A new Director Series at The Other BananaWe have long debated a series on director Bala. You could say that Bala is not Bala anymore and his films are increasingly becoming difficult to meaningfully engage with but, the Bala 1999-2010 was something else.A new voice broke out in Tamil cinema in 1999 with Sethu. One of the several assistants of Balu Mahendra who will go on to make a mark in the following years, Bala ushered in an auterist sensibility with unique technique, point of view, characters and settings. The Bala universe was instantly recognizable. In the first of the series, we begin with his debut in 1999 which not only kickstarted his career but also redeemed Vikram's career and pushed him into stardom. With one film, a new star actor as well as a star director were born. Listen on.ParticipantsAdityaAnanthaHariEdited by Anantha

In this episode writer Aditya Mani Jha joins Deepauk and Aditya to talk about two 2024 films, both Telugu originals, and adapted-inspired from two Hindu epics - Mahabharata and Ramayana. One is Nag Ashwin's Kalki 2898 AD and the other is Prasanth Varma's Hanu-Man. One has a stellar pan-Indian star cast with the likes of Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone et al while the other has Teja Sajja, Amritha Aiyar, Vinay Rai among others. One has big budget and larger scope. The other has a big heart and novel ideas. We talk about what the films get right, what they do not and which Hindu epic is more interesting, adaptable and more. We at The Other Banana believe that director Girish AD is doing something incredible with the genre of romantic comedy and coming of age. With the recent big hit Premalu, that awed audiences across south India, we decided to take a look at all his films that show steady progression in certain genre conventions as well as successful attempts at breaking them with memorable writing, characters, comedy and performances. In this episode, Poorvaja S, journalist from The Hindu joins Aditya and Deepauk to talk about Girish and his three films so far - Thanneer Mathan Dinangal, Super Sharanya and Premalu. There is a lot of giggling and laughter but also some observations into what makes Girish AD unique and how he has revitalized the genre in India. Listen on. We couldn't ignore Malayalam cinema's great run in the first couple of months of 2024 so decided to talk about Lijo Jose Pellissery's Malaikottai Vaaliban which received a lukewarm to polarizing reception after huge expectations. Right after the universally feted Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Malaikottai Vaaliban couldn't have been more different, a fantastical tale that eschews the diktats of narrative cinema and leaps from one genre to another with every scene. Starring Mohanlal, Katha Nandi, Sonalee Kulkarni, Hareesh Peradi, Danish Sait, Manoj Moses and others, there is a lot in the film to like and talk about. Aditya is joined by his namesake writer Aditya Mani Jha and Mint Lounge's film critic Uday Bhatia, three people who immensely enjoyed the film to talk about what worked, the influences and whether a sequel can be expected or not. Credits Banner: SP Entertainments Cast: Venu, Shaheen, Prema, Giribabu, Gundu Sudarshan, Brahmanandham, Ali, Anantha, Giridhar, Sudha, Chandramohan, Prakash Raj Music: Mani Sharma Cinematography: K Prasad Editing: Marthand K Venkatesh Story & Dialogues: Trivikram Director & Screenplay: Ram Prasad Producer: Shyam Prasad Theatrical Release Date: 10th November 2000 Interesting Facts We met Ram Prasad for the first time when he was assisting B Gopal for the film 'Gang Master' in the year 1996. He is a hard worker and a very sincere guy. His experience helped us in the making of 'Chiru Navvuto'. He worked without an assistant for that film most of the times. I give all the credit for the success of the film to G Ram Prasad for his direction. During Nuvve Kavali making, Trivikram had simultaneously penned story and dialogues for Chirunavvutho. After the unit of SP Entertainments returned from Canada after canning three songs on Venu and Shaheen, it commenced its scheduled at Hyderabad recently. After giving a good thought on various titles, atlast it was decided to call this different love story as Chirunavvu (Smile). A situational song was picturised on Venu and his friends alongwith 250 junior artistes at Annapoorna Studios. The budget for Chirunavvuto was a little over 2 crores and it collected a share of 5 crores and was a hit at the box office. Ran for 100 days in multiple places Writing/Direction: So basically the movie summed up in a line is a man who thinks with his brain and heart and cannot be friends with a girl after expressing his love. Whether or not he's successfully is the story. This movie is literally a sequel to Swavyamvaram. Same producer, same hero, same writer, and literally same cast with addition of Brahmanadham and LB Sriram. And almost same story as well. There it was love is greater than marriage, here its you love with different mindsets affects people after learning abut their mentalities in love. Thats it. But a great 2nd half and excellent dialogues makes the difference for Navvutho. 