This week, I speak to Nikki Muller is a Swiss-Filipina, Third Culture Kid. The FLY Entertainment Artist landed her first regional TV job when she was just 15 years old, hosting MTV@Mbassy. At 20 she was nominated as “Best Entertainment Presenter” at the Asian Television Awards while interning with Diane Sawyer for ABC News in New York City. She's covered tennis and motor sports on Fox Sports Asia, talked food science on National Geographic and moderated discussions ranging from sustainability, inclusivity in the workplace and the future of tech. While working at the United Nations Headquarters, Nikki's interest in organizational leadership and cultural competence was first sparked. Nikki now focuses her area of expertise on the Third Culture Kid (TCK) experience and the unique lessons that come from having lived a highly mobile and multi-cultural childhood. Nikki, and many TCKs like her, are acclimatised to disruption from an early age and seek out the opportunities that accompany change. As a trained journalist, Nikki's research on identity, belonging and managing transitions is extremely relevant to today's most significant workplace challenges. We're seeing organisations prioritise diversity, equity and inclusion as they face remarkable changes within their own companies across all sectors. Nikki's keynotes share small gearshifts that can make a big difference in reinvigorating collaborative teams amidst uncertainty. Her keynotes are brought to life through her own personal stories and interwoven with the latest science around the power of positive transitions and the tools to cultivate a culture of belonging. Having spent her formative years navigating copious change and grappling with a search for roots and community, Nikki has found a way to take the lessons of her childhood and make them relevant to today's most pressing challenges and opportunities. For International TCK Day we are going back in our archives to our conversation with Michèle Phoenix from Season 1, Episode 22.   Michèle is known around the world as an advocate for Third Culture Kids (TCKs) and the children of missionaries. Listen in for a glimpse into the world of TCKs! “Passport culture plus adoptive culture(s) equals Third Culture Kid (TCK).” “Because I have those two cultures in me, my closest sense of belonging is with others who are, like me, multiculturally formed in their formative years. There's a misconception that third culture is actually my individual third culture that I form out of the two that shaped me [...] but actually the term means that we find belonging with others who are also third cultured.” “My differences were similar to their differences, and that I wasn't weird; I was a TCK.” “Mostly belonging in multiple places increases their skillset; it makes them bridge builders.” “To ask them to figure out what is uniquely one culture and uniquely another in the way they think and in the way they think, even in the way they speak, is going to be a real challenge for them.” “Something that feels fairly minor to a monocultural adult who has lived multiculturally for a while might feel like this tidal wave of all of these emotions coming back to the TCK or MK.” Article: Nine Tips for Living Well in a Season of Grief “The enormity of the blessing and the strength that comes from growing up as a TCK is immeasurable.  You have blessed them in ways that you probably won't ever be able to fully realize.” “Generalizations about TCKs are not always entirely helpful, but knowing what the majority of them tend toward I think can be a really helpful thing in mentoring them and walking with them.” “Because of our experience seeing things done differently in other parts of the world [...] we can start to draw people from their highly selective clusters toward each other.” Learn more about Michèle's ministry here! Many of us lead very fragmented lives. If we're lucky, we set aside a couple hours a week to what really lights us up in between our busy "9-to-5"s and hectic social and family obligations. I find it very inspiring, therefore, to connect with people like this week's guest Sharanya Rao, who succeed in "bringing their whole selves" to their day to day and follow their passion. Sharanya is an expert on making transitions, having lived in 4 countries, and changed careers from being a commercial litigation lawyer to government and then to becoming a professional coach. Now, as the head of Global Coaching Works and the Artistic Director of Leela - An Indian Community Theatre, she focuses on empowering individuals and developing their potential through Co-Active Coaching, mindfulness and creativity. She is a champion of diversity and inclusion, and a true believer in the power of community. In this episode, we touch on numerous topics including: The concept of a Third Culture Kid (TCK), and the implications of straddling the cultural norms of three countries (India, Singapore, and the United States) on adaptability and authenticity. Further, how this unique background helped Sharanya navigate a career shift from law into leadership coaching. An overview of Leela, and its showcase project Anklets in the Boardroom, a project story-telling inspired in part by the Theater of the Oppressed and leaders such as Deepa Purushothaman; how these initiatives helped Sharanya follow her passion and give voice to South Asian women struggling with workplace discrimination. Exciting announcements for the Leela team, including funding from the City of Austin and a partnership with Austin PBS. The concept of svadharma and how can it help us achieve the show's mission of breaking free of templates How somewhat "dodgy" questions in the foreign service application process contributed to Sharanya's disenchantment with this profession How the field of coaching, and connections formed through the International Coaching Federation (ICF) provided Sharanya with a community where people would "bring their whole self to work." Having returned to Germany three times during her 22 years of expatriation, Wiebke understands that each repatriation experience can differ based on life phases and specific locations.  