They are beamed onto the station - he and Mel - as the only survivors of it." Beamed vs. Transmitted: "They actually say 'beamed' in this case. They don't use the term transporter though. But I think that term was already being used in science fiction before. It's like blasters. I was naive enough to think that blasters came from Star Wars, but in Foundation by Isaac Asimov, the guns are called blasters." THE ELEMENTS: Space 1999: "The Space 1999 bit is the medical doctor who sounds an awful lot like Barbara Bain. She's going out of her way. She's the one doing medical logs like Bain did in Season 2 of Space 1999. Barbara Bain had a very distinctive voice. This woman seems to be placing that same emphasis on it there." Star Trek: "There's a lot of references to Star Trek. You look and you go 'Oh, now they're referencing this episode. Now they're referencing that episode.'" Eurovision: "They got someone who did a dead-on impression of the guy. For years Eurovision was hosted by a BBC presenter Wogan from Northern Ireland. So they have their version being Logan and he sounds just like him. It was cute." THE INTERGALACTIC SONG CONTEST: "On the station, while he's trying to figure out who tried to kill or not try to but successfully killed the new commander, the Doctor's also got to deal with an intergalactic song contest." JOHN'S VERDICT: Worth It? "It's worth a listen, especially if you are a Star Trek fan. And in my case, I had to laugh at the Eurovision spoofing they did." But they may be spinning a lot slower than we thought. When black holes gobble up matter around them, they start spinning faster and we've largely used this understanding to guess their speed. But new research also weighs the slowing effect of massive gas jets that black holes emit – revealing that many may have slowed dramatically since their births. How these new estimates of spin also offer insights into a black hole's history. What if we could generate solar power in space, far more efficiently than on Earth – and then beam it down to our houses? An MIT experiment has managed to do one of the most crucial steps of that science fiction-seeming process, converting electricity from a satellite into microwaves that were then successfully received by a collector in California. How these microwaves could supply the power grid on Earth and help ween us off of fossil fuels – if they can overcome some major hurdles. Apes like to playfully tease each other, just like humans do. While their methods may be a bit different from ours – poking, hitting, pulling on hair and stealing – it looks like they're often doing it for fun, rather than to harass or assert dominance. Halloween is fast approaching and as usual, your At The Flicks team have a few treats for you. Coming your way is a trilogy of terror, no, not Jeff, Graham and Neil, instead three epically scary shows. The fun starts with this spooktacular Halloween party from another member of the team. It's a big treat as Declan is allowing us into his Halloween home. Beamed direct from Declan's haunted mansion is the scary time we all want at Halloween (not counting Graham and Neil of course). This is a special building, designed for seasonal excitement. There are three sections in this massive gothic structure. The first is the movie hall where Dec will unveil five thrills of the season for you. No clues as to what they are, except to say most of them sent Graham's fear factor up to 11 – even though one of them was in black and white. Mind you there was an equal scare for Jeff when it was revealed one of them had subtitles. Luckily, he remembered there was a passable American remake! Then it's a small walk to the next part of the crumbling abode to the TV section. Of course, Dec is the expert on all things streaming and the choices here are excellent – although once again Graham is refusing to come out from under the covers to watch any of them. That sheet was so tightly wrapped around him we thought it was a ghost impression! Despite that, Jeff even offered to hold his hand through some of the scary bits, but sadly that was also met with refusal. Finally, we came to a section that Graham was happy to visit. Dec gave us five music tracks that will be on repeat for the evening. From the classic to the modern and thankfully no rap to scare Jeff! Now if you are really lucky you will be getting your black card invite through the post for this amazing event very shortly. Forget Universal's Horror Nights, this is the place to be seen this year – although the evil spirits that abide there do claim likeminded souls to join them. Funnily enough, no one has seen Neil or Listener Frank since their recent visits. Once Halloween is over, Declan will be preparing for his next big event.