3 characters Venu, Sandhya and Pratap you get to see their intentions and the movie actually places Sandhya is a very confused state and you start to feel for her. Venu says I always talk with my heart and do whats in my mind and he cannot be friends with Sandhya after expressing his love. He wont force anything. Sandhya meanwhile likes Pratap but one scene int he jewelry store shows how controlling he is and doesnt care about Sandhya's likes or wishes only his. Already a red flag. And then Pratap cheated Venu's maradalu which already shows hes not a good person. The dialogues, characterizations, and sensibilities were very well done. Also the scene where Sandhya talks to her mom and who will we be happy with: she says madam preminche vaalu kante, manalni preminche vaale tho jeevitham baguntadi. After hearing this, Sandhya decides that venu is the right person for her. That being said, this review is coming 24 years after the movie released for the first time and I found it to be exhausting with this trope. Literally of Trivikram's movies as a writer dealt with marriage and issues and specifically hero likes heroine, but heroine marriage gets arranged with someone else and in the climax she realizes she likes hero and goes back to him only. Literally every single one: Swayvamvaram. Nuvve Kavali, Chiru Navvutho, Nuvvu Naaku Nachav, Manmadhudhu, Malliswari, Vasu, the only exception is Jai Chiranjeeva becayse theres no pelli there only killing of Arbaaz Khan and Im so tired of seeing this trope. From Swayamvaravam all the way to Geetha Govindam literally every single love story or rom com same exact ending. Solo as well. It gets exhausting and tiring. Comedy is not Trivikram range that we are used to either. Its just something but the dialogues for the majority are incredible. Direction by G Ram Prasad is very good. I was never bored at any point and movie is very breezy throughout.

Hello! In this episode, Deepauk, Anantha and Aditya talk about Roby Varghese Raj's Kannur Squad starring Mammootty, Rony David Raj, Azees Nedumangad, Kishore and others. The film is a thriller based on a real squad of police officers who are tasked with the toughest cases. The film is very similar to last year's Kuttavum Shikshayum directed by Rajeev Ravi and H Vinoth's Tamil film Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru. Both the films, like Kannur Squad, feature a team of police officers operating beyond their familiar turf, traveling to different parts of the country in search of criminals on the run. We also look at how the films stack up and what they do differently with familiar premise. We also talk about Mammootty who is having a terrific late innings in his career and a particularly great 2023 with Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (check out our episode on the film), Kannur Squad and Jeo Baby's Kaathal The Core that is currently in theatres. And we are back with an episode on one of the films of the year- Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo. If you haven't yet heard of the film, crawl out of that rock and here we go- starring Vijay, Trisha, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun etc, the film, after Vikram and the introduction of Lokesh Cinematic Universe, was THE Tamil film if not Indian film that a huge fan base was looking out for. Now that it's out and we can have a spoilers filled discussion, we got Deepauk, Anantha and one of our returning guests Equanimus to talk about it. There is a lot of crap out there in the name of engaging with this polarizing film that's perfectly good for the most part but if we may say so ourselves, nothing beats this one. Listen on. We return with a Telugu film, a massive hit from 2022. Just when we thought only male star driven, machismo action films could do well in theatres, we had films based on romance with author backed pairs work their charm at the box office. One was Thiruchitrambalam. The other was Sita Ramam directed by Hani Raghavapudi. Sita Ramam stars Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur, two stars made to glisten the screen. In this episode Aditya joins Sal of Salandthebadpun on Twitter and our returning guest Amrita to talk about the film, how the romance works with the help of the actors' charm and great looks, the set and costume design, the casting of Rashmika and the way her character is written. We also talk about the fragmented politics of the film, muted but always grating in the background. Participants: Aditya Sal Amrita Edited by Anantha.
One of our listeners think it would be a good idea for us to talk about the 2006 Chimbu Deven's historic-fiction "Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi". We too think this is a great idea. 23am Pulikesi is one of the best comedies of Tamil cinema in the last 20 years featuring Vadivelu, Nassar, Ilavarasu, Sriman, Thambi Ramaiah, Manobala and many others. We have Anantha, Ashoka and Rajiv touch upon the film, its comedy, the performances, the homage it pays to its predecessor: Uthama Puthiran, how it could be a modern office-drama masquerading as a period-piece and several other things. ps: Rajiv has his own crime-fiction podcast on Spotify named "Detective Mathimaran". You can listen to it here.