Christina Kapaun, is also an Intercultural Trainer who has lived in Brazil, the US, and is currently in Stuttgart, Germany. Together, they support repats and their families throughout the various phases of expatriation. They believe in the power of collaboration during repatriation, which led to their group coaching collaboration called "Arriving," specifically designed for repatriates. Experiencing culture shock, when returning to one's passport country happens more often than we tend to talk about. All seems well upon reentry– loads of warm welcomes, a favorite home-cooked meal, and the sense of ‘being home'. However, unexpected differences start popping up and all of a sudden we feel we do not fit in. For example, during a walk on the Potomac in Maryland with friends, my youngest son asked if there were crocodiles. In Zimbabwe, we were cautious about approaching water due to hippos and crocs. Naturally, he asked this question, but it was not something other children and parents were familiar with. These instances occur frequently, even when we do not repatriate, making it more challenging.   In this conversation, we cover key topics like: What are the most painful aspects of repatriation that individuals face and how can those be navigated? What is culture shock and some ways to cope with it? Cultural dissonance and its significance during the repatriation process As parents, how can we support our children during the repatriation process?  How can we view reentry as an opportunity to understand and know oneself deeper rather than a liability?   Are you struggling with the decision to move back home? I've got good news for you. Confident decision-making is a skill. Book your Decision Accelerator session and unlock this decision in just 60 minutes. the in-betweenish pod

In this minisode we're going back to the origin story of in-betweenish, explaining why and how it came to be. It all started with a few simple questions about a decade ago:Where is home? What is a home? This lead me on a journey to discover the term Third Culture Kid (TCK). Researchers John and Ruth Useem, an American sociologist and anthropologist couple, first coined the term Third Culture Kids when they were living abroad in India with their family. According to Dr. Ruth Useem, being a Third Culture Kid explained “Children who accompany their parents into another culture [usually for a parent's career choice.]” Sometimes the term Adult Third Culture Kid, ATCK, is used to describe adults who had a TCK upbringing.Simple formula used to understand Third Culture Kids: A [parents' culture] + B [host country/countries culture(s)] = C [your own third culture]Years later, when doing research for the inception of the in-betweenish pod, I came across the more inclusive term Cross-Cultural Kids (CCK). This new model was researched and developed by Ruth E. Van Reken and encompasses more diverse experiences of people who exist across different cultures for any reason. In her research, Van Reken outlines 7 Cross-Cultural Kid categories and they are:Bi-racial/ bi-cultural childrenChildren of ImmigrantsChildren of RefugeesChildren of Minorities (Privileged or Marginalized)International AdoptionsTraditional Third Culture Kids  (Foreign Service Kids, Corporate Brats, Missionary Kids, Military Brats)Domestic Third Culture Kids If you recognize yourself in this CCK upbringing and you want to share your story, reach out to me directly. In this episode, my guest Brooke Wiens discusses the topic "Cultural Adaptability in a Multicultural World (Third Culture Kids – TCKs)." Ms. Wiens holds the title of Emergent Bilingual Teacher in the most diverse elementary schools in the state of Missouri – North Kansas City Schools. She is a traveler, learner, coffee drinker, global thinker, a Third Culture Kid (TCK), and a board member of Interaction International, a ministry focused on providing resources for TCKs. Third culture kids (TCK) is a term coined by US sociologist Ruth Hill Useem in the 1950s for children who spent a significant part of their developmental years in places that are not their parents' homeland. Globalization has increased the number of TCKs to over 220 million globally. Ms. Wiens grew up in West Africa, returning to the US with her family every 4 years. She went through the process of re-entry into the US at the end of her high school years and took this experience with her into her work with the ministry Interaction International and her work as a teacher. Ms. Wiens emphasizes the need to help kids from other cultures feel safe. She sees in her role as a teacher that she is able to connect with families and help kids feel a sense of belonging.

