing television isn't easy; Trae shares the secrets to booing and delivering segments, and here's a hint, there's no such thing as winging it! Because she knows that others interested in television could benefit from her expertise, she has partnered with a colleague on One Take Media.  And best of all, Trae shares five tips on perfecting your pivot.  Check out all of this and more on this episode.

Did you know that almost 80% of online shopping carts are abandoned at checkout? I know that sounds REALLY high, but if you don't believe me, check out this latest statistic on shopping cart abandonment from Listrak. Is your online store a part of the statistics, too? When was the last time you checked your store's shopping cart abandonment rate? Did you even know that you can check? If not, today's podcast episode is a must-listen. There are many reasons why someone adds items from your online store to their shopping cart and leaves without buying. It could be your shipping charges, the fact that they weren't 100% sure if they wanted to buy or they weren't sure if your site was secure, your checkout process has too many steps and many other reasons. In today's podcast episode I share my story about why I recently abandoned an online shopping cart at a jewelry website, even though I REALLY wanted to purchase the jewelry. I talk about one mistake that the website was making that was steered me away for actually checking out. Are you making this mistake, too? Three mistakes you could be making with your checkout process 1. Promo Code When someone checks out at your online store, do they see a field for a "promo" or "discount" code? If so, what do you think happens physiologically to them if they don't have a promo code to enter? It's exactly what happened to me when I was shopping at the jewelry website and it happens to me ALL the time when I shop online (and I shop online A LOT). I usually go to RetailMeNot.com to search for a coupon code, but what happens if there's no coupon code available? There have been many studies that show that a promo code field can be hurting your online sales. Check out this one from Kiss Metrics. 2. Payment Options When you're first starting out, it makes sense to offer PayPal as the only checkout option on your website. There are no monthly fees with PayPal and PayPal has more than 173 million users. Their logo is very recognizable and has a lot of trust built in, but what happens when someone wants to check out at your store, but doesn't want to use PayPal? They leave and go somewhere else. This actually happened to me yesterday when I was purchasing an online gift card for my sister's birthday. The spa that I wanted to get it from only offered PayPal and I only have a PayPal account for my business, not personal, and I didn't want to use my business account to pay for a personal gift. After I tried to checkout without signing in to PayPal, I got an error message that my email address was already associated with a PayPal account and I HAD to log in to that PayPal account in order to complete my purchase. When I tried a different email address, I got another error message saying that the credit card that I wanted to pay with was already associated with a PayPal account and I HAD to log in to my PayPal account. Needless to say, I didn't complete my purchase and instead purchased a gift card at another spa that didn't require me to use PayPal. There are so many payment options now that allow you to take credit cards directly - Stripe is an easy choice because, like PayPal, they don't charge monthly fees and their transaction fees are exactly the same as PayPal's, so you have no excuse not to accept other forms of payment. There are also many other options that offer lower fees, so it's always a good idea to check around. 3. Checkout as a Guest When I had my online t-shirt store about 30% of my customer chose the "checkout as a guest" option. Each year the holidays seem to sneak up on us as does the shopping. Planning for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years can be stressful enough without the worry of last-minute decisions. This year why not try something new to ease the holiday stress so you can add more enjoyment and cheer while still accomplishing everything; shopping wise, that is? Here are my tips for Holiday Shopping: #1 Keep a Notebook of What Friends and Family Need/Like Pre-Order Your Journal Here One of my dearest friends is an Angel when it comes to listening. Because of this each year, she gives gifts that mean a great deal to each person. It could've been the smallest comment about what a person likes, but she stores it away in her memory, or writes it down in a Christmas Journal, and is therefore never stressed when it comes to ideas. #2 Start Early It's no surprise that getting a head start on your shopping would be one of the first tips I give. Don't wait until the last minute because it usually costs more and waste time when you could be cooking some favorite holiday treats. #3 Choose one Family or Person at a Time to Shop For When you're ready to start gift buying, pick one family or person at a time. For instance, in our exchange, we draw families and not just individuals, so when I go shopping, I choose gifts for that entire family at one time, and then I can safely place a checkmark by their name as being complete. This is far more effective than buying one gift on several different days, or weeks even, and then not remembering who you got what. #4 Save Coupons, Hit Sales, or Save Items in Your Cart Online You can add items to your cart online and then get notified when they go on sale. This is a great way to keep your costs down and still get that perfect gift. The same goes for saving coupons, waiting for sales, or finding discounts in magazines, newspapers, or through apps like RetailMeNot. #5 Shop Local to Find Unique Buys You can find some fantastic and unique items when you shop local. Box stores are fine, but they carry a lot of the same things. #6 Regift There is nothing wrong with regifting an item, as long as you remember who gave it to you. You don't want to make the mistake of giving it back:(. I would rather a present get used by someone who I know would love it than to let it sit in the box, untouched because I don't know what else to do with it. #7 Buy Second Hand There is no shame in buying a gift from a second-hand store. I do this every year. Sometimes I buy something and repaint or vamp it up, or sometimes things still have a price tag or are practically new. Children especially don't care where a gift is purchased; all they see are presents under the tree. #8 Make Something Homemade If you go on Pinterest, you can find a ton of ideas or DIY tutorials. You may not need ideas if you are a crafty person by nature. Why not use your talents and make unique gifts like Homemade Vanilla Extract, a piece of furniture, or pillows. The size doesn't matter, only the intent and thoughtfulness behind each gift. #9 Don't Buy a Gift Just Because Someone Bought You One This is probably the worst mistake people make. They think they need to buy the whole world a gift. When someone buys you a gift, accept it graciously, even if you did not get that person anything. You can always return the favor if you want to call it that, later with a card or invite for dinner or coffee. You don't need to run to the store, quick pick out the first thing you see just to give something in return. That person is going to know that's what you did, especially if the holiday has passed. Remember, do things from the heart, not because you're trying to fill a quota. #10 Always Keep the Interest of Others in Mind When You Shop This might sound strange, but a lot of people buy a gift because it's something they like. Not everyone, even your best friends,