Among all the epic star vehicles and action extravaganzas like Pushpa: The Rise, RRR, KGF and Vikram, we had a seemingly little film that became a box office hit. It's not a little film by any means. It has Dhanush, Nithya Menen, Prakash Raj, Bharathiraja in the lead and directed by Mithran Jawahar. The film, Thiruchitrambalam, is just more grounded and subtle, the opposite of what people have come to expect from theatrical films. And yet, this romantic comedy, a genre that's hard to come by in Tamil cinema, is not just a wonderful film but also found its audience. To talk about the film, we have Aditya and Anantha. And joining them is writer, journalist and film critic Subha Rao who makes a return to the podcast. She had earlier joined us for the episode on stars and promising directors. The podcast returns to Tamil cinema with one of the classics of the 1980s. Produced by AVM and written and directed by Visu, Samsaram Adhu Minsaram, released in 1986, remains one of the most memorable and talked about family dramedies. Starring Lakshmi, Manorama, Raghuvaran, Kishmu, Chandrashekar, Visu, Kamala Kamesh, Delhi Ganesh, Ilavarasi and others, the film is remembered for its great lines and great performance of the ensemble. To discuss the film we have one of our regular guests, Balajee Ge aka Localteaparty who recently co-wrote the Sony LIV Tamil web series Meme Boys. Joining him is someone we've been looking to get on to our podcast for long and finally the stars aligned. Rajiv Rajaram who wears many hats, the most recent as the creator of Meme Boys. Vivek Athreya's Ante Sundaraniki released in June to mixed reviews. Telugu cinema is where romantic comedy is thriving and this film was Vivek Athreya's follow up to the immensely popular, hilarious Brochevarevarura. This also had great leads in Nani and Nazriya. While the film failed to click in the box office its Netflix release renewed the debate and the film was received warmly compared to how it did theatrically. Since we trust Telugu cinema with romcoms in this podcast, we thought let's talk about the film. Our podcast regular Krupa Ge, writer and author (check out her books - Rivers Remember and the more recent What We Know About Her) joined us for this episode along with Aditya and Anantha. They had polar opposite reactions to the film. Listen on. Participants: Aditya Krupa Ge Anantha Edited by Ashoka
A film like Chennai 600028 needs no introduction but here is an attempt anyway - a small gang of first timers and amateurs, however privileged by their industry backgrounds, came together to make a movie on amateur cricket - street cricket to be precise - and male friendship. Venkat Prabhu bandied together Shiva, Premji, Nithin Sathya, Aravind Akash, Sampath, Jai, Vijay Vasanth, Ajay Raj and of course, Yuvan Shankar Raja to create a film whose infection charm and fun might have been felt during the set but with a few jitters as SP Balasubrahmanyam and his son SPB Charan put their money into it. The film completed fifteen years recently and what opened lukewarm with so many newcomers are all names today we always associate together as a gang and not by individual, went on to become a sleeper cult hit. To celebrate these fifteen years of repeat watches, Aditya, Anantha and Balajee get together to talk about the film and the memories associated with it. Cinema Express Editor in Chief and podcast friend and guest Sudhir Srinivasan interviewed Venkat Prabhu for the same occasion and it came up during our discussion. The interview is linked below Participants: Aditya Anantha (also editor of this episode) Balajee Venkat Prabhu interview with Sudhir Srinivasan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGhNELP6fsc
In this podcast we visit the challenges posed by Waterfall and Agile (scrum), the most popular methodologies for software development. While examining Agile, Anantha helps us question some of the assumptions behind few of its practices like - working with small ‘self-sufficient' teams, keeping design and requirements fluid & use of standard sprint cycles. He describes how by understanding the wrong assumptions, and by exposing the generic conflict underlying all software development processes, a truly agile software development method can be evolved. As the title suggests, Raj B. Shetty's latest Kannada film Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana contains its share of mythological undertones. But the film is more than just that almost reinventing the gangster drama at an epic scale with very curious passage of character developments. Set in Mangaluru, it tells the story of Hari (Rishab Shetty) and Shiva (Raj B. Shetty), the backstory of how they climb up the ladder of crime in the city and the eventual souring of the relationship. The film's conspicous homo-eroticism was noticed by many and how well it does what it does with it and the film's complete disregard for women in its universe has been topics of debate. For this episode, we have full house of The Other Banana team - Aditya, Deepauk, Anantha and Ashoka discuss the setting, the