Michèle Phoenix is known around the world as an advocate for Third Culture Kids (TCKs) and the children of missionaries. Pollock and Van Reken define a Third Culture Kid (TCK) as a person who has spent a considerable amount of their formative developmental period outside their birth country or culture due to their parents’ working outside of the country of origin (Pollock & Van Reken, 2001; Choi & Luke, 2011; Melles & Frey, 2014). Adults who lived in these circumstances are referred to as Adult Third Culture Kids (ATCK’s) (Melles & Frey, 2014). As a result of their experiences, young ATCK’s have difficulty fully identifying with any one culture and may experience multiple challenges in forming adult relationships upon repatriating to their culture or country of origin (Choi & Luke, 2011). A review of the literature on TCK’s and ATCK’s shows little research has been done in the area of relationships after repatriation. I am interested in understanding the lived experience of TCKs so that we can better address the issues with repatriation.

Today’s Mindful Expat Guest is Josh Sandoz! Josh is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) currently living and working in Seattle Washington (in the US), where he specializes in working with expats, repatriated expats, and Third Culture Kids (TCKs). Josh not only works with TCKs, but he actually is an adult TCK himself! Born in South Korea to foreign missionary parents, he grew up as part of a highly international community. He has worked for Interaction International – an organization geared toward TCKs and internationally mobile families – where he provided transition seminars for adolescent TCKs before becoming a therapist. Josh is also the person behind the International Therapist Directly, a wonderful website that he created as a way to help people around the world locate therapists who speak their own language and who are sensitive to some of the unique needs of people living abroad. What you’ll learn in this episode: • About Josh’s story of growing up in a highly international community and his continued involvement in working with globally mobile individuals and families as a therapist. • What is a “Third Culture Kid” (TCK) and what are some of the characteristics of the TCK experience? • Some of the common struggles — as well as gifts — of TCKs (and why it’s sometimes hard to think of these in a binary way). • How parents raising children abroad can support their TCKs and help them develop emotional resilience as they grow up in and between cultures. Resources mentioned in this episode: • Josh mentioned some of his work with Interaction International, an organization geared toward TCKs and internationally mobile families. • To learn more about Ruth Useem’s research and her original use of the word “Third Culture Kid,” you can visit her website www.tckworld.com. • Josh mentioned the book, Third Culture Kids: The Experience of Growing Up Among Worlds, by David Pollock & Ruth Van Reken, which is a great source of information about the TCK experience. • Josh also mentioned the book, Foreign to Familiar: A Guide to Understanding Hot- and Cold-Climate Cultures, by Sarah Lanier, as a nice introduction to some basic concepts around culture and cultural differences. • We also discussed the International Therapist Directory, which Josh created as a way of connecting people with therapists who are familiar with some of the unique challenges and experiences of TCKs and other people living abroad. This is a wonderful resource for anyone around the world searching for a therapist. It’s organized according to country and also has a worldwide section for therapists who work with clients remotely (either online or by phone). More about Josh and how to follow up with him: Josh has a private therapy practice in Seattle, Washington, where he works with expats, repatriated expats, and TCKs. To learn more about his therapy practice or to connect with him by email, you can visit his website at www.joshsandoz.com. Josh is also highly involved in an organization called the Center for Object Relations (COR) and invites any fellow therapists in the Seattle area to connect with him through this organization. Finally, as mentioned above, Josh is the creator of the International Therapist Directory, which is a wonderful resource for anyone looking for a therapist abroad as well as for any therapists working with this population to connect with one another. About This Week's Guest Tayo Rockson The CEO of UYD Media and host of the As Told By Nomads podcast. His three tips to become more culturally competent are: Be curious. Explore what is out there. Explore what you don't know or think you don't know. Travel. By travelling you expand your world like nothing else can. He also suggests to get lost on purpose. This way you will meet and interact with people you otherwise would have never met. Be open minded. Tayo thinks it is dangerous to think that your way of thinking and judging is the only and absolute way. There are other ways as well. For sure.