relationship between Shiva and Hari, what the film does well and what it does not, the character of Brahmmaya played by Gopal Krishna Deshpande, the writing and filmmaking in Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana. Comedy and romantic comedy is thriving in Telugu cinema. It's not the case with other industries of similar size. This year, cinema theatres briefly opened before the second wave of the pandemic in India and a small film that no one saw coming made a huge splash. It became one of the biggest hits critically and commercially. Maybe it was the timing, maybe it was the nature of the film or the absolute abandon with which it was made, the audiences couldn't have enough of it. It is indeed Anudeep KV's Jathi Ratnalu, a comedy that pushes the genre in every fashion, may it be the dark part of it or the silly. Jathi Ratnalu is streaming on Amazon Prime. The film stars Naveen Polishetty, Rahul Ramakrishna, Priyadarshi, Faria Abdullah, Murli Sharma et al. Aditya and Anantha are joined by writer, director, actor Rahul Ravindran. Rahul made one of the best romantic comedies in recent times - Chi La Sow - for which he won the National Award for Best Original Screenplay. We talked about our favorite sequences from the film, why comedy and romcom are doing great in Telugu cinema, Naveen's career arc so far, whether the film translates well for non-Telugu audiences and more. We return to our Mysskin series with his 2013 film - Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum or The Wolf and the Lamb starring Sri, Mysskin, Shaji Chen, Adithya, Baby Chaitanya, Angel Glady et al. The film is a truckload of Mysskin goodies, the Madras after dark shining through as the entire film is events over the course of a single night. It throws up and answers a lot of questions - what is right and what is wrong, good and evil with everything in between, how situations and decisions contextualized to the events determine more about oneself than we might assume. The film is ripe for both mining Mysskin's aesthetics and his philosophical musings. It might just be Mysskin's best film so far. To talk about the film, we have with us Angel Glady who wears many caps - actor, playwright, theatre activist, dancer etc. She plays the role of Bharati in Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum, credited as vanadevathai (forest fairy). She shares with us her thoughts on the film, working with Mysskin and some great anecdotes from the time of filming. Glady is joined by Deepauk, Anantha and Ashoka. Listen on.

“The whole of hierarchy is just wrong. It's about passion and it's about letting the person explore themselves. That's how I think education should be. It should not be a mechanised…it should be a place to explore. It's a place to have dialogues."Anantha Duraiappah took the position as inaugural Director of the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) based in New Delhi, India, in 2014. And we are back with the part two of the series on Singeetam Srinivasa Rao's Michael Madana Kama Rajan. In this episode we take a deep dive into the characters of MMKR beginning with the four Kamal Haasans - Michael, Madan, Kameshwaran and Raju followed by the other characters who are all equally memorable but then we are never objective in our likes and dislikes, are we? Listen on to find out why we unanimously chose Raju as our favorite Kamal and what we like about the other characters. Once again Aditya, Deepauk and Anantha are joined by Equanimus.
One never tires of watching or talking about this landmark film in Tamil Cinema starring four Kamal Haasans, Nagesh, Khushboo, Urvashi, Nassar, Roopini, SN Lakshmi, Delhi Ganesh, Manorama et al. Singeetam Srinivasa Rao directed film of a Kamal Haasan screenplay with dialogues by Crazy Mohan, a truly collaborative mammoth effort - Michael Madana Kama Rajan - came into being in 1990 and has been etched in Tamil cinema lore forever. It's a film that merits more than one episode and we are approaching each part focusing on one detail around the film. In the first part, we talk about MMKR's folktale origins, other cinema and histories that it has taken inspirations from and its tribute to doyens and history of Tamil cinema. Equanimus joins Aditya, Anantha and Deepauk for this series on MMKR. Linked here & here are the interviews of Singeetam Srinivasa Rao mentioned in the episode.
While the anniversaries - 10th, 25th or 30th - of many films were celebrated this year, one title probably got ignored by a large section of the media. Balu Mahendra's Sathi Leelavathi released 25 years ago. It had Kalpana, Ramesh Arvind and Heera Rajagopal in the lead with cameos - more like star attractions - from Kamal Haasan and Kovai Sarala. We thought of revisiting this very funny film that deals with a serious issue and reevaluate what works and what doesn't. Max and Anantha are joined by Suman Kumar and Jestme. Jestme is a returning guest of our podcast. Suman wears multiple hats. He is a novelist, stand up comedian and screen writer. He co-writes the Amazon Prime web series The Family Man.